      I would say it was ethical to find the one coon but definitely not shooting one hoping he would fall out because of a lack of patience. That is not a good example of how to be a wildlife advocate. I told my boys to never do something like that because it is unethical.

    The 17 hmr is not comparative to a 22lr because the 17hmr is a necked down 22 magnum cartridge. So the comparison is between those two, the 17 mach 2 is a necked down 22lr, that would be a comparison

  • @Liamisdead99
    @Liamisdead99 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    The reason the 17 hmr drifts less is because that 17 caliber bullet has a higher ballistics coefficient making it fly better in the wind and hold its energy at longer distances

    • @TheCodyO
      @TheCodyO ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Look that one up. Actually 17hmr hornady vmax had a bc of 0.095 whole a 40 grain 22 lr has a bc of .120 (cci standard velocity). 17 hmr does have twice the speed though so a lot less time to be influenced by the environment.

    • @frankammirati3385
      @frankammirati3385 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheCodyOthe biggest issue with the .22lr for me is accuracy out past 50 yards , when dealing with small game you need to be pretty close and that’s what makes it tough . I’ve been looking at higher end riffles in a .22lr but this video has me rethinking that .

    • @TheCodyO
      @TheCodyO ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@frankammirati3385 yah I can see how the 17hmr is more forgiving and they tend to be accurate rifles even at the more affordable end. (Based on my limited experience)

      @@frankammirati3385my dad taught me on 22lr lever rifle. I finally convinced him to put a scope on it, after that we would only shoot at sticks about the size of your finger at 100 yards because any bigger or closer was "cheating".
      22lr can be accurate.
      My 22mag will consistently hit a soda can at 150 yards.

    I've been thinking about getting a 17hmr for a while now. From all my research, I'm pretty certain it will be much better for hunting over the 22lr or 22wmr. I am torn between 17hmr and 17wsm. Thing that draws me towards the 17hmr is ammo availability.

    • @kevinc.3579
      @kevinc.3579 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      17 wsm sucks bro. It’s bad accuracy is well known. I own 4 or 5 hmr’s, a wsm and a 17 hornet. Wsm accuracy is trash and 17 hornet costs as much as my 22-250.
      The only bad thing about an hmr is it isn’t really good for catch and cook. This video does not do justice to the damage this round does to a squirrel or rabbit under 100 yards. Imagine using a .338 lapua with ballistic tipped hollow points on a coyote. 😂

    I don't think anything will replace 22lr. 17hmr is better but 22 is so cheap and accurate in a good rifle. Me and my buddy should golf balls at 200 300yrd with cz 455 and 457. Shooting the 22lr long distance teaches you a lot about wind and hold over that can be used with larger calibers. 22lr can also be shot long distances sub sonic with a suppressor. Making you position virtually undetectable in a survival situation.

    If you practice with the air rifle and learn how to use the scope properly. (dial for yardage) Your ability to shoot will make the .22LR the caliber of choice. (lower cost, more skill required, better for maintaining your skills) Nice to see you eat what you kill. Thanks for the video.

    I mean this in the nicest way possible, can you try to stop wounding so many animals? Of all the hunting channels I've seen you seem to wound the animals you hunt the most. Maybe just sight your gun in better, take more time to make confident shots, and wait for better shot placement oppertunities. I like hunting but it just sucks to see an animal get wounded to to lack of effort on the hunters part. I like the channel just some feedback.

    I love my 22lr Savage rifle, whether it's plinking or hunting small game. But sometimes the 22lr is not powerful and accurate enough when it comes to ranges above 100 yards. This one time I shot a coyote at 80 yards in the ribs. It ran for almost 150 yards in the open field before it started thrashing and then dropped and it made me feel bad cause it didn't go down quickly enough. I have also shot them with 308 and 45-70 but that's overkill. So I'm thinking of getting a more powerful rimfire. Either a 17hmr or 17 wsm, with the 17 wsm being 50% more powerful and flat shooting than a 17 hmr.

    17 hmr is a nice round very effective round for hunting small and medium game. Handy rifle to have when your out checking your traps. I trap beaver and otter and we sometimes run into a group of otters. They're hardy animals we used to carry 223 but ammo is expensive after a while and depending in what kind of rifle you carry could be heavy.

      You mean just small game. They’re shit for anything bigger than a rabbit or squirrel. If you’re going coyote or stick to .223.

      @@VendettaNC I wouldn't use it for dogs. I've used 17hmr on seals and does the job just fine just have to be careful of shot placement.

    That's one MAJOR advantage of a lever action. If there's a misfire you simply pull the hammer back and it ALWAYS fires then!👍👍😉😉

    Thanks for this really good video.
    Did the firing pin leave a deep impression on the rim of those two consecutive misfires?
    In other words do you think it was the rifle or the ammo causing the problem?

    I finally got my first kill with 17hmr last Monday Squirrel and got lucky I could barely see him but I nailed him. Love my Savage 93r17 I got other guns but right now 17hmr takes my small game hunting gun.

    There are several videos about how to skin a squirrel without getting hair on the meat. Check them out. I'll never skin another squirrel like I used to again.
