Why I got rid of my Front Runner Roof Rack: Big Country 4x4 FJ Cruiser Roof Rack.

- Are you looking for the strongest roof rack for your expedition needs? I was, so that is why I switched from a Front Runner Slime line II Roof rock on my FJ Cruiser to a Big Country 4X4 roof rack sold by Rugged Bound Supply Co. in Houston, Texas.
I bought my Front Runner Roof rack back in 2019 and used it heavily for two years. I mounted everything from a rooftop tent, ground tents, condition1 storage cases, Zarges storage cases, water port, and even metal rolling carts sold at Costco. I would stand on top and notice the flex in the bars and feel confident but worried when I was driving.
Finally, my need for a stronger roof rack was met! my new Big Country 4x4 roof rack came fully assembled and not with just bolts but welded! That was defiantly a key factor in why it was much stronger than my Front Runner roof rack.
Now maybe your needs for a strong rack aren't the same as mine, maybe you just need to crawl to the mall or put a pair of Max Trax up there. If that's the case maybe this rack is not for you, but if you need a strong, low-wind noise, custom-built roof rack, then this is for you!

I like the concept, but would hate the top becoming impossible to clean! Eventually with summer pollen, and road dust unable to be cleaned off it would become a very funkey top on and otherwise beautiful vehicle!
The top is fairly easy to clean by hand and if you have a brush with stick even easier.
The roof is sealed with the block system - so the entire racks comes off after removing 6 bolts each side, and the roof remains sealed. So for a deep clean or adding a polish/wrap etc pulling the rack off is fairly easy and intended by design.
That's a lot of steel for a roof rack. You actually only need just enough cross members to transfer the weight to the FJ's structure

Thank you, and yes I am. I don't have to worry about alot of bolts coming loose like I did with my Front Runner rack. I do like the look of the prinsu style racks but when I see how small the slats are I know I made the right choice.

I unfortunately do not. I had it installed by a shop because my factory roof rack bolts were so hard to remove. I didn’t want to strip them and didn’t have good tools.
Where do you get accessories for this rack?
I have gotten them from Rugged Bound. I am working on a video to show the two accessories I have.

Can you please tell me if the top of the back door is hitting the awning as I'm looking at getting this awning but I have some concerns and that is on of them.
The other is the M6 bolts the awning is held on by.
To have 28kg hanging only on M6 bolts in a channel worries me.
I seen some pictures of the bolts pulling through the channel..
The top of the back door does not hit the awining. The bolts that hold the awning are very sturdy and I don't have any conerns with them.
How was the wind noise with this rack?
I do not notice any wind noise with the rack, the lats are going vertical with the wind, so that helps reduce wind noise. Overall it’s a very quiet rack and strong 💪🏽
What is the max weight capacity “on road” compared to the dynamic rating for off road capacities?
Thank you for checking out the video! The dynamic load is 550lbs and the static load is 1100lbs which is more than the roof of the FJ can handle. Check your manual for manufactures load rating on the roof of the FJ.
I know you have a code, and I gladly willing to use it. But is it better to get the rack from Big Countries website or Rugged Bound supply. Price wise are different but to what extent and also shipping time? Thank You
If you live in the 🇺🇸 you most likely have to order from Rugged Bound. BC4X4 from my knowledge does not ship here, Rugged Bound is their North American distributor. So shipping time would be faster and maybe your only option.

How is the noise with this rack? Considering its a grid with crossmembers below the North/south crossmembers, I would guess it's louder than the Frontrunner.
It is very quite and I haven't noticed a sound change from my previous front runner rack. I think the direction of the roof rack lats help with the aerodynamics compared to the majority of racks that have horizontal lats.
what about the metal crates I've seen in your videos that you have on your roof rack? And the holding brackets for the metal crates? Thank you!

What sliders are you running? Nice rig.
All pro rock sliders. I like being able to use them when reaching up for my big country 4x4 roof rack
Did you use RTC sealant on the bolts where you put the roof rack on
Mine had a lot of sealant from the previous install still in the bolt holes and since My has a factory roof rack it had a rubber gasket where I mounted the new mounting brackets. But it is recommended when installing this roof rack to add a dab of RTV to the bolts to ensure 100% chance of no water coming in to your cabin.

@@GREATESTOFALLTEXAS I have a front runner rack. I love many of the things about it, but now I'm looking at getting the new ARB base rack, mostly due to weight. Just wanted to see how difficult of a transition it'll be to switch by selling my existing rack!
To be honest, I loved the look of the front runner rack on your FJ! It was one of the reasons why I also bought one for my FJ! Lol 😂
@@stay_in_adventure I’m not sure how easy it is to install the ARB rack is but to install and switch my Front Runner roof rack to my current Big Country 4X4 it wasn’t hard at all! Especially because the Big Country 4x4 roof rack comes welded and no assembly required for the platform like all modular roof racks.
I just bought 2012 FJ for my wife and it came with Prinsu Rack
