A big reason I sold my Jimny, is because I couldnt confidently tell people to do the same setup because I knew how dangerous it was... My Roofrack was more than capable of handling it, but the actual weight of the accessories on it was just too damn much! Now I get people asking for advice about Jimny's still and I have to explain to them not to follow in my tracks. We have a huge responsibility as content creators, I have learnt that through these lessons! xD
@Shaun McCarthy Oh for sure; and having more mounting points to also distribute the load helps. Something I must say about my rack on the Hilux at the moment; is that Eezi awn actually install an aluminium gutter, which is glued and riveted onto the roof which 8 rivets; then the roof racks feet are mounted to that gutter. To me this allows the rack to use the entire gutter to distribute load; instead of just the rivets. It may not look as nice or slick as other racks, mounting solutions, but its solid.
I've got no respect for Rhino, spending upwards of $1500 to get a rack with an off road capacity of less than 30 kg is a disgrace and rhino should be ashamed.
To be fair, it's not completely Rhino's fault. Passenger vehicles aren't designed to carry loads on the roof. The roof rails can only hold so much before, as Tyler experienced, the fasteners rip right out. What's the point of putting a 500kg rated roof rack on, when the roof fixing point can only hold 50kg off road? The only way around it is to install internal roll bars and attach to them through the roof metal. I do agree Rhino's public relations exercise was disappointing.
Dude I have a Volkswagen and the off-road capacity with the bars and rack is still 140 pounds lol this has more to do with the truck manufacturer. Read your trucks owners manual before buying aftermarket accessories
@@NB-ir1me Same, have a 4door VW Golf that has the big bolts under the door rubber molding going right into the chassis that the roof rack supports attach to. Then I watch these videos where people say like roof tents are not safe because the roof sheet metal can only hold so much - I think if you buy a SUV/truck etc where the roof rack is not attached to the chassis then that is your own problem...

Kudos, mate! You are an honest bloke. Don't be too hard on yourself. I ordered a Frontrunner Slimline II (toughest rack) when I ordered my Troopy in Germany. When I picked it up I realised that they have installed a Rhino Rack Pioneer. I somehow accepted it because they told me that there are no differences. On top I had a very long drive to pick up the car and I didn't want to return without it. I have an iKamper Skycamp on top and therefore already beyond the rack's limits. Couldn't find proper info on offroad load capacity when picked up the Land Cruiser. What is the sense in having rack on an offroader when overlanding is impossible. That's BS. By the way, I bought a Rhino Rack Batwing and it broke on the first trip. Poor quality. Ronny, thanks for your honesty and valuable info. Rhino Rack, step up your game!
Hey Ronny, only just getting into 4WDing and your channel has been my go to source for information. Props for owning up to the mistake, only further increases your credibility!! Thanks for the quality content

When they tell you 100kg in big letters and 55kg "offroad" halfway down the page then that is misleading marketing it's as simply as that. Especially when you are dropping $1600 on supposedly the best. Rhino racks are failing as easily as Chinese knockoffs and I'm glad they are being called out.
> halfway down the page halfway down the page THAT YOU READ AFTER YOU PAID FOR IT. It's in freaking fitting instructions, who read them when making a purchasing decision? They know they've got no market with bloody 40 kilos (or even less) of load for 2k worth accessory.

Just from the changing camera angles to lighting and some really nice shots offroad and of course editing. Really good to see you and Tyler met each other, unfortunate of the conditions but you both are big inspirations to how I create myself. Keep it up mate. Cheers Ryan
Ronny - how I read the RhinoRack instructions, the 1.5 safety factor is applied to the rack's load limit, not the car's roof max carrying capacity. You mentioned yourself that the car's roof limit is 75 kg on and off road. In your example the off road rating would be 32 kg (48/1.5) instead of 23 kg (75/1.5 - 27). It makes it slightly better.
First of all, TH-cam ratings up or down, doesn't matter. As long that you are honest and truthful, you win on a long run. More donations/sponsorship from manufacturers, and more honest viewers. Ones that matter. & you are a better person, because you admit your mistake publicly and are being totally honest with it. Ronny you & Andrew are only ones that I wach reviews.

You would expect a rack to be manufactured to meet the maximum capacity of the vehicle it’s built for, on or off road. Thanks for being accountable and honest, appreciate your videos
Even if it did he would still be overloaded by toyotas max rating, the roof itself isnt strong enough for all the shit most people put up there these days
they are rated higher, its the vehicle capacity thats the issue, you need to understand static weight, dynamic rate and off road weight, they are all different
I've always used the rhino HD bars. I have awning, max trax and light bar and little platform for loading up firewood, chainsaw, swag if need be. @@TheDavidCollett RR off road weight limits are so ridiculous the rack fails on it's basic premise and intended use case for 80% of buyers. It's a moot point. Class action who? The manufacture has that info out there and they are not trying to hide it. So what go after 3rd party resellers who fudge some numbers by using ones that aren't specific to the Hilux while at the same time not actually saying its specific to the Hilux? Good luck. Also remember laws very country to country so depending where you buy from so consumer protection laws in that country may not have your back at all.
@@loganholmberg2295 the way I understood it was the rack it's self have a rating of 100 kg on road and minus 33 % off road bringing that to 66 kg . Then with the load limit of 75kg both on and off road for the car minus the weight of the rack. there is no difference . If they have based the off road load capacity based on the two thirds of the rate loading of the car as Ronnie is including in his calculations then that information is not out there and the previously published information was misleading
@@loganholmberg2295 Really? I have been looking for this info and it is very difficult to find. Even after knowing about this, and being advised by my supplier that the off road limit is a reduction of 15%, I can't find the info. that Ronny has presented on here. The only place that I can find mention of it is that they say it is in the fitment instructions. Bit late by then isn't it? Endless pictures of these racks loaded up with off road gear and plenty of chat about being an Australian Quality brand but I can't find this reduction number anywhere else.
I remember going through this intense and nkt easy research process 2 years ago when I wanted to put a Kings rooftop tent on my 2019 Outlander Exceed. It was hell to find the dynamic roof capacity as it didn't exist in Mitsubishi's manual and even tracking down their head technical officer in Australia he didn't know. He just said it's the same as the static. I ended up going with Thule ropf racks (not platform) which are not rivitted into the roof (they just clamp on the already existing rails). I put my tent which weighed 70 kg on top and went for a 2 week road trip. The most off roading I did was beach driving and it gave me no greif whatsoever. It worked wonderfully and never came off or even budged. Make of that what you will but that was my experience.
It takes a humble man to admit a mistake, well done Ronny. Tyler thanks for making us more aware of the dangers we didn't realise we faced. Cheers fellas.
Thanks for taking the time to acknowledge the learning gap and point out some roof rack loading safety. We all appreciate the words and I FOR ONE will be going to FR's website and looking at my numbers on the LC200 too.

In your case it just has such a great impact because your reach is so big. The way you dealt with the situation goes great lengths showing your character, honesty and ethics. 💪🏻💪🏻
Ronny - I bet very few people also know this. If the Hilux’s “roof load limit” is 75kg this also includes anything you put on the “canopies roof” because its not just about weight on the roof specifically, its about “overall weight above the height of the vehicle” which alters its centre of gravity.
Very informative Ronny, thanks Tyler for sharing your story!! Welcome back Michael from SEEK ADVENTURE! Another WA local TH-camr inspiring us to get out there!
Completely understand why he stopped but it killed me as I’d only just bought by first ever 4wd and discovered him literally a month before he said he was giving it away. Loved his presentation style and genuine approach. Fingers crossed hey.
Hi from the US, I greatly appreciate your honesty and your high standards, keep them up many people (worldwide) don’t have a clue about products in an off-road setting. Love your channel, keep it going.
According to the Rhino Rack fitting sheet, the calculation should be: Onroad Limit = Vehicle Limit - Rack System Mass and Offroad Limit = Onroad Limit/1.5 Using the figures you gave for your vehicle and rack system, this gives: Onroad Limit = 75 - 27 = 48 kg (the same as you calculated) but the Offraod Limit is then: 48/1.5 = 32 kg not the 23 kg your calculations give.
Before you go drilling holes in your roof I would check that it's legal. In NZ there has just been a clarification about snorkels to a pillars and making sure nothing more than the outer skin is drilled through, otherwise it can weaken the vehicle structure and need specialist inspection. I would assume the spot where all the panels on the roof overlap is structural....
This is something that everyone should do. Research, research and research. The static and dynamic weight ratings are real things and should be taken in account when setting up your rig. Plus I have noticed a trend of vehicle manufacturers from old to new lowering roof capacities.
It’s a tough gig getting the right setup. I’ve got the same rack as the one in question here, pride myself on my research, but had no idea about this issue. Well done mate, appreciate your honesty and falling on the sword👍✊

We all stuff up, at home, at work or as content creators. Admitting it and apologizing for it is the hard part. ✊ You really set the standard for the rest of us creators when it comes to credibility, so you got nothing to worry about. 👍😊 Glad the roof rack is getting sorted. Stay safe. Simon 🇳🇴
I’m a dreaded Wrangler guy and from the US, but I always watch your videos on gear and advice. Great job and we’re still with you!!! Cheers
Tyler Thompson covered this really well
it's a huge problem if 2 guys who do this for a living made the same mistake.
@@chrisjie2127 Two _young_ guys -- this is well known to us older bushies and off-road enthusiasts.
But then, it used to be mentioned in your owner's-manual (I can't say if they still do that, but they did up until at least the early '90s).
Did the manufacturer of the vehicle specify the on- and off-road load capacity? Or the rack manufacturers?
@@Loribyn I don't feel like age has anything to do with it. The math isn't hard; the problem is that we're learning we can't trust the numbers thrown at us at face value.
Expertly done, I apologise for being curt but I feel now, you have done more than your part in generating awareness in something that I think we all feel a little stupid for overlooking. Myself included. Much respect
Roof top tent makers are nervously while watching this video😂
they are sweating bullets 😂
Yeah for sure. Exactly my thoughts.
I really appreciate the honesty here. And the fact that you gave the company a chance to respond to you and speak with you. That’s the way everyone should be.
We have a huge responsibility as content creators, I have learnt that through these lessons! xD
You have a strong canopy now. 👍👍
@@Malc664 For sure; I am MUCH more confident in my new setup, the vehicle feels so much safer.
@Shaun McCarthy I think if I proved anything in that time; its that the roof load capacity is high; but the vehicle stability was horrible.
Don't take it too seriously man, its not your fault if people choose to overload their roofs
I purchased a rhino basket, read the fitting instructions and the load rating were stated very clearly. Helps to read the instructions.
I've got no respect for Rhino, spending upwards of $1500 to get a rack with an off road capacity of less than 30 kg is a disgrace and rhino should be ashamed.
you may as well drive with your left hand and your right hand holding on to the gas bottle on top.
on second thoughts....
@@NB-ir1me Indeed, and just being appatanty ly unaware of the difference in static vs dynamic loads.
Good on You Ronny for bringing up this issue and admitting you over looked it, just like most of us have done. In saying that roof rack manufactures should take more responibilty in informing the true load ratings, CLEARLY !
Good man, Ronny. People need to know this. Tyler's video was an eye-opener for me.
Thank you fir your honesty. We all make mistakes. This video helped me to realize my vehicle’s true maximum rooftop capacity, by telling me the Key Words to look for. Thank you.
This speaks volumes of who you are as a person. Really appreciate the amount of thought and feelings you put into owning your mistake. I wouldn't have thought twice about loading what you had on the Hilux.
good on ya Ronny, good to see one of the "big creators" standing up and being able to admit they were wrong and not just bully everyone out of their way, so much respect for you!
Ronny this is an excellent and genuine way to respond to the last video and the issues arising from it. Thank you, this is why you get the support you do and why you are by far the best Aussie 4wd content creator. Your integrity has stood out in the past and this is another shining example of why we trust you.
Hey! Ronny Don’t get discouraged! You are great! You did what you should do! A responsible man~ I support you from Taiwan
After watching i have checked my prado 2018 which has a pioneer rack and backbone and there is no doubt I have overloaded that thing. Thanks for the video. Keep it up
Ronny, don't beat yourself up mate. Nobody is perfect. You have done the right thing, realised you made a mistake and fixed it. If anything I have even more trust in the advice you give out. Love your videos, keep them coming.
Ronny. Your best video yet. It is fundamental that we all learn from this, your honest reflection and learning are spot on. By sharing this you have earned greater respect from me and I believe many others. You stand up for your own mistake, when in all honesty many others would gloss over the issue. Thank you and well done!
Thanks for the heads-up on the roof rack issue. Also respect your honesty and great effort to quickly rectify your error. Good to see people taking responsibility for their content like this.
Ronny you have a huge following amongst offroaders all the way in Pakistan as well, I've learned so much from your videos, thanks as always for the stellar content!
Thank you for being vulnerable. My husband kept saying we were overloaded on Fraser in January. I’ll now be looking at our load and also being careful what goes in.
The true measure of a man is the acceptance of making a mistake, the means by which he goes about rectifying and fixing the issues caused by that mistake. It's a credit to you mate being able to admit you were wrong, most of us have too much pride to do such.
All the way from the USA - thank you for taking the time to explain this so clearly. We need to take all of this into consideration for our Jeep. Thanks!
When they tell you 100kg in big letters and 55kg "offroad" halfway down the page then that is misleading marketing it's as simply as that. Especially when you are dropping $1600 on supposedly the best. Rhino racks are failing as easily as Chinese knockoffs and I'm glad they are being called out.
> halfway down the page
halfway down the page THAT YOU READ AFTER YOU PAID FOR IT. It's in freaking fitting instructions, who read them when making a purchasing decision? They know they've got no market with bloody 40 kilos (or even less) of load for 2k worth accessory.
ARB shares just went down
@@tonymiller5841 It seems that having cross bars instead of a platform will gain more load rating.
Yeah I’ve had dealings with the state manager of rhino rack wa and I can say the man is nothing short of brilliant. He came out to fix a problem generated by a repair shop and he went above and beyond what he should have done. This isn’t a paid review but an honest feedback of this mans dedication to what he does. When I buy my next car he’s got my business
Despite the controversy surrounding your last video, I think that as a fellow creator and long time follower, that the quality of your content Ronny has improved 10 fold. Just from the changing camera angles to lighting and some really nice shots offroad and of course editing. Really good to see you and Tyler met each other, unfortunate of the conditions but you both are big inspirations to how I create myself. Keep it up mate. Cheers Ryan
Thanks for your honesty! And you're spot on, its not just roof racks! Great stuff
Saved me a comment.
Agree...but still not much
Agree
First of all, TH-cam ratings up or down, doesn't matter. As long that you are honest and truthful, you win on a long run. More donations/sponsorship from manufacturers, and more honest viewers. Ones that matter.
& you are a better person, because you admit your mistake publicly and are being totally honest with it.
Ronny you & Andrew are only ones that I wach reviews.
I thought somebody died that's how serious Ronny was.
lmao
I know you are just playing but honestly it is a fatality waiting to happen if people don't know about it actually being an issue. So if you think about it, it's better that he is very serious for a very serious matter with such horrific potential outcomes. If it saves 1 life it's worth the seriousness. But again I know you are just joking and probably aware of what I just wrote so I don't even know why I'm sending this 🤣
taking responsibility for one's mistakes and owning them adds further credibility to your and your channel. We all make mistakes its what you do after that which defines you. Thank you for your honesty.
Your credibility was never in doubt mate! You made a mistake, owned up to it and educated your own and other viewers 🤙🏽 you’re a legend!!
we still here. one of best lessons on rig building . fundamentals. the best designers screw up the most, learn from it, and publish the outcomes. thank you Ronny for making this channel.
Not as fancy looking as the pioneer platform and doesn't have the various rhino brackets but heaps of different C channel brackets that fit used in construction.
Big thanks to Tyler Thompson. I read your reply to him Ronny. I didnt think it was very gracious initially.. Glad you have remedied it now. Having had my rhino rack shear off im very familiar with the rivets shearing. Rhinos mounting system MUST BE CHANGED TO ENSURE SAFETY FOR ALL!!!! NO MORE
RIVETS. Go the frontrunner and stainless bolts
Are you suggesting that your RR sheered off whilst adhering to RR's off-road weight limits??
@@TheDavidCollett RR off road weight limits are so ridiculous the rack fails on it's basic premise and intended use case for 80% of buyers. It's a moot point. Every trade show pic and 3rd party vendor has these racks displayed grossly overweight. RR burying the specs in the instructions isn't an accident it's a strategy.
Absolute respect mate where you’ve made a mistake you owned it. You can tell you’ve taken it hard by your expression
Thanks for bringing this to everyone’s attention! Don’t know why so many brands of all 4x4 products do not display their weights or weight loadings, extremely frustrating as it’s such important information!
It's your standards and morals to consumers why your my one and only 4wd channel i watch.. thanks for all the support over the years
Big up to you Ronny, Tyler alone was making a great stand for more information after all his problems, but having yourself come on as well after the last video and with your backing it will go a long way! We are humans mate and you are still a legend! P.S love the Lux!
I put exactly the same roof rack on my Ranger. I used the Stainless Steel rivets supplied. A friend happened to come around and he just removed his son in laws roof liner in his Ranger and installed bolts to hold the roof rack on because the rivets were loose and threatening to part company with the vehicle.Ronnie every one makes mistakes that's life keep up the good work you are doing.
Class action time maybe?
I was told 100kg by installer, 23kg isn’t worth anything
I was also told 100kg by an installation shop.
@@loganholmberg2295 I’ve got info from them saying that it is capable of 100kg
Check the law bud
Well said, honesty and humble best policy anda great thank you to Tyler Thompson for his findings and channel natural to the heart.
Ronnie, you’re still at the top my list for 4WD content! Own a Wrangler so the rack sits on the tub, but everything you share is appreciated!

Well done for taking the lesson and not letting your pride get in the way. Tons of respect.
Mad respect for admitting your mistake and correctingand the very can't that your making this video shows your ethical and your credibility is in tact
Good video Ronny, 👍🏻 Don’t be too hard on yourself, personally. You made a unfortunate purchase decision, like we all do sometimes.
Good on you Ronny, old fashioned integrity is alive and well.
Good lesson and video. Hopefully, people will learn that the basic road 4wd Ute or SUV is NOT a heavy-duty truck.
Very informative Ronny, thanks Tyler for sharing your story!! Welcome back Michael from SEEK ADVENTURE! Another WA local TH-camr inspiring us to get out there!

@@scubareuben 1 video so far, sounds like he is keeping it casual. If he does post in the future????

Hi from the US, I greatly appreciate your honesty and your high standards, keep them up many people (worldwide) don’t have a clue about products in an off-road setting. Love your channel, keep it going.
According to the Rhino Rack fitting sheet, the calculation should be:
Onroad Limit = Vehicle Limit - Rack System Mass
and
Offroad Limit = Onroad Limit/1.5
Using the figures you gave for your vehicle and rack system, this gives:
Onroad Limit = 75 - 27 = 48 kg (the same as you calculated)
but the Offraod Limit is then:
48/1.5 = 32 kg
not the 23 kg your calculations give.
Desmond Boorman Either way,it's too low a weight for traveling off road.
32kgs is bananas for a $2000 product
The Rhino website/manual says offroad cargo rating = (vehicle load rating/1.5)-rack. So (75/1.5)-27 = 23
Wow I didn’t realise it was that bad. Thanks to both you guys for raising awareness. Ill keep it im mind when buying mine
There's laws about what you do to your car roof lol? Glad I live in a free country.
Thanks Ronny. Your honesty is refreshing but what is more important is information you shared with us.
I saw a link to you on John Cadogan's report about rhino racks. Thx for your important video
Thx for this message Ronny.
It doesn't really take much to overload a roof rack at all.
I have recently completed my build, but now I immediately noticed I overloaded my roof too. Thanks again Ronny (and Tyler).
New build soon for me lol.
