hey kiwi dude, 2 points for ypur knowledge: 1. the German soldiers have litten stand for cooking the Main meals, fueled with little white Tablettes we called esbit. 2. the Red Jam ist Sauerkirsche original for you a kund of sour cherry. in case you only know the sweet ones:) . greetings from one Who has eaten this for 4 years but likes it still today
From an ex-German Army soldier: Type 2 is the best kind. There are also a few tricks to combine some ingredients to form new meals/drinks. One does get inventive after a while. There used to be spreadable cheese in them (maybe type 1 or 3, can't remember). Combine that with the Cevapcici: pretty nice. Anyways: Thanks for the videos dude and also your daughter is really adorable! Greetz from Germany. :) P.S.: Do not eat too much of that chocolate. Constipation alert! ;)
I like how your daughter can eat, and like all these different foods. younger kids nowadays are just picky towards what they eat. Keep up the good work mate!
I don't know why German cuisine gets a bad rap, they know how to eat well. I can imagine hearty warm meals with chunks of meat like this would be very appealing out in the field.
For a lot of people our food is hard for the stomach. Traditional German food is made to work on a field all day long, without getting hungry so far, it's stuffing. People who say it has a boring taste to it either have only eaten it made from a non German cook, or have pretty dead tastebuds, never had someone complain about my mother's or grandma's food. There is a lot of foreign food I like, but at the end of the day I'd visit my mother for somethng homemade.
Vegan. Not vegetarian. Vegetarians are allowed to eat animal products that no animal had to be killed or mutilated for. So milk, eggs, honey, etc. are okay for vegetarians. What you mean is vegan. Know the name of your true enemy.
***** You do know people can survive without meat, right? Even vegans don't exactly _die_ from the lack of animal products if they seek out the right plants, though it is of course much easier to use animal products. Besides, I'm a freaking meat eater, myself. I eat meat every single day. I make it a _point_ to eat meat every single day.
Actually you can get all you need from plant-based food. Doing the research is not that hard. In Sweden we had many hard years where animalistic food was necessary to survive the winters which then turned into our foodculture. Now on the other hand the industrialized society has tamed the active hard working farmer into a far less active life where we need less meat and animal products. Sure, eat some meat - but stuffing yourself like greasy American fastfood-junkies obviously isn't healthy. Also the industrialized animal-industry is sick and creates shitty food as well. Be your own farmer if you want healthy food.
I really enjoy how you unpack, and show us everything one piece at a time. And about the whiteness on chocolate: "Sugar bloom is caused by moisture. Condensation on to the surface of the chocolate or moisture in the chocolate coating causes the sugar to absorb the moisture and dissolve. When the moisture evaporates, the sugar forms larger crystals, leaving a dusty layer." Got it from google :)
i love your videos so much! im not sure how i got sucked into loving mres/different countries versions of them, but i do, and you present them so well! these einmannpackung videos are my favorite, as im currently learning german and its fun to try and guess what the items are just by reading the labels :-)
So glad to see one of my favorite MRE reviewers back in action! Great review as always. I've been waiting and waiting for a new video. Seems like Germany always has great packs. I'd love the chance to try one, one day! Keep your videos coming, I'll keep watching!
bellaxfatal Cheers! Glad you're enjoying them. Now that The Boss is back from China we should be able to crack into a few more soon :-) I highly recommend the EPA's, you can usually get them on eBay by searching for 'Einmannpackung'.
Kiwi, always a blast watching our vids, makes me want to go out and try a few of the other types of ration variants. My daughters like watching the Boss try everything out as well. Ever run into anything she isn't fond of though? Take it easy and keep up the great work. Cheers from Texas
Christopher Wellington Greetings from New Zealand. Great to hear you and your Daughters are enjoying the videos. The Boss and I certainly enjoy making them. There's only a handful of things the Boss hasn't liked. Off the top of my head cherry cobbler & instant fish soup didn't go down too well.
lol had the video playing in the background at 6:29. Thought you were talking about some flowers called sour kush for a second, thought what how'd that get through customs. Funny how peoples brains become wired certain ways over their lives. Great video as always keep them up.
Very good review! I laughed when you said "Probably a good thing" to her at the end lol Keep them coming. I got myself a French Ration pack that I'm going to enjoy in 2 weeks. Never had a German one before - I kind of want one now.
I can honestly say that I missed seeing your posts and I watched all the videos again. I was very excited when I saw that you posted. This 24hr ration looked like it was one of the better ones you've had. The chocolate was the correct color!!! woo and the snozberries taste like snozberries haha. That ration heater reminds me of the one from the Japanese ration, the one that scared us all. Good to see you posting again. Have a good one down there. Cheers!!
I have to say that I like Crystal's eagerness to try new foods. I wasn't as fortunate when I was raising mine. Oftentimes, they'd simply turn away when we brought new dishes to the table. "I don't like it" was the common frain, spoken by them without so much as a taste. Kudos to your "boss" for being open to new foods.
Really enjoying going back and watching these old videos! The Boss is either a really good at acting in front of the camera or the least finicky kid I have ever seen! She ate that liverwurst and then said she *liked* it! I've never seen a child do that with liverwurst! You may have a future competitive eater there Kiwi Dude :)
Thanks Kiwi Dude and Crystal for another great review. Crystal looked cute in her Panda Jammies. It was nice to see you found Percy the Tank Engine. I thought he had gotten stuck in the dishwasher. This German ration looks different than the last one. I don't recall the silver packaging in the last one. And the shokolade did not look like something you brought home from a paleontology seminar. Neat to see such a fresh ration pak. When I was stationed in ( West ) Germany in early 80s we did our EOD ( emergency ordinance disposal ) training at a large German training area called Muenster Lagen Sud. After practicing to blow things up ( lots of fun ) we were invited by our German hosts to dinner. Dinner was made in their Bundeswehr ( Boon-des-veer ) field kitchens. As I recall they served the best Kartoffel suppe i have ever had. ( Potato soup ) along with some very nice wurst and black brot ( bread ). We had a great time with our German comrades , or Rads as we called them. It was nice to see you and Crystal again and i hope you are all enjoying your winter down there.
Bill23799 Hey Bill, thanks for sharing. It must have been quite an adventure over there. I think Gundog was stationed in Germany for spell too if I'm not mistaken. As for Winter, I'm looking out the window at clear blue skies, but it sure is a bit nippy! Cheers.
Great one Dude, Been trying to get my hands on this one for a while. I wont give up though, I found one not long ago but it was a bit expensive.. I get excited when I see you put up a new one . As always great review guys.. Love the panda suite adorable.
That ration looks sooo good! I'd share that with my man on a camping trip. The gulasch looks delicious! I must find a recipe and make some haha. Like you the only thing that would have not be my favorite is the liver paté. Oh and your panda is very cute! I love how she is polite and likes every food. Totaly adorable.
Been off work, sick, and sleeping this week. .Just getting back online, apologies friend!! Great review, would not expect any less ! Have missed several reviews this week, Attempting to catch up!
I loved my time in Germany even if it seemed we spent half of the year down in Grafenwehr on FTX. I've had one German MRE in my life and I was able to trade for it pretty easily. four hot homemade hamburgers to the right guy in the warehouse at Camp Aachen and an hour later, I was chowing down.
+Marineio i think its part of all: metallized foil kepps out moisture AND air (better than just plastic), it keeps heat out for longer storability and as mentioned it could be also to better clear your camp ... reflections wont be an issue because when you use your field ration, you would probably already be in a safe spot ;)
i cant help but think the reason for the shinny Mylar type packaging is so they can put an inert gas in them to improve shelf life, maybe not but it resembles inside of potato chip bags. Love the vids keep them coming, and cheers to the boss
***** It is. It's aluminized mylar. It helps keep air/light/moisture out :) . The potato chip bag version is just thinner, and sometimes not aluminized.
I was waiting for you to notice and mention the bit of leakage apparent on the outer box and then on the paper towels. Any idea what might have leaked? Aside from that, another superlative job for the Kiwi Duo.
Rocky Raab Thanks Rocky. I noticed that leakage much more during editing than I did at the time. This one was filmed a while back, but I think I wrote it off as absorbed water from having momentarily sat on the kitchen bench for a few minutes before filming. Having now watched it multiple times during editing, it seems to have been there long before I filmed the video. There was no residue on any of the containers though.
Great video! :) And here is a little tip for you about german pronunciation: w is always pronunce like v; e = é (like elephant); u = oo (wood?). So! Wurst(sausage) = voorst.
Cool to see, that the Gulasch/Lunchmeal comes from Neuenkirchen-Vörden; about 15km from where i live :D German EPA are quite good. Got some, when i served in the bundeswehr.
Celeste from Singapore here. The flameless ration heater? looked so fun to use. Never see that before in Singapore. The pate and sausage looked delish too.
Well done Crystal for giving everything a taste at least once. Many kids these days wouldn't! In fact, I'm in my 20s and I wouldn't have touched anything with the word liver in it so awesomesauce kiddo!
FT W I ate liver as a kid and loved it. Then when I was about 14 I suddenly couldn't stand the taste. I have tried over the years to like it, and just can't. Our taste buds change over the years. Although if the pate is good and it has a nice ratio of meat to liver and decent seasoning (preferably with black truffles also) and is served with mustard and cornichons I will eat it. Be brave it might surprise you.
Samidella idella I tried it and gagged every time. i just can't bring myself to eat organs. I think its the mental thought of it rather than the taste. My brains tells me oh no you don't, put that down or something haha
am i the only one that finds both the sound of the thick plastic and just military and straighforward look more appetizing than high end food that you see on cooking channels?
Hey, finally a new video, nice. One question, have you thought about merchandise? Like T-shirts with "A rock or something" on it or your kiwi logo. Wouldn't that be a good idea? I would buy it, for sure.
Hotdogweurstchen1 Long time no hear! I hope you're well. I think the 'rock or something' has been done, but I'll look further into the logo idea if people are interested? Cheers.
Ahh, the almighty Panzerkekse :D It is rumored, that they are bulletproof and if don't have a Cooker, get that cookie... it will burn for ages. That's why there are just matches in the package but no cooker ;)
In germany is all ready to eat that means there is no need for a fire or this heating bags to be faster when you eat and an anemy is in the area. Hello from NRW Germany
You CAN eat the main dishes cold. But the normal way was to heat water in the mess kit with the esbit folding heater that is part of a soldiers equipment. It tastes a LOT better.
Orestis Grivas Cevapcici :) It says it on the package. But I according to google images it's really kind of the same thing since they are similarly spiced and come from the same general geographic region :)
Love čevapčiči, its really great with littl ebit mustartard fresh cut onion, and boiled potatos too, or mashed potatos for the matter of fact. I would consider them more of mini meat loaf then sausage.
When heating multiple items at once you can turn the top item upside down for an easier fit in the bag. Also if you clean out and flatten the meal containers you've got a nice plate keep your food or small things as well as fixing up a batch of nuddles a.s.o
When I was stationed in (West ) Germany in 70s and 80s whenever i could wangle a 4 day pass i would try and do some traveling. American Express had great tours for Military personnel. For example 4 days and 3 night bus tour to Paris for $89.00. Hotel usually had what they called " Continental Breakfast " which basically was coffee or tea and yummy fresh croissant and breads with various tiny tins, like you had in this ration pak, of jams and meat pate products.;
Every soldier gets a foldable Esbit stove in his kit, but the prefered way of heating the entrees is in a water filled mess tin over the camp fire with the rest of the squad
I can't believe what a good eater precious little Crystal is! I mean, she doesn't even hesitate before just digging right in! My kids would NEVER do that! Please tell me your secret!!! Love your videos❤
+KatyG82 Thanks, we're glad you're enjoying the videos (Crystal says "Hi"). She's always been adventurous with her food and from an early age we shared whatever we were eating instead of making specific toned-down meals for the kids. There's some things that she'll eat (and enjoy) that I struggle with, like baby octopus.
+Kiwi Dude Awww....tell her I said hi😊 She is too precious. And SO beautiful! You should get her into modeling asap....seriously! Do y'all like honey? I live in Mexico Beach, Florida and there's a little town very close called Wewahitchka(my kids go to school there) and they are famous for their Tupelo honey. Tupelo is a kind of tree that blossoms little white flowers that the bees feed off of. The honey is absolutely delicious! It's known as the best honey you can buy. I would love to send you some! Where can I find an address to send it?
Roggenbrood is some sort of rye bread. It tastes pretty good with slices of cheese. It can also be eaten with pea soup and katenspek(=some sort of bacon but a bit different).
PS: Leberwurst aka Liverwurst doesn't actually contain any liver (anymore). It's become a misnomer over the past decades. And Bierwurst (yes Bier as in beer) is not made with any kind of beer but rather to be eaten while drinking a good beer.
The spoon-bread stigma will never leave you =) All german viewers will remember that =D
OH JA das tun sie!
yes we do ... it was sooooo hilarious. The grapefruit drink is best imho. Thx for sharing,
Not just the german viewers...I also couldn't believe what I was seeing him do :)
das werden sie ihm nie verzeihen
Sizzlik ich hab mir nur gedacht : Was zum Teufel macht der da mit dem löffel im Brot ?
I think the german army will be thrilled that their food meets the taste of a little girl some thousand miles away. 2 thumbs up!

Oh wow, my mouth is watering just looking at the food. Man, I wish I had one of those.
JustYourAverageRetro We love these EPA's.
That beginning was so intense I thought this was a high def recorded battle
Adrian Cota
it would be even more intense if he had at least put a mag in the g36 be4 taking the photo... ;)
=) kein ding. war bei uns nicht anders. aber man sieht es. vielleicht kannst du dich mit dem 2schussmagazin für jäger rausreden...

Man unboxing in 50fps is great :D Did not know what I was missing out on until now.
Always good to see more Kiwi channels on TH-cam, keep up the good work, your representing us well!!!
Josh Coombes Cheers mate.
Very good review! I laughed when you said "Probably a good thing" to her at the end lol
Keep them coming. I got myself a French Ration pack that I'm going to enjoy in 2 weeks. Never had a German one before - I kind of want one now.
Julian Cheers. Let me know what you think of the French RCIR. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
I watch your reviews when I'm hungry. Gives me more motivation to pay attention and feel full when the review ends.
The Cevapcici meal is actually sold in supermarkets over here, in the same tin but with a colorful cardboard wrapper around it.
So happy to see a new video from you!
skinnyhobo The Boss has been in China for 5 weeks, but we'll be cracking into the videos now she's back.
"Mom's rice or that rice?" - someone likes to live dangerously :D
CamaroMann So what dangerous activities do you do everyday
Me: I disagree with my wife.
Dude: How are you still alive :o
I'd say the original Einmannpackung review is one of my favourite videos of yours, so seeing this in my subbox is definitely a sight for sore eyes.
SS-Oberführer Shekelbergstein Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers.
33:30 thats Ćevapi (cevapcici) thats a bbq stuff from the balcans i am surprised its in a german mre :)
+limso cro Immigrants brought it and it caught on.
+limso cro Gulasch is from Hungary originally, both Gulasch and Cevapcici are very popular in Germany.
frantahouska didnt know i come from countries that cevapi describes as a national food...
+limso cro traditionally spread in Germany, since hungary was closely affiliated with parts of the german areas in europe. remember Austria-hungary
You can basically buy the same box of cevapcici in rice in many German supermarkets, just with a nice appealing label on top.
After watching your videos for weeks I finally got my hands on an MRE and I am quite excited to try it out!
Reese_Allstar Awesome! Let me know what you think.

The Boss. :) :)
Tammy Pingel Cheers Tammy.
Thanks for sharing about the MealSpec bags, we will be adding them to our survival kits!
bcgrote The Mealspec heaters are always a pleasure to use.
Kiwi Dude Of the ration heaters I've seen, these seem the best :) .
Despite the pull thingy: "Deckel aufschneiden" literally means cut open lid.
Why do I watch Videos like that late in the night when I should sleep. As a result I get hungry everytime....
Your German is quite good.
I have to say that I like Crystal's eagerness to try new foods. I wasn't as fortunate when I was raising mine. Oftentimes, they'd simply turn away when we brought new dishes to the table. "I don't like it" was the common frain, spoken by them without so much as a taste.

It's funny to see a Kiwi eating a Hungarian dish from a German ration. :--))
+GNU Parted ( ;
Cevapcici isn't a german meal as well.
its serbian language.

These European rations always seem to be much higher in quality compared to the ones given in the US.
As does many things European lol
ImWutzPopular learn how to be gramatically correct. How is that for better quality education.
brenyn sanches Calm down kid.
brenyn sanches how are you going to ask a question, and not end it in the proper punctuation? How is that for better quality education?
I have been bested. Good day kind sir. Although it was a joke you roasted me.
Great one Dude, Been trying to get my hands on this one for a while. I wont give up though, I found one not long ago but it was a bit expensive.. I get excited when I see you put up a new one . As always great review guys.. Love the panda suite adorable.
Rick Simons Cheers Rick. Try searching eBay for 'Einmannpackung' I usually find that returns the most results.

ChaoSSxRiot Thanks. The German EPA and French RCIR are definitely the gourmet solutions for camping food.
If anyone can keep chocolate fresh it will be the Germans!
We love our choclate :D
ThePoptartster It's always a relief to see chocolate that still looks like chocolate.
Kiwi Dude
If you can manage good chocolate and coffee I will fight your wars.
ThePoptartster Lol!
I thought it would be the Swiss.

You & the Boss made this appetizing. I can't wait to order one & try it. You've got such cute daughter. She certainly isn't a picky eater.
Mark Vehar Thank you. I highly recommend giving one a try!
love the time lapse mad me laugh some keep up the videos bro love to watch them
Maybe reflective so you can easily see any wrappers on the ground, so you don't inadvertently leave any behind?
+Lt_Joker well it could be to keep out radiation but that's unlikely

Are soldiers more than dogs or cats to their owners, ah, uppers?

: Thank goodness someone else noticed this. I kept wondering what leaked- my suspicion was the margarine from the grease.
Got very excited to seeing your video in my sub box
really enjoyed this one kiwi dued
Btw, for the main meal it says on the package "cut open" on the top :D. In German though :P.
Iirc the original cold war EPA was "german only" stuff.
The white powdery stuff on the chocolate is the coco butter that has separated. If you melt it it will mix back in.
It's been awhile. Loved seeing the boss! She is getting to be a big girl. Cheers!
Stanley Sprow It has indeed. The Boss has been in China for 5 weeks. Great to have her back!
Great video! :) And here is a little tip for you about german pronunciation: w is always pronunce like v; e = é (like elephant); u = oo (wood?). So! Wurst(sausage) = voorst.

Concerning that interesting looking spread.

Cool to see, that the Gulasch/Lunchmeal comes from Neuenkirchen-Vörden; about 15km from where i live :D
German EPA are quite good. Got some, when i served in the bundeswehr.
Great to see you again
Carbide Jones Cheers.
Bierwurst is called Bierwurst because back in the days they ate it as a side dish for their cold alcholic beverage.
Love the vids!
Keep them coming!
Declan O'Connor Cheers!
Celeste from Singapore here. The flameless ration heater? looked so fun to use. Never see that before in Singapore. The pate and sausage looked delish too.
when it comes to mess kit I never looked back after getting a titanium spork light, strong and the knife part cuts great too.
james fry Sounds awesome!
Unlike most food videos, yours doesn't make me hungry. That's a good thing.
Well done Crystal for giving everything a taste at least once. Many kids these days wouldn't! In fact, I'm in my 20s and I wouldn't have touched anything with the word liver in it so awesomesauce kiddo!
FT W Cheers. She's pretty good with her food. Great to take out to dinner.
Samidella idella
I tried it and gagged every time. i just can't bring myself to eat organs. I think its the mental thought of it rather than the taste. My brains tells me oh no you don't, put that down or something haha
Good Video.Guten Appetit! Nice review. 8:20 The Spoon Disaster ;-)
drecksheep Lol.. Thanks.
Well, it's safe to say that I'd absolutely annihilate this MRE if I had it.
+SolidSnake2948 It's in the 'look for an excuse to go camping just to eat one' categories along with the French RCIR.
Watching your videos makes me hungry
These "Hartkekse" are also and additionally used with the flammable shoepolish of the "Bundeswehr" to ignite fire.... They perfectly char :D
These MRE Reviews are making me hungry.
+Peer M Always good to eat along with me :-)
Kiwi Dude
I have watched alot of your videos and i cant eat this amount of Food :D
am i the only one that finds both the sound of the thick plastic and just military and straighforward look more appetizing than high end food that you see on cooking channels?
Do you eat all the stuff from these pacjages after the videos?
Most of it - yes. Sometimes (as in the case of a 24hr ration) there's just too much to eat in one sitting.
At least you don't throw it away, that's my main point. ^^
maybe you need the day programme of a soldier playing in mud outside :)
Cheers.
The shiny packaging reflects heat, extending the shelf stability of the food contents.
Very nice!
Ahh, the almighty Panzerkekse :D It is rumored, that they are bulletproof and if don't have a Cooker, get that cookie... it will burn for ages. That's why there are just matches in the package but no cooker ;)
Cooker is part of each soldiers kit. Small folding hexamin/esbit cooker
Bloomed
In germany is all ready to eat that means there is no need for a fire or this heating bags to be faster when you eat and an anemy is in the area.
Hello from NRW Germany
You CAN eat the main dishes cold. But the normal way was to heat water in the mess kit with the esbit folding heater that is part of a soldiers equipment.
It tastes a LOT better.
@@mbr5742 ok, its been 4 years where have you been ?
i find these videos so interesting im going to buy one and try it
the second entree is greek/balkan sausages (usually a bit spicy) minced meat formed into sausages and grilled. very tasty :)
***** Soutzoukakia ?
Orestis Grivas Cevapcici :) It says it on the package. But I according to google images it's really kind of the same thing since they are similarly spiced and come from the same general geographic region :)
***** They were fantastic.
Love čevapčiči, its really great with littl ebit mustartard fresh cut onion, and boiled potatos too, or mashed potatos for the matter of fact. I would consider them more of mini meat loaf then sausage.
That sausage and rice dish actually looked really good.
Cracka_ 17 It was really tasty. The rustic sausages were great.
When heating multiple items at once you can turn the top item upside down for an easier fit in the bag. Also if you clean out and flatten the meal containers you've got a nice plate keep your food or small things as well as fixing up a batch of nuddles a.s.o
When I was stationed in (West ) Germany in 70s and 80s whenever i could wangle a 4 day pass i would try and do some traveling. American Express had great tours for Military personnel. For example 4 days and 3 night bus tour to Paris for $89.00.
Hotel usually had what they called " Continental Breakfast " which basically was coffee or tea and yummy fresh croissant and breads with various tiny tins, like you had in this ration pak, of jams and meat pate products.;
was literally just watching old videos of yours wondering where you've been! hope the boss is having a blast in China!
Mariela She recently got back, and she had a great time, thanks. I missed her like crazy.
you're a lucky man, mate
Why?
+FalloutPro21 because he has a beautiful daughter...
She's cheeky, though, given her statement on which rice she prefers ;)
whut? really? damn thats really lucky then
Every soldier gets a foldable Esbit stove in his kit, but the prefered way of heating the entrees is in a water filled mess tin over the camp fire with the rest of the squad
Nice review, good job!
Matt Rouge Cheers.
Mate top stuff, I don't know why I'm watching this (I don't really care for survival/military culture) but I am entranced.
Bierwurst has its name form the fact that you drink beer with it not from an ingredient,
+darktrex117 So what your saying is that in Germany all sausage is bierwurst?
+hiota45
no, you don't drink beer while eating Teewurst. You drink tea while eating Teewurst.
+methanbreather there's also "Kinderwurst" ... just sayin'
well, making kids while eating sausages might not be the usual way but....
Roggenbrood is some sort of rye bread. It tastes pretty good with slices of cheese.
It can also be eaten with pea soup and katenspek(=some sort of bacon but a bit different).
QUAD405 Thanks. I'm really starting to like that bread.
QUAD405
"I would rather have this over the wheat snack bread"
So would a lot of us yanks, but that's standards for you.
GreatBigRanz Lol..
PS: Leberwurst aka Liverwurst doesn't actually contain any liver (anymore). It's become a misnomer over the past decades.
And Bierwurst (yes Bier as in beer) is not made with any kind of beer but rather to be eaten while drinking a good beer.
DJDoena Thanks for that. I must say I'm happy about the first fact, but sad about the second ;-)
DJDoena Thats not right, Leberwurst contains liver !
Theaaax3
+DJDoena This is sad.
Panda is adorbs! I’d have never tried that stuff when I was her age lol
