Gillette Old Type - 1918 Single Ring. A review and shave.

  • A Friendship Shaving review and shave, bought to you by a ninety nine year old, gold coloured, open comb, Gillette single ring old type razor which is in remarkable condition. I used an original, carbon steel, Gillette Blue razor blade which was not a wise decision; the blade does cause me some pain toward the end of the video but it was a good experience. I'm using the iconic American Rubberset 400-3 aluminium shaving brush with a boar bristle knot taken from an inexpensive Omega brush, then finishing off with some Nivea aftershave balm. I love my Nivea; this one is the replenishing balm from the Originals range. Enjoy the video 😃

    I don't have a Single Ring, but I do have several Old Type Ball End handle models. They shave as nicely as many of my other vintage razors, and better than some of there 'newer' models.

      I particularly like the old long comb new, razors. They are lovely balanced razors, that shave very nicely. Marvellous.

      Thank you, Michael for your very kind comments; I really appreciate them. I've enjoyed using this razor very much, with a different blade, from the one in the video, it gives a great shave. All the best to you. Cheers.

      Is the 1918 old type you used in this video really aggressive? I know you said it was, but some don't consider it to be an aggressive razor. Let me know how well the razor performs! I'm thinking about getting one of my own to complete my vintage Gillette razor collection.

    Hi Mark. I got home this afternoon to find my Gillette single ring had been delivered. It's a 1909 silver plate and I just couldn't resist using it straight away. I wasn't disappointed. It was smooth, effective and an absolute pleasure to shave with. I used Gillette shaving cream, a Semogue OC boar bristle brush and a Gillette Super Silver blade. I only use a Super Silver on special occasions because they are becoming few and far between but I decided that this was definitely a special occasion. I got a BBS+ with no nicks or cuts. I feel honoured to own this razor and will treasure it always. Thanks for the video, Mark. Superb, as always. Take care, mate. Please keep up the good work.

      Hi mate. I'm sorry it took a few days to reply. What a great razor - 100 years old; that just blows me away. I think it's wonderful especially if you think how dramatically the world has changed in that time, yet the razor works as well as it always did. Fantastic! I do believe you enjoyed your new razor 😉

    Man I love Gillette DE razors. In fact it's my number one passion to collect and use Gillette DE razors. I have a 1917 silver old type, a tech ball end, six super speeds and three adjustables in my collection. It's great. I love the hobby.

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's flipping fantastic, isn't it? You've got some really nice razors in your collection. I would love a re-plated Gillette Bulldog; a 1938-45 Gillette Tech and about a dozen others 😃👍 I wish I was good at restoring the old cases. I bet they would sell well. Cheers pal.

      Do you own any other Super Speeds besides the Black Handle? I saw one of your older videos where you use the Black Handle.

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have a 1958 TV Special but that is all in the way of super speeds. I keep meaning to try some of the 1940's super speeds, rather than the flair tips but I haven't got around to it yet. They seem quite expensive on eBay and I suspect they are a great shave judging by how popular they seem.

      Oh yeah, collecting vintage Gillette DE razors is fun, however, for me restoring them is also fun. The Old type is definitely BA. Not for the beginner imho.

  • @FriendshipShaving
    @FriendshipShaving  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey, Jonathon. It's all so subjective isn't it? When I made the video, it was the most aggressive razor I had. It is more aggressive than a lot of my razors but it isn't super aggressive. A lot depends on which blade I use it with. It's great shave, if you get one I'm sure you'll like it, I recently acquired a bar handled Gillette New, which is a lot more aggressive than this razor but still a nice shave. Cheers

      @FriendshipShaving  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, Fred. I really like my 102A Old Type, with no serial numbers. It is a slightly milder shave but still very good for such an old razor. When I got into shaving with a safety razor I never imagined being able to shave with a razor over 100 years old! It is fantastic! Take care.

    Great shave and soap, beautiful razor (99 years old the cool factor is off the charts)! May be try an across the grain pass instead of an against the grain pass, might work better. Happy New Year my friend! :)

      Adventures In Wet Shaving. I normally get away with it using a new blade. I did enjoy using this razor and have popped a Ladas blade in for the last few days. It's much better. Happy New Year, Eric.

    I ordered a refurbished 1919 Single Ring Old Type but am only doing a cold water single-pass because my neck would be raw if I tried any against-the-grain shenanigans with a razor that aggressive. I might use a Derby or a Personal Med-prep - not brave enough to Feather it. I Feathered a Gillette Tech. I love Feather blades in my Slim with the number set at 3. All that said, I hope the aggressiveness of this old razor will give me a CC shave with a single pass. Open combs look easier to rinse.

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  ปีที่แล้ว

      Very wise. They are a bit aggressive against the grain. I believe I am correct in writing that the original instructions recommend only shaving with the grain. I'll have to look that up and check. All the best.

    Since this is a military issue gold razor l figure that this razor was probably owned by an officer since they were able to purchase the more fancy ones whereas the nickle platted "ball end" types were usually issued to the enlisted men.

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a really good point Anthony. Thank know you for the information; I must admit it didn't occur to me, at the time but you usually see nickel-plated razors of this type, as you pointed out. Cheers 😀👍

    What year you think the blade is from? Where did you get so old blades from?

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know they sell old blades on eBay, but I believe this came with the razor. I don't know what date was but it was very old! I have a few odd packs of old blades that people have sent when I've bought the odd item. I'm never sure whether to try them or not. I suspect modern blades are much better. Cheers.

      I asked my father whi bern shaving with DE razor before the cartridge come, and he said the blades were terrible and far from being comfortable. Cuts and weepers in almost every shave. Maybe it's wise to stay away from them😉

    How do date codes and serial numbers work for the old Gillette old type razors? I have a 1917 Gillette Old Type Single Ring SILVER color razor and the serial number for it is E103096. I know the year, but I am wondering how the letters and numbers work.

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Jonathan. This is a really useful link:
      www.badgerandblade.com/forum/wiki/US_Gillette_Dating_Information
      The original, very early razors (Gillette double rings) only had a numerical ID. In 1907 they started to prefix the number with a letter A. Imagine having the A1 razor! They made 999999 razors with each alphabetical prefix. In May 1921, with the introduction of the New Improved they started to number their razors from 1A. In 1930 they did away with the serial numbers for a while. There's more information than I've quoted here but I thought it was very interesting. Thanks for the question as it prompted me to have another look. I hope this is what you were looking for. 👍

    Would it hurt to wet your face with cold water instead of hot/warm? I'm tired of waiting for my sink water to heat up which takes about 11 freaking minutes. I heard that some people say they used cold water before and it was more soothing than hot/warm.

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No it doesn't hurt at all. I use cold water, about half of the year. In the winter, I graduate to warm water as there's no heating in the shave den. Warm water encourages a stronger blood flow, closer to the surface of the skin. Some people find they don't cut themselves as often, using cold water or, if they do, blood flow is considerably less. I find I have less irritation with cold water, not that I have much anyway.

      You're a wise man, Bill. Apparently the blade edge can deteriorate over time; I'm not certain if this is true or not, but I can imagine it is, especially on a carbon steel blade.
