1883 is one of the best series I have ever seen -- far surpassing Yellowstone. I just finished ep 10 and I am still in total disbelief at how good this series is. Big fan too of Brian Tyler's music in this and other productions. The series is just great and so worth your time.
You know it's good writing when you feel like you've actually lost someone in your life. I believe I'm still in the denial phase, as I can't believe she's truly gone. Such a tear-jerker episode!
1883, WHAT A SHOW. This last episode had my husband & I both in tears. So sad, to see Elsa go, such a very strong willed woman. You know the writer & actors did an awesome job when you have the audience in tears. KEEP BRING THEM♥️
The ending of this show reminded me of one of the best books I have read. The quote: For a lifetime was but a moment in that place, and each man dreams his own heaven.And in the darkness David closed his eyes, as all that was lost was found again.”
I'm surprised you didn't mention the hummingbird in Shea's scene on the beach. I took that to represent Elsa since she said she'd meet him there. God, this show was amazing.
@miknosilanooram ah see I thought it was Elsa because he said that his wife was part of him now and seeing through his eyes. So he was going to let her "see" the ocean. And then Elsa said she'd meet him there. Either way, I think it's beautiful ❤️.
Actually I didn't even realize that was Tim McGraw until it was over and I was like "Seriously? I didn't know who it was but I thought it was someone who is an actor first and foremost". I knew Faith Hill the entire time but I didn't realize that her IRL husband played James. That blew me away when I found out.
I am in absolute stunned amazement at the quality of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's acting. The fact that they're married in real life brings a chemistry to their roles that I don't think they could have got with anyone else. But as a whole - the cast they picked packed such an incredible punch, it was perfect. Sam Elliott was incredible - it was gut-wrenching watching the scene where he loses his family
This episode shook me to my core. It truly is a nod to the writers and director when you feel the emotion of a scene. As another commenter said, “you feel like you lost a loved one”. I felt so moved by this episode. The actors were top notch. I tip my hat to them all!
As a father of 2 grown daughters, the show really hit me personally. Watching Elsa "find" herself with the support of her father was extraordinary. Tim McGraw was exceptional. I could have watched multiple seasons. It ended too soon.
Agree, it is so hard to find something as excellent as this series has been that it is really hard to let it go, to see it end. Now I have nothing to look forward to on the tv.
Taylor did do a throw back to season one episode 1 of Yellowstone. After Lee Dutton is killed John sees Kacey riding on horseback up the road with Lee draped over the saddle horn, John takes the horse and walks off to a tree to rest and tells Lee to tell him where he wants to be buried, then we see a small bird pecking at the ground and John says "okay".
Yeah I saw another comment point that out... I didn't even think about it. That's beautiful if so. However if it's the exact same spot you'd think they'd have uncovered Elsa's bones if they dug up in the exact same spot. I think it's not the same spot but it's definitely meant to call back to that moment. That and the whole dialogue about the birds to begin with.
Elsa's death was presented in the most creative way I have ever seen. I loved this series so much! Once a week was not enough and certainly 10 episodes was not enough!
The entire time I was wondering why it said they were going to Oregon when we know they settled in Montana. I love how they tied it into her death. It gave it more meaning and by extension it gives the Dutton family tradition we know about in Yellowstone more meaning. So from that standpoint I totally agree with you it's one of the most creative deaths ever seen on TV.
Still haven't stopped bawling like a baby. Having a hard time accepting the fiction of this entire series. This is as good as it gets. On par with Lonesome Dove which is the watemark for epic westerns.
One thing you forgot to mention is that John Dutton won't sell the land he made a promise that he can't break. I think the promise is the one that James made with the tribe to give them the land back in 7 generations. This is why John cannot sell any of the land to anybody, his family has to give it back to the tribe. I think this was instilled in every generation of Dutton to make sure that the land goes back to the natives, the original owners.
It was a heartbreaking ending. Seeing Elsa die, I cried. Because I lost my daughter a year ago. It was hard to watch at times, but couldn't take my eyes from it! Truly enjoyed it.
😢 Sam & Elsa shouldn't have separated. I like the movie. Each has a story but where is Sam's story. If he found out about Elsa's death. Only watched the previews of 1883. But I watched Yellowstone. I Still watch it Every time I have a chance.
This is one of the few series I've re-watched each episode at lease once. It has truly been a pleasure, thanks to all who are involved in the production.
On Amazon Prime on Season 1, episode 1 trailer, John Dutton (Kevin Costner) says twice that he is the 4th generation Dutton which would make Tate the 6th generation.
Just a thought... if we count 7 generations to Tate that would also make sense because he is born from both native american and Dutton blood. He has claim to both sides so it could just mean once he rises to take over he turns it all in to native american land.
Absolutely outstanding recap of without doubt the most incredibly well written show from the genius that is Taylor Sheridan! 1883 started off slowly at first, but morphed into something that the last three episodes surpassed Yellowstone! He is a national treasure! Never been a fan boy of television before but I swear every episode of everything he writes is like a movie and incredibly well filmed! He has set the bar for above everyone else!

The worst thing about this show is that this amazing journey came to a head in 10 episodes. I wish this could have been stretched out for like three seasons of them traveling cross county. They packed lot of emotion, energy and depth into one season, and did an amazing job of it, but it just leaves me wanting more.
This show had a big impact on me. Excellent acting all the way around, and all the death and dying and killing just underscored the fragility of life. Sam Elliot (who was brilliant in this show), survived so much death and killing, only to take his own life at the end. That hit me like a sucker punch in the gut. Elsa's beautiful and insightful narrations also made it. The ineffable beauty of nature combined with its indifference and apparent cruelty tells the story of our lives on this Earth. The dream of a better life is what shaped the American character more than anything else, but here we are today, and what have we really learned?
I added on another site about about 12 hours ago that a generation is usually seen as 20 years. 7 x 20= 140 years. 1883 + 140 = 2023. I also had chills at Elsa's death scene as she chose the spot, James cradled Elsa in his lap propped against a tree. I immediately flashed back to John Dutton cradling son, Lee, saying we'll just rest a bit until we figure a spot to bury him...it was near the headstones of Duttons past. Also, the thing with birds: Elsa's first memories of birds being so smart, hummingbird visiting Shea by the sea, a bird lighting in front of John and Lee with JD nodding his head "OK" and Beth calling that ? Crow on the ranch porch smart because it flew away before she thought about shooting it.
I have to say, her narration has been unbearable. My family has called Tennessee home for many generations, and while I understand that the actor who plays her character is from California, her accent is truly terrible. She tries way too hard pronouncing every single word and it’s all over the place. I’ve tried hard to ignore it but it’s really painful to listen to lol
@@MrJoe-qh2vb sadly, if you don’t push some “woke” in there somewhere, you can’t get your show green-lighted now days. I would have liked to have seen the life they left in tennessee. Elsa says early on it wasn’t financial need? I have to believe every one of them regretted making the trip in the end? That’s a lot of anger, guilt and bitterness to carry forward.
The bird on the beach was Elsa. She said she would see him on the beach. The bird at the death scene is a shout back to Lee Duttons death where John Dutton sits under the same tree and asks him to pick his spot. A bird lands to choose the spot.
You folks have great memories for details and are great at catching the meanings in certain scenes such as the birds. Well done. Great shows and great fans.
I can't help thinking that if Elsa would have kept on her Comanche instead of the dress Margaret made her change into clothes she might not have been shot.
The final episode of 1883 was poetic to say the least. It was inspiring, knowledgeable and filled with passionate. When I think of Elsa I think of passionate because that's how she lived her life. For narration of the show proved that she was indeed a passionate and perceptive young woman On the Western trail, what she had to work with, and what she had available to her and whom she had available, I can just see inside her heart and it reminds me of my own life lived with passion. Although misguided at times. I love the scene where she rode off with Sam at the end of the episode. And he was so humble, honorable, and loyal. Through life and even through death, although he did not know, when two people get married they become one flesh.
Birds have been believed to be the returning spirits/souls in a lot of cultures including some European ones. We had a family of Cardinals nest in our back yard after my Mom died. My daughter would say that Grandma came by every time she saw the momma Cardinal. With that in mind, I almost fell over when the hummingbird showed up in front of Shea. and it was like he recognized that too, because he almost smiles. And then looks content. That was a jaw dropping scene for me. By 10 minutes in, I was already accepting Elsa's death. But it really "got dusty" when Lissa dies. I don't know why, but that one really bothered me too.

Not gonna lie, it broke my heart when she called her father a liar for saying that she was not gonna die, I keep forgetting that she's just a kid in a woman's body, how her voice breaks like a child's...
Actually felt that Elsa was dead the entire time and telling the story from beyond through her narrations, which were equally ghostly as the one at the end of the closing episode. Otherwise it wouldn't have made sense to show her shot with the arrow in the very first episode. It makes sense to tell a story set it in the past, as the past. Anyone else interested in a spinoff with Sam's life?
@@drew4317 I actually kind of was making fun of her for the narration too. But I don't think it was a waste of time or anything. I was like "Jeez someone get this girl a pen and paper or something for this poetry" but I was still shocked when she died. Until the end that is and I was like "OH okay I see where they're going with this". It explained a lot of things namely why they stopped in Montana vs. Oregon which 1883 establishes is their mission from Episode 1. It also explains the Dutton tradition of burying their loved ones close by, like REALLY close on the ranch. And then by the time I found out Season 2 takes place in 1932 which is... I don't know you do the math number of years later, why we'll probably never see the characters from 1883 ever again. I love that they did it in a single season. But I was one of those people rolling their eyes on the episode Ennis died like "Surely he'll get revived by the end of the ep... oh shit nevermind". But in HER case I was like "There is no way they're gonna kill her off she's too important, she is THE MAIN CHARACTER." which for 1883 she was. But I love that I had that position on it because that made her death hurt more, the legions of people whining and crying about it in the comments (both good crying and bad) and how some are even swearing the series off going forward is a testament to how well they did it. Nobody wants to see a loved one die. Nobody. Whether you know them personally or not. But to act like she could take a lethal shot with poison caked all over it nonetheless and somehow swing back around and be up in time for Season 2 is just disingenuous and it's not realistic. It's a wonder she didn't die of a number of different other ways honestly but that one if they gave her plot armor for that people would be complaining about that, too. I kind of knew based on the opening sequence from Episode 1 that she was going to die. It wasn't until Episode 9 when she got shot and that whole thing happened that I realized "Oh this is happening THIS season and sooner than I expected".
@@sweetjrewing5435 I also could have done with less narration, some of which struck me as trying too hard to be impressively insightful. Also, too many lingering shots of Elsa's pretty, pretty face. This was a great saga, nonetheless. Elsa was a great character, so were Thomas, Ennis, Margaret and John. Still, nothing compares with Lonesome Dove for me. Woodrow Call and Augustus McCrae were two of the most interesting characters ever written, and Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall made them unforgettable.
It's poetic, sad lined with beautiful. The story doesn't go the way you want it to, but it knows it and immerses itself with the reality that life doesn't always either, but when you finish the last episode you wouldn't have it any other way.
@saucepan that's the best take on the show and life I've read to date. So true that life doesn't always go the way we want, but in the end we accept that. And we don't regret living our lives even when we look back on the tough times. The beauty in life, even when there are only a precious few positive memories, makes the journey worth the pain.
Anyone else draw the conclusion that Elsa was already dead before the show even started... where she was telling her story throughout the series from the afterlife? Her being shown getting shot in ep.1 had to be for a reason.. then her continuing to tell her story after her death drew me to the conclusion that she had been telling her story from the afterlife all along..
That was the whole perspective of the show, if you only came to realize this in the last episode then you weren't watching it properly. It's like the West version of Anne Frank.
What suprised me most? the fact that my husband had to come and comfort me paniking that something was wrong because I was actually BAWLING my eyes out at Elsa's passing. What a fanatistic ride. One of the best shows I have ever seen and I have yet to watch Yellowstone yet and now they jsut brougth out 1923 so i guess ill watch that next.
Great Summary. It is important to note that ELSA's meeting up with SAM was 1 year after her death in the scene, maybe SAM was already dead and was waiting for her arrival. Note this takes us back to scene from Yellowstone when they burnt the body of the guys who tried to rape the native girl and what Monica's Grandfather said they were destined to live in the afterlife forever... question is, where is the arrow...??
i felt i was losing my brother because of illness, after four days because I'm not in the mainland... i talked to my brother and it seems he is going to be good which i still don't know. i watch the last episode of 1883 and man i lost it.... the last episode made me cry like i haven't since my teens! i recorded it and saw myself once and it made me ball in tears again. thank you for making something to let me get rid of these emotions of lost .
I loved 1883, it started and ended to soon. Taylor is a great writer i prey he releases another show soon. Taylor keep doing what you do. I appreciate and respect keeping todays way of life out of your writing. It's cowboy in and clean.
I really wanted a reunion with Elsa and Ennis riding off together. It would have made more sense and been so touching. Although I can also see how Elsa has evolved since Ennis died so maybe meeting up with Sam is where her mind would take her. It's just that Ennis would be someone she can reunite with in death.
@Jane Maybe but if we're thinking about it that way I would think Sam would reunite with his other wife who he probably had a longer and more significant life connection with. Ennis died right at the peak of his love for Elsa who was his first love so I'd imagine his heaven would be wanting to reunite with her. A little bit like how in Titanic Rose meets up with Jack when she dies, bugger the husband and children she had spent the entire rest of her life with haha I know Elsa didn't spend much time with either of her loves, and time spent doesn't necessarily equate to depth of relationship, but I still feel like she and Ennis shared something unique in being each other's first loves and if he hadn't died I doubt she would have looked twice at Sam. Ennis died believing they would marry and his last words were that he loved her, whereas I don't feel as though the relationship meant the same to Sam for that to be his spiritual ending. However, if we're looking at it from the perspective of it being Elsa's choice or her mind creating that I can see why Sam is the one but still wish it had been Ennis she reunited with in death.
This is why I said from the beginning she will die. Ms May is much more than a tv actress. She isn't going to stay in a series long. She has bigger fish to fry.
I can’t believe how a show could rip my guts out like episode 10 did for me. All I can think is how can I miss a well played character more than my family members who have passed on. I hope there are many flashbacks of Elsa in the upcoming episodes. And, are we to automatically know how YELLOWSTONE’s name came about? I get ‘yellow’ from Elsa’s hair, but ‘stone’? I guess we will find out when the Dutton settle in Paradise Valley.
Yellowstone comes from the yellow rocks in the river? And in the area. The water is extremely clear in Montana - except where ppl n boats rafts go in n out of the waters. Buy if you ever get up there? Look at the lakes and rivers. Theres light blue-green rocks, dark red rocks and the yellow rocks all over. The yellow ones are mostly chert. Which is very hard n soft to the touch. Its so visible in the yellowstone river? That you instantly understand how it came to its name. And that's the why to yellow stone - 'cause there's just a whole bunch of yellow rocks all over. And agates, too... ;)
I also felt like I had a loss of a loved one, it was especially bad for me seeing as I just lost my sweet Momma and my beautiful sister! That is GREAT writing indeed! You also know it’s great writing when you have to remind yourself that it is just a show, in which I’ve had to do more than once on my Yellowstone and 1883 journey! All in all although I don’t want it all to end, I will be OK with it! Taylor Sheridan, will always keep me wanting more!! Oh and Mayor of Kingstown??? Also really good! Thanks Taylor!!
I do think Sam was waiting for her, that's why the horizon was empty and then she was there. The whole show was so well done, amazing acting. It was definitely difficult to remember that they were fictional
I do think she was yhe hummingbird. She was looking at the bird at the end and I believe she understood she could "travel " that's why she said it was so smart
You got it wrong, John saying all the Dutton buried on the Yellowstone means he meant James. Who was probably killed and his wife asked his brother to come to Yellowstone that's the story of 1923. And the 7th generation Dutton is Tate who is 1/2 Indian.
I thought maybe Elsa's child would introduce native blood into the Dutton gene pool which would've made for a great story line, but no matter, Casey's son is native and when he inherits the ranch, that prophecy will have been fulfilled.
Over the years I've seen some really good and a few great shows and movies. But there are only very few that captured me like Yellowstone and 1883. Especially in 1883 I felt so connected to the characters and the ending was really hard to watch - I pretty much denied to accept it until the end credits rolled. Even the day after I still thought about that episode and the show itself made me thinking for more than a few days. From my point of view Taylor and his team have created an exceptional world here and also the actors have done an amazing job. I can't wait for Season 5 and new episodes of 1883.
I didn't believe she was going to die in the end but at the same time it makes sense the way they did it. They decided wherever she died was where she'd be buried and that was where they'd settle so she would never be far away from them. It ties in beautifully with what we found out early on in Yellowstone that many, many generations (I think it was seven) Duttons were all buried there when they died and I had forgotten about that until more recently. She was the first one. It also explains why they were originally traveling to Oregon but decided to stop in Montana. It was because of her death. I thought it was kind of ballsy to start the entire series out by showing her getting shot, making me wonder if and when that would ever get revisited and if not was it a dream or something? I had nearly forgotten about it until it happened again later on in the show on Episode 9. Tragic that it all happened based on a misunderstanding, but if they had somehow re-written the entire thing to show some miraculous recovery the show would've lost points in my mind. Some people say this episode and her death ruined the entire thing for them and I am just like ... this is one of the most beautiful and powerful moments I've ever seen in any TV show. Bar none. If not the best.
I am surprised you did not mention the similarities between Elsa's death and when John Dutton (Kevin Costner) sits under the tree holding Lee after he dies. Watch the two scenes again, they are pretty similar with references to looking for a spot and the significance of the bird. Also, who do you think the humming bird that visited Shea on the beach was supposed to be? Elsa said she would meet him there.
I’m pretty convinced that Elsa started the Dutton family curse. Every first born Dutton that we know of has died (James sacrifice for the land). We saw johns flashback with him talking to his passing father and his dad says he misses his wife and then adds “and your (johns) brother god dammit” and lee, which was Johns first born so we know of at least 3 generations of firstborn duttons dying. I worry for young Tate and his future of the Dutton ranch
I think if Elsa would have lived, Shea would not have taken his own life...they were connected I think and she gave him hope and a want to go on! It all breaks my heart! I wonder if Elsa's spirit is the wolf that visits Kayce🤔
I think the most poetic ending of Yellowstone is for John and Casey to make Tate the official owner and inheritor. This brings the Yellowstone land back to the tribe, and it also gets rid of federal tax issues and private investment harassment. Been saying this since season 1.
1883 left me starving for more. I have never been so crushed knowing that there wouldn't be any more episodes since Friends ended. Yeah yeah, there will be 1932 but I feel like that will be like trying to watch the Friends spinoff Joey.
Just incredible writing and acting. Taylor Sheridan is probably the best writer, actor, producer and director. I felt that I was on the journey the entire time.
I'm with you here. I think Billy Dukes is wrong. Like you, I believed James Dutton is Costner's great grandfather, so his generational count is way off.

I will miss this show, alot until it returns and also these recaps. What a ride! I guess that Elsas death had to be in order for the family to defend the ranch with such fervour. It was acquired by great family sacrifice. One thing that I missed was that Elsa didn't ask for James to get word back to Sam. It's sad to think of him waiting and wondering.
I agree - I felt like the Sam and Elsa’s story got cut off - I felt like they really loved each other - maybe it will get addressed in the next season - I hate feeling like something is left unsaid - same as on Yellowstone they didn't show Rip not finding Beth after she got blown up etc
@@melodykennedy6592 I doubt there will be a second season, there's really no need for it. The story will continue on in 1932. I'm sure we will see some of the cast from 1883 in flashbacks on both 1932 and Yellowstone.

I have been a huge fan of Graham Greene since the early 70’s when I saw him as a young man in a TV program called, I think, “The Last of His Tribe”, or something to that effect. He is absolutely one of the best actors in every production in which he has appeared. So, here I am…Graham Greene and I are both close to 50 years older and, I am still admiring this man’s acting skills. Amazing. I don’t know what will happen in “1932” but I will be there, God willing and the creeks don’t rise, to watch it along with Season 5 of Yellowstone. I don’t remember this country being this excited to watch a wonderful what they used to refer to as a “mini-series” since “Roots”. And as far as I am concerned, Taylor Sheridan is genius pure and simple….when Shay is sitting on the beach talking to his dead wife and that tiny hummingbird hovers in front of his face… each studying the other…oh, my God, that gave me such chills. I already have Seasons 1, 2, and 3 and will soon have Season 4 so I can rewatch it anytime I want…but I have not been able to find a dvd of 1883 and that upsets me greatly. I hope it just is not out yet.
Sheridan may not have made a faux pas with the John Dutton comment. Elsa may have been the only person buried at that particular spot and later there was a family burial plot that was closer to where John’s house would eventually be built.
I started thinking that the Tree James and Elsa rested against was the same one we see in Yellowstone, but realised that the time difference would make that unlikely. Having said that, I don't know what sort of tree it was, and how long they live and how big they grow.
Since she'd declared herself a grown woman, who else thought Elsa ought to have decided to stay with Sam, and let her family go on w/o her, and Sam ought to have called on her to stay with him where her true place was? In such perilous times, how could these newlyweds face a whole year apart, how would Elsa make it back to Sam?
Honestly if she had just been wearing her indian dress they would have never attacked her. Her momma made her wear that dress and when she gave in she surrendered her will and died because of it.
@@joannaashlock3276 Blame? Nobody's to blame. The whole saga was about choices, most well intentioned, many of which were wrong in retrospect. If the men had stayed with the women instead of going after the bandits that killed the Indian women, maybe they could have protected them, explained to the Indians. Everyone was making decisions on the fly. Margaret was trying to protect Elsa from the men at the fort, so insisted she put on a dress. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
Yellowstone has been my favorite series and look forward to watching more episodes of the Dutton Family. However, 1883 was an outstanding series! I loved every episode, every character, the gorgeous scenery, and Taylor Sheridan’s writing. I cried for a day after the last episode. It was done in such a beautiful manner.
Rainwater knows the Duttons. Not just the current ones. He knows them all. He is both a security layer but also an ominous representation, but a friend to them, because his taught history and people are spiritually intertwined with the Duttons. The chief they asked John for permission to bury was Spotted eagle. His son honored his father. Just as John did Elsa in her death. She is now, in a sense, the protector spirit that guides all their lives. The perils that befell her, befalls them, but the balance is kept by the willpower drawn from Lightning with yellow hair. The prophecy I expect will be addressed in the next seasons of Yellowstone. Q'rianka Kilcher will probably make a full return at some point, as the tribe's lawyer/fixer and most ruthless force against Dutton's legal enemies.
I never did get into Yellowstone much but I do love this show, 1883. That said, I did watch enough to know that Kayce has a son. If you count correctly from James, not including him, and since Kayce's son is Half N.A., it would be cool to see this is how the Crow people get their land back, by this relative of the tribe and Dutton family. It would be even cooler if they could find that his son is related to Spotted Eagle by what ever number Great Grandfather that would be. Just a thought.
Same here! I watched 1883 before Yellowstone and I love the substance that 1883 offered. Yellowstone is good but it’s a huge mess and reminds me of a cowboy version of Sons of Anarchy.
I agree, Yellowstone is good just too much nonsensical drama. I've known ranchers, they are tough as leather but a murder and npcs with cowboy hats on willing to die and murder ever few episodes is ridiculous. And Beth... please. Her and rip both are drawn in to turn on the women and make all the girl fans and a few men, happy. Their characters both exaggerate what I'm talking about. I know everyone here is going to beat the hell out of me for this comment. Sorry, I'm a guy who demands decent writing and have ripped apart shows i DO follow when they drop the ball. Yellowstone could have been one of the best shows ever but they're over the top drama has made it ridiculous. I'm not even going to reply to all the a$$beatings you guys are about to give me

seems odd to see "fort Casper" and hearing CY Ranch that is now under Alcova. Being a Casperite just seems weird to see the wrong mountian behind it. but I am still happy to know my hometown made a TV show!
Five year old John from ‘1883’ is John Dutton’s grandfather. He is the father of John’s father that was shown as a 90 year old man dying on ‘Yellowstone’. James and Margaret Dutton from ‘1883’ are the great grandparents to John Dutton from ‘Yellowstone’.
@@sweetjrewing5435 I'm sorry JR. Yes in my opinion it was much better. The characters were terrific, the storylines were brilliant and it was realistic. Not that I know what the American west in 1883 was like, but it was very convincing for me. The last season of Yellowstone was poor compared to other seasons, but watching 1883 gives me hope that Tyler Sheridan can write a brilliant series and has the capacity to improve the next season of Yellowstone. i was surprised by the lack of proper goodbye between Elsa and her mother. It was known to both that they would not see each other again when Elsa and John left. Just seemed a little strange.
Times were different back then. Death was common on any day as a birth..or just getting through any day....they were both very tough women, and knew each other so well, words were just a mere imposition...they both knew their destinies at their goodbye...
If I were the mother I would have also taken the boy on horseback and gone with Elsa and John while Shea followed with the wagon. Dang, it was only 2 days more on a horse vs in a wagon.

The simple answer going through my mind is that Elsa is buried beyond 300 yards but a family cemetery was started within 300 yards in 1886. I didn’t think of it as a plot hole.
I thought she was going to be buried at "The Rock", where Johns father died....and at some point someone is gonna search up there and find Johns wedding ring, likely only to bury it with John though.
@@lthunt6613 Mmm...6 months on the trail and 2 and a half years to build a cabin. It's possible. But don't forget the big house in Yellowstone isn't the same cabin that James built. Same location? Don't know. There are a number of possibilities. Sheridan wrote the wrong year in the script (typo), Costner read the wrong year in the script, Elsa is buried at a different location prior to the family graveyard being established, Elsa was moved (doubtful) the big house was only constructed on that site in 1886 but I think we have flogged this dead horse enough. Unless Sheridan can clarify.
As for the 1886 reference, it is highly possible that Miss Elsa's grave was moved to the current location of 300 yards from John's back porch. Gravesites have been known to be moved so it's just a thought to consider. Who knows, we might get an explanation in 1932?
I loved that this was wrapped up in one season. I hate having to wait a year or more for new seasons. Only part I didn't agree with is shea's suicide, but you could see it coming from the beginning, his family meant everything to him.
It actually said the Dutton story would continue this fall. That could be "Yellowstone" or "1932". Sheridan said in a "Variety " interview that he was done looking at this specific period in time.
Losing his beloved, burning their home, his last trail ride, promising Oregon to those who didn't listen to him, and letting his wife see the ocean through his eyes... there was nothing left for him to do but join her...
I know that this is a story, tho living back in those days was simular. It hit me watching it yesterday that while this was happening out west, back here in PA our house was being built. And to think of how many people lived here thru the years. How many made that trip west. Love History!!
I really wish they had stretched these characters out into many seasons, including Elsa, instead of only one!! Ugh!! I’ve tried to watch Yellowstone 3 times, and just cannot get into it, but 1883 is an absolute masterpiece, which I’ve already watched the entire season 5 times!! It’s sooo good! This would have been so much bigger than Yellowstone, if it had been given the chance, because 1883 has what it takes to keep people glued to the screen!! 👀
I can’t help but think of the yellow bird that James and Elsa watch while under the tree, the dove that is watched by John as he holds Lee under the tree, and lastly the hummingbird on the beach…
The Dutton family tree circulating online shows young John fro 1883 (John Dutton Sr born 1878), John Jr. (Costner's Dad) born 1910, and John Dutton (Yellowstone) born 1955. I don't believe that tree to be set in stone, and also shows John (Costner) not being born until his father was 45.
1883 is one of the best series I have ever seen -- far surpassing Yellowstone. I just finished ep 10 and I am still in total disbelief at how good this series is. Big fan too of Brian Tyler's music in this and other productions. The series is just great and so worth your time.

Actually I didn't even realize that was Tim McGraw until it was over and I was like "Seriously? I didn't know who it was but I thought it was someone who is an actor first and foremost". I knew Faith Hill the entire time but I didn't realize that her IRL husband played James. That blew me away when I found out.
I am in absolute stunned amazement at the quality of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's acting. The fact that they're married in real life brings a chemistry to their roles that I don't think they could have got with anyone else. But as a whole - the cast they picked packed such an incredible punch, it was perfect. Sam Elliott was incredible - it was gut-wrenching watching the scene where he loses his family

This episode shook me to my core. It truly is a nod to the writers and director when you feel the emotion of a scene. As another commenter said, “you feel like you lost a loved one”. I felt so moved by this episode. The actors were top notch. I tip my hat to them all!

As a father of 2 grown daughters, the show really hit me personally. Watching Elsa "find" herself with the support of her father was extraordinary. Tim McGraw was exceptional. I could have watched multiple seasons. It ended too soon.

Taylor did do a throw back to season one episode 1 of Yellowstone. After Lee Dutton is killed John sees Kacey riding on horseback up the road with Lee draped over the saddle horn, John takes the horse and walks off to a tree to rest and tells Lee to tell him where he wants to be buried, then we see a small bird pecking at the ground and John says "okay".

However if it's the exact same spot you'd think they'd have uncovered Elsa's bones if they dug up in the exact same spot. I think it's not the same spot but it's definitely meant to call back to that moment. That and the whole dialogue about the birds to begin with.
Elsa's death was presented in the most creative way I have ever seen. I loved this series so much! Once a week was not enough and certainly 10 episodes was not enough!

The entire time I was wondering why it said they were going to Oregon when we know they settled in Montana. I love how they tied it into her death. It gave it more meaning and by extension it gives the Dutton family tradition we know about in Yellowstone more meaning. So from that standpoint I totally agree with you it's one of the most creative deaths ever seen on TV.
Still haven't stopped bawling like a baby. Having a hard time accepting the fiction of this entire series. This is as good as it gets. On par with Lonesome Dove which is the watemark for epic westerns.

One thing you forgot to mention is that John Dutton won't sell the land he made a promise that he can't break. I think the promise is the one that James made with the tribe to give them the land back in 7 generations. This is why John cannot sell any of the land to anybody, his family has to give it back to the tribe. I think this was instilled in every generation of Dutton to make sure that the land goes back to the natives, the original owners.

It was a heartbreaking ending. Seeing Elsa die, I cried. Because I lost my daughter a year ago. It was hard to watch at times, but couldn't take my eyes from it! Truly enjoyed it.

The 10 best episodes I have ever seen on TV. Using Elsa's story to get the Dutton's home was a brilliant idea.
I loved it too, but have to say it is second best for me, Lonesome Dove will always be my favorite.
Absolutely outstanding recap of without doubt the most incredibly well written show from the genius that is Taylor Sheridan! 1883 started off slowly at first, but morphed into something that the last three episodes surpassed Yellowstone! He is a national treasure! Never been a fan boy of television before but I swear every episode of everything he writes is like a movie and incredibly well filmed! He has set the bar for above everyone else!

The worst thing about this show is that this amazing journey came to a head in 10 episodes. I wish this could have been stretched out for like three seasons of them traveling cross county. They packed lot of emotion, energy and depth into one season, and did an amazing job of it, but it just leaves me wanting more.

This show had a big impact on me. Excellent acting all the way around, and all the death and dying and killing just underscored the fragility of life. Sam Elliot (who was brilliant in this show), survived so much death and killing, only to take his own life at the end. That hit me like a sucker punch in the gut. Elsa's beautiful and insightful narrations also made it. The ineffable beauty of nature combined with its indifference and apparent cruelty tells the story of our lives on this Earth. The dream of a better life is what shaped the American character more than anything else, but here we are today, and what have we really learned?
I added on another site about about 12 hours ago that a generation is usually seen as 20 years. 7 x 20= 140 years. 1883 + 140 = 2023.
I also had chills at Elsa's death scene as she chose the spot, James cradled Elsa in his lap propped against a tree. I immediately flashed back to John Dutton cradling son, Lee, saying we'll just rest a bit until we figure a spot to bury him...it was near the headstones of Duttons past. Also, the thing with birds: Elsa's first memories of birds being so smart, hummingbird visiting Shea by the sea, a bird lighting in front of John and Lee with JD nodding his head "OK" and Beth calling that

I have to say, her narration has been unbearable. My family has called Tennessee home for many generations, and while I understand that the actor who plays her character is from California, her accent is truly terrible. She tries way too hard pronouncing every single word and it’s all over the place. I’ve tried hard to ignore it but it’s really painful to listen to lol

The final episode of 1883 was poetic to say the least. It was inspiring, knowledgeable and filled with passionate. When I think of Elsa I think of passionate because that's how she lived her life. For narration of the show proved that she was indeed a passionate and perceptive young woman On the Western trail, what she had to work with, and what she had available to her and whom she had available, I can just see inside her heart and it reminds me of my own life lived with passion. Although misguided at times. I love the scene where she rode off with Sam at the end of the episode. And he was so humble, honorable, and loyal. Through life and even through death, although he did not know, when two people get married they become one flesh.
Birds have been believed to be the returning spirits/souls in a lot of cultures including some European ones. We had a family of Cardinals nest in our back yard after my Mom died. My daughter would say that Grandma came by every time she saw the momma Cardinal. With that in mind, I almost fell over when the hummingbird showed up in front of Shea. and it was like he recognized that too, because he almost smiles. And then looks content. That was a jaw dropping scene for me.
By 10 minutes in, I was already accepting Elsa's death. But it really "got dusty" when Lissa dies. I don't know why, but that one really bothered me too.

Not gonna lie, it broke my heart when she called her father a liar for saying that she was not gonna die, I keep forgetting that she's just a kid in a woman's body, how her voice breaks like a child's...
Actually felt that Elsa was dead the entire time and telling the story from beyond through her narrations, which were equally ghostly as the one at the end of the closing episode. Otherwise it wouldn't have made sense to show her shot with the arrow in the very first episode. It makes sense to tell a story set it in the past, as the past. Anyone else interested in a spinoff with Sam's life?

I was like "Jeez someone get this girl a pen and paper or something for this poetry" but I was still shocked when she died. Until the end that is and I was like "OH okay I see where they're going with this".
It explained a lot of things namely why they stopped in Montana vs. Oregon which 1883 establishes is their mission from Episode 1. It also explains the Dutton tradition of burying their loved ones close by, like REALLY close on the ranch. And then by the time I found out Season 2 takes place in 1932 which is... I don't know you do the math number of years later, why we'll probably never see the characters from 1883 ever again.
I love that they did it in a single season. But I was one of those people rolling their eyes on the episode Ennis died like "Surely he'll get revived by the end of the ep... oh shit nevermind".
But in HER case I was like "There is no way they're gonna kill her off she's too important, she is THE MAIN CHARACTER." which for 1883 she was. But I love that I had that position on it because that made her death hurt more, the legions of people whining and crying about it in the comments (both good crying and bad) and how some are even swearing the series off going forward is a testament to how well they did it.
Nobody wants to see a loved one die. Nobody. Whether you know them personally or not. But to act like she could take a lethal shot with poison caked all over it nonetheless and somehow swing back around and be up in time for Season 2 is just disingenuous and it's not realistic. It's a wonder she didn't die of a number of different other ways honestly but that one if they gave her plot armor for that people would be complaining about that, too.
I kind of knew based on the opening sequence from Episode 1 that she was going to die. It wasn't until Episode 9 when she got shot and that whole thing happened that I realized "Oh this is happening THIS season and sooner than I expected".
@@sweetjrewing5435 I also could have done with less narration, some of which struck me as trying too hard to be impressively insightful. Also, too many lingering shots of Elsa's pretty, pretty face. This was a great saga, nonetheless. Elsa was a great character, so were Thomas, Ennis, Margaret and John. Still, nothing compares with Lonesome Dove for me. Woodrow Call and Augustus McCrae were two of the most interesting characters ever written, and Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall made them unforgettable.

It's poetic, sad lined with beautiful. The story doesn't go the way you want it to, but it knows it and immerses itself with the reality that life doesn't always either, but when you finish the last episode you wouldn't have it any other way.
And everybody reading this will be dead soon enough. We want to ignore how death is integral to life.

And we don't regret living our lives even when we look back on the tough times. The beauty in life, even when there are only a precious few positive memories, makes the journey worth the pain.

Her being shown getting shot in ep.1 had to be for a reason.. then her continuing to tell her story after her death drew me to the conclusion that she had been telling her story from the afterlife all along..

What suprised me most? the fact that my husband had to come and comfort me paniking that something was wrong because I was actually BAWLING my eyes out at Elsa's passing. What a fanatistic ride. Great Summary. It is important to note that ELSA's meeting up with SAM was 1 year after her death in the scene, maybe SAM was already dead and was waiting for her arrival. Note this takes us back to scene from Yellowstone when they burnt the body of the guys who tried to rape the native girl and what Monica's Grandfather said they were destined to live in the afterlife forever... question is, where is the arrow...??
i felt i was losing my brother because of illness, after four days because I'm not in the mainland... i talked to my brother and it seems he is going to be good which i still don't know. i watch the last episode of 1883 and man i lost it.... the last episode made me cry like i haven't since my teens! i recorded it and saw myself once and it made me ball in tears again. thank you for making something to let me get rid of these emotions of lost

I really wanted a reunion with Elsa and Ennis riding off together. It would have made more sense and been so touching. Although I can also see how Elsa has evolved since Ennis died so maybe meeting up with Sam is where her mind would take her. It's just that Ennis would be someone she can reunite with in death.
@Jane Maybe but if we're thinking about it that way I would think Sam would reunite with his other wife who he probably had a longer and more significant life connection with. Ennis died right at the peak of his love for Elsa who was his first love so I'd imagine his heaven would be wanting to reunite with her. A little bit like how in Titanic Rose meets up with Jack when she dies, bugger the husband and children she had spent the entire rest of her life with haha I know Elsa didn't spend much time with either of her loves, and time spent doesn't necessarily equate to depth of relationship, but I still feel like she and Ennis shared something unique in being each other's first loves and if he hadn't died I doubt she would have looked twice at Sam. Ennis died believing they would marry and his last words were that he loved her, whereas I don't feel as though the relationship meant the same to Sam for that to be his spiritual ending. However, if we're looking at it from the perspective of it being Elsa's choice or her mind creating that I can see why Sam is the one but still wish it had been Ennis she reunited with in death.

I can’t believe how a show could rip my guts out like episode 10 did for me. All I can think is how can I miss a well played character more than my family members who have passed on. I hope there are many flashbacks of Elsa in the upcoming episodes.

Yellowstone comes from the yellow rocks in the river? And in the area. The water is extremely clear in Montana - except where ppl n boats rafts go in n out of the waters.
Buy if you ever get up there? Look at the lakes and rivers. Theres light blue-green rocks, dark red rocks and the yellow rocks all over. The yellow ones are mostly chert. Which is very hard n soft to the touch. Its so visible in the yellowstone river? That you instantly understand how it came to its name.
And that's the why to yellow stone - 'cause there's just a whole bunch of yellow rocks all over.

I also felt like I had a loss of a loved one, it was especially bad for me seeing as I just lost my sweet Momma and my beautiful sister! That is GREAT writing indeed! You also know it’s great writing when you have to remind yourself that it is just a show, in which I’ve had to do more than once on my Yellowstone and 1883 journey! All in all although I don’t want it all to end, I will be OK with it! Taylor Sheridan, will always keep me wanting more!! Oh and Mayor of Kingstown???

I do think Sam was waiting for her, that's why the horizon was empty and then she was there. The whole show was so well done, amazing acting. It was definitely difficult to remember that they were fictional

You got it wrong, John saying all the Dutton buried on the Yellowstone means he meant James. Who was probably killed and his wife asked his brother to come to Yellowstone that's the story of 1923. And the 7th generation Dutton is Tate who is 1/2 Indian.
I thought maybe Elsa's child would introduce native blood into the Dutton gene pool which would've made for a great story line, but no matter, Casey's son is native and when he inherits the ranch, that prophecy will have been fulfilled.
Over the years I've seen some really good and a few great shows and movies. But there are only very few that captured me like Yellowstone and 1883. Especially in 1883 I felt so connected to the characters and the ending was really hard to watch - I pretty much denied to accept it until the end credits rolled. Even the day after I still thought about that episode and the show itself made me thinking for more than a few days.
From my point of view Taylor and his team have created an exceptional world here and also the actors have done an amazing job. I can't wait for Season 5 and new episodes of 1883.
I didn't believe she was going to die in the end but at the same time it makes sense the way they did it. They decided wherever she died was where she'd be buried and that was where they'd settle so she would never be far away from them. It ties in beautifully with what we found out early on in Yellowstone that many, many generations (I think it was seven) Duttons were all buried there when they died and I had forgotten about that until more recently. She was the first one. It also explains why they were originally traveling to Oregon but decided to stop in Montana. It was because of her death. I thought it was kind of ballsy to start the entire series out by showing her getting shot, making me wonder if and when that would ever get revisited and if not was it a dream or something? I had nearly forgotten about it until it happened again later on in the show on Episode 9. Tragic that it all happened based on a misunderstanding, but if they had somehow re-written the entire thing to show some miraculous recovery the show would've lost points in my mind. Some people say this episode and her death ruined the entire thing for them and I am just like ... this is one of the most beautiful and powerful moments I've ever seen in any TV show. Bar none. If not the best.

I am surprised you did not mention the similarities between Elsa's death and when John Dutton (Kevin Costner) sits under the tree holding Lee after he dies. Watch the two scenes again, they are pretty similar with references to looking for a spot and the significance of the bird. Also, who do you think the humming bird that visited Shea on the beach was supposed to be? Elsa said she would meet him there.

I’m pretty convinced that Elsa started the Dutton family curse. Every first born Dutton that we know of has died (James sacrifice for the land). We saw johns flashback with him talking to his passing father and his dad says he misses his wife and then adds “and your (johns) brother god dammit” and lee, which was Johns first born so we know of at least 3 generations of firstborn duttons dying. I worry for young Tate and his future of the Dutton ranch

I think the most poetic ending of Yellowstone is for John and Casey to make Tate the official owner and inheritor. This brings the Yellowstone land back to the tribe, and it also gets rid of federal tax issues and private investment harassment. Been saying this since season 1.

1883 left me starving for more. I have never been so crushed knowing that there wouldn't be any more episodes since Friends ended. Yeah yeah, there will be 1932 but I feel like that will be like trying to watch the Friends spinoff Joey.
Just incredible writing and acting. Taylor Sheridan is probably the best writer, actor, producer and director. I felt that I was on the journey the entire time.

I'm with you here. I think Billy Dukes is wrong. Like you, I believed James Dutton is Costner's great grandfather, so his generational count is way off.

I will miss this show, alot until it returns and also these recaps. What a ride! I guess that Elsas death had to be in order for the family to defend the ranch with such fervour. It was acquired by great family sacrifice.
One thing that I missed was that Elsa didn't ask for James to get word back to Sam. It's sad to think of him waiting and wondering.

I agree - I felt like the Sam and Elsa’s story got cut off - I felt like they really loved each other - maybe it will get addressed in the next season - I hate feeling like something is left unsaid - same as on Yellowstone they didn't show Rip not finding Beth after she got blown up etc
@@melodykennedy6592 I doubt there will be a second season, there's really no need for it. The story will continue on in 1932. I'm sure we will see some of the cast from 1883 in flashbacks on both 1932 and Yellowstone.
When it returns so many of the good actors are gone. The people who made it so interesting are gone.

I have been a huge fan of Graham Greene since the early 70’s when I saw him as a young man in a TV program called, I think, “The Last of His Tribe”, or something to that effect. He is absolutely one of the best actors in every production in which he has appeared. So, here I am…Graham Greene and I are both close to 50 years older and, I am still admiring this man’s acting skills. Amazing. I don’t know what will happen in “1932” but I will be there, God willing and the creeks don’t rise, to watch it along with Season 5 of Yellowstone. I don’t remember this country being this excited to watch a wonderful what they used to refer to as a “mini-series” since “Roots”. And as far as I am concerned, Taylor Sheridan is genius pure and simple….when Shay is sitting on the beach talking to his dead wife and that tiny hummingbird hovers in front of his face… each studying the other…oh, my God, that gave me such chills. I already have Seasons 1, 2, and 3 and will soon have Season 4 so I can rewatch it anytime I want…but I have not been able to find a dvd of 1883 and that upsets me greatly. I hope it just is not out yet.
graham greene is great in everything he's done...particularly in 'clear cut'...what a performance...

Sheridan may not have made a faux pas with the John Dutton comment. Elsa may have been the only person buried at that particular spot and later there was a family burial plot that was closer to where John’s house would eventually be built.
It had to do with the bird...both Elsa's and Lee's deaths had a songbird pick out their spots, under a tree with both their Dads holding them....
I started thinking that the Tree James and Elsa rested against was the same one we see in Yellowstone, but realised that the time difference would make that unlikely. Having said that, I don't know what sort of tree it was, and how long they live and how big they grow.
It wasn't a faux pas- everyone since 1886 was buried behind John Duttons house- but NOT Elsa. Because Elsa died in 1883- 3 years before!

Since she'd declared herself a grown woman, who else thought Elsa ought to have decided to stay with Sam, and let her family go on w/o her, and Sam ought to have called on her to stay with him where her true place was? In such perilous times, how could these newlyweds face a whole year apart, how would Elsa make it back to Sam?
Honestly if she had just been wearing her indian dress they would have never attacked her. Her momma made her wear that dress and when she gave in she surrendered her will and died because of it.

@@joannaashlock3276 Blame? Nobody's to blame. The whole saga was about choices, most well intentioned, many of which were wrong in retrospect. If the men had stayed with the women instead of going after the bandits that killed the Indian women, maybe they could have protected them, explained to the Indians. Everyone was making decisions on the fly. Margaret was trying to protect Elsa from the men at the fort, so insisted she put on a dress. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Yellowstone has been my favorite series and look forward to watching more episodes of the Dutton Family. However, 1883 was an outstanding series! I loved every episode, every character, the gorgeous scenery, and Taylor Sheridan’s writing. I cried for a day after the last episode. It was done in such a beautiful manner.
It is poetic that she dies in yellowstone, out in the middle of no where because she wanted to be free since episode one.
I thought Elsa’s death scene was identical to how John Dutton held Lee Dutton as he died. Next to a tree and watching the birds in a wooded area.
Rainwater knows the Duttons. Not just the current ones. He knows them all. He is both a security layer but also an ominous representation, but a friend to them, because his taught history and people are spiritually intertwined with the Duttons. The chief they asked John for permission to bury was Spotted eagle. His son honored his father. Just as John did Elsa in her death. She is now, in a sense, the protector spirit that guides all their lives. The perils that befell her, befalls them, but the balance is kept by the willpower drawn from Lightning with yellow hair. The prophecy I expect will be addressed in the next seasons of Yellowstone. Q'rianka Kilcher will probably make a full return at some point, as the tribe's lawyer/fixer and most ruthless force against Dutton's legal enemies.

I never did get into Yellowstone much but I do love this show, 1883. That said, I did watch enough to know that Kayce has a son. If you count correctly from James, not including him, and since Kayce's son is Half N.A., it would be cool to see this is how the Crow people get their land back, by this relative of the tribe and Dutton family. It would be even cooler if they could find that his son is related to Spotted Eagle by what ever number Great Grandfather that would be. Just a thought.

Same here! I watched 1883 before Yellowstone and I love the substance that 1883 offered. Yellowstone is good but it’s a huge mess and reminds me of a cowboy version of Sons of Anarchy.

I agree, Yellowstone is good just too much nonsensical drama. I've known ranchers, they are tough as leather but a murder and npcs with cowboy hats on willing to die and murder ever few episodes is ridiculous. And Beth... please. Her and rip both are drawn in to turn on the women and make all the girl fans and a few men, happy. Their characters both exaggerate what I'm talking about. I know everyone here is going to beat the hell out of me for this comment. Sorry, I'm a guy who demands decent writing and have ripped apart shows i DO follow when they drop the ball.

anyone that thinks life is rough or racism is a major problem in 2022 needs to watch 1883. That was when life was rough. The Season finale was brutally sad. Great Show, great acting, Taylor Sheridan is on fire .
seems odd to see "fort Casper" and hearing CY Ranch that is now under Alcova. Being a Casperite just seems weird to see the wrong mountian behind it. but I am still happy to know my hometown made a TV show!
Casey is not the seventh generation child, his son is. The five year old is Kevin Costner’s dad’s grandfather, not great grandfather.
Five year old John from ‘1883’ is John Dutton’s grandfather. He is the father of John’s father that was shown as a 90 year old man dying on ‘Yellowstone’. James and Margaret Dutton from ‘1883’ are the great grandparents to John Dutton from ‘Yellowstone’.

Not that I know what the American west in 1883 was like, but it was very convincing for me. The last season of Yellowstone was poor compared to other seasons, but watching 1883 gives me hope that Tyler Sheridan can write a brilliant series and has the capacity to improve the next season of Yellowstone. i was surprised by the lack of proper goodbye between Elsa and her mother. It was known to both that they would not see each other again when Elsa and John left. Just seemed a little strange.
Times were different back then. Death was common on any day as a birth..or just getting through any day....they were both very tough women, and knew each other so well, words were just a mere imposition...they both knew their destinies at their goodbye...
If I were the mother I would have also taken the boy on horseback and gone with Elsa and John while Shea followed with the wagon. Dang, it was only 2 days more on a horse vs in a wagon.
They had their goodbye when Elsa said, see you in the Valley.

The simple answer going through my mind is that Elsa is buried beyond 300 yards but a family cemetery was started within 300 yards in 1886. I didn’t think of it as a plot hole.

I thought she was going to be buried at "The Rock", where Johns father died....and at some point someone is gonna search up there and find Johns wedding ring, likely only to bury it with John though.

@@lthunt6613 Mmm...6 months on the trail and 2 and a half years to build a cabin. It's possible. But don't forget the big house in Yellowstone isn't the same cabin that James built. Same location? Don't know. There are a number of possibilities. Sheridan wrote the wrong year in the script (typo), Costner read the wrong year in the script, Elsa is buried at a different location prior to the family graveyard being established, Elsa was moved (doubtful) the big house was only constructed on that site in 1886 but I think we have flogged this dead horse enough. Unless Sheridan can clarify.
As for the 1886 reference, it is highly possible that Miss Elsa's grave was moved to the current location of 300 yards from John's back porch.
Gravesites have been known to be moved so it's just a thought to consider. Who knows, we might get an explanation in 1932?

I loved that this was wrapped up in one season. I hate having to wait a year or more for new seasons. Only part I didn't agree with is shea's suicide, but you could see it coming from the beginning, his family meant everything to him.

It actually said the Dutton story would continue this fall. That could be "Yellowstone" or "1932". Sheridan said in a "Variety " interview that he was done looking at this specific period in time.

Rarely do I feel so gutted from drama of any kind. I'm glad this was a limited series. It's too much. Fucking thing hit far too many nerves.
I love 1883. It just might be better than Yellowstone. I really hope Elsa lives. She makes the show. She’s a very good actress.
I know that this is a story, tho living back in those days was simular. It hit me watching it yesterday that while this was happening out west, back here in PA our house was being built. And to think of how many people lived here thru the years. How many made that trip west. Love History!!

I really wish they had stretched these characters out into many seasons, including Elsa, instead of only one!! Ugh!! I’ve tried to watch Yellowstone 3 times, and just cannot get into it, but 1883 is an absolute masterpiece, which I’ve already watched the entire season 5 times!! It’s sooo good! This would have been so much bigger than Yellowstone, if it had been given the chance, because 1883 has what it takes to keep people glued to the screen!! 👀
Well if Sheridan keeps to his ways, and reuses actors , I can see Jeremy renor staring and leading 1932 as John Duton
I can’t help but think of the yellow bird that James and Elsa watch while under the tree, the dove that is watched by John as he holds Lee under the tree, and lastly the hummingbird on the beach…
The Dutton family tree circulating online shows young John fro 1883 (John Dutton Sr born 1878), John Jr. (Costner's Dad) born 1910, and John Dutton (Yellowstone) born 1955. I don't believe that tree to be set in stone, and also shows John (Costner) not being born until his father was 45.
I do believe that little John in 1883 is Kevin Costner's character's grandfather. so james dutton is the great grandfather.
1955 would make sense as Costner was born in 1955 same age as John.
I hope 1932 explores Graham Greens character’s family line , it’s all so interesting! Can’t wait for the next part of the story!
