Fond memories of my time at Quarles. 1958-1963. I remember my first day at 'Big School' and my first encounter with GW (George) Laws. A inspirational talk to the new boys at assembly. A shame to see the old school in such a state.
Mr Norris was wonderful, i had him at Albany School, a lovely man. I also went to Quarles in 90 s, pre services course. PT Brooks was a beast, a good one. I got expelled for foing donunts in the snow covered rear car park. Good times
Fascinating and full of memories, '58 to '64. Sad to hear it's about to be demolished. The dedicated teachers there and the education they gave us has lasted our lifetimes, and given us our livings. Thanks for posting this video.
Very well done and the sort of journey that would bring back so many memories.I attended Triptons secondary school in Wood Lane, Dagenham between 1963 until 1968. Just 30 out of about 90 boys in each year stayed on until 5th year to do GCSE’s as most started working after the age of 15 in all number of trades and apprenticeship programs available at that time. It’s now Robert Clack comprehensive and probably far busier than ever. We also had two Welsh sports teachers. Mr Jones and Mr Morgan, who were both very good. In fact very few of the teachers were unpleasant at all so far as I recall.

Trying to list all the teachers I remember...Mr Just/Mr Evans/Mr Jones/Mr & Mrs Court/Miss Watson/Mr Jefferies/Mr Tomlinson/Mr Argent/Mr Sinett/Mrs Wright/Mr Mclaren/Mr Laws/Mrs Stuart/Mr Fletcher/Mr Norris/Mr Rubery/Mr Lipman/Mr Leeson and an art teacher who later went into politics I think. I know there are more that I cannot remember. My brother Bobby was the caretaker for the college for a time and had a supplied house on Tring Gardens. Kicking my self now that I never asked him to let me have a look around while not open to students.
I was there too, at the same time. Mr Heffernan taught metal work, Mr Collier physics and Mr Terry Hurlstone art. The latter was a keen Liberal supporter. Mr Tomlinson taught maths. He was ex Fleet Air arm and was always keen to talk about the war if a tv programme had been on the box. He put some of us through o level maths early when the exam board changed the syllabus. I understand he was killed, shortly after I left the school, having been hit by a lorry whilst crossing the Colchester road
Over the last few weeks the Quarles Campus has started to be demolished for housing. Thank you for your feedback Delano, pleased you enjoyed your time at Quarles.
Thanks for putting this up fellas. Brilliant. I was there from 1964-68. In 1966 we re-enacted the Battle Of Hastings in the lower court yard with an audience of parents on the grass bank and upper yard.
Thanks John. The memories on the Video were totally spontaneous and to be honest I could have added plenty more. It’s funny how the moment brought those particular memories to me and also bringing back my Cockney accent once again which I thought I had largely lost over subsequent years. I guess you can take the guy out of Harold H but not Harold H out of the guy lol.
The classroom on the ground floor right (you knew as Mr Litmans, was my form class for 2 years, I started in 1975, it had become the Quarles campus of Neave then, and boys and girls were now mixed, Mr Scammell was my form teacher (another Welshman who I am still friends with on facebook) I remember making mint creams in the domestic science block, and eating most of them on the way home. The gate at the top of the sportsfield lead into a part of the Manor we used to call the death track, our cross country runs would go around it. thanks for this, brings back so many memories.
I was there the same year as Ivan brought back some great memories as I done my first year there before moving to the what was called neave in our days how I would have been different life if I knew now what I should have known then but great memories from my one year in the building
@@nikdb64 . Neave school was formerly Harrowfields in my day and rivalry between the two schools was well known. Great irony they became one school. You are lucky in a way to have experienced both schools and glad you have some great memories of your one year at Quarles.
Thanks Peter & Peter for putting this together, I wasn't aware of the imminent demise of my old secondary school (I was at Quarles 1961 - 68). Thanks for reminding me of the names of some off my teachers, I guess the one who said he liked geography did so because John Court was a class teacher, in fact we had some fantastic teachers, I owe them big time. I remember rugby with the Welsh teachers & the way they ribbed us mid 60s when Wales were thrashing England most years.
Great video and as been said, brought back great memories. Pete Adams was year above me. Am still in touch with Derek Evans (TD) and Bob Norris (music) teachers. I remember in junior school going up to Quarles to watch the battle of hasting re-enactments. Petes comment about George laws appearing at Mclarens door was great as I remember that plus all the other prefect stuff....and keep to the left! Well done guys for doing this
In this world of online streaming I had forgotten all about the DVD. I guess it’s use is declining, however to have a physical keepsake of a piece of history sounds a great idea Lawrence. I was there until it merged with Harrowfields and became Neave Comprehensive. I left in 1974. Mr Laws was headmaster until the merger than it was then A Mrs Quinn. For biology I had Mr Jones (think his nickname was Piggie) Physics Mr Leeson (Peanut) Mr Evans for TD. Mr Norris (Nosher) for music, think it was Mr Lintern for metalwork. Can't remember the geography teacher who for two years taught us about glaciers and the o level was about deserts.
Thank you for your response Gerry. The metalwork teacher was Mr Lindley I believe and the other Mr Hethenan. My Geography teachers were Mr Fletcher and Mr Court.
My dad attended in the early 60s I believe. He lost contact with his brother who also attended Timothy Charles Smith. Would anyone recall the family or Timothy?
Actually I vaguely remember a Tim Smith in my year at Quarles, I am 68 years now but did not know him that well. If you wish to reach a much wider audience with your enquiry I strongly recommend that you join the Facebook group called “Harold Hill RM3 (memories of yesterday)”.
I maintained the BT telephone system there ( 2005-). Also worked in the Duckwood pub as a teenager. Now also demolished). Lived in Priory Grove.

I used to go college here,started Sep 2010,left June 2011, made some good friends,met good people there,but Ardleigh Green was much bigger for me

Totally unrecognisable now I was at quarles from 62 to 67, had to leave early due to heat problems still going in 2023
