- My favorite clip from my favorite musical of all time... don't even talk of remakes. Here Robert Preston, as con man par excellence "Professor Harold Hill" plays on the fears of naive and righteous midwestern Americans in order to line his own pockets... simply brilliant. It reminds me of the song and dance certain elected officials have been doing in order to get you to support their wars and stealing your liberties. :)
I appreciate your 'about' summary - what this movie reminds you of ; ME TOO!
for my money, the single best scene ever in the movies. and preston as harold hill, the single more iconic performance
He assesses the customer’s current state.
He defines the problem.
He defines the solution.
He appeals to the buyer’s emotions.
He believes in his product.
The perfect pitch! :)
This is, well, really swell!
some stuff just funny though
I did this in my high school speech contest in1964 as a sophomore and won. I listened to the album in my parents basement a 1000 times till I had it memorized. Can't remember to stop at the grocery on the way home, but can still remember most of this. Great spiel! Too bad most people don't know a lot of the references. Love it.
Sen sen- Ha
I think that this scene was the inspiration for the scene in the simpsons where hutz pitches the monorail to the people in city hall.
A perfect example of the slippery slope fallacy.
I love how a "down home" film like The Music Man is about a con-man. An American classic!
Preston's performance is amazing!
Professor Harold Hill is a agent of chaos
Jay Butler He is.
goose
Reminds me of Rush Limbaugh. He sounds good, but full of half truths and exaggeration all designed to increase the change in his pocket.
The Best.....don't write them like this anymore...AND Robert Preston was amazing.
This is one of the all time great production numbers from my all time favorite musical. The Music Man may not be the "best" musical (to me, at least, that distinction belongs to West Side Story), but it is far and away my favorite. Forget about that Disney travesty. I don't know how many times I've seen it (and I was even in a dinner theater production of it) it just never gets old. Preston was the best Harold Hill of the ones I've seen. Don't get me started on Matthew Broderick.
The marvelous Mrs maisel. ep 5 brought me here
Me too!
We have a problem here in River City. I took guitar lessons when I was 3 years old until age 16 playing in a band. Wanting to play classical guitar...But my mother said your guitar playing is pitiful. So I moved to Los Angelos, and have become homeless.
Are you okay? Hope you have a home.
Stupendium anyone?
Great classic! Just for fun, try it with the CC on. Poor thing gets lost almost immediately. :D
It's rather hilarious!
sad to say youtube's fixed it :(
He was a stand out in every role but in Victor Victoria he was beyond awesome, he worked the funny lines with the beat built in like it was a sit com. And his "Gay Paris" made me shoot my drink out my nose first time I heard it. He was a gem.
Totally brilliant performance by Robert Preston. Perfect timing with wonderful lyrics!
Just LOVE this guy! He could play anything….
…like an alien trying to find a star fighter in order to save their civilization!
Grace and frankie brought me here ha
Rap music in 1962.
I laughed so hard when he said "Words like...like SWELL!"
@Largo64 That preview was shown about six months before the movie was released. I never saw a movie audience react like that to a film before, or since. I can't imagine a better cast. Certainly the Disney version was not even close.
My favorite musical is The Music Man. I have watched this many times, and enjoyed it every time. It's just a pleasure! This version, too is waaay better than the Disney remake a few years ago. I saw this the first time in a preview at the Crown Theater in Pasadena, CA. Nobody knew what to expect. When the snare drum riff started there was a reaction in the audience. When Meredith Willson's name flashed on the screen the people cheered. They clapped after every scene, as if the actors could hear.
Never seen pool just billiards.
Monorail! Monorail! Monorail! Monorail!
Langley High...senior...spring Musical 1975...Harold and I were ...well....SWELL!! Standing O's all three nights!! never thought I could learn that whole schpeel...but I did...and loved it....
Is there a video of it?
Not to my knowledge Larry, but thanks for the thought!
Real Rap that is SO Much better than what we have today,
@howdoiquityou2006 You mean Obama. "We got trouble, right here in the constitution, with a capital T and that rhymes with C and that stands for Change."

This was Harold Hill in his Republican phase, when he was running for office. Fellow sure knew how to cause a moral panic.

Alright, where's the Halo fans that ended up here?
Nobody knows this is the reference from which the Flim Flam brothers were made
But I just wan't some god damn cider!
My father had this album we played over as kids
Thumbs up if the Flim Flam brothers tricked you into coming here.
Trouble with a Capitol T which rhymes with p which stands for pool
THITH PLAY ITH THO COOL ( talking like winthrop with a lithp).
This is hands down one of the best musicals ever written.
Sounds like every talking head on Fox News to me.
If he were in drag, I'd think it was Glenn Beck....
Im only here because of the Flim Flam Brothers...

I just saw that MLP episode about con-men with apple cider. Hill's song reminds me of their song near the beginning.
Ctrooper2011 its what the flim flam brothers song was roughly based off of
just realized this was a 3 yr old comment
This reminds me of the super cider speedy 6000
That's because this is that it's based on.
I thought so
Gay
my church is doing a production of MM. I am in it. i am playing the train conductor and i am the guy that takes the comic book out of the kid's back pocket and i am in the chorus
Well, it does have noise like that Rmoney guy, and his little dog, Ryan. But, being a movie, a musical at that, it's funny and fun!
Oh.....swell!
I wonder if this number was done in a single take.
+Vancoin The camera angles suggest it's probably impossible . You have shots from his back and front, tight and wide angles. If this was done in one take there would likely be opposite angle cameras and lighting getting in some of the shots.
I think they just took the best audio take and overlayed it on a shot edited from a few different takes.
There are way to many real life Music Men in this world. Leading people off like the Pied Piper.
Hmmm.
I'm reminded of some talk radio and TV "news" people.
I'll bet they all know this song by heart.
Anyway, this has to be one of the very best musicals ever made, and Robert Preston really nailed Professor Hill!
Where does this 3-D come from? Looks like you're perfecting it... But still... I am very impressed... Thank you. Very much. This is GREAT~~
and with my theater stature i played Harold hill in our High school musical of The music Man im going to make it far i hope.
Nannies are selling the smoking ban the very same way that Prof Hill sold the band uniforms!
Could have done a great version of a prosperity preacher.
I can't really draw the connection with the flim flam brothers and this song
anypony care to elaborate?
do you know of any place I can buy an original "remastered" version for my dad?
Daniel Ingram, why u so awesome?
I have nothing but love for the fat that there are no dislikes for this video.

Ponies sent me here, the uploader is like "wtf is with all these pony comments!?" xP
With a capital "T" and that rhymes with "C" and that stands for cider!
