    844 would be proud. She did the same thing over 500 miles westward a little under 27 years ago in 1996 on Archer Hill in Wyoming. As Steve Lee once said to that freight train stuck on Archer Hill, "What do you think they did before diesel?"

    • @TestECull
      @TestECull ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I wanna see 4014 soloing a stack train up Archer Hill. There was a clip taken in the 80s of her baby sister doing exactly that with 143 wells and it wasn't even struggling. It sounded HAPPY. Even gave a little toot toot to the camera as it passed by. I bet 4014 could do 200 wells just as easily, maybe 225.
      One of my all time favorite steam videos right there. I've always maintained steam locomotives were orders of magnitude better at pulling trains than diesels ever have been and only lost out to diesel because of the bean counters demanding ever-shrinking costs. 3985 pulling that stack train just backs up my point. 3985 does the work of four or five Co-Co diesels all on her own imagine what 4014 could do.....

    • @heuhen
      @heuhen ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TestECull that 143 train, was a light train meaning it wasn't loaded. most if not all the containers was empty, but they needed them moving and 3985 was going in that direction anyway, so it was a perfect PR opportunity.

    These Union Pacific Big Boy locomotives were made near the end of the steam locomotive era. These were the peak of size, power, and traction for steam locomotives. However since diesel electric locomotives were so much more economical it was inevitable that the steam era would come to an end. I suspect that these Big Boy Steam Locomotives had a lot of life still left in them when they were retired. I suspect that with proper maintenance these Big Boy Locomotives could have lasted into the early 1970s.

      @@pirates12343 yes. Two diesel electric locomotives each with approximately 200,000 lbf starting tractive effort and 4.400 HP. One loco died causing the train to stall. Adding Big Boy with it’s 135,000 lbf tractive effort and around 6,500 HP got it moving again. But the Big Boy would have stalled as well without the other diesel working.
      Giant HP numbers are not what get trains moving. Tractive Effort is. That’s why they stopped making Diesel Electric locomotives with 5,000+ HP. Because you can’t utilize it. Not enough axles.
