    “How did they learn Japanese 20 years ago?” I moved to Japan in 1998. Any kanji that you ever looked up you made a flash card for, end of story. Because it was such a pain in the ass to use a paper dictionary. And you memorized it. Studying was a group activity most of the time for new material, so different people could tackle/look up different words. Very few dictionaries had pitch accent in them…

      oh man learning new languages is orders of magnitude easier in 2022 lol this actually sounds impossible. i'm always blown away by people who managed to do this before electronic dictionaries and such took off.

    • @WeebJail
      @WeebJail  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      and if im talking to someone and i dont understand a word it's extremely trivial to just pull out a dictionary on my phone. kids these days is like kind of a meme but for learning languages it's actually a world apart lol

      @@WeebJail rather than think of it as impossible… think of it this way. You had to work so hard to get every word. So each word was worth so much more. More in time, so the higher value was more incentive to remember and memorize. This is also why studying was often a group affair. New words could be divided between us, along with grammar that we might not yet understand. Also I know that today many learners of Japanese do not learn how to write every kanji that they can read. Well we could not write 100% but it was a lot closer. I would say about 90%. The other change to Japanese learning is use of katakana. At that time there were very few loan words in comparison to now. In modern spoken Japanese this is the part that I have the most trouble with now.

    • @WeebJail
      @WeebJail  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      oh god you're right, fewer katakana words, that might even be worth the trade off. i keep saying katakana should be illegal every time i come across an egregious wall of katakana

    Haha, just found out about this video. You're 100% on point with your criticisms of Migaku. We're working on completely rebuilding everything rn. Literally everything you're pointing out will be fixed/added in the new version. We invite you to shit on it when it's out. We're going to be the best in this space baby! 😅

    Thanks! Now I know I'm not the only one who stopped using Migaku because it didn't support Wanikani. At the time I found it very frustrating to not being able to import my vocab list. I will probably give it another try eventually when they will implement it, but for now...

    Thank you for sharing those free (Japanese) language learning apps. I personally installed Language Learning with Netflix before I even watched Steins; Gate for the very first time.
    Speaking of criticism of the apps that you've mentioned, I used Rikaikun for Furigana and definitions for free long before I installed Language Learning, but now I can only read the Furigana with the same app because they removed the definitions without any warning.

    • @WeebJail

      10ten is the newer version of rikaikun i think, i was gonna talk about it in the video but yomichan basically does that but also does all the cool anki stuff so i left it out

    Lmao! Preach on, dude! I've spent 2 days trying to setup Migaku. 5 more days of my trial left and I made 5 cards! All of them with just the sentence on the front lol! I been trying to figure out how this shit works! Not tryna' go left and right to find the definitions & all that jazz man.. They have instructions on their site and I've read them all and follow directions great. But theres so much unanswered questions of mine that I just wont even bother asking the creators of Migaku. Wasted 48 hours of my busy life haha. The layout is lovely but man i'm not trying to pay further on to keep fiddling with it because.. LONG STORY SHORT MY BRAIN HURTS. THIS SITE NEEDS GUIDANCE! LMAO. wait i remember seeing this before, it had a bunch of older anime that probably wouldnt run into copyright issues. i cant imagine it being better than what i talked about here with yomichan and stuff, which is literally just a watch to study direct link that integrates right into anki, because the library is naturally super limited, but i will give it another look : D

    I use migaku and it works fine for me. Although sometime it is tedious when the word is shorter than it is supposed to be and you have to add it by hand. I wish they develop a feature to make this faster. Everything else works Excelent and is many times faster than any other method that i have used

    Hi! I've been learning English through immersion + anki and i'm creating 15-20 cards every day, the problem is that i take approximately 5 minutes to create a single card, that's roughly 1.5h just creating cards every day which I think is a lot. i think the main reason for this is because I'm a perfectionist and i really take my time when looking up words comparing between different dictionaries and trying to choose the best definition and sentence for me. So i kinda "study" the word making sure I understand it before adding it to Anki. (maybe that's the reason why my true retention rate is 99%). Do you think i should give mingaku a try? the only reason i'm thinking twice is because the 5 usd subscription is not that cheap for me

      From your comment I can tell you're not a beginner so it wouldn't take that much time tbh . I'm learning English as well and with Migaku it literally takes seconds to make a card, except for some weird idioms that I have to look up multiple times on different websites but remember that your goal shouldn't master words through the SRS but through immersion.

      @@nfrankiksa4596 I've been using migaku for about 1 month now and, indeed, it speeded up my cards creation time a lot. Btw, I've got some en-en dictionaries converted to the migaku's format and since I know the one that comes with migaku is not that good I thought you might want them, let me know if you need and I'll be happy to share!
