This is genuinely such an inspiring video. Despite not knowing you IRL, when I was seeing you handle the N1 JLPT and having natural conversations with people in VR, I found myself grinning ear to ear with second-hand pride. For the tremendous progress you've made so far, congratulations Liva! Though I doubt I'll be at the same level 3 years from now, I don't really mind because I now have definitive proof that learning Japanese can be as enjoyable as you want it to be, even if the results are slower because of it. In fact, I now find myself as indifferent as ever towards to the questions of "when will I be good", "am I losing out on efficiency", and "should I be better than I am by now", because I know that it will all come in time so long as stay consistent, so I can just kick back an enjoy what I'm doing with the methods I prefer using. @@ven1845 I didn’t start sentence mining until 9 months ago and even then I had to take 4 months to learn the most common 2k kanji. But after that it’s been about 3 months and it’s made learning words easier. I’m sitting at a comfy 4100 words after the core 2k deck and I can get through slice of life anime with no issues (it’s also my favorite genre despite it being more accessible for immersion lol). It’s enough for me to get through some jrpgs as well. I’m revisiting P5R since there’s a lot of common language used and it’s been a blast. Grammar has been somewhat of an issue but I’ve been taking more time to think about how certain pieces of grammar are working in a sentence. Overall id say I’m a solid N3. There are some things I can definitely work on though.

@@steven-xb7rf On one hand I have watched a couple of animes in Japanese, the first ones were a pain to get through but it does get easier. On the other hand I frequently forget some words and catch myself searching the definition of something I have "learnt" before. I also tried to play a VN, but after struggling for a few hours and mining a few words every sentence I just shelved it and will revisit it later. So I would like to think that I'm barely N4.

I started learning japanese because of your videos. I'm usually the kind of person to pick something up overenthusiastically and drop it after a week or two. However, i've been sticking with learning japanese for about 8 months now, which is huge for me and i honestly don't think about giving up anymore. I might not be as disciplined as i could be (on average i only learn like 30 minutes a day and quite inconsistent), but i'm having fun and i'm slowly progressing forward. I hope to be close to your current level once it's been 4 years for me
wow, you're so much like me. i wish i could be consistent with things i pick up and attempt to learn instead of dropping them after a week or two. though, we're on the same boat for japanese and we at least keep improving, so that's still a good thing i guess

2 Years later in my own Japanese studies I finally got to go to Japan, I can't wait to hear about your experience visiting it was amazing when we went in November. Not too cold, not too hot, perfect weather every day.
it's a very commendable effort but Duolingo isn't the best option for learning Japanese. I would suggest stuff like Todai for reading practice and Satori reader for both reading and listening. As for vocab i found 2 simple apps called Kanji Study and Japanese Vocabulary that help a bunch and go level by level. Personal preference though. I have not done sentence mining yet since I am simply not good enough but planning to next year in Summer.
I haven't watched a ton of your videos but you are one of the most motivating people I have watched. The reason I say this is that you are so incredibly down to earth and seemed as if you started your journey in a very relatable and tangible position. While there are mistakes one can make, sticking to something you can sustain is the way to go. I have my whole life to learn Japanese, rushing will only lead to burnout and severe opportunity cost from my other interests and responsibilities. It's been less than a year from when I started but even less with very structured learning, so I still got a ways to go. Thank you for being an example of someone who has seen success in a way that seems possible for others.
These progress videos have given me so much motivation to keep going, your passion and determination is contagious. Today marks 9 months for me, and I've got no plans to stop any time soon 😁
It's insane how much you've improved! You inspired me to learn Japanese myself and i've been going at it daily since the start of April, I have racked up almost 2k words on Anki! They have inspired me to take up learning Japanese and I'm currently on a 41 day anki streak while working a job selling christmas trees so i can afford the genki text books lmao. i've been practicing using mostly anki for about a year at this point (and watching your videos on this for even longer), and while i've definitely felt improvement during that time there have been many situations where i'd encounter a word (or even many) in something i was watching or reading that i just completely didn't understand. i've wanted to avoid spending money on my learning as much as possible as i wasn't really sure how far i would be willing to go, but seeing how well you were able to manage yourself in those conversations on vrchat reminded me of why i started in the first place: to simply be able to talk to people from another culture that live vastly different lives from me. later this month i think i'll purchase a year of migaku and start using a more consistent schedule for studying. thanks for making these, they've done lots to help me keep motivated. pardon me writing way too much here.

I am not learning japanese but I am learning korean and I am currently on my 600ish day of anki, I am always really happy to see your progress videos as they make me excited for my own futur progress and also prove that hard word and consistency are key! I also have been using Migaku for a while and it surely is a game changer, last year because of my studies I couldn't do more than 8-9 new words a day because it took too long to mine, now with Migaku I am at 15 new words a day and it's really comfortable. Can't wait to see what the future hold and to see your 5 years update video!

I have an issue where I struggle to commit to hobbies that aren't monetizable or directly applicable to future success. I've always wanted to learn a second language, but I'm always falling off because I'll start to feel like I'm wasting my time at some point (I can't see a second language being of any use down the line, other than for my own enjoyment). Hearing that you've considered whether it's worth it or not and still committed to 4 years of effort without regret has got me thinking about this all again. I think I'm going to give it another shot, anyways great video and thanks for rekindling my interest haha

16 months into Anki mining. I have to say I'm surprised how much of VR Chat segment I understood without English subtitles. While I couldn't understand anything in certain topics the others were eazy. In 35 day I'm also also finishing my first Anki deck (Currently doing 6 words a day so I know exactly when I finish it). After that I'm starting 2k/6k deck and Grammer practice. Even though I'm doing only 20-30 minutes a day of words mining I still notice huge improvements. Seeing your videos is super motivating because I know what to expect after another and another year. I was also wondering about Linux update video. Well nice you included explanation in that for. Hope one day you can try to switch again and find yourself never wanting to go back anymore. Maybe that day I will also be able to write similar comment entirely in Japanese. とりあえず一緒に頑張るぞ

By the time your on 20k I'll have completed the 2k/6k deck, congrats man you really dumbed down the process for me and made me stick to it because you made it so simple. Seeing your progress skyrocket after the 6k deck is really motivating and I'm grateful that you kinda showed us the light at the end of the tunnel before we even made it to the end of the tunnel. Thanks for making another milestone update. The past two months, I've been slowing down with my studies thanks to being busy and just feeling burnt out. As a result, I've put in a lot less time than I used to into immersion, reviews, etc. It's been pretty disheartening to have to slow down so much, especially since I've been at it for 2 years now and wanted to start working more on output. Just last night, I started thinking about trying to put more time into it again. Seeing your video today just further cemented my motivation to dedicate more time to my studies and immersion. It's amazing how motivating it can be to see your progress, especially knowing that with time I can get where you are at. Here's to another year of Japanese, and whatever may come with it!
Glad I wasn't the only one sending web traffic to some random guys abandoned blog from 2007 lol. Great video as always! It's a nice check-in every now and then since I've also been at it for multiple years now. I figured I'd attempt N1 in December since there's a test really close to where I live. I never really studied for it either just immersed and did Anki etc. I thought I'd give it a shot for the experience or bragging rights. I'll have to find someone to brag to if I do pass.
Another superb video! It's great to see so much improvement in just a year since it is really inspiring. Currently on day 470 of studying Korean in the same way you started learning Japanese. I'm on track to finish the Duolingo course (thank god) in about two months and I look forward to learning more with immersion while also continuing to add more cards to my Anki decks. Don't know if you have heard but Duolingo has had a major update and to say that it is unpopular is an understatement and I can't say that I like it either. Congratulations on your milestone! I remember being very inspired by that duolingo video around when I was first start. I'm coming up on 2 years myself, and it was super exciting to realize that a lot of the random anki cards you were showing I've seen before. Also It's super interesting to me that you haven't really made reading a focus in your studies, and that it's all working out in the end. Maybe the negative aspects just doesn't come through in the video, but I admire that you pushing back against some of the despairs of language learning. For me I to this day still get a lot of thoughts of "I'm not working hard enough" or "Why am I not better at this after so much work" etc. It's something a lot of people need to work on I think in the community. Every time I watch one your videos it inspires me to focus on the real reasons I'm doing this, and to keep the pace that works for me.

Damn, i've been looking forward to watching this video the whole day. After watching your 600 days of duolingo video i decided "screw it" and installed anki. Little did i know it was going to become quite literally a drug (having madr me wake up multiple times in the middle of the night after forgetting to finish it). Yet here i am at 535 consecutive days of anki, never having been happier. Learning japanese, is quite a nice use of my time since i can fuel my need to slack off while still doing something productive. Watching this video also made me realise i also started really trying to optimize every second of my times something i doubt i'd've done too soon otherwise, especially without having something daily to branch being productive off of. I started learning Japanese around the time of your Duolingo video and each video you released caused me to challenge myself a bit harder making me a better learner. I have learned a lot now over these past few years. I've had amazing experiences on vr chat talking with Japanese natives although I'm probably around n5-n4 ish I've still had fun actually understanding somewhat and being able to communicate. I'm looking forward to when I can get to that 99.9 percent comprehension so I can have long conversations like you had! Thanks for the videos again. Can't wait for the next update!!
It's been awesome being able to follow your journey of learning Japanese, and i'm glad TH-cam one day recommended me your first 600 day video way back when. Being on and off again for years, and a fair way into Core2k/6k and discovering your own journey has been inspiring and i'm sure i'm not the only one who really felt affirmed by watching your progress for a while now. Currently despite getting towards the entire of my uni degree i'm at 96% of Core6k with not enough sentence mining, but still, the progress is visible and hopefully we'll all make it to the point we want to be. I'm listening to your Japanese output and it's mind blowing how good you sound. I saw your previous videos a while back so I'm not positive but I really think your accent got a lot better too. I consider myself pretty fluent in Japanese with my N2 level. I left Japan about the time you started learning Japanese and I'm a little embarassed to think that you passed me. Oh well. I'm shocked you sound this good without being to Japan or even doing iTalki lessons or any exchanges etc. This video is the real proof that input is greater than output. Of course, most people don't do input as intensively as you did (with Anki etc) so their results aren't as good.
I've realized the more you learn a language the less it becomes about the goal and more about the journey! I've had to cut out a lot of my immersing time with uni starting up again but I'm hoping I'll soon get a chance to go all in again.

Last time, I had already finished WaniKani, and I've now also finished the Core 2k/6k deck on Anki after you recommended it. Thanks a lot for that, btw. Immersion-wise, I've gotten a lot done in the past year. I feel like I now completely understand almost everything from a grammar standpoint, leaving only a bunch of vocabulary and phrases to supplement. But, still, I went from taking like 2 months to read a light novel volume to about 2 weeks, so the gains are huge! I must say, I haven't taken your advice as to sentence mining, despite saying I would... in place of that, I guess I'll try to read some more. @@steven-xb7rf On one hand I have watched a couple of animes in Japanese, the first ones were a pain to get through but it does get easier. On the other hand I frequently forget some words and catch myself searching the definition of something I have "learnt" before.
I also tried to play a VN, but after struggling for a few hours and mining a few words every sentence I just shelved it and will revisit it later. So I would like to think that I'm barely N4.

I started learning japanese because of your videos.
I'm usually the kind of person to pick something up overenthusiastically and drop it after a week or two. However, i've been sticking with learning japanese for about 8 months now, which is huge for me and i honestly don't think about giving up anymore.
I might not be as disciplined as i could be (on average i only learn like 30 minutes a day and quite inconsistent), but i'm having fun and i'm slowly progressing forward.
I hope to be close to your current level once it's been 4 years for me
wow, you're so much like me. i wish i could be consistent with things i pick up and attempt to learn instead of dropping them after a week or two. though, we're on the same boat for japanese and we at least keep improving, so that's still a good thing i guess

2 Years later in my own Japanese studies I finally got to go to Japan, I can't wait to hear about your experience visiting it was amazing when we went in November. Not too cold, not too hot, perfect weather every day.
Videos like yours are why I’m still learning Japanese after 648 days (according to duolingo) 💪
it's a very commendable effort but Duolingo isn't the best option for learning Japanese. I would suggest stuff like Todai for reading practice and Satori reader for both reading and listening. As for vocab i found 2 simple apps called Kanji Study and Japanese Vocabulary that help a bunch and go level by level. Personal preference though. I have not done sentence mining yet since I am simply not good enough but planning to next year in Summer.

I haven't watched a ton of your videos but you are one of the most motivating people I have watched. The reason I say this is that you are so incredibly down to earth and seemed as if you started your journey in a very relatable and tangible position. While there are mistakes one can make, sticking to something you can sustain is the way to go. I have my whole life to learn Japanese, rushing will only lead to burnout and severe opportunity cost from my other interests and responsibilities. It's been less than a year from when I started but even less with very structured learning, so I still got a ways to go.
Thank you for being an example of someone who has seen success in a way that seems possible for others.

It's insane how much you've improved! You inspired me to learn Japanese myself and i've been going at it daily since the start of April, I have racked up almost 2k words on Anki! Thank you for being such an inspiration to me. I, personally, didn't know anyone in Latvia or in the Baltic states that studies Japanese, so you have really helped me stay on track and learn every day when it comes to Japanese.
Despite what any other people might say about your jp skill, I think the fact that you are committed to jp for this long is really commendable and as long as you don’t give up you are gmi!

I agree about TH-cam. Even if you are only interested in anime, stretching your ability by doing TH-cam which is harder makes watching anime easier.

Thankyou so much for making these progress videos. They have inspired me to take up learning Japanese and I'm currently on a 41 day anki streak while working a job selling christmas trees so i can afford the genki text books lmao. I hope to one day comment on a video of yours in the language without having to look up words in dictionaries but its going to be a long ride however you have prepared me for it . There is so much demotivating content around the internet and yours has completely changed my perspective on language learning so once again thankyou for making the content you make and see you in 4 years when I'm "fluent"

i've been practicing using mostly anki for about a year at this point (and watching your videos on this for even longer), and while i've definitely felt improvement during that time there have been many situations where i'd encounter a word (or even many) in something i was watching or reading that i just completely didn't understand. i've wanted to avoid spending money on my learning as much as possible as i wasn't really sure how far i would be willing to go, but seeing how well you were able to manage yourself in those conversations on vrchat reminded me of why i started in the first place: to simply be able to talk to people from another culture that live vastly different lives from me. later this month i think i'll purchase a year of migaku and start using a more consistent schedule for studying.

I am not learning japanese but I am learning korean and I am currently on my 600ish day of anki, I am always really happy to see your progress videos as they make me excited for my own futur progress and also prove that hard word and consistency are key! I also have been using Migaku for a while and it surely is a game changer, last year because of my studies I couldn't do more than 8-9 new words a day because it took too long to mine, now with Migaku I am at 15 new words a day and it's really comfortable. Can't wait to see what the future hold and to see your 5 years update video!

This video was recommended to me at the right time, now I am motivated again! I’m currently finished with the 2k6k Anki decks and struggle now to add 20 new cards each day through reading practice. It’s way mor time consuming as I originally thought!
I have an issue where I struggle to commit to hobbies that aren't monetizable or directly applicable to future success. I've always wanted to learn a second language, but I'm always falling off because I'll start to feel like I'm wasting my time at some point (I can't see a second language being of any use down the line, other than for my own enjoyment). Hearing that you've considered whether it's worth it or not and still committed to 4 years of effort without regret has got me thinking about this all again. I think I'm going to give it another shot, anyways great video and thanks for rekindling my interest haha

16 months into Anki mining. I have to say I'm surprised how much of VR Chat segment I understood without English subtitles. While I couldn't understand anything in certain topics the others were eazy.
In 35 day I'm also also finishing my first Anki deck (Currently doing 6 words a day so I know exactly when I finish it). After that I'm starting 2k/6k deck and Grammer practice.
Even though I'm doing only 20-30 minutes a day of words mining I still notice huge improvements.
Seeing your videos is super motivating because I know what to expect after another and another year.
I was also wondering about Linux update video. Well nice you included explanation in that for. Hope one day you can try to switch again and find yourself never wanting to go back anymore. Maybe that day I will also be able to write similar comment entirely in Japanese.

Thanks for making another milestone update. The past two months, I've been slowing down with my studies thanks to being busy and just feeling burnt out. As a result, I've put in a lot less time than I used to into immersion, reviews, etc. It's been pretty disheartening to have to slow down so much, especially since I've been at it for 2 years now and wanted to start working more on output. Just last night, I started thinking about trying to put more time into it again. Seeing your video today just further cemented my motivation to dedicate more time to my studies and immersion. It's amazing how motivating it can be to see your progress, especially knowing that with time I can get where you are at. Here's to another year of Japanese, and whatever may come with it!
Glad I wasn't the only one sending web traffic to some random guys abandoned blog from 2007 lol. Great video as always! It's a nice check-in every now and then since I've also been at it for multiple years now. I figured I'd attempt N1 in December since there's a test really close to where I live. I never really studied for it either just immersed and did Anki etc. I thought I'd give it a shot for the experience or bragging rights. I'll have to find someone to brag to if I do pass.

Currently on day 470 of studying Korean in the same way you started learning Japanese. I'm on track to finish the Duolingo course (thank god) in about two months and I look forward to learning more with immersion while also continuing to add more cards to my Anki decks.
Don't know if you have heard but Duolingo has had a major update and to say that it is unpopular is an understatement and I can't say that I like it either. So I will be happy to be leaving it behind once I've exhausted its content with a strong foundation.

Congratulations on your milestone! I remember being very inspired by that duolingo video around when I was first start. I'm coming up on 2 years myself, and it was super exciting to realize that a lot of the random anki cards you were showing I've seen before. Also It's super interesting to me that you haven't really made reading a focus in your studies, and that it's all working out in the end.
Maybe the negative aspects just doesn't come through in the video, but I admire that you pushing back against some of the despairs of language learning. For me I to this day still get a lot of thoughts of "I'm not working hard enough" or "Why am I not better at this after so much work" etc. It's something a lot of people need to work on I think in the community. Every time I watch one your videos it inspires me to focus on the real reasons I'm doing this, and to keep the pace that works for me.
This video was so cool like all your videos! Your progress in your language journey is so inspiring and one of the main drivers that motivate me! Seeing you talking fluently to japanese people is so cool and I am very happy for you. I would be so happy so to ever reach your level of fluency in my life. Your videos show me what level I can hopefully obtain in the future. I passed N3 last summer and I will finish the last vocabulary of the 2K/6K deck in 4 weeks and probably follow your recommendation on what to do next (like sentence mining etc.). I will definitely rewatch your older videos for that!

Damn, i've been looking forward to watching this video the whole day. After watching your 600 days of duolingo video i decided "screw it" and installed anki. Little did i know it was going to become quite literally a drug (having madr me wake up multiple times in the middle of the night after forgetting to finish it).
Yet here i am at 535 consecutive days of anki, never having been happier. Learning japanese, is quite a nice use of my time since i can fuel my need to slack off while still doing something productive. Watching this video also made me realise i also started really trying to optimize every second of my times something i doubt i'd've done too soon otherwise, especially without having something daily to branch being productive off of. All i want to say is thanks for putting your journey out there inspiring me and many others to pursue this wonderful hobby!

I started learning Japanese around the time of your Duolingo video and each video you released caused me to challenge myself a bit harder making me a better learner. I have learned a lot now over these past few years. I've had amazing experiences on vr chat talking with Japanese natives although I'm probably around n5-n4 ish I've still had fun actually understanding somewhat and being able to communicate. I'm looking forward to when I can get to that 99.9 percent comprehension so I can have long conversations like you had! Thanks for the videos again. Can't wait for the next update!!

It's been awesome being able to follow your journey of learning Japanese, and i'm glad TH-cam one day recommended me your first 600 day video way back when. Being on and off again for years, and a fair way into Core2k/6k and discovering your own journey has been inspiring and i'm sure i'm not the only one who really felt affirmed by watching your progress for a while now.
Currently despite getting towards the entire of my uni degree i'm at 96% of Core6k with not enough sentence mining, but still, the progress is visible and hopefully we'll all make it to the point we want to be. I dunno why I got so rambly, but cheers Livakivi, you're a legend and I look forward to every video even if it's about personal experiences or the house renovations.

I'm listening to your Japanese output and it's mind blowing how good you sound. I saw your previous videos a while back so I'm not positive but I really think your accent got a lot better too. I consider myself pretty fluent in Japanese with my N2 level. I left Japan about the time you started learning Japanese and I'm a little embarassed to think that you passed me. Oh well. I'm shocked you sound this good without being to Japan or even doing iTalki lessons or any exchanges etc. This video is the real proof that input is greater than output. Of course, most people don't do input as intensively as you did (with Anki etc) so their results aren't as good.
I've realized the more you learn a language the less it becomes about the goal and more about the journey! I've had to cut out a lot of my immersing time with uni starting up again but I'm hoping I'll soon get a chance to go all in again.
Wow, you've made superb progress since last year! I remember drawing massive inspiration from your previous video, and I've done a lot of improvement myself as well. Last time, I had already finished WaniKani, and I've now also finished the Core 2k/6k deck on Anki after you recommended it. Thanks a lot for that, btw.
Immersion-wise, I've gotten a lot done in the past year. I feel like I now completely understand almost everything from a grammar standpoint, leaving only a bunch of vocabulary and phrases to supplement. But, still, I went from taking like 2 months to read a light novel volume to about 2 weeks, so the gains are huge! I must say, I haven't taken your advice as to sentence mining, despite saying I would... in place of that, I guess I'll try to read some more.
