    S.T.U.N. Runner (Spread Tunnel Underground Network Runner) is a fast-paced, racing/shooter arcade game released by Atari Games in 1989. The player pilots a futuristic speed bike which can exceed 900 mph through various tunnels and courses, with changing environments, hazards and enemies. S.T.U.N. Runner was notable for its early use of high-speed 3D polygonal graphics, and was based on an evolution of Atari's pioneering Hard Drivin' hardware.
    Gameplay:
    The final goal is to reach the "Ultimate Challenge", an endless race filled with surprises, where the player must simply get as far as possible in the allotted time. Markers on the Ultimate Challenge course show the names of the five players who have traveled the farthest, who are tracked independently of the game's traditional high score table.

    • @AzrialAlaria
      @AzrialAlaria 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think you need to consider the hardware it was running on and the fact it was a handheld system. A game like that on a handheld should not have been possible, except that Atari found a way (using certain graphical tricks) to create the illusion that some things that "look" 3D are actually not at all, they are still sprite based. So really it just comes down to how the game was made on the Lynx. That's what is impressive about it.

    The Midway Arcade Treasures 3 port was awful. Not only was the game needlessly sped up making it virtually unplayable, but the sound effects were so ear piercingly bad, it can give you a headache after a short period of time playing. Sucks that there's still no good home version of this game, at least from my knowledge.

      The Amiga does 3D slower than the ST due to its slower clock speed, so it couldn't really be better.

    • @off1k
      @off1k 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It wouldn't be easy Corsa15DT, the Arcade version is 4 CPUs with 1 of them clocked at a massive 48Mhz in 1989, also has 3 or 4 sound processors too if memory serves and at an resolution of 512x240. An Amiga or ST with 1 CPU clocked at 7.09 and 8Mhz respectively is not enough grunt to do it justice, even at the lower res the Amiga and ST generally used for games. Also bad routines and programming skills can be blamed as games like No Second Prize and Vroom on Amiga/ST do show that 3D games can have nice speed on these Systems.
      @2DFlightsim, Most Amiga and ST 3D games are same frame-rate, there are some that are faster on ST, these are usually games with less colour and/or lower res than Amiga version. Atari ST speed advantage gets lost because of the inferior DMA structure the ST has, so components like sound or even the mouse use more CPU cycles compared to Amiga, just about everything in Amiga has Direct Memory Access across it's 25 DMA channels.
      For anyone wondering why the Lynx has no problems, it's because the Lynx version is not 3D, it's using the Scaling hardware the Lynx has to fake it, kinda similar to SNES hardware scaling except the Lynx scaling is far superior as it can scale everything, not just sprites on 1 graphic plane, it's also much lower res at 160x102. Plus it looks a lot better on the real deal than it does here.
