Muhammad Ali Debates on Vietnam War

  • A heated debate between Muhammad Ali and David Susskind on Ali's trial for refusing the Vietnam war draft, the debate took place in 1968. This is when Muhammad Ali was still in the Nation of Islam (NOI) and adhere to their theological idiosyncratic form of Islam that mixes black ultra-nationalism and the Islamic faith, he later left the organization and embraced orthodox Sunni Islam in 1975 shortly after the death of Elijah Muhammad.

Elijah Mahomud's life was dedicated to exploiting the misery of his people for his own personal gain. Elijah, of course, recognized the hunger for release from his many chronically low self-esteem cult followers. The quick way out and up was to learn to hate someone else. Mahomud, backed by a goon squad that Attila the Hun would have looked on fondly, taught a great many black people to hate and call it a religion. The Nation wanted Malcolm X dead because he told the truth on the Messenger, but the Man wanted him dead because not only was he effective domestically, but he was hooked up with undesirable Arab and African leaders. Elijah's purpose was to actually overthrow our Government and take Land.

@@jessevangans2195 haven't you listened to his words? The man said that Ali was a part of "an active militant group who seek for the total destruction of the white race". Also, he called them *black* Muslims (telling that as an insult), and claimed their final goals were "the segregation and the white genocide". If that doesn't make the interviewer racist, then at least he is an unlearned and unrespectful man who is driven by hatred and prejudice. Period.

Ali was big in his life and even his death. In his entire debates and interviews one could see the greatness of a man. In this debate in particular, he outlined all the atrocities the white race has and continues to do to the African people simply because of their color, shame. One could see the hatrad in the voice and posture of that American racist on the panel. Ali continues to live and being remembered, while all the racists are no longer being.

Muhammed Ali was an unbelievable person, there so much to his life but I wanna share a few things with you which u probably won't know:-
so many heart warming storys about him from ordinary people, ie an ordinary English family in a run down neighborhood, Ali bumped into the dad somewhere, then went to the guys house for tea, and would go and visit them EVERY TIME he went to England. He befriended people all over the world from ALL walks of life, from ghetto's in Europe, to villages in Africa, and he would make considerable efforts to visit them regularly.
from age 6 or 7 he didn't get on the school bus, he ran behind it (for fitness/training) chanting "I'm going to be heavyweight champion of the world", while all the other kids laughed at him.
one of his training camps for a title fight, he went to a remote cabin in the mountains somewhere, completely alone for 3-4 months, no gas/heating/electricity, just a tap for water. he would train alone just doing fundamentals, running, chopping trees/firewood, etc.
he took a good few of his biggest fights to poorer countries (ie Africa) so poor people could watch the fights. he basically made boxing an international big money sport. which champion today would fight in the African slums??
he traveled the world doing lectures and speeches, as well being a pro fighter.
a massive number of Pro world class athletes today have taken inspiration from Ali, from many different sports.
Ali's will power is off the charts, he became cabbaged at a relatively young age, yet still accomplished so much in his life.

Yes !! That would have been a dynamic intense debate indeed. It also depends on which Malcolm X . The Malcolm X before he realized the Nation of Islam was fraudulent or the Malcolm X who realized that the nation of Islam was fraudulent and corrupt and racist resulting in his renunciation of the Nation prior to the Nation murdering him ? I think there would be 2 totally different interviews. Soon after this interview Ali backed away from the Nation of Islam, yet retained his Islamic faith and dignity. While Suskind was wrong for attacking Ali on his "intelligence" and his pacifism, he was dead right on the insidious nature of the "Nation of Islam". History, Ali and Malcolm X all proved what Suskind was speaking to.

Believe it my friend. I am a child of the 1960s.The hatred against Black people was every where, especially in the South. The core power structure of law enforcement, judges and elected officials at that time were 10 times worse than David Susskind.Imagine a people for over 350 years up to that point never recalling being embraced. Never being made to feel welcome. Constantly being reminded that their mere existence made others feel uncomfortable .The thinking was,why are these people so angry. The Native Americans were nearly exterminated and relegated to Reservations, sometimes far away from their ancestral lands. Why are those people in such despair, they asked. Yes,the Irish, the italians, and other European immigrants were at first treated terribly when they arrived upon American shores.Thank goodness American society took their shoes off of their necks after a few generations after it was determined that those groups now met the acceptable level of Whiteness, especially after WW2. These ethnic groups proved their mettle as fighting men during WW1.And when they felt they still were disrespected when they came home, they demanded respect. And resorted to violence when need be.The Irish and Italians and the Slavic peoples busted heads during the Union wars of the 1930s.When these same groups of working class Whites proved their mettle once again after WW2,the US government now intervened to help these soldiers, their families and other Whitesmove quicker into the middle class and out of the underclass. The Blacks, the Chinese and the Mexican Americans were not so lucky. The Black soldiers that come home after serving in segregated battalions, 6 members of my family amongst them, were still treated like sh*t when they came home. IT was as if their service to their country meant nothing. They as well as the rest of the Black community became increasingly angry, disillusioned and frustrated. I mean they were like what the f**ck else do we have to prove to be treated as equals. The Black organizations such as the NAACP tried use the courts to remedy the terrible injustice and discrimination. BY the mid 1950s the Rev. MARTIN LUTHER KING advocated for nonviolence. Yet people where shot and killed, biten by dogs and hosed down like animals Why are these people so angry, they said.So you had the rise of Malcolm X and then the Black Panthers. Every action has a reaction. It took Blacks 350 years up to that point to have a reaction. IT was about f**king time. You tell me in the history of any part of the world where people of any race didn't rise up and say enough is enough. How did the American government respond after the monumental Civil rights legislation of 1964&1965,I saw firsthand the massive flood of drugs into the community. The elders were dying off like crazy, the backbone of many of our communities. Then President Nixon came along and really kicked our ass by destroying the Black Panthers with massive firepower and taking out legitimate community leaders for good measure. The mindset in the 1960s was that unless a people were exterminated for all to see in technicolor, no sympathy was warranted. 350 years of so much hatred and systemic racism simply did not qualify in the minds of men like David Susskind.Or President Nixon. The irony of that Era was that Chinese who were treated so terribly as far back as the 1860s still went about their business, quietly. Thus they were designated the model minority. Thus the powers that be determined that the shoe should be taken off of their necks. So put all of this into context when viewing the video. Just hearing a man like David Susskind gave me the creeps. Because it was a reminder that there were millions of people in America just like him.

@mike stambaugh Yes Muhammad Ali "made it".But that doesn't mean he no longer had the right to speak out against the systemic racism and injustice he endured as a child and as a young adult as well as his family. Would he have been acceptable in America if he was just another ordinary Black man at that time. And yes I do have empathy for poor White coal miners from West Virginia, especially at that time. And the fact that many suffered from the ravages of Black lung disease. But I don't know if these White coal miners suffered from the same indignities in public spaces under Jim Crow segregation or anywhere else in the country at that time. The premise being that all human beings at least be given the presumption of innocence, goodness, trust and respect .Not based on athletic skills, celebrity status, wealth, ethnicity or race.I believe that if Americans of all races no longer fight for justice for all there would be no justice at all for anybody.Unfortunately American society is headed for a full fledged Oligarchy. The US vs THEM mentality has been clouding the judgment of ordinary Americans for centuries.

@@soapsportsnews5727 Given that they weren't face to face, there's no doubt in my mind that an extremely opinionated guy like David Susskind would have addressed Mike in that manner. Of course Mike wouldn't stand for that nonsense, and would have quickly told him to go where the sun don't shine, but in more graphic terms, just like he did to everyone else that rubbed him the wrong way.

After years ... this show real racism during that time. The feeling is so real, NOI may be not represent a true muslim but when people in despair, they hold onto what they can hold on. Looking back, David Susskind just humiliate himself more and show how disgrace he is.

  • @tomsmith7742
    @tomsmith7742 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

Susskind kept hammering the point that Ali was breaking the law by dodging the draft- a point which Ali never denied. Implicit in Susskind's argument was the assumption that the Vietnam War was a just war, which we now seem to universally accept as a fallacy. Ali's insistence that he was dodging the draft because he was a pacifist was a huge mistake- even though it was almost certainly the truth. That would imply that Ali would have dodged even World War II, which almost everyone today accepts as a just war for a righteous cause. Ali should have been making a much bigger point: that cicli disobedience against immoral wars, and laws supporting immoral wars, is righteous, not evil, and not un-American. Ali should he have pointed out that Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, and Adams (all white men) broke the national law too- the law against treason, which was not just an offense that would have landed them in prison for a few years, but would have gotten them hanged. he should have emphasized that those four "great Americans" all advocated the violent and blood-soaked overthrow of the national order- the British Crown- and yet today they are seen as national heroes, not "thugs." The whole basis for Ali's stance should not have been religious freedom; it should have been morality itself, which is independent of and innate to all races and creeds everywhere; specifically the immoral treatment of blacks by American whites for 400 years. If Ali had pressed Susskind on that issue, Susskind would have been forced to concede that sometimes breaking a law is the right thing to do. End debate: Ali wins by knockout.

War was declared on black people and Mr Susskind showed a lack of I.Q. when confronted with FACTS. So AGAIN I will declare that Mr. Susskind wasn't going to concede to ANYTHING!
