    My Dad was a welder and pipefitter. He taught all 5 of us boys how to weld, when we turned 7 yrs old. I too was a welder and mechanic. Your video is spot on. Kudos to you sir. Great teaching.

    I'm approaching 40 faster than I'd like, and it's a very sheepish thing to try and seek knowledge for skills I've always wanted to acquire! After decades of working in retail and struggle-bussin' to survive, I'm finally starting to just dive into learning what I can even without financial capability. It took me 30min to watch through while taking notes and I plan to rewatch this and your other videos. Thank you so much for the straightforward introduction. You're phenomenal

    I've been welding 27+ years and there's a ton of great information in this video, all of it spot on. One minor thing I'd like to mention, your nozzle should never be more than hand tight. I never use my welpers to remove or install the nozzle, even if it's hot. Here's why: What I'm seeing at work is younger welders being told to tighten a hot nozzle using their welpers. When it's hot, the inner diameter is slightly larger and doing this causes the threaded insert to get pushed into the nozzle. This results in your contact tip sticking further out and the gas circulation to be incorrect. In the end you run into the contact tip dipping into the puddle and potential porosity. It only stood out to me because of what I'm seeing from inexperienced welders being given the wrong information where I work. Other than that, great video.

In teaching others at my various jobs, others appreciate explanations of what is happening and how it is happening. This is what you are doing, and I appreciate it greatly. Thanks for this. I just bought a small farm in Canada a few months back after retiring from the Canadian Army and have thought several times already that I need to learn to weld. But I found the whole thing a bit intimidating as I have never even touched a welder before. Then today my neighbour called me and offered me a mig welder and all of the accessories for free. He bought it six years ago and he’s never used it. He said I can just have it. I thought that was pretty awesome of him. I offered to pay him of course but he shut me down and said if we’re going to be neighbours we should also be friends!! Pretty damned awesome!! So I’ll be picking it up this week and thought I’d better start learning. Thanks for this video. I shall watch some more! Not quite as intimidating as I thought.

    Ok. I've been welding for roughly 30 years, and I have found that if you drag a weld, it does NOT give better penetration in your base metal. Pushing your weld cuts a channel for the filler metal to fill, as the filler will build up behind the arc. Think of the electrode flame travel as an air arc gouge machine. This is especially prominent for copper clad, or "hardwire". Flux core is a totally different animal. Especially dual shield. You can run dual shield in either push or pull, but I still prefer push, due to the electrode flame travel.

    So ive been learning to weld just at work, with no one who really knows how to weld, nice to have this available. Lots of just plain trial and error lead me to getting the right angle, not having the line stick out to far, i tend to weave my weld just because its easier for me to keep on my line that way for some reason. But good lord is it nice finding this to lean on because it sucks trying to learn something and having nothing to really refrence or no one to ask.

I'm a 30 yr old single.mom and my muffler fell off the flange so naturally I don't want to take it to a shop because I need the vehicle and I can't ride around loud af either. I have a friend with a few different welders and he said tig would be the best for this job. I had no idea, so I found you!!! thank you so very much bro you have NO IDEA HOW EASY YOU MADE MY LIFE!!! you should for real be a master welder if your not already. my dad was a master welder for 45 years. I really wish I would of listened to the shit he was teaching me as a kid... I used the feed alot just doing some I beams or some steel frames ever once in a while and also did alot of mig welds but tig I never did and now I'm pretty good after a few runs of course. I will be doing my muffler flange in the next few days. thank you so very much!!! your amazing and awesome and I can't thank you enough ❤️

    Appreciate the info and breakdown of it. I’m a sign maker and I need sign base built from 1/4 plate with 2x2 square tube 10 inches tall welder in the vent of the plate. This job was passed on to other that always seemed to be busy. So I’m taking on the challenge of just welding them my self. We have a nice miller mig welder and huge metal work table. So I’m here looking for tips on how to correctly weld. It’s just sign post nothing fancy but I still wanna be able to say yep I did those. I have 8 of these to do next week and I spent some time this week practicing on scrap. I see a few things I was doing wrong and have a better understanding of the settings thanks again. And hopefully the welders at work won’t give me to hard a time when I’m done👍🏻

    Tim, I'm absolutely just a hobbyist welder short on knowledge and grateful for youtube. Question--why not make a jig to use for holding the torch at the right angle (at least for simple linear welds)? Maybe there's just too many variables involved for different welds that are required. I'm 67 and just learning but wish there was a jig that could hold my torch to take away my unsteadiness.

    Very nice basics good refresher for intermediate hobbyist welders too like myself!
    From own experience I'll add one nuance tip to prop hand: don't lean on it too hard or grip the welding gun too hard (like an actual gun).
    It might feel like it's stabler but moving along becomes harder which indeed easily leads to curving the wrist.
    You need to be able to slide along the supporting surface effortlessly.

    When welding to achieve superior quality, it's important to remember to always push the gun or rod so that you don't end up with excessive slag inclusions/imperfections in your welds. Yes, you can get away with this to some degree around the house or farm, but beginners should get in the habit of pushing rather than dragging. You'll understand why when you see your welds under X-ray or a high-pressure bend test. Controlling that puddle is critical, and when it's in front instead of behind you can see everything it's doing. Great video as usual.

    • @melgross
      @melgross 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Running angle really doesn’t matter unless you’re running an excessive angle. There are a lot of myths in welding, just as in any area. MIG is pretty forgiving in this. Tim is correct, and Jody from Jody’s welding tips and tricks has also shown that there’s no difference with MIG. I’ve been doing it for almost 50 years, and have found no difference either. Stick out is more important, and that varies on a number of factors, so giving one number there wouldn’t be correct either.
      Flux core is a different issue.

    Great video!! I use to mug weld at a gate factory 2nd shift when I was a senior in high school!!!!
    Yeah no manipulation needed in most cases!!
    Shielding gas is so important!! When it runs out you will know! It will leave holes in the weld!
    Wire speed is crucial ! When I was learning how to weld , I would have my hand on the wire speed controller and turn it up and down as I was welding with the other hand , just to see and feel what the optimum speed was!!!!!

      Hi Chris, can you post to this thread how you like the course? I have watched several of Tim’s videos and find them to be excellent. I am a total newbie to welding and am ready to pull the trigger on the course. Only wanted to get some feedback from someone who has made the commitment. I am going to speculate that you are not disappointed by just reading all the positive comments people have written about this channel.
      Thanks

    Very good info sir, thank you for simplifying and explaining the relatively complex idea of mig welding. You are making all the variables involved much easier to understand and implement.

    When would one know it's time to change out the liner? Thanks for the video. Have you ever done any other podcasts? The one on welding tips and tricks about cracks was informative. It really showcased your knowledge and enjoyment of the welding industry.

      >>>When would one know its time to change out the liner?
      When resistance to the wire flow is prevented from freely feeding through the liner & contact tip causing an erratic/unstable arc. Usually, the main cause is a gummed-up liner from wire surface contaminants accumulating/clogging the inner liner. Sometimes rotating the liner 90 or 180 degrees might help, but replacing it with a new contact tip would be a better solution. .

      @melgross 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sometimes, removing the gun tip, and the connector from the welder, and blowing it out can solve the problem. Over time, powder from wire moving through the liner is generated. Along with dirt from the wire, it combines to form a sort of powdery sludge, narrowing the effective diameter of the tube, and causing friction. With cleaning, a metal liner will usually last from three to five 11 pound spools, depending on the hardness of the wire.

    So ive just been traching myself from literally zero knowlege base, weaving has really helped me keep my line straight and neat, should i keep doing that or just kind of start over and work on keeping my line straight with no weaving?

    Hi, beginner here with beginner questions-Why is it best to clamp the negative directly to your work? How is it better? Whats the idea? And, is there a time when it's absolutely necessary to clamp directly to your work?

      Depends on what quality of work you want achieve. Surely you will lose some power.
      It will cause welding current leakage or restriction. Or in other words, it will cause a drop in welding output voltage.

    Great tutorials, you are a legend in your explanation and demonstration. Could you do one on car body welding thin metal with flux core please, I'm trying to use 0.6mm. The gas is so expensive and I don't have a garage to weld. Would be great if you could. Thanks a million, great work. Cheers.

    Thx for great video.
    I am not new to welding but still have a lot learn. One thing that I hear a lot and you touched on it is that at times needing to speed up your travel speed for thin metal, outside corners etc. If the settings are correct, when I weld the weld pool dictates when I advance the arc. If I travel faster then the weld is crappy and compromised. Do not understand how someone speeds up a weld.
