  • VOCES8 is joined by Apollo5, the VOCES8 Scholars and members of The VOCES8 Foundation Choir for this performance of 'Die Könige' by Peter Cornelius. The recording features VOCES8's former Bass, Jonathan Pacey and is conducted by VOCES8's Artistic Director, Barnaby Smith.
    TEXT
    Drei Könige wandern aus Morgenland;
    Ein Sternlein führt sie zum Jordanstrand.
    In Juda fragen und forschen die drei,
    Wo der neugeborene König sei?
    Sie wollen Weihrauch, Myrrhen und Gold
    Dem Kinde spenden zum Opfersold.
    Und hell erglänzet des Sternes Schein:
    Zum Stalle gehen die Kön'ge ein;
    Das Knäblein schaun sie wonniglich,
    Anbetend neigen die Könige sich;
    Sie bringen Weihrauch, Myrrhen und Gold
    Zum Opfer dar dem Knäblein hold.
    O Menschenkind! halte treulich Schritt!
    Die Kön'ge wandern, o wandre mit!
    Der Stern der Liebe, der Gnade Stern
    Erhelle dein Ziel, so du suchst den Herrn,
    Und fehlen Weihrauch, Myrrhen und Gold,
    Schenke dein Herz dem Knäblein hold!
    TRANSLATION
    Three kings journey from the East,
    A little star leads them to Jordan's banks,
    In Judaea the three of them seek and inquire
    Where the new-born king might be.
    They wish to make offerings to the child:
    Gold, frankincense and myrrh.
    And brightly shines the light of the star.
    The three kings enter the stable,
    They gaze in rapture at the child,
    Bowing low in adoration,
    Gold, frankincense and myrrh
    They bring to the child as offering.
    O child of man! Follow them faithfully,
    The kings are journeying, O journey too!
    Let the star of love, the star of grace,
    Light your way as you seek the Lord,
    And if you lack frankincense, myrrh and gold,
    Give your heart to that sweet child!

    In Germany (at least in the south of Germany), around the January 6th, groups of children disguised as the three kings that have visited baby jesus in his manger, are walking from house to house knocking at each door (or rather ringing the doorbell nowadays) to visit the families. They explain that they did come to collect some money for beneficial purposes (no worries, it is organized officially by the catholic church) and also in most cases sing one or two songs, mostly only the melody. We call these groups of children "Sternsinger" ("star singers").
    When i was 18 years old, I joined such a group of "Sternsinger", who just did not stop perfoming this rite year after year, and everybody has become a young adult meanwhile. We were 5, the three kings and two servants and therefore could sing songs for 4-5 voices. "Drei Könige" by Corneilus was one of the ~30 songs we had in our repertoire, so I still know (20+ years later) the whole lyrics and each note of the tenor voice by heart. This video is a great reminder to these days. Thank's for that.

      The Bible states that the Magii visited Jesus in His family's own house, and Jesus may have been as old as two years of age.

    Angelic!🙏 and as a native german I'm always impressed by the very accurate pronounciation! E.g. the common word "Gold" which is pronounced so differently in the two language (the "L" sound) yet Jonathan manages it effortlessly!

    What a gem! There's something so special about this piece, it makes my skin tingly when I hear it done well, and this made my skin tingle! It's so nice to hear Jonathan's voice as a soloist, he did a great job! And that last note was _so_ _beautiful!_ Nicely done!

    You guys manage to make even Cornelius' kitsch to something noble and beautiful.

      The line between kitsch and beauty is sometimes very thin. What makes not to fall into kitsch? Perhaps sincerity and confidence. This piece is one of the few works that I too could have found kitsch, but which disarm me by what I perceive as their sincerity and their lack of fear of being labeled as kitsch. Other example : “The Lord Bless You and Keep You” by John Rutter, a composer of whom I hate everything I’ve ever heard, except for this piece and two other works : “Hymn to the Creator of Light” and “Dormi Jesu”, that I absolutely love.

      Almost certainly (& sounds like) the Ivor Atkins arr. familiar from Carols for Choirs I. It featured in this year's Carols from King's on BBC2 on Christmas Eve; NB that programme is not to be confused with the Festival of 9L&C broadcast live on the wireless, of which it is a sort of TV mash-down.
