Can you believe she has said she doesn't think what she does is that great. If I could sing like her I'd be singing from the roof tops. 🎶" You're the top you're the Colosseum" 🎵🎉🎉🎉
This is on my Top 5 Barbra's interpretations. This live performance is even better than the recorded one of the album. Her breath control is out of this world, he phrasing, her belting, her highs and lows are unparallel. The harmonica adds a nostalgic quality to the song. This is pure perfection.
This song is from the musical "House of Flowers" by Harold Arlen (music and lyrics) and Truman Capote (lyrics and book). This was Capote's first musical. After a Philadelphia try-out, the show opened on Broadway on December 30, 1954 at the Alvin Theatre. The story concerns two neighboring bordellos that battle for business in an idealized Haitian setting. One of the sex workers, Ottilie alias Violet (who sings this song), turns down a rich lord to marry a poor mountain boy named Royal. Her madam plots to keep her by having Royal sealed in a barrel and tossed into the ocean. Royal escapes the watery death by taking refuge on the back of a turtle. The lovers are eventually married and live happily ever after. Diahann Carroll played the role of Ottilie alias Violet in the original production. Barbra Streisand also recorded the song "A Sleepin' Bee" from this show for her debut album "The Barbra Streisand Album" released in February of 1963. Barbra Streisand referred to it as her favorite song, and performed it in her national television debut in April 1961 on the "Jack Paar Show."
She also recorded 2 more gorgeous songs from the score: "Don't Like Goodbyes" on her People album, and the title tune, "House of Flowers" on an album Harold Arlen made of some of his own songs. Both are highly recommended. Such an underrated, under-heard score in general.
You know Saeed, I am so glad that all these artists recognized their God given talent for us to lose ourselves in and forget about the daily humdrum. TX again for your terrific channel and insights. Greetings from South Africa
She sang this very early on in her nightclub career when she was first getting attention, and this is probably the most finished production she ever had of this superb tune, with her great interpretation and orchestral production. This is a beautiful, beautiful thing.
It is just astounding that a human being can open their mouth and have that come out of it. Barbra has a singular voice that will never, ever be replicated. You can put all of the modern pop stars together and they don't equal the quality of this one woman's voice. Michael Bublé did a duet with her and he said that "her throat was kissed by God" and he is right. It is perfection.
I loved your statement at 9:28 "C'mon, leave some for us" with regard to Barbra being so good at so many things. Barbra was the first performer to achieve EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) status. For her first film role as Fanny Brice in "Funny Girl" (1968), she not only won the Academy Award for Best Actress at the 41st Academy Awards, she also won the Golden Globe and was named Star of the Year by the National Association of Theatre Owners. She was the first woman to receive an Academy Award as a composer for writing the love theme from A Star Is Born (1976). With the release of Yentl (1983), Streisand became the first woman to write, produce, direct, and star in a major studio film. The film won an Oscar for Best Original Score and a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Musical. Streisand also received the Golden Globe Award for Best Director, becoming the first (and for 37 years, the only) woman to win that award. Billboard ranked Streisand as the greatest solo artist on the Billboard 200 chart and the top Adult Contemporary female artist of all time. Her accolades span ten Grammy Awards, including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and the Grammy Legend Award; nine Golden Globe Awards; five Emmy Awards; four Peabody Awards; two Academy Awards; the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award; "Star of the Decade" Tony Award (1970); All-Time Favorite Musical Performer by People's Choice Awards (1988); and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. As one of the most acclaimed actresses, singers, directors, writers, composers, producers, designers, photographers and activists in every medium that she's worked in, Streisand is the only artist who is concurrently a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, Screen Actors Guild, American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences and Actors' Equity Association, as well as the honorary chairwoman of the board of directors of Hadassah's International Research Institute on Women.
When you reacted to One Less Bell/A House is Not a Home, I mentioned when someone asks why I love Streisand, I'd play One Less and I Never Has Seen Snow. Now you know why.
The song comes from a Broadway show called A House of Flowers composed by the great Harold Arlen with lyrics by Truman Capote … I believe the year is 58, but not sure!
Thank you Saeed for the reaction, I thought you might like it. The song is from a play 'House of Flowers', by Harold Arlen. And as you said, that long, high note, what a breath control do you need to have and holding it for that long, in pitch, in tune...amazing, but then we knew that already what a great artist she is. She approaches each song as a play, with a beginning, a middle and an end, that's the actress in her. There are so much more I will send to you, because I would like you to know her also as a beginning, a middle and an end. Keep up the great work you do, you are a man to my heart, when you love Barbra! By the way, Guy, you can use both the dutch or the french way...:)
Thanks for letting me know about the play. Beautiful song and absolutely mesmerizing performance. Only she can do it this way. Thanks again for this request!
Barbra brought new life to this song and A Sleeping' Bee from House of Flowers. You can't go wrong with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by Truman Capote, and that miracle of a voice from that miracle of a singer.
She can sing broadway tunes like no other. She's in a class of her own. And like others have said, your expressions are also 1 of a kind. I find myself watching you more than her, and I love her 😊. What a voice! Thank you , Saeed. Much love to you and your family ❤️ 🫂.
This song was performed on the television show called "Barbra Streisand and Other Musical Instruments." Is there a more fitting title?? Her voice is literally that versatile and precise. And, unlike so many other singers, the sounds flow out of her mouth so effortlessly... you never see a strain on her face or neck. A joy to watch, as much as to listen to. And that aura she gives off is palpable, and yet she herself is very down to earth. Love your reactions of Barbra.
One of her greatest! Huge fan favorite! So glad you finally got to hear/watch it! About the meaning of seeing snow... Since the musical is set in a hot Haitian climate, the people there have never seen snow in person. They imagine it must be so beautiful. So in the lyrics - "I never has seen snow. All the same I know. Snow ain't so beautiful, can't be so beautiful like my love is." - She's saying, she is so truly in love, that nothing on earth can be as beautiful as the one she's in love with. When I was performing my one-man show, a Harold Arlen tribute (the man who wrote this), in NYC nightclubs and cabarets, I had included this song. I loved singing it, and it was always received well. I loved this arrangement so much, I wrote it out for my accompanist so we could do it this way. And yes, that long high soft note (a Db5 she sings in her sweet mix [combination of head and chest voice] she's known for), I definitely included it, but mine was in a higher key, and of course in the male register. 😉 Thanks again Saeed! So enjoyable!
This is from the "third act" of the 1973 TV special "Barbra Streisand. . . and Other Musical Instruments" featuring guest star Ray Charles. This is a song from the Broadway show "House of Flowers" about a bordello in the West Indies. The score is by her fave composer Harold Arlen and the great Truman Capote. For more information, ask your gay male friends. :)
It's from House of Flowers. Barbra may be the only white woman to sing this song. Written by Harold Arlen - one of the greatest composers of the classics of the American Songbook. Everything from Over the Rainbow to Stormy Weather.
You should react to some of her duet songs .She did songs with Hugh jackman called Any moment now , Patrick Wilson loving you and one with Neil Diamong you dont bring me flowers all amazing songs. Keep up the good work
This is perhaps my favorite performance by Barbra Streisand. Thank you for reacting to it. Please react to Barbra Streisand singing "A Sleepin' Bee" which is from the same musical "House of Flowers" as the song "I Never Has Seen Snow." Her performance of "A Sleepin' Bee" in her first national TV appearance on the "Jack Paar Show" in 1961 is available on TH-cam: th-cam.com/video/gJkb4xf5Zog/w-d-xo.html
I believe it’s Creole idiom. I could be wrong. When you think about it, it actually makes more sense grammatically than the “correct” usage. Why do we only use “has” for the 3rd person singular ( he, she, it) and not the 1st (I) or 2nd ( you) person singular? Ah, English is so ridiculous sometimes….
Barbra Streisand was put on this earth to mend our wounds and heal our hearts. This is HIS greatest musical gift to mankind.
This was recorded L I V E. Camera never stopped. Flawless. Incomparable. Peerless.
Can you believe she has said she doesn't think what she does is that great. If I could sing like her I'd be singing from the roof tops. 🎶" You're the top you're the Colosseum" 🎵🎉🎉🎉
No autotune, no pitch correction. Just pure talent.
This is why she's BARBRA STREISAND.🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤😊
She's said she acts each song. It has a beginning a middle and an end like a play. Looking at her face you're just awe struck. 🎉❤😊
"When I laid my eyes on that near to me boy with the far away look" is a really painful emotion.
The fncking vocal control is astounding
This is on my Top 5 Barbra's interpretations. This live performance is even better than the recorded one of the album. Her breath control is out of this world, he phrasing, her belting, her highs and lows are unparallel.
The harmonica adds a nostalgic quality to the song.

That’s from when Barbra was at yet another career peak (The Way We Were song and movie, What’s Up, Doc was box office gold)
Truly sublime!

That exquisite head tone near the end is a C#… and she literally melts into the orchestra- it’s perfection
You're rigjt, whe's also an amazing actor. When i was a kid, I absolutely loved her in the 1972 Romantic Comedy "What's Up Doc", with Ryan O'Neal".
Barbra is the GREATEST!!!!!!

I thought I had heard everything from Barbara but this was new for me, thank you for featuring this
Thanks for checking it out with me!
From Broadway to movies to concerts to the pop charts, Barbra has succeeded beyond measure. This was beautiful,
Saaed, when you watch Barbra your face is priceless to watch.

Yes indeed, it's great

Good Barbra-choices every time
The first time I heard her sing "People", as a young lad, I instantly was in awe over her voice.! I never heard this song before, thank you very much!
Beautiful song! Thanks for watching.
She has a voice that could not possibly be confused with anyone else's. Just amazing, mesmorizing and can bring chills and tears.
The absolute Queen ❤
Me also never really has seen snow in person. Nice reaction to this beautiful song.

From the 1954 Broadway musical "House of Flowers" set in the French West Indies.

Love this song . . . and your reaction. She is indeed Special!
Everybody knows Barbra sounds great in recording studios, but she sounds even more spectacular life in televison studios,
And in concerts... have seen her three times... she leaves an audience breathless and stunned.

Nobody does it better!!!
Whitney Houston, imo, is the only one comes close. But not better than Babs.
100%
All Whitney did was yell; she did not know how to "interpret" a lyric and most of her songs were just pop songs.
i enjoy your videos buddy!! you should listen to the last song from Yentl!!!
Thanks so much! Definitely want to hear that one too.
