Diplomacy is trick of times. The USA did similar strategic onslaught on Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan. India had hard time then like now. Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran, you offer a great consolation to the world for an extremely balanced view and matured thoughts and scenarios on how to handle the fast changing situations in the world. Extremely thankful to you for your contributions today!
India is not a client state for any power. Russia has genuine security interests that were ignored. This is right in pursuing independent foregin policy.
There is one important lesson India’s ad hoc erratic policy wonks may well have taken to heart. It has been famously said, “Multi alignment is not to be confused with neutrality. They are not one and the same thing”. If and when the crunch time comes the former has all the making of a pratfall between two stools. Somewhere down the line things have to be accounted for.
Another good interview by Karan T. It’s laughable how this diplomat is trying to defend India’s normally hypocritical policies- talk the high moral path but act utterly shamelessly. This is certainly not the first time that India has tried to play a double game. That’s in its interests, but at least stop the usual hypocritical nonsense of looking down your nose at other countries for pursuing their own interests. He shows clearly that talk of international rules based order etc is utter nonsense to be used and thrown away as India has done for decades.
Our focus is not or Russia or Ukraine, the challenges we face comes from China and Pakistan. We cannot weaken ourselves by taking 'principled stands' on others war, specially when everybody knows that both the parties are compromising with principles. Regarding others who question us they should be asked why they were sending their fleets when India was trying to prevent a genocide in east Pakistan. Pakistanis and Chinese have not only blatantly committed genocides but they have also rewarded the perpetrators for committing these crimes. And this has been acceptable to western world so who gives a damn what these kind of people think about us.
Mr Karan the USA will never help India until and unless it serves their interest. Remember 62 , 65and 71 war and USA attitude. It was Russia who stood by India in time crisis.
Bharath is the spritual foundation upon which rests this material manifestation ; so India is bound to grow stronger both materially and spirituality irrespective of who is on whose side !
Wait your turn India. At the same time respect and recognize the legitimate rise of the other country such as this moment of times is China. Don’t operate out of fear in regards to China.
Good analysis by Mr Shyam Saran while keeping Indian interests in sight. My assessment is that Ukraine issue will result in much reduced relationship between Russia and India
@@nafissonnet4027 India has close ties with USA, UK part of NATO. Ukraine wants to be part of NATO and that will be massive compromise of Russia interests in the region. India's fight against China is completely different.
Those days are gone to bow down under USA pressure. We are a democratic country and we have our strength and respect to take decisions for progress of country.
N India wonders why nobody comes to help them when they have a conflict at their borders. It's simple: you maintain a neutral stance when other countries are in conflicts, they will do likewise. This was a great opportunity to call out an obvious aggressor and India blew this opportunity.
Obvious aggressor? And NATO and US are peace keeping forces, huh.. And as for the help, the west didn't help bcz it didn't suit their interest not bcz of india's neutral position, and in future also the help is not gonna come whether we support them or not.. And ukraine always taking anti- India stance and now asking for support, isn't that ironic..
@Hirakjyoti Barman you think Nato US would wait this long? Don't you think if they actually had aggressive intentions, they would have done it in the 90s when Russia was on its knees? Stop making excuses... your master said that Ukraine shouldn't even be a country. Think everyone heard that.

US’ strategy has to win Russia. That will happen by defeating Putin and getting him to trial. They have done that - Germany and Japan are economic powerhouse. That’s the way they will address China threat. No other way to succeed. China is the biggest threat. Russia is a barking dog that has a short life.

Very incisive analysis of India’s foreign policy stand with respect to Ukraine-Russia war. Very imp point made by Shyam sir is that India’s strength would go multi fold in international relations if it remains internally more cohesive and united. This should be a lesson to our politicians, people and media.
Indias action in security council is best at present,as india clearly said its against war,and clearly mentioned territorial integrity and soveignty, and cessation of war,and giving Ukraine humanitarian aid will perfectly balancing the act.
Mr. Thapar: Modi is doing what Nehru did in the case Hungary in 1956 and Indira Gandhi in the case Czechoslovakia in 1968 and in the case of Afghanistan in 1979. This is not the place for me to explain my point in detail.
Ethics and principles are given little importance while pursuing foreign policy in present times and also in the past. Each country these days give priority to their own interests. It is not an ideal world. India suffered a lot in the past due to its foreign policy based on principles.
In international politics, there is no permanent enemy or permanent friend. Every nation or country tries to serve its interests. Intellectuals have to fit their theory to support Action taken by nation and its their duty and can't run away from it.
They overlooked the size of Russia's economy. Many point out that Russia is not even among the top 10 economies in the world. Russia cannot remain a big threat for very long.
If there are two sides in the future - US & China .... then India is moving towards US and Russia is moving towards China which also kind of make sense .... the Ukrainian crises has only speeded that up ! .... democracies on one side and autocracies on the other side ! .... :-) ....
@karanthapar,@shyam sharan . Russia has kept nuclear in ready. Also against principles the civil life is targeted. Will u advice india to be neutral without condemning the aggression?

I would love to see you talk to him on the Russia Ukraine saga and India's pathetic stance on it.
Whom are we trying to impress or get certified by for moral uprightness in foreign policy?? Our own national interest are more important than anything else. The west is culpable of bloodshed in Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam and Syria - we want a certificate of pro-democracy from them?? We could one day be facing a bully the way Ukraine is facing today. If we dont prepare ourselves for that day and forever obsess about being right and impressive then we will be in big trouble and these folks will watch the game from their gallery. That is the message Ukraine should deliver us.

Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran, you offer a great consolation to the world for an extremely balanced view and matured thoughts and scenarios on how to handle the fast changing situations in the world. Extremely thankful to you for your contributions today!
India is the new strategic partner of USA (Bali Ka Bakra) lolz aur India ki current position is of Dhobi Ka kutta Jo na ghar Ka na Ghaat Ka lolz.
Wasn't the biggest democracy #India "quiet" on Soviet Union invasion of #Afghanistan as well, just like now on #Ukraine?
Karan! Why Russia is aggressor. It is unwise to comment on Russia without knowing history of West and East WW II & other events.
RSS Modi is also using history to screw the Muslims in India. Do you justify that?
India is not a client state for any power. Russia has genuine security interests that were ignored. This is right in pursuing independent foregin policy.
Much needed interview
He is the topper of UPSC CSE 1970.
When principals and interests collide ....
Our nation tuff time Sir g
Another good interview by Karan T. It’s laughable how this diplomat is trying to defend India’s normally hypocritical policies- talk the high moral path but act utterly shamelessly. This is certainly not the first time that India has tried to play a double game. That’s in its interests, but at least stop the usual hypocritical nonsense of looking down your nose at other countries for pursuing their own interests. He shows clearly that talk of international rules based order etc is utter nonsense to be used and thrown away as India has done for decades.
Fully agree 👍
This is how clever nation do and put people like you in deep frustration 😊.
When India liberated East pakistan USA had supported pakistan was that not hypocritical. So every nation takes its national interest first.
Proves how big a Vishwaguru India is and a nation who has the ability to take a stand which is right.
On a very pragmatic level, Russia drifting into China's fold is bad news for India.
As always, Mr.Karan was in his elements, his guest was scrambling for right answers, on the backfoot !
Salute to you Sir!!!
Karan and Arfa-two disgraceful jokers
Can you elaborate? Or are you just one of those shoot and scoot jokers yourself!
@@aman1245singh too long an explanation. And sure if you found it amusing good for you.
No nightmare --- china will be challenged near future.India should learn how to live alone.
Bharath is the spritual foundation upon which rests this material manifestation ; so India is bound to grow stronger both materially and spirituality irrespective of who is on whose side !
Why Karan try to put words in guest's mouth.
Haha your caste is funny , Atri . are you an SC like Mohan bhagwat?
Wait your turn India. At the same time respect and recognize the legitimate rise of the other country such as this moment of times is China. Don’t operate out of fear in regards to China.
Good analysis by Mr Shyam Saran while keeping Indian interests in sight. My assessment is that Ukraine issue will result in much reduced relationship between Russia and India
India did not vote against Russia. in fact hidden words India supports Russia
@@vm3306 that means u are losing ur grip with USA to fight against china
@@nafissonnet4027 India has close ties with USA, UK part of NATO. Ukraine wants to be part of NATO and that will be massive compromise of Russia interests in the region.
Ukraine has supported UN intervention on Kashmir and supplied arms to Pakistan.
Even though India wants to against Ukraine and fully support Russia it is not possible.
India's fight against China is completely different.
What kind of balance is Shyam Saran speaking of. Abstaining from voting clearly indicates our stance.
True! I'm astonished at how Career's are made and a Lifetime spent just Juggling Words! Phew!!
Those days are gone to bow down under USA pressure. We are a democratic country and we have our strength and respect to take decisions for progress of country.
Decision like support of attacking violent agresor which killing innocent people..?
World is becoming multi polar. India should create its own path.
During India China conflict I never see russians supporting us
N India wonders why nobody comes to help them when they have a conflict at their borders.
@@prajwas2004 They already broke up the Soviet Union. What more do you want them to do?? Russia is the aggressor but it doesn't mean that the West is innocent. Both are equally responsible for this war.
US lose more in such scenario..... China is a bigger thread to the hegemony of US than Russia because China has what Russia doesn't.... economic muscle.
US will make use of India, Japan n Australia to form QUAD ..for what?
Mr.karan ,you seem to have forgotten that Ukrainian Govt has castigated about our action on 370 ,they have been supporting Pakistan
Not forgotten. He is simply blinded in his hatred for Modi /Shah, as they have systematically degraded him in media, circles almost short declaring him persona non grata.
Observe his provoking questions to Saran. All are aimed at extracting some criticism on BJP govt frm Saran.
Conveniently overlooks the point made by you.
I would like to know what position Karan would like India to take under this situation,.
Not able to understand why Karan keep interrupting that defeats the purpose of brining someone as learned as Shyam Saran.
Karan you are asking questions BUT ignoring the HISTORY of THIS conflict.
Exactly, he was impatient in this interview. That's what I could gather, we are in a difficult place and i think we took the right decision.
“ India silent on Russian invasion of Ukraine to frustration of White House;” and “ india should stand with the West against Russia,” are Washington Post article headlines dated 26/02/22 and Feb. 24/02/22,respective. Patience to understand India’s tip pie toeing stance may be running out.
well. nato wants all on their side against china and russia.
Biden is insane. He is perceiving himself to be 21st century FD Roosevelt
If India stands against Russia say goodbye to Kashmir forever!
Russia is the only country Kashmir is still intact other india is the only country in the world who believes in peace by giving away territories!
India never starts war first. It's a country that believes in peace. We are completely neutral, just want peace for Russia and Ukraine.
US’ strategy has to win Russia. That will happen by defeating Putin and getting him to trial. They have done that - Germany and Japan are economic powerhouse. That’s the way they will address China threat. No other way to succeed. China is the biggest threat. Russia is a barking dog that has a short life.
Индийцы очень любят Россию. Мы братья и сестры. Много любви к России из Индии. А еще матушка россия это белый медведь и водка и снежинка и слишком много сигары.❤❤❤
WHATEVER HAPPENED CHINESE SITUATION VERY UNFORTUNATE SHOULD HAVE BEEN CLOSE TO THEM USED THEM TO BECOME A POWER LIKE CHINA DID WITH AMERICA REST ALL IS BALONEY
Dosti bani rahe…..remember
Sometimes we need to take tough decisions otherwise India is not fit to become a parmanent security member.
Our main strength is our population and open economy. Am sure for that reason no one will touch us. But indeed a tough time ahead.
Ethics and principles are given little importance while pursuing foreign policy in present times and also in the past. Each country these days give priority to their own interests. It is not an ideal world. India suffered a lot in the past due to its foreign policy based on principles.
*Anything that will sabotage India's interests will be endorsed by anti national platforms*
In international politics, there is no permanent enemy or permanent friend. Every nation or country tries to serve its interests. Intellectuals have to fit their theory to support Action taken by nation and its their duty and can't run away from it.
Aa🌄🌄
If India does not vote against Russia for invading Ukraine, how can we expect others to oppose when China does it to us ?
No need of expecting
If Mr. Thapar knows everything , then why he had called ex foreign secretary.
He is putting words in ex foreign secretary mouth.
even the Chinese have criticized Russia
They overlooked the size of Russia's economy. Many point out that Russia is not even among the top 10 economies in the world. Russia cannot remain a big threat for very long.
If there are two sides in the future - US & China .... then India is moving towards US and Russia is moving towards China which also kind of make sense .... the Ukrainian crises has only speeded that up ! .... democracies on one side and autocracies on the other side ! .... :-) ....
Tiwari in Punjab are SC but you brag like an OBC
Very highly insightful and informative interview!
A thought provoking interview.
Dushman ka dushman dost hota he aur dushman ka dost bhi dushman hota he
That India's reputation has been tarnished on the matter of Ukraine is a fact.
@karanthapar,@shyam sharan . Russia has kept nuclear in ready. Also against principles the civil life is targeted. Will u advice india to be neutral without condemning the aggression?
With such impeccable credentials as Shyam Saran has, it was a forgone conclusion that he would carry his point despite the indomitable you Mr Karan Thapar! But it was disappointing to see him defending the callously inefficient MEA, on the contrary Mr Shashi Tharoor on NDTV with New Nidhi Razdan was forthright and made his point brilliantly.
I would love to see you talk to him on the Russia Ukraine saga and India's pathetic stance on it.
India should look after itself. Just trying to be good to everyone or majority doesn't help India
Why should naming Russia be such a big deal ? Isn't it implicit ?
Why blaming Maidan Revolution for this situation is a big deal?
Whom are we trying to impress or get certified by for moral uprightness in foreign policy?? Our own national interest are more important than anything else. The west is culpable of bloodshed in Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam and Syria - we want a certificate of pro-democracy from them?? We could one day be facing a bully the way Ukraine is facing today. If we dont prepare ourselves for that day and forever obsess about being right and impressive then we will be in big trouble and these folks will watch the game from their gallery. That is the message Ukraine should deliver us.
👍
development of your domestic capabilities and.......the projection of a united country....fantastic synopsis
A perfect analysis, with deep implications on our country.
Ukraine never supported india in any international forum.
Pretty conversation
Cha-cha in white hair is very frustrated with guest opinion.
Classic Indian response. Take the side of whichever side wind blows and try to benefit. All these old foreign policy experts must be forced to retire
Moron, what do you expect then, Shouldn't our own interests be our first priority?
Everyone be it USA or Russia is doing to protect themselves, then why shouldn't we do the same?
Sir can you bring amb db venkatesh varma Or amb shivshankar menon on this show on this topic as well please
That is what happens when at the same time your benefactor of the past (Russia) and the current sugar daddy (US) come calling!
