I had one of the original dumpster diver’s back 11- 12 years ago. Very easy board to connect with. Stoked they’ve been reissued, would be interesting to get on one again
Thanks mate, good review. I've been surfing mine now for a few months and like it more than the Sampler as it is more manouverable. Prefer using pivot fins with it. It's my favourite CI board ever and would definitely recommend it. Probably a 2 or 3 surf adjustment factor.
Hi James! Thanks for the very detailed review. I was wondering what would be the perfect first shortboard for a beginner/intermediate like me. I can now catch green waves easily, angle my take off, go down the line but I still struggle to really generate speed to catch a section further away. I would like to improve my skills and really want to know how to do proper turns and all the maneuvers. (By the way I am 173, 63 kg, 26 years old, good shape, snowboarding since I was 5 years old). I was riding a NSP Fish 6'4 40 liter and felt like it was dragging me a bit. So I did a lot of research and it seems like a rocket wide or a dd2 would be perfect as a first shortboard. Easy to paddle, forgiving, fun to ride etc.. Which one would be better in your opinion for my current situation? Thanks in advance mate
@@QuentinMazet-e3d thank you for the support! I would recommend going with the 5’10 stock dim DD2. The board is very user friendly and the with the staged rocker paddles very well. I don’t have experience with the rocket wide, but absolutely loved the DD2. An experienced surfer with your height x weight would probably be on a 5’7 or smaller, but I think the 8 liter difference from your NSP to the 5’10 would be a big adjustment. Do any of your buddies have smaller boards in the 32ish liter range that you could paddle around?
@@SurfTechChannel Thanks for your reply ! Unfortunately no one has something around this liter.. and all the spots around where I'm from don't have a local surf shop where I can rent a hardtop surfboard. They have only foams boards. But I have friend (she is 5'5 58kg and a bit better than me) that has a sort of Mini Malibu in 6'0 - 20 1/4 - 2 5/8 - 36.2L and said to me the dims board are really great. She can also duck dive, not really deep but still enough to go under the waves. So I was thinking about the same dimensions and volume for the board that I will buy. 6'0 and around 35-36 liters.
Great question! In my opinion, yes, especially if the waves are weak and mushy. The spinetek sits out of the water a bit more to help in those types of conditions.
@@SurfTechChannel Thanks a lot, i'm looking for something to use as a daily driver but from Lost, because is more acessible here in my country, any othe recomendations?

Hey Lee, Just an update. Got my hands on a Phantom and plan on doing a full review on it in the upcoming future. At first glance, the Phantom is definitely a more refined shape and looks to lean more towards a high-performance daily driver (similar to Happy Everyday or Sub Driver 2.0). I would put the DD2 more in the groveler daily driver category.
@@robayre482 would love to get over there and surf some time! Are there any other models you’re interested in that you’d like to see a review on? Working on the FireWire mashup now
Hey James. Great review. How does it compare to a CI Sampler? That's my all time favourite small wave board. Trying to decide between a DD2 or another Sampler.
@@Henry46444 I would say it is similar to a sampler but much more improved. I had a sampler back in the day and remember catching the front edge more than a few times with the staged curves. I would recommend the DD2 over another sampler!
@@SurfTechChannel Thanks for getting back to me. Do you find it's loose enough in small waves with the single concave? I've only really ridden single to double concave in my small wave boards and not sure how a board with a single concave will go in smaller waves.
@@Henry46444 definitely! This is a great small wave board. I used it a lot in small waves as this part of the Atlantic got pretty small late spring to now and loved every session. I would put this in the quiver as a groveler! It was loose all around, held on rail when needed, but was early to break free
Yo, brother, how would you stack it up against the Pyzel Gremlin? I’m looking for a new surfboard with a bit more rocker so I can start throwing down some proper maneuvers. I’m pretty dialed in on gaining speed and finding a good line to surf with my 5'11 Gremlin, 34.9L, but since it's so flat, it’s really messing with my flow when I try to crank out turns - feels like I’m getting stuck in place. What do you reckon? Oh, and I’m sitting at 72 kg and 171 cm, if that helps.
@@Gilloozz the gremlin I have is straight grovel dimensions and it’s great for the smaller days, but I find the same thing where it surfs pretty flat. The DD2 would be a good option as it is more of a high perf outline. Given your height and weight, I would say that gremlin is a little long/ high volume. I’m 84kg and 180cm and ride my gremlin at 34L. Whatever you go with, I think going smaller overall will help cranking better turns. Maybe a 5’9 or 5’10 DD2
@@SurfTechChannel thanks brother, needed the motivation to take the decision of getting the 5'9, cheers 🍻 edit: would you recommend the Red tiger over the DD2 ?
@@Gilloozz Sorry, I didn't see your edit until now. I would say the Red Tiger is more of a high performance shape. That board excels in waves like trestles (evident by JJFs world title run). The Red Tiger has a more pulled in nose / tail and more rocker than the DD2. For smaller, weaker, everyday conditions, I would stay with the DD2.
Hey I’m 5”9 I’m 125 pound which stock option should I get. I was thing about the 5”8 but I don’t it to feel to bulky and what is that max feet this board can ride Thanks
@@SurfTechChannel I am currently riding a 5”4 groveler from a local shaper and I found it’s a little to small and would like something a little bigger I would say I’m lower intermediate and I’m typically surfing 2-5 ft of waves that are typically steeper
@@Ian-1080 unfortunately this one is going back to the CI rep as his demo board. I have many boards on the list to review or else I would 100% buy one myself!
@@Ian-1080 I don’t think so, I usually ride 31L and this one was about 32.5. I helped a lot for smaller summer slop! You can always loosen it up with different fins
Both are great boards, I would say it depends on the type of waves you’re surfing, the BV2 has a more continuous curve to the rocker as to where the DD2 is flatter in the middle and flips up on the ends. I would say the DD2 is better in smaller gutless surf, but if your generally surfing better waves the BV2 is a better option.
