I don't think it was deliberate. The driver was simply not paying attention, as he was straddling the cycle lane from when it started, despite there being plenty of space. Maybe he thought it was a taxi lane.
Good going, Mikey. I'm glad that you are okay. Very careless on his part; let's hope that he is able to focus more on his job in the future. All the best regards to you 🙏

If they commit road traffic offences, they can get points on their taxi license. 12 points on your taxi licence and you loose your job. That is very scary. I was run over by a car in my city a month ago. I can't remove the image of the car a second before hitting me and honestly, everytime I see a car passing a cyclist I look to make sure the pass is done safely, plus every single day I keep thinking of the fact that I could have died. People that intimidate more vulnerable road users from their car should have a more severe punishment
In a video showing examples of bad driving via Operation Snap, it was noticeable that while close passing a car would get points and a fine, most close passings of a cyclist, would only get a driving course.
It's moments like this that the back camera really makes all the difference, at first I was like "Well that was a bit close but those road markings wasn't very good to help with the situation" but as soon as you showed that back camera, yeah, he was entirely in the wrong, no sense of vision what so ever; there's a giant bike painted on the road! It's not exactly invisible, there's no reason to be using the cycle lane like a normal road. I know this next part is going to sound extreme but I've always wished that at places where it's a 1 way turn, they should add those spikes onto the road to punish anyone who's not paying attention. I honestly think that needs to be used in more places than just the exits of multi-story car parks
@@dedistaulapanodki6293 His job is paying attention. He is a professional driver and he was driving down an unbroken white line. People like him need taking of the road. There isn't any excuse foe this kind of behaviour
Even if the cycle lane isn't in operation at the time, you'd think the solid white line would give a good enough clue how much width to give. And then the rear camera shows there's no need, he could easily have pulled all the way into the other lane
The solid white line indicates to me, that the cycle lane is a Mandatory cycle lane; which means the taxi shouldn't have been driving in it at any time anyhow. The fact that he decided the rules didn't apply to him, even before he passed the cyclist; merely shows how little regard and how much contempt he has for other, more vulnerable road users...!!! 🤬
Dunno how it is in the UK, but here in NL a course is a much bigger deal than a fine. We don't have a points system, but being sent on a course will go onto your record, and that may affect future fines and other measures. As a fine... the course is €1300 payable by the offender, and takes 3 days of your time during working hours as well. It's no joke.
@@kaasmeester5903 okay, the UK definitely needs to move towards the course you describe. The UK course does go on a record, and will count against you in future infractions within the following years (three years, if memory serves me correctly). But it means you won't have penalty points on your license, and your insurance premium won't be affected. An awareness course is only supposed to be offered if you don't have existing penalties on your license, and only when the infraction wasn't especially egregious. It is supposed to be used as an option when a driver's actions fall below an acceptable standard of driving, but where it isn't so low that re-education wouldn't be effective. The course costs vary depending on which provider the driver elects to take the course with; it will be approximately €115 - €150. It takes most of one day. I have accompanied people who have taken a course, as a chaperone. We're not allowed to talk specifically about what happens on the course; it is okay to say that, for many people, it is effective in making them realise why their driving was bad. I've seen people wanting to drive to a better standard after a course. The cost of the course is based on the fine that would have been issued for the driving infraction, and isn't really designed to be a penalty. For many people, being hit with a penalty won't actually make them realise why their driving was bad. In some cases it just makes them bitter and resentful. BUT... I would rather see it be a three day course, with wider ranging lessons, and with a larger cost. I would rather see it be treated a little more like a suspended sentence (if a driver commits another infraction within three years, not only do they receive the appropriate penalties and fines for that new infraction, but the penalties from the original infraction should also be retroactively applied. The UK has a respectable level of road safety, but there are a huge number of very bad drivers. Many of whom just cannot imagine why they would be called bad drivers.
