Ducati Streetfighter 848 - Early Impressions Review

  • After a few weeks of 'not much happening really' and a week of illness, I finally got round to doing probably the most important video for this series. My first impressions of the Fighter. Hopefully, when I do a full review video in a year from now, my outlook will still be as positive.
    Thanks for tuning in.
    This is a continuous series of videos all about life with a Ducati, and all that entails, everything from polishing the beast to servicing it, and of course riding the thing.
    I'd been concerned for years about the reliability of Ducati motorcycles, due mostly to rumour, but decided it was about time I owned one of these gorgeous bikes regardless. Then I decided it might be a good idea to document my experiences on my channel in a long term review series. And this is it.
    If this is your first Ducati Diaries video can I suggest you check-out the week 1 'intro' video? Things may make a little more sense if you do. Here's a link to it...
    • Ducati Streetfighter 8...
    Now please sit back and enjoy the video. And if you have any comments, good or bad, please don't be shy.
    All the best.
    Rob Ash.

    Going with three cameras! You're raising the bar, Rob. So happy to hear how happy you are with the Duc.

      I'll let you in on a secet mate. Once I'd finished filming the review, I went back out with my helmet cam, and clamped it to different parts of the bike. ;o) Yes, I'm a cheapskate.Haha.

    Hi Rob, I have that exact one! Sorry I didn’t get it a year ago myself.
    It looks great on the bike and protects the radiator exactly where you need it.
    Looking forward to the next video.
    Good Luck mate!

    My brother, wow. Thorough. Raw. Positive. Negative. This video really had it all. Spending as much time as you have (which isn't much in the grand scheme but certainly more than a 30 minute demo ride like what I do) has really allowed you to share some really great observations. I loved the variety from positives to negatives. This came off as very honest and real. I certainly appreciate that as I'm sure others who are looking at this bike will appreciate it even more.
    From your social media pics, I know that you've changed out the mirrors by now. How are they?
    Oh, and lastly. The camera angles...LOVED THEM! That rear suspension shot...oh man, I was hoping for more! I know it is a whole lot more work to include these but wow, it was great (you've got to have more action cameras than me for sure!)

    • @RobAshMotoVlogs

      Thanks for the positive and complementary comments mate.
      I did a similar review vid for my Honda NC a little while back and remembered how disappointed I was in it. I missed out so many aspects I should have covered but simply didn't prepare before recording the vid. I was determined not to make the same mistakes on this one.
      I changed a lot more than just the mirrors mate. I'm trying to get out to make a vid covering all the mods I did, but with personal commitments, home decorating and basic crappy weather, it's just not happening right now. Soon, hopefully.
      I'm really glad you liked the extra angles I added in this one mate, I just thought it would add a little interest. They were also a bit of an experiment for upcoming vids I want to do. I'll take your positive reaction as the go-ahead for those vids ;o)
      Confession time. I actually recorded all those extra shots with one camera, my chin cam, the GoPro4 Session. I recorded the dialogue version of the vid first, then pulled over several times, placing the camera on different sections of the bike each time. Then I simply edited it all together. ;o)
      Thanks for the comment mate, much appreciated.

    I guess all Ducati clutches are like that, because I've heard it mentioned a million times. Anyway, great bike. I'm glad you are getting some sunshine to ride in.

    • @RobAshMotoVlogs
      @RobAshMotoVlogs  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm just glad the 848 doesn't have a dry clutch like the 1098, that must be a nightmare.
      Cheers mate. We've been getting some fantastic weather of late...long may it continue.

  • @Scoottoots

    You're going to have some fun on that bike, Rob. That's Some descent torque going on there. Maybe the slow speed control issue is related to its fairly high compression ratio. looking forward to more.

    • @RobAshMotoVlogs
      @RobAshMotoVlogs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I already am mate. ;o)
      Clutch work fixes the low speed stuttering, but I'd expect to be able to ride at about 7 or 8 mph without needing to clutch. It's possibly down to the fact that she's not run-in yet. We'll see.
      Cheers mate.

  • @That_Paul_Guy
    @That_Paul_Guy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had one of those for a short while, power was very manageable yet very fun to ride and a drop dead gorgeous bike. As I recall, the front end came up quite easily too. I've got an older video on my channel of the Termignonis. It's a cell phone video but sounds decent enough. Enjoy the new bike, Ducati has a great product!

    • @RobAshMotoVlogs
      @RobAshMotoVlogs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You sure can have a lot of fun on these things. I keep taking a glance at the speedo to discover I'm doing 80mph in a 30mph area. Strange that. ;o)
      I'm not a wheeie bloke to be honest, too worried about what might happen if things go wrong.
      Cheers mate.

    • @That_Paul_Guy
      @That_Paul_Guy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not necessarily a wheelie guy on purpose but when passing slower cars in the mountains, that front end can start rising on you if you grab too much throttle.

      Thanks a lot mate. I thought the extra points of view would add a little interest. I've been wanting to film the rear shock on operation ever since I got the bike, I just thought it would be cool to watch it work.

      So true mate, so true. Crazy speeds are so over rated. I went out at 5 in the morning just the other day, no traffic at all, and I just tootled about at walking pace for the most part. I noticed more of my surroundings that morning than I ever have before. The bike is the enjoyment, not the speeds it can do.

    • @RobAshMotoVlogs
      @RobAshMotoVlogs  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stuart Blakey
      Holy crap, the f4 is one hell of a bike!
      But there is something very special about the Streetfighter. As soon as I laid hands on mine there was an instant attachment.
      I was a little worried the 848 would be too small an engine for me, but the power is still there and so usable, no regrets for me either.
      And crazily enough, after all the bikes I've owned, the Fighter is actually the most comfortable over distance! I get next to no fatigue from riding it.
      Thanks for the compliment mate. And thanks so much for commenting.

    • @stuartblakey1606
      @stuartblakey1606 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rob Ash comfort was something the mv never had and was the main reason I got the 848, I looked at a monster s4rs but think I made the right choice. I'll keep my eyes peeled for ya, it's sounds like you're a northeast lad too!

    • @RobAshMotoVlogs
      @RobAshMotoVlogs  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had my eye on A Monster too, but as soon as I clapped eyes on the Streetfighter it was the only bike for me. I originally wanted the 1098 but there was nothing of good quality on offer. Since getting the 848 I've heard the 1098 can be very twitchy and a little clunky, especially with the dry clutch.

    New music on the intro! Wait, is this the Ducati Diaries series? Either way I enjoy it.
    You got the sniffles, mate?
    LOL she's a beauty of a bike, mate!
    Nice camera angles, very clever.
    A very thorough initial impression, methodical even.
    I wonder if because you're leaned forward with more weight over the bars is what makes the steering sensitive? Or maybe I took that wrong.
    I like the exhaust the way it sounds over the computer, but admittedly it is thru your Sena which can mute allot.

    • @RobAshMotoVlogs
      @RobAshMotoVlogs  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice of you to notice mate. I actually have two intros, both with the same visuals but each with different music. ;o) Yep, this is the Ducati Diaries series mate.
      I've just gotten over a really bad cold. You noticed that?
      She certainly is mate. I'm very proud. :o)
      Cheers mate. I thought the extra angles might add a little more interest.
      I tried my best to cover as many points about the bike as I could. I remember doing the NC review and missing out so much stuff, I didn't want to do the same thing here.
      I don't think body position is causing the front end sensitivity mate, because it only happens at high speeds on long straights. I've taken country bends at over 70mph and the bike is utterly stable. I'm going to ask about it when she goes in for her first service.
      Yeah, the sound is very suppressed over the Sena. It's not really bad, and the pipes look great, but the Termignoni's are just so damn cool! ;o)

    Hey man, thanks for your comparison between this and the Speed Triple.. those are exactly the two options I'm looking at at the moment (2011 Speed Triple). I'm going to have to test-ride them both, but where the Triumph tempts me because of its upright position, the Ducati wins in the looks department. It's going to be a difficult choice!

    • @RobAshMotoVlogs
      @RobAshMotoVlogs  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there mate. It's my pleasure, I'm glad you got something out of this.
      In all honesty both bikes are very comfortable, but I think the 848 edges it. I've never owned a bike that I haven't felt uncomfortable riding on relatively long distances...until the Streetfighter. No aching wrists, no numb bum, no back pain!
      I can't vouch for the later models of the Speed triple, I had a 2006 and a 2007 both around a year old when I got them if I remember right, but I can only imagine they've gotten even better.
      What I loved about those early Speed Triples was the no-messin' rawness of style and power. Those things hated riding with the front wheel on the ground. And they were so stable they would go around corners on the back wheel. I know this because I've done it more than once, completely by accident. I would love to own one of those things again!
      The Triumph is bags of fun from when you kick the stand up until you kick it back down. And even then the smile it gives you will last for a good hour afterwards.
      The Ducati is fun and incredibly usable, but quite a bit tamer. But, the class factor of the Ducati is second to none. Everyone knows what a Ducati is, and everyone just has to look. You just feel like a million quid riding one of these red beauties.
      Best of luck with your decision mate, and please drop a line to let me know what you chose.
      All the best,
      Rob.

    Ha awesome accent man, took a couple secs to tune into it but success! Makes you pay even more attention to what you are saying which isn't a bad thing.
    Looking at one on Friday! Very excited.
    One q, how tall are you?

    • @RobAshMotoVlogs
      @RobAshMotoVlogs  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kyle Farmer
      Sorry about the accent mate. I try my best to keep it under control but it's not always easy. Haha.
      Best of luck on Friday. these bikes are great fun to ride.
      I'm 5'8" and the bike fits me perfectly. It's a really narrow bike, because it's an L twin, so you can keep your legs quite together at a standstill so it's easier to reach the ground with your feet.
      All the best bud.

    • @KyleF1981
      @KyleF1981 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No need to apologise man, I think your accent is really cool.
      That's great to hear, I'm 5ft9 and wondered as it was a tall bike if that would be an issue.
      I just watched your mods video, exactly the same mods I would like to get! So will be coming back to that video next weekend hopefully to have a closer look and to start sourcing the bits and pieces.
      Take care!

    Great first impression review.
    I did one on mine and thought it was kinda useless and that the 2 year / 40000Km one would obviously be more useful, but I still get comments on the first one, and I guess first impressions are a really valuable thing to share.
    That light front end... hmm, I don't truly understand suspension but you're probably right that something could be done there.
    I'd be a bit lost without strong brakes... been used to Hondas ;-)
    Heavy clutch... yeah that sounds bad - not hydraulic then? We discovered that adjusting the angle of Wifey's clutch vastly improved the feel, actually lowered the angle a little.
    Is that the stock exhaust? It does sound awful on the mic, I'd be tempted to use a back-pack mic and really pick it up - but then I don't seem to mind endless time editing stuff together, LOL.
    Was great to hear all your impressions mate, especially as you have a right decent amount of experience on many bikes to draw on - I picked up a lot.
    RSM8.

    • @RobAshMotoVlogs
      @RobAshMotoVlogs  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks a lot mate.
      I guess if people are looking into buying the same bike it's the initial impressions that catch the possible downsides best. Let's face it, if you've still got a bike after 40000km you must be pretty happy with the thing so you can kinda guess what the video content is going to be.
      My whole Ducati Diaries Idea has pretty much fallen flat on it's face . Hahahaha.
      The 1098 version of the Streetfighter was fitted with a steering damper, so I'm wondering if there's still a little bit of cause and effect going on even with the 848. There is a damper available for my bike so that might be the way to go.
      Oh believe me the brakes are strong mate, they're just a little too progressive for my liking considering the speeds this thing can get to so quickly.
      Yep, got a hydraulic clutch. I know only too well because when I was fitting my new bits last week I managed to run the line almost dry. Pig of a job getting the thing back to pressure. I think the stiffness comes from the clutch itself, since all Ducatis seem to suffer from it.
      Yep, stock exhaust at the mo. Termignoni conversion is crazy money. :o(
      I don't mind editing, I just hate back-packs. Haha.
      Thanks very much for that compliment mate, much appreciated. Unfortunately some seem to be having a hard time understanding me because of my accent. Downer.
      And by the way mate, let me take this opportunity to apologise for not getting to your vids lately, I feel guilty as all hell about it, but I genuinely have so little time right now. I'm hardly watching any Vloggers at the mo. :'o(

      Rob Ash I hear you about the accent... at least I think I do... what was that you said?? ;-)
      No need to apologise mate, it's the same for us all - we truly follow so many great channels it's impossible to keep up and all it takes is a bit of extra stuff going on and I find I'm even missing some of my favourites. YT is for fun IMO so no big deal if real life takes over :)

    Agree with pretty much everything you said. What do you think about the heat on your thighs. I've noticed the hotter it gets here in Wisconsin the more of an issue it's becoming. I have been trying to avoid any city riding if possible because the heat is pretty bad. Other than that the bike has been amazing. Also agree on the sound it's a good sound but not great but I think ternis will fix that.

    • @RobAshMotoVlogs
      @RobAshMotoVlogs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't had any problems with engine heat as yet. But then I'd imagine our temps in the UK are a lot lower than yours. Plus I haven't done any long rides or heavy traffic on it yet. I have noticed a lot of heat coming off it when I pull her into the garage. I guess that's why they put a temp gauge right in the middle of the dash. Haha.
      Cheers mate.
