Our reporters returned to Ireland, where the remains of 800 children who died at the Tuam Mother and Baby home in County Galway were found in a mass grave. Our team met with survivors of the home, who told them of their pain and of rebuilding their stolen childhoods.
Imagine a world where you were separated by force from your mother, simply because you were born out of wedlock. A world where you were called a bastard and she a whore. A world where you were thrown into a facility run by nuns, where food was scarce and where you didn't know what Christmas was. A world where "home" was synonymous with hell.
In the town of Tuam, Western Ireland, that world was a reality for tens of thousands of mothers and their babies, born between the 1920s and the 1960s.
In 2014, Catherine Corless, an amateur historian, revealed the result of her research: nearly 800 babies were denied proper burials and their bodies were located in the chambers of a sewage system, on the property of the former Mother and Baby home.
The investigation is still under way and its findings are due to be revealed in 2019. But many in Tuam blame the state and the Bon Secours Sisters, who ran the home at the time.
FRANCE 24's Aurore Cloe Dupuis and Julie Dungelhoeff met with survivors of the home, who demand justice for those whom they call the forgotten Angels of Tuam.

Every Irish person looked down on unmarried mothers and illegitimate children. Their own family were too ashamed to protect them. The fathers of these babies just washed their hands off it. They are all equally guilty.

Yes that is true. I was one of them illegitimate children born in an unmarried mothers home, and now to add insult to past injury this country proposes to kill their unwanted, not yet born children.

Not just in Ireland and not just by Catholics In those days it was shameful for any single girl to fall pregnant and they were often hidden by their families and forced to give up the baby.
      Now days they have abortions.
      When will the killing end.

No indeed, but it takes two to be impregnated the reponsibility is on both but as you say men dodged a lot of it for many varied reasons I am not judging here, it was like that for ceturies and I guess both knew the risks invovled but human nature is...and sex drive is strong etc etc thats why most societies east and west for centuries developed strict rules to protect virgins and women in various ways it did not just happen in Ireland the fact that Ireland was so impoverished made the situation so very much worse.Maybe those Irish women wanted those babies , maybe so did the fathers, Irish love their children and families but maybe they just could not cope, maybe those nuns thought they were doing the right thing looking after all those "unwanted: or unable to be cared for babies," maybe they and the Church were trapped in a over zealous mindset of shame or of having failed and sinned against the rules they set to protect women and they had to blame someone, who knows, its easy from our pill and abortion mindset to judge in our free and easy going age.and be outragesd by what happened in which case we should be outraged all around the world and for centuries to see what human kind has done to babies (women exposing babies to die in Sparta etc etc etc ) child sacrifice Lets be out raged by it all and not have selective rage.Shame on us all.

      Charity Comments
      Your comment is very uncharitable.
Who is "promoting promiscuity" and who is "condoning the slaughter of preborn children resulting from their female promiscuity"?
      Nobody, that's who.
Who are you to judge and condemn anybody?
You will never meet or know the people you so easily mock , you do not know their individual circumstances, you do not know the reasons they might or might not that or not take the lawful abortion option.
Are you saying you prefer to live in a society were State and Church conspire to make female slaves of those you undeserved morally arrogance opinion are "sinners"?
Are you saying you have right to force unwilling pregnant females to give unwanted birth to unwanted babies?
Are you saying you should then have the right to take that unwanted child away from the birth mother and sell that forced in being baby to the highest bidder for profit?
Are you saying you should have the blatantly corrupt brass necked gall to make slaves of those you forced into giving unwanted birth to make more profit?
If you are then you must be a truly degenerate barbaric swine.
How dare you assume your sick morality gives you the right to dictate to others how they should live and what choices should be lawfully open to them.
Their private lives are none of your dammed business.
      SHAME ON YOU.

I have to agree with Patrick. There's something fundamentally wrong with punishing sin by treating someone with no responsibility for the situation (the child) like a sub-human, while letting one of the sinners (the father) go with no consequences what so ever.
Not that I condone what happened to the mothers. - But at least it fit into that brutal logic.
But that's all the Abrahamic religions for you.

We talk about Nazis and the attocities of the SS...but we forget our own history and attrocities as easily. Parents should educate their children not turning a blind eye. young irish are not tought about their country's history...social class issues of the past..expotation of the poor and THIS...christian-class system...if you were a women of the lowest rank and got pregnant you were by yourself...turning to your church and community to be told you were discrace and give up your child to a 'concentration' house run by the church AND state.

    • @townsin11
      @townsin11 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

We live in a world where our Governments are more like the Nazis than any other institute since 1945. Our Country's history. You would swear there were nothing but institutes on every corner and children were being abused left right and center. Childrens institutions were run in many countries and not by the Catholic Church. Nobody has ever said that the Church murdered any children.People were abused by Nuns and Priests and they should be brought to Justice. But it was 10% of the Clergy that did this. Yet we tar them all with the same brush!. Many children died back then from many diseases and not in Institutions but all over the country. There are worse atrocities happening today than in any other time. Abortion being the biggest Nazi atrocity and continues today and being the worse genocide of the human being. Vaccination s of our children another atrocity that is going on today causing many illnesses, run by the Pharmaceutical industry and sanctioned by Governments. As long as they can find another distraction and bring up another scandal by the Catholic Church (even if it is not actual truth) then they can continue to carry out their own agenda without fear of reprisals. The next generation of children will not have the same thought as ourselves. The new HPV vaccine for our daughters is the next Population control technique by the above. It wil stop many women having babies in years to come. In fact young girls are already having problems wit their ovaries. These companies probably did not expect this to happen so soon but it is happening.

we kill every time we eat something.
prochoice sees fetuses as parasites, but prolife sees born children as parasites. no nation on earth treats children well. it's easy to care about a fetus that will never ask a single thing from anyone, but an actual child will demand much.

    • @margaretjohnson6259
      @margaretjohnson6259 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

prolife doesn't love children more than any one else does.
since most abortions are done long before a fetus can perceive anything there is no problem with pain. in the later abortions the fetus is killed before it is removed in pieces which is what your side WANTED when they got the less messy option made illegal.
i can guarantee you that very few women are blithe about getting an abortion. most of them think deeply about it before making a decision one way or the other. people have NO obligation to lend their bodies to someone else for the benefit of someone else.
i can't make you give me a kidney even if i will die without out and no woman needs to lend her uterus to an unwanted fetus.

who said it was? miscarriage and stillbirth aren't safe and neither are genetic flaws or developmental flaws. nature doesn't care which fetus makes it or not, so why should women? conceptions fail to implant. embryos fail to develop. fetuses die in utero and may or may not miscarry. if a woman has an unwanted pregnancy she can so what nature does and end the pregnancy.
seems to me you might want to focus your real concern on the children that are actually here and now and needy, but that would mean YOU might have to take action. can't have that, can we?

It's amazing that I'm only one generation away from this type of child labor and abuse. In America my father and his brother were put in Foster Care by an Orphanage during WW2. His brother was fostered out to a religious family that weren't Catholic. They put him in a cage and forced him to peel potatoes all day. He was beat, fed in the cage, couldn't speak to their children. He was discovered one day when the matron of the orphanage came to do a wellness check.

This is so heartbreaking! I feel so bad for all those babies, mothers and adults that made it. I think the Catholic church should purchase all the property back and identify all those children. Give those babies a proper burial and show some respect. They should turn the site to a memorial and pay compensation to the survivors!

The cess pit where the bodies are buried, is just a patch of grass,it wouldn't even neccesitate purchase as I'm quite sure its a crime scene, surely no one is allowed dispose of bodies in an unrecognised place. What is left of those children should be exhumed, the ones identified by DNA returned to their families and reburied, the unidentified ones then buried together in a proper buriel ground with a plaque carrying all their names and age, only fair to them.

This horrific practice was brought to the U.S. by Catholic Nuns. State-sponsored here as well. Many of these homes performed laundry services for the wealthy and these women and children were sent into a lifetime of servitude doing laundry 24/7 for their wealthy clients.

Its enough to punish the mother because they deemed her a sinner. but why punish an innocent child and why wasn't the father deemed a sinner and punished. Such a hard time of hardship and poverty is no excuse for such behaviour by authorities. A bucket of soap and water cost nothing but instead the children were neglected and not respected by putting these innocents in mass graves as if they did not exist.

964 skeletons were recovered from the Bon secours garden in Tuam. Over a period of 70 years or so.When you have an ancient organisation like the church I think there's a lot to be said for mediating authories to inspect standards in these places. Even in faith schools today left to their own devices abuse can occur.

Givernment Inspectors did call to the bon secour home, on at least one occasion, included in the report was a comment on one little girl " she was emaciated and had a ferocious appetite" that speaks for itself, but the report was never followed up,that man was wasting his time. Remember the convent owned land as well, so with the 30 shillings a week they were allowed for each child thryshould have been adequately if not well fed,in another orphanage a visiting body of people called at Christmas bringing loads of toys ( related by a survivor) but when they had left, the toys were taken away from them and never seen again, which to me seems anact of spite, what did the nuns do with those toys, hardly given to their own families,.

In Ireland, but not elsewhere. How about children sent out to places like Australia to work unpaid on farms, to build the orphanages that would house them, again unpaid, then on to erect other buildings for the church unpaid, and all the while being sodomised by bent priests, whose disgusting abuse was covered up by « mother church » gut wrenching filth, which hadn’t even begun to see the light of day, until the 90’s because the victims were silenced by shame. Abuse denied by the church to protect itself, the sods who serve it, and of course, the bottom line, $$$$$$£££££££.

Cruelty was also rife in boarding schools as well, but not so blatantly, nor was it allowed to become too remarkable because the kids would tell their parents. Letter writing home was done on Friday evening, and the envelopes left unsealed so the nuns could read the letters written. If you said too much you were punished, and the letter had to be rewritten. But the joy of it all was that you could whine about it when you went home at end of term, not that anything much would be done about it.

The nuns must have been fantastic as I had great life there (my mom said I was very happy child...big smiles..big cavaties cuz I liked sweets.
Rather than being "sold for profit" quickly it took one and a half years with constant letter writing (I have letters) and a mother to be who taught special ed and father to be who was a lawyer and two uncles who were priest...yet the process was still long. Thats my experience so lets not condemn the whole idea and put a negative spin on nuns. I wish girls in the US had such a system. A friend of mine on disability had very rough time when she got pregnant....naturally I helped support her cuz deadbeat guys fled...and I got criticized for helping. So thats my one pence comment.
