I remember buying a butchered Knuck frame for twenty bucks. I stretched that frame's down tubes and seat post one inch to accept a Pan/Shovel engine. I left the half-inch rake in the neck. After a lot of grinding and welding (in a jig), everything worked out swell. Good luck on the project.

A few years back, my pal came across a set of STD Panhead cylinder heads. Dave Mackie's crew ported/flowed them. Furthermore, a street performance valve job was done up. I've always liked the way STD made the 3 point mounts on the exhaust ports -- a lot more efficient than the old stock slip on and clamp design. I also remember when Randy Smith (Custom Cycle Engineering) developed those finned valve covers. That frame is coming along nicely. Best -- W in Cleveland, OH.

A very good reference book on doing frame and Harley custom mods in general is "Custom Chopper Cookbook" by Mike Geokan & Mike Arman. c1981. I bought mine in 1982. It may be out of print now. Back in the days before the internet you could mail order a gold mine of "old school" information in the back of Easyriders magazine. I have been running a 1949 80" Pan with STD heads and a 1946-47 knucklehead frame for many years now. A friend of mine made the mistake of telling me it wouldn't work. I'm an Engineer and with a "flame wrench" and a hammer I can do anything. I am almost 66 and I've been riding Pans since 1971.

I had a Kunkle frame to fit a pan, I regretted the butcher job on the frame. The worst thing I did was to get a 45 springer on a wishbone frame we butchered a VL frame and fit the gusset on the pan frame. The pan frame's gusset was already butchered and spread to make a chopper. I like choppers but I ride bobbers. I like a bike ready to run from the police on!!

Maybe I'm over thinking it but did you have to modify the mounts at all with the ~3/8 difference knuck to pan? I guess I'll find out when I try to shove a pan/shovel into a vtwin 41 frame here in a couple of weeks. A little experienced advice never hurts though.

How about the artistic tank above the lathe ..the chopper forks in the corner in front of the weld table ..tall ape hangers under the bench...
Whats the plan to now reinforce what you've cut out ..???
