    Hey Al, awesome piece of turning. I'm just getting back into turning again and watching you has helped me with that... Thank you for sharing your work!
    I'm in Louisiana and couldn't agree with your comment more that you don't have to have exotic wood to make a beautiful piece. I was thrilled when you first held this piece of wood up as I've often thought of doing a piece like this. I also like what you said about going with your first instinct on deciding how to approach a new piece to be turned. Thanks again for posting, I'm looking forward to seeing how that other piece turns out. 😎👍

    • @AlFurtado
      @AlFurtado  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching my friend. The way I see it is if you start with an ugly piece you can only improve the outcome. if it's pretty piece to start with we can only modify it.

    What a great find Al. The centre looks like there's a critter of some sort burrowing itself in to hide. The wonder of nature. I recently was given two twelve inch blanks of ash by a local farmer. The first one fought me every step of the way & ended up not worthy of the time & effort. I'm hoping for better results with the second piece. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose. Glad to see you won.
    Great piece my friend.
    Regards as always from the UK 🇬🇧.

    Respects! Excellent turn. You have a great eye for potential results from the woods you choose. I could walk around forests all day long looking for that one piece. I know it when I see it. Some of the time I have gone back to old farms and cut out the old stump they used for wood shed chopping blocks. One mans trash, as they say. Thank you for sharing your art and passion with the world. We are better people for having a place like this for craftsmen like yourself to come and show us what you do.

    Amazing work Al. You are a VERY brave turner that piece was pretty dangerous. I was holding my breath thinking that dead branch would crumble and let go in a big way. But as usual, you mastered it! Congratulations.

    • @AlFurtado
      @AlFurtado  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching my friend. It's odd. Perhaps a little challenging piece but never felt it to be dangerous. Fear is a roadblock on achievements. We just need to respect the tool and know limitations and follow lots of common sense.

    It's funny you said "...the wood tells you what it's going to be." I just told my son that yesterday when I was showing him to turn something on the lathe. I explained that most woods have they're own natural shapes and distinct grain patterns which play a role in its shaping. Most of the time I have an idea of what I want to make clear in my head, but it doesn't really turn out that way. Haha. If you use a piece of wood that has no real character to it like bass wood, which is what I used yesterday, you can actually turn the shape you looking for because it doesn't really have any good characteristics or neat grain patterns. Nice video bud.

    • @AlFurtado
      @AlFurtado  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching my friend. 90% of the time the wood decides and the other 10% we excel in our imagination LOL. Good teaching there my friend

    YOU'RE BRAVE AND GIFTED!!! WHAT A GORGEOUS BOWL YOU'VE CREATED FROM NATURE'S WONDERS!!! I TOO WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO FIND SOME SPALTED SLABS CUT FROM AN UNKNOWN TREE SPECIES!!! SO I'M TURNING END-GRAIN AND WAS WONDERING IF YOU COULD PLEASE TELL ME WHAT YOU USE TO HELP YOU SAND IT TO SUCH A SMOOTH FINISH?! THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR TALENT AND TIME!!! TAKE CARE MY FRIEND!!!

    • @AlFurtado
      @AlFurtado  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching my friend. first made sure your cuts are as clean as you can get them. no ridges. Sand with power sander 80 grit even some with the lathe stopped until you feel it looks good than continue with the other grits not as much sanding by then. 80g. 120g, 220g, 320g than fine steel wool. be sure to use some sort of sealer after that or a grit finish. IK uses Yorkshire grit for that but had good luck with Minwax sanding sealer as well.

    Glad I came across your site. Down to earth explanation of your process and a large variety of challenging projects for someone with my experience as a very (very new wantabe) turner. especially someone with many tools but all cheap as I use none of them very much. I love the thought of people drooling over my projects. Probably will never happen but ----- no harm in dreaming!!!! Can't wait to learn more about the "turning" world and what I can create from the woods of Eastern Canada. Cheers!!!

      Thanks for watching my friend. Compare the blank to a piece or a shape that you like. See if that shape is in there. most of the time it is. we just expose it.

    i am a new turner, my wood is often fallen dead wood and roadside pickups. I like what you did, Did you do anything to fix the bark? So fa I am sticking to smaller pieces.

    • @AlFurtado
      @AlFurtado  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks again. I am not sure if I had to do anything to this bark. I do uses CA glue on many pieces on the bark either to stiffen it up or get a good bind if I see separation.

    Nice bit of work there Al, you have a good eye for the cuts. What did you finish the piece with as I still have problems getting a good finish . Oil or polyurethane or al's magic mix ?

      Thanks for watching my friend. I am trying to remember what I used on this one. Are you going to make me watch my own video again to figure it out? LOL I do believe I used OB shine juice and just dabbed it heavy on the bark area.

    Greetings from England
    I like it
    I like watching these tutorials
    It's not the biggest machine shop...their not the biggest machine tools...
    But I've been quietly watching Mr. Furtado's stuff for some time now...its the delivery of these videos...the skills on display...the advice...the encouragement...
    Outstanding work from an artist

      Rebel Turner
      I've got 3 wood lathes:
      I've a pattern makers lathe... probably about 1900-1910...thats a 7" swing...theres no makers name on it
      I've another that needs some work...its just a standard lathe is that...again about 1900...7" swing...6ft bed
      And I've another...10" swing over the tool rest...16" swing over the gap bed...its a 3/4 ton brute with a 7ft bed...theres no makers plate on it but it's almost certainly a WILSON of Leeds...it'll be 1920s will that...
      I've a nice old bandsaw...WATTS of Sheffield...24" wheels...early 1920s
      I've a WADKIN EZ...
      Thats a spindle moulder...its an early one...again 1920s-1930s
      Their all for lineshaft drive...
      They want restoring...their currently in storage in a shipping container...
      I'm going to make a start on some of this stuff shortly...i'll need to drag it out of storage...😉
      I think your stuff that you make is great...i like the way those bowls turn out...with all the bark and the natural shape and grain...
      I'm not a wood Turner...i was a plater welder for years before I had enough and went back to college...served my time again and went sparkying...
      But I collect vintage & antique machine tools as a hobby...I've 30 odd now...i gets em whenever they turn up...
      I'm going to start having a go wood turning n all that lot... 😉

    Very interesting, indeed! As a forester, I stared at that stub for a minute, and it came to me; someone cut the branch off too long, then the branch died, the tree continued to grow. Ok right there the normal sequence stopped and the unusual sequence took over: the branch did not rot off as would be the normal way, but just dried, while the tree grew more. Usully the tree would grow over the stub, and it would have looked like a burl; but this stubborn branch would not rot, making this anomally.

    That is an amazing piece of wood, my friend. And you honored its growth by keeping it true to its own form. Absolutely beautiful piece. Do you ever take a picture of the before and after in case you decide to sell the piece, the new caretaker of this art can display the before picture with the bowl.
