  • Bringing you a new pink haired yandere, Happy sugar life tricks you into thinking not a lot is going on, but with commentary on love sprinkled in with some yandere crazies brought to you by Satou, this anime gets pretty underrated.

    I feel so bad for both the brother and shio. The brother may not have been perfect, but he truly cared for and loved his sister, and just wanted to save her from being kidnapped, to bring their family back together. He sacrificed everything for her, by staying to get abused by the father, only for her due to Stockholm syndrome, reject him outright in favor of her kidnapper. Not only that, but the one human relation he ended up forming, the one bond he had with shoko,was snuffed out by satou when she murdered her, for no crime other than she didn't trust her.

    • @RylieJones09
      @RylieJones09 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I don't think it was Stockholm's syndrome, more likely the first time she's actually experienced love that was equally returned to her in a safer environment where she isn't actively getting abused, verbally not physically. Although the brother does love shio alot I'm going to assume her memories have been tainted by her mother and father so she no longer feels safe around them. I still do feel had for the brother because he went through so much to get shio but she still had a better life with her new family. Also the friend wasn't killed because she wasn't trusted, it's because she already alerted somebody (the brother) shio's location which endangered shio, probably activating the violent side of the main character. I fully agree with everything else you said tho.

    This is probably an unpopular opinion among the BPD community, but as a Borderline myself, I would actually like to see yanderes more closely mirror what it’s like to be on the giving end of a favorite person attachment. Yanderes serve both as a relatable trope I can look to in times of needing to feel seen, and a warning of what my behavior could end up looking like if I allow myself to give in to the self-destructive impulses people with my disorder have. I want to see yandere characters who genuinely appear as the most caring and loving partner on the surface, because that is often what we appear as and what we are earnestly trying to be. Shion Sonozaki was a great yandere character because she felt extremely real to me. This is probably because the author of her home series was a social worker and based her off of a person with BPD they actually knew. I wish yanderes were based more off of real people and their experiences and less off of other yanderes.

      The only thing with this is that Shion isn't a yandere. She may be seen as one in the anime, but her actions were caused by Hinamizawa syndrome.
      It's been a while since I read the visual novel or even interacted with the Higurashi community, so my explanation might be off, but it was explained that Shion was actually Mion, or the older sister when she was born, amd Mion was the younger sister, or Shion. Both of them always loved dressing up as each other and fooling people by acting like the other. They ended up switching places on the day Shion was supposed to be tattooed on the back, with the demon tattoo you see on Mion in the first opening. So basically, Mion, or Shion, I should say, ended up getting tattooed, and actually "becoming Mion".
      Her death in the visual novel, after stabbing Keiichi, was her, the entire time, she was wishing she never switched with her sister the day of the tattoo. She started to think right before she died, that she should have never been born.
      Yes, she did love Satoshi to an extent, but her love is genuine, as seen in Minagoroshi-hen. Some of her actions were because she loved Satoshi, but while she had the syndrome, it was amplified. I'm pretty sure you could find a better answer on r/HigurashiNoNakaKoroNi though. As I said, it's been a while since I've seen the source material for the anime, so some of the things I said are wrong, most likely.

    I've noticed that Japanese media seems to be more open to portraying female-on-male sexual assault, and they often depict the traumatic aftermath of such incidents. It's intriguing how they address this issue more openly than we do in American media. It makes me wonder why Japan appears to be taking male sexual assault more seriously in their storytelling than we do in the United States. Could it be that they recognize the importance of acknowledging and discussing such topics, or is there something culturally specific that drives this portrayal? I'm curious to learn more about the cultural and social factors that may contribute to this difference in representation and awareness.

    I really enjoyed watching this anime. It's one of the most thought provoking ones I've seen in a while because it's so hard to figure out who's the "bad guy", or what I would do in that situation. Satou is doing everything she can to make Shio happy and safe, but in the worst ways possible. I also admire the way it demonstrates how abuse is cyclic, and how fast it can spiral out of control. I can understand the subject matter/premise turning people off by just reading a summary, but it's def worth to power through and watch.

    This anime/manga is a masterpiece imo and definitely doesn't deserve that much hate. I mean if it's a psychological thriller and it has girls love tag with a loli on its cover, then you must expect something disturbing and some people criticize it about it's being disturbing lmao.
    I personally love how it literally makes you think about the meaning of "love" unlike generic romance animes, its love concept is so unique. Also there are lots of symbolism there about all other emotions that people are missing because they watch it like "ew psycho pedo doing bad stuff" lol.
    Characters are all well written and have unique personalities, I write short stories and some of them published in literature magazines so I'm kinda experienced with writing stuff. I can never come close to HSL's level of character creating, it's something out of this world. Would say it's even better than Monster etc masterpieces.
    HSL is build on a "opposition/antinomy" theme (idk the right word) and they made it even more in view/foreground in anime. I mean color schemes changing almost every scene made me feel the chaotic and ill psychology she lives in, and that's not an easy thing to achieve. It's starting with the ending is a popular thing in these type of drama animes, like SukaSuka did, it works for some reason. Would prefer the manga start though. Except these, nothing much changed so there is no problem with the adaptation imo. Voice actings and musics were also amazing. I mean it wasn't better than the Manga, but still on par or slightly worse. Both are true masterpieces.
    I kinda suck talking about these stuff in EN but you know what I mean. Couldn't agree with a youtube video more, Great job bro!

    At first I thought Shio was just one of those characters that everyone in the show loves for no reason. Yet she doesnt really do anything and we the audience wouldn't really feel much about her or have any important views about her character.
    But ohhh boy nearing the end of the anime/her arc was so surprising. Of course i expected her backstory to be like that, but slowly our view or thoughts of "Oh i wish Asahi could find and save her" "I hope she remembers soon" "I hope she sees Satou's true colors nd realize blah blah" are just crushed. Because then we see that the trauma and this whole experience may have affected her more than we thought. Its caused her to have this warped perspective on happiness and love. We see that she's starting to be almost obsessively 'in love' with Sato (altho not sure whether its platonic, familial, romantic, motherly. Everyone has different opinions."
    And we also start to understand that all of this is because they both wanted what ever they were missing in life. For Satou, true love, someone that actually loved her and cared abt her unlike those boys or her aunt, the purity from her past before she was 'corrupted' by her aunt, and the innocence that she lacked in childhood.
    For Shio, a family that would never hurt her, being able to trust someone, a person she can rely on, the feeling of being safe and protected. We can see that there were many times where Shio would compare Shio to her mom/family.

    This anime highlights a crucial aspect of human emotions: our often complicated understanding of romantic love. While people tend to grasp the concepts of parental love and friendship quite easily, romantic love remains elusive to many. The reason behind this disparity lies in the nature of these different forms of affection.
    Parental love and friendship are relatively straightforward to comprehend. From early childhood, individuals experience the love of their parents and form bonds of friendship. These relationships serve as foundational experiences that help people recognize and appreciate parental love and friendship. Moreover, the intensity of parental love and the lack of complete blindness in friendship love make them easier to understand.
    On the other hand, romantic love typically emerges later in a person's development, often during the teenage years or adulthood. Unlike the familiarity of parental love or the clarity of friendship, romantic love can be more elusive. Individuals may have witnessed romantic love in movies or formed close bonds with others, but fully grasping the depth and complexity of this kind of love can prove challenging.
    Moreover, those who haven't grown up in households with healthy two-parent relationships may struggle even more to understand romantic love. A healthy example of a two-parent household can provide children with a valuable perspective on what romantic love should look like, helping them navigate this intricate form of affection as they grow older.
    As a Christian, I've found that the Bible contains verses that provide a profound understanding of love. In these verses, it becomes apparent that God intended for a two-parent marriage. This design is rooted in the practicality of raising children, where the responsibility is shared between two parents. This way, when one parent is at work, the other can be present at home, providing guidance and support to the children. It alleviates the burden that a single parent might face, ensuring that children are not left to fend for themselves.
    A two-parent household, particularly in a romantic relationship, holds significant value for children. You might question why these two individuals must be in a romantic relationship, and why marriage seems to intertwine with romance. It's possible that God intended romance to be a genuine part of human life because it is a beautiful and meaningful aspect of our existence. However, He wanted to ensure that there was a healthy portrayal of romance, especially for the sake of children.
    In ancient times, there were no TVs, video games, computers, or even written language to provide examples of romantic love. The primary models children had were their parents. As societies developed and people began writing and creating visual depictions of romance, these representations weren't always healthy. Unhealthy romantic relationships and cultural structures existed, and children needed better examples.
    Enter the idea of a loving, romantically involved parental unit. The purpose of this concept was for two parents to genuinely love each other, not just marry for convenience or financial gain. Their love for each other would be evident through their care, selflessness, and willingness to sacrifice for one another. This would create a healthy, non-toxic environment.
    The underlying message for children would be clear: This is what parents do, this is what romantic partners do, this is what love looks like, and this is what a healthy romantic relationship looks like. It would serve as an example for children, showing them the potential for love and demonstrating that they can aspire to have a loving spouse and enjoy the beauty of a healthy romance.

    This isn't a romance.. If it was then that would be saying that this is just a straight up p*dophilic film. There are heavy themes of trauma, abuse, etc. Everyone's actions can be explained... But it shouldn't be accepted. Especially Satou's. Satou is the view we're supposed to see this through. This is especially shown with the opening in the manga. In this Satou constantly wants to justify her actions, making everyone worse than herself. And yes her corrupt view of love can be explained by her aunt but, it shouldn't be excused by it. Satou not just manipulates Shio, she manipulates you. The reader or watcher. And that's the great thing about happy sugar life. It gets you to question yourself.
    The show is amazing, certain parts of it can only really be explained by the manga though. Definitely my favorite psychological horror thus far.

    When someone is kidnapped, it's common for people to elevate them to a high status, showering them with praise and fond memories. They become the subject of glowing admiration, often referred to as the moon or the guiding light. Similarly, when someone passes away, they are remembered as someone who brightened every room they entered, and people find countless reasons to celebrate their virtues. This happens because of the profound love and longing people feel for the missing or deceased person.
    In the case of the person in question, their current absence has placed them on an even higher pedestal. Their loved one doesn't know whether they are alive, well, or in danger. Consequently, they continuously express their admiration and longing, desperately holding onto hope. The reason behind this elevated pedestal is the immense distress caused by the uncertainty of their loved one's whereabouts. They firmly believe that once she is found, their family can reunite, and the distress that has weighed heavily on them will finally lift. The missing person's return would mean the restoration of their happiness and wholeness, as the distress stemming from her absence is something one cannot easily overcome until they are reunited.

    I just binged it over two days and liked it a lot. Great Trojan Horse of a name, eh? The whole show is about kids growing up with skewed, misguided perceptions of love and sexuality because of their parents and mentors failing them, basically generational trauma passed on rather than resolved, with sprinkles of religious themes and prostitution throughout. I loved the stylized presentations of pleasure as represented by sugar and different-colored shapes coupled with the dark glitchiness of evil or forgotten figures. The episode with the painter stands out in particular, how we never see his face and only hear his voice through garbled, glitched onscreen text. The charming, happy music played over objectively disturbing scenes of Satou and Shijo bonding or Tokyu fawning over Shijo sells the disturbing factor extremely effectively. Very wild, often upsetting ride.
    SPOILERS: I have very mixed feelings about the ending. Not because it's bad, but because it's very ironic and leaves you with a very hollow, ugly feeling inside. Satou essentially gets what she wants in the end, when she really shouldn't have. Even if she is the product of her crazy aunt, she is the most conniving, evil character in the whole show, more so even than her stalker teacher. Let's not forget she killed the artist and her only real friend Shoko, who genuinely wanted what was best for her. Perhaps the best scene in the series is when an ounce of humanity comes through to Satou: her lip trembles when she wipes away dried tears on Shoko's corpse. Deep down, I think she knew she was genuine, and if Shijo hadn't interrupted, there might have been some real introspection on her part. Alas, that tragically doesn't happen. Then in the very last scene, Satou has essentially cursed Shijo with the same "love" she had, where she cares for nothing else other than her lover, and the cycle of trauma continues unabated despite her brother and mother finally coming back to her. It leaves you with the same disgust as the ending of Psycho, where the last shot is of them hauling the car out of the mud to retrieve the stolen money.
    Happy Sugar Life is a tragedy. So many points throughout the show, you see where things could've gone differently, where you as a viewer HOPED they would go. Every child and teenager character is a sympathetic victim of the adults which tower over them and you find yourself rooting for them all, only for terrible fates to befall them all. Great anime, highly recommend.

    Guess we're saving the best episode unspoiled lol. In fact, my friend as the anime was airing posted a screenshot of Sato choking her out on the floor and it got me HARD and CURIOUS and binged the thing right away.

    this manga is like Elfen lied... only few people really understand the story and what the author wanted to explain.
    Most of youtubers/ reviewers only describe the weird relationship and violence, reading this work at the first degree. But if you have good analytic sense, you can understand many more....
    Happy sugar life talks about how love is different for everyone. There s not only 1 definition of what love is and everyone involve their own perversion in their own version of love.
    It talks about how adult transform innocent child into another perverted person (eg : the auntie made Satou chan, and Satou chan made Shio)

    I only picked it up because the title was one of those random ass ones.... I've watched enough anime that I knew off the bat that there was something weird going on.
    Yeah..... basically this is a show where everyone is goddamn crazy. It's literally like they brought out the worst things in humanity but to some extent everyone also has reasons and some redeeming qualities. I enjoyed it though, I watched it at a time I really shouldn't have. I was depressed AF, just finished Banana Fish and picked this up. My mind went places, really had me wondering about my own morals.
    Definitely would not recommend watching both of these back to back.

    I literally love satou's personality and happy sugar life itself, ever since I found it, I couldn't stop watching it.
    I cried almost everytime I watched episode 9 and 12 (for obvious reasons)
    9 - Shouko Hida, the only sane person's death
    12- The main character herself, Satou Matsuzaka.

    Okay I will agree, happy sugar life was indeed an anime that was pretty intriguing ,but some things I didn't like in that anime was that in one of the episodes sato bribes matsubushi into helping her with something in exchange she would let him see shio I believe and it got me pretty mad since I believe before that he said he was gonna face his trauma on women but that didn't work out bc of satos bribe another thing I didn't like /understand why did the mangaka also make matsubushi also love shio it just made me feel even bad for him because we never matsubushi ever get better :/, we only see his trauma increase even further with satos aunt which honestly made feel even bad for him like I was praying for a girl or anyone in general to help him 😞. I also didn't like that sato literally killed her friend like yea ik sato did it for shio but still her friend just wanted to help but my biggest dislike was about how shio just forgave her after everything of that like ik she's a kid but still if I were a kid and someone told me that I would be a bit scared of them
    plus the matter a fact shios brother did so much to find shio just for his efforts to go to waste like it got me so mad I also didn't really like that matter a fact that shio was 7 and sato was 15 that's like a 8 year old age gap which in my opinion is a big no for me 💀
    But it was for the most part intriguing I just didn't like those parts in my opinion but if you like it that's great just know that's all my opinions on the show 😭
    Anyways Thank you for reading this if you did (ˊ˘ˋ*)

      It was kinda hard for the viewer but in the end, u understood why the killing happened.
      I also don't like that Matsubushi was not cured yet this in the end I didn't want him to be cuted lol

    • @thebreadhead2000
      @thebreadhead2000  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It all boils down to trauma. Mitsuboshi held Shio on such a high pedestal he believed she was the only cure. When he makes up his mind to finally deal with his trauma only for Satou to pull an uno reverse on him is a response I would call pretty "human" because getting over addiction/trauma is no easy feat. Shio accepting Satou even after finding out Satou was a murderer sorta makes sense considering how Shio was abandoned and not really having a positive influence of affection so I guess she decided that this is what love is and stuck with her to the end.
      I think the anime purposefully tries to get you to hate all the characters regardless if they've been traumatized or had sad backstories. Just because they have trauma doesn't make them absolved of all the bad they do and we see them face the consequences of their actions which I think is pretty cool

    • @Saltkoenigin
      @Saltkoenigin ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @BreadHead I agree to a degree
      that Mitsuboshi put Shio to a pedestal was to be expected
      yet that Shio was stuck between going back to her broken brother or being left with a murderer which protects her is smth to think about too.
      in shios Situation bring left with sato was the best option possible
      I kinda love this anime
      This anime created a whole chapter which still influences me today

    Tbh, I'm actually kinda surprised that the author still tagged the anime and its manga as yuri since the love Satou has for Shio is romantic but not sexual at all. Bro literally draws and illustrates them cuddling and kissing each other like fr? I feel like Satou is asexual at some point since she has never had any interest in any guys she slept with or people other than Shio who happens to be a little girl.
    But the big question is, does the author still tagged this anime and its manga as yuri? Tbh, I wouldn't be surprised if he does. Tbf, I think this series would've been a lot better if Shio is somewhere between like 12 or 14 since Satou is 16 or if the main ship would be Satou X Sumire.

    Love is such an essential physiological drive, it's near sacred in every country, culture and time. It makes any crime understandable and nearly honorable in the eyes of the public. Yet HSL is able to desecrate it in all it`s forms (platonic, familial & romantic) with absolutely terrifyingly good writing. 10/10, never want to watch it again.
