  • Elisabeth of Valois, also known as Elisabeth of Peace was a French princess who became the third wife of King Philip II of Spain, and Queen Consort of Spain from 1559 until her death in . The marriage was the result of the Treaty of Cateau-Cambresis which established peace between Spain and France - and Queen Consort of Spain from 1559 until her death in 1568.

"Elisabeth of Peace" seems such a sympathetic figure, just like her portrayal in Verdi's superb Opera Don Carlos. However, unlike the opera's plot, there appears to have been a genuine love and regard between Elisabeth and Philip, not always guaranteed in political matches. Thank you for the lovely and informative video, as always.

It's good to hear about a prosperous royal marriage. But it's painful she died so young. May her soul rest in peace. Royal girls had really tough lives, so much pressure to have male heirs. Thanks for sharing about her.

Henri II of France and Catherine de Medici had five daughters: Elisabeth (1545-68), Claude (1547-75), Marguerite (1553-1615) and twin daughters Jeanne and Victoire who died at birth in 1556. Elisabeth was the eldest daughter. Thanks just the same for your documentaries which are amped interesting and generally well-researched.

So often foreign princesses in marriage alliances are despised by the people of the country into which they are married. It's nice to learn of at least one where the foreign queen was loved by her adopted country.

Well that’s kinda logical, marriage contracts are usually made with rival nations, usually ones that have recently been or are currently at war. If President Harry Truman had married a sister or daughter of Hitler in 1947, how many Americans would have welcomed her? These women were the princesses of nations that many common folk had recently lost loved ones fighting, obviously it’s not their fault but if your father had been killed fighting the French would you be happy with a French ruler?

Very interesting to hear that Elisabet of Valois was so happy with Philip II of Spain! Mary I and Philip II had not so good luck. It was so sad that Elisabet died so young, 23 years old. But she was mourned by her husband which I thought was very nice. Thank you for telling about her life! 😊❤️

I like this channel because in the Anglosphere, we rarely get any French history. I bought one “complete history of France”, but in the first sentence it dismissed all French history before the Revolution, of which I’ve learned enough already. I returned that crappy book, with its misleading title. There’s a lot more to French history than the last 200 years and I’m no interested in modern history, I already know what it’s like to live now!

Good for you and I strongly agree with your sentiment! If it wasn't for the history of the french prior to the revolution, there would be no France! For post revolution likes to think of themselves as french history. When in fact, they destroyed much of Frances history in the purges of the revolution! My ancestors were the ones who built France and unlike the revolutionarys who destroyed a once great country and it's history. To think what France would be today if not for the revolution. Those nori le and great people still live in in my blood and can never be destroyed, although they tried, not all was destroyed or loss to the dust bin of history.🌞👑🛡️⚜️

I have the exact same disinterest in modern history! And I also define it as the last 200yrs, which confuses people- I say "modern" & they think 21st-c, & if I hear "historical" & find out it's Victorian or 20thc, I'm MASSIVELY disappointed. I would've thrown that rubbish book across the room! This channel's done amazingly well to get me enthused about "modern-ish" 18thc history, but I think it's also cos France is more interesting then- I'm less into British history after Charles II, & the Hanovers bore me to tears, but I'm trying to learn some NON-British European history at last, lol, & France, Spain & Portugal are really interesting. It was so nice to already know the people in this vid, & be able to fit some more info into the story. So yeah, it's great to find non-British European history in English!

@@jacquesrenou2850 Hey, I have distant royal ancestors too, but you can't say that to most people 🙄 I _know_ literally everyone alive has some; I just like knowing exactly _which_ royalty. It's an illegitimate (ofc!) son of James V of Scotland (so a half-brother of Mary Queen of Scots), so from France I have Catherine de Valois through the Tudors... As a native French speaker, could you clarify if the Th in French is pronounced as T or Th in names like Catherine, Elisabeth or Athenais and other words. When I learned French forty years ago in college (mostly forgotten through disuse), our native-French instructor said it was just as T, as in classical Latin. Has it changed since then, does it vary by region, or it is just pronounced Th for this English version of the video? Thank you, I would like to keep my French pronunciation up to a minimal standard. I try to pronounce things correctly, especially in those languages that I have studied, I don’t have any excuse not to. These videos are in excellently written and spoken English, by the way! Great job introducing us ignorant Americans to the amazing history of France. Our school curricula only include US and State history, for the US State where we are taught, but European history has been a lifelong interest for me because my all known ancestors were European, my father is first-generation American, and my other family wasn’t here much longer, either.🙂

Don Carlos, who was very close to his uncle, had told him he planned to flee Spain, probably to finally marry the daughter of Emperor Maximilian II (that marriage had been indefinitely postponed by his father) and gain supporters against his father, but Don Juan was against this and the prince reacted in a violent way.

Would you have liked to be a princess just like Elizabeth of Valois or Marie-Antoinette?

Here goes: I most like Maria Leszczyńska, as she was drama free and kind. The one I 'hate' the most ... I hate none, but I do dislike Henri III. As a child I dreamt of being a princess but quite frankly, there lives were not to be envied. And as much as I love visiting Versailles, no... I wouldn't have wanted to live there as it was a cage for nobility. The nobles I'd have liked to be friends with are without a doubt the Duc De Saint-Simon and Elisabeth of the Palatinate...
