  • Wondering why hairdressers cringe when we hear the words "box dye" or "box color"? There are 5 main reasons why we can't stand it. I did sin and colored my hair for one reason: it's permanent, the pigment is strong (so very little fading over time) and because I can't get color from beauty supply stores because they're all closed! So here's my 2 cents on box dye. Have you done it?? Let me know in the comments 👇

    This video actually made me reconsider dying my hair darker at home and actually explained why it damages more. Most videos just say “don’t do it “ but don’t explain why so I appreciate you going into detail about it. I’ll just wait til I have enough money to go to the salon. Thank you

  • @meeshrosenberg1983

    Ive only just started using a box dye as i was finding it was not only too expensive for a semi permanent hair colour but also i never really liked the end result at my salon, i asked for light brown and it always comes out too dark. They never seem to listen to what i want. So i took the plunge and bought a semi permanent box dye and i can honestly say how pleased i am with it, the colour on the box is the one i got and my hair feels healthy and shiny. Whatever reasons salons give for being anti box dye i still think it boils down to the fact its all about loosing £££ for them, although they would never admit it. Salons are expensive not because of the products used (you can buy a tube of pro colour at sallys for under ten pounds) you are paying for the time and service. So as long as my patch test is good im sticking with the box dyes

    • @sklptdhair
      @sklptdhair  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry you had that experience at the salon. As a professional myself, the video goes over why we're against box dye - so it's not about losing money. We genuinely don't want you to ruin your hair. If your salon didn't listen to you, that's not the color's fault. Did you try another salon? I'm happy you found a product that works for you! Semi and demi permanent color does make the hair shiny. It's the permanent colors that are not good in the long term. Thank you for leaving this comment!! :)

    • @meeshrosenberg1983
      @meeshrosenberg1983 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could also look at it this way, if there was no one ruining their hair with box dyes then there would be no one rushing to the salon for colour corrections! Again, the colour i chose on the shade chart prior to colouring was a level 6, a neutral light brown, and the finished result was more like a level 4 brown. This happened more then once too, so you can understand how frustrated and disappointed i was, and reluctant to have them do it again. Im not sure who the blame lies with here but i would expect a better outcome from a professional salon.

    Subbed. This video is so informative and I'm hoping it gets way more views. These details are important.
    It's like L'oreal assumes everyone that uses their color has coarse or resistant gray hair. I tried their shade #3 a year ago and it had waaay too much ammonia for a soft black 😑.
    I don't think most box color companies still use any metallic salts (besides progessive dyes or compound hennas) but I have heard that the dye molecules are larger than what's in professional color. I've seen a few vids of pros showing how box dye doesn't bleach out easily and a stylist from India actually showed under a microscope how box color roughened the cuticles more than professional color. I hope more people find vids like this before grabbing a box. Thanks for sharing.

    Box dye has a higher volume developer and is more pigmented in order to "keep their promise" to color your hair because it's not individually formalized the color has to work on curly coarse hair the same way it would on straight fine hair

    Well to lower the 20 developer just dilute it. I take just half and add conditioner instead its fine and turns out beautiful. Dying dark hair is easy at home, no need for hair dressers.

    I used box dye for the first time a couple of months ago and I actually loved the results and I was amazed by the fact that my hair actually turned the same color as in the chart. And it was perfect for around two months but now it’s pretty brassy and I can’t tone it back :(

    • @sklptdhair
      @sklptdhair  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup it always ends up brassy because they hair has been lifted 2 shades instead of simply depositing using a lower volume. You can try using a demi with a lower volume to tone.

    So I have light brown hair I guess. It’s not a dark blonde but it’s not a dark brown. I want to add a shade darker and mix it in since highlights and lowlights in the past have left a grown out line in my hair. Anyways, after years of growing my natural color back out, ide like to add some dark mixed in. What should I do or ask for?

    I used 20 developer with well T18 on my hair to tone it, and I feel like it didn’t do anything except dry my hair out, I’ve been using manic panic mixed with conditioner to tone it but I’m considering using a box dye to tone it (I’ve seen some people do it) but I’m kinda scared I have curly hair and don’t want to damage my curls, I make sure to trim my ends after every hair coloring treatment and so far they’ve been okay, idk though!!

    • @sklptdhair
      @sklptdhair  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yikes girl, why did you use toner with 20vol? Toners should only be used with 10vol or lower. Your hair is only going to become dryer if you use box dye, then you'll have a real doozy on your hands if you get the wrong color. Curly hair is dryer in general, so please take care of it and text your hairdresser!

Do you have any reccomendations or tips? i was thinking maybe i should just leave my hair to grow out the colour and use shampoos that will fade the hair colour then have a go at going blonde before summer. Would be great if i could get a reply, thankyou!

      You have to see a stylist. 7 times overlap of box dye is way too much deposit to lift the hair to blonde. You will need at least a year of highlights and a huge budget to go and maintain your blonde!

    Box dye is not good!!! It is blocking your hair shalft and plus all the product to mantain the colour from cheap category it help to block hair even more. Ending up loosing hair all day long and hair start to behave badly because they are full of parabenc sillicons and dye. Stop using thata my advice to all woman. If you want to colour your hair aim for a good hair colour brand and shampoos if not then stick to you natural hair and use natural shampoo and twice a week conditioner and daily smooth your hair with oils more helthy look and less cost no damage.
