The Legend of Zelda's TRUE Origin Story: Twilight Realm Mystery SOLVED

  • The hidden full truth of Hyrule’s Creation and the purpose of the Twilight Realm’s existence are a few of many mysteries that have answers waiting to be found in the original Japanese version of Twilight Princess.
    What exactly is the Twilight Realm? How does it differ from the Twilight that envelops Hyrule and why does the Twilight in the Twilight Realm, not force Link to transform into a wolf the way it does in Hyrule? In this video, we dive into the Japanese version of Twilight princess to reveal the answers to all of these mysteries, discover hidden secrets lost in localisation and uncover the truth of the Twilight Realm’s Connection to Hyrule.
    As in the nature of language and localisation, many intricacies and cultural nuances can be lost during the translation process. This video is dedicated to reviving those lost elements through immersive explanations that would otherwise be difficult to achieve in the limited space of the dialogue text boxes in Twilight Princess. All translations have been completed by me.
    With that said, another may decide on different translations for words or phrases. I’ve endeavoured to remain as faithful to the original Japanese text as possible while ensuring a balance of accuracy and clarity.
    A massive thanks to:
    - DarklordIIID from DeviantArt for providing me with a piece of art for the thumbnail.
    - MIDZELINK for some of the textless cutscenes - This really did make the editing process so much smoother.

    I'm sadly not all that surprised there's differences in translations that are at times opposite to what the original text said.
    Remember how in Botw Zelda said Dark Beast Ganon was the result of him giving up reincarnation? Whereas in the Japanese version it was his stubborn refusal to give up on revival.
    It's really strange why differences like these still exist.

      Yea, these videos are slowly making me frustrated with our localizations. The language adopted and changes made more often then I dared imagine create a lack of clarity in the best cases, and straight up lead to misinterpretations of the subject matter at worst. The original texts description of the Sacred Land and Hyrule is incredibly specific here, so you'd think they'd be more careful to preserve such specificity otherwise we get what we have now, a fanbase confused or with incorrect views of the story and lore.

    • @PJCVita92
      @PJCVita92 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Yeah, they need to take inspiration from Aaron's video and re-release all the old games with the correct and more accurate translations. Which is what they should've been doing starting with SS HD. If only they could take some more time on SS HD to patch the game with the accurate translates. That'd be nice. Better yet, they really should've been using the correct translations from the very start! I feel like as though they did this purposefully as a sort of different perspectives kind of gimmick for their series. However, if that's the case, then, as we all know, that didn't really go exactly as they planned now did it?

    • @IxisNaugus
      @IxisNaugus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@PJCVita92 The localization team is obviously omitting certain phrases and language purposely, so they probably assume this is best for the western audience. This means the challenge now would be somehow convincing their localization team that being more faithful to the language of the source material is in the interest of the franchise, but after decades worth of games following this localization structure, can they even be convinced to pivot at this point? I'd like to be hopeful but I can't deny our chances are very small here.
      I think you have it right when you say they should have started with SS HD - or hell, even the Wii game - as its timeline placement would have served as the perfect opportunity to properly introduce us to the concepts and specifics missing from other games. The longer this goes on though, the less likely this can be fixed, I think.

    • @lukes9192
      @lukes9192 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think that there is just a different story period. I don't think its necessarily mistranslated, I think its that they modified the story for the American audiance. They might figure an American audience would be less impressed by a deeply religious people and a story of internal greed, and more interested in a story of invasion. Theres no law saying they need to maintain the lore exactly when they localize a game. The vast majority of people who play the game wont know that the story is slightly different several thousand miles away.

      It really makes a lot of sense.
      The triforce is a physical manifestation the goddesses left behind when they finished creating the whole WORLD. Like, the actual dirt, water, and life. A talisman as important as the triforce would be in a very secure and powerful place such as Hyrule
      Hyrule is a large "land" in the world, with many different nations and peoples in its borders, but there are even farther flung places in the world that Hyrule doesn't have dominion over.
      It makes sense that Hyrule would be sen like Rome or Alexandria or the United States, that is like a land of power and influence, and known as "the Golden Land," not unlike the "Shining City On a Hill" metaphor that is tossed around regarding the US.

    I want to know what the Japanese version of a link to the past has to say about the sacred land now
    Since in that game the sacred land in its corrupted form appears as some sort of mirror/spirit world that can change depending on events that happen in Hyrule as well as the desires of someone that has made a triforce wish
    I also wonder how the Japanese version of skyward sword describes the silent realm as I believe it has some kind of connection to the sacred land due to the way it is interacted with in sky keep

But, certainly, the japanese version is clearer and let us see the true intent of these words. I've more recently discovered your channel and am working my way through your past videos. They're all so good! It's amazing how many other theory videos I've seen that would either be invalidated, or cast in a new and more interesting light, based on your work.
    After this one, I'm really interested in seeing one about A Link to the Past. In the English version, per Zelda wiki, "The resting place of the sacred triangle, the Sacred Realm, is a mirror that reflects what is in the heart...the heart of one who enters it.", and this "sacred realm" becomes the "dark realm" when Ganondorf enters it. In fact, according to the wiki, it was chronologically earlier in Ocarina of Time when Ganondorf enters the sacred realm and transforms it into the dark realm. The way that Hyrule transforms between the past and the future in Ocarina would align well with the idea of Hyrule being the Sacred Realm / Dark Realm; but A Link to the Past clearly shows that realm being different from Hyrule. I'd really love to know what, um, light a better translation could shed on this.

They do seem to have much of the same ways of being described, as a sort of counter-part to Hyrule. Perhaps, considering that Lorule and the Shadow Realm is in two different timelines, they're simply two ways the same place developed as a result of things happening in Hyrule. The Hyrulian civil war resulted in unification of hyrule under the King of Hyrule. Its been implied that Bongo Bongo may have been of the Shadow Tribe. But the sheikah are known as the shadow folk does that mean the sheikah were a schism group that sided with the goddesses against the rest of the shadow tribe or does shadow folk just refer to them always working in the shadows. We know shadow magic exists as the shadow medallion exists so it seems it was an important element meaning the shadow tribe maybe have been sister group to the sheikah who helped maintain the shadow temple. Before they tried a cou with thebfused shadows.

    Thank you so much for this video! The story of Twilight Princess had always felt a bit flat to me, and now I'm starting to think the translation of these key concepts is a pretty significant contributing reason. To me, many of these lines about light, darkness, and twilight felt inconsistent while I was playing... it got frustrating trying to make sense of what points the game was trying to make. And that made it harder to appreciate (or even be interested in) the bigger thematic structure of the story.

    • @QuestWithAaron
      @QuestWithAaron  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, I completely understand where you're coming from! Intentionally or not, I think it can be quite easy to insert elements of your own interpretation into translations; I think this could be a reason for why so many words in the English translation seem to "clash" with each other. Like calling the shadow world (twilight realm) a place that's covered in darkness etc, where typically darkness is more so associated with Ganon/Ganondorf.
      I don't think it's a fault of the localisers though, this stuff can be super difficult to find perfect translations for, especially when words are similar (or have multiple meanings). I've tried to keep my translations to what I believe to be the closest to the original text as possible and provide explanations of words that require them (something that NoA wouldn't have the luxury for).
      With that said, I'm super happy you enjoyed the video and that it's cleared up some inconsistent story elements! Honestly, I felt the same way, before looking at the Japanese text!

    Then what was the "sacred realm" in which ganondorf was sealed in oot? And in a link to the past, what was the place referred to as the "sacred realm" that Ganon changed into the dark world, that was clearly separate from Hyrule, but shared geographical similarities? Not arguing anything, just really want to know the truth

    • @QuestWithAaron
      @QuestWithAaron  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The place in OoT where the sages are located is the dimension of the Sacred Realm. Whereas the place that Lanaryu speaks of in Twilight Princess is specifically Hyrule, the Sacred Land. In fact, the dimension of the Sacred Realm is not mentioned at all in Lanaryu's speech in Japanese.
      The Japanese word 聖地 (seichi) is used to describe both places, however, it can refer to multiple things as I mentioned in the video. I think this is where a lot of the confusion originates from.
      We're also told that the entrance to the dimension of the Sacred Realm is located in the Temple of Time, which is located in the Sacred Land, Hyrule. The Triforce wasn't always kept in the dimension of the Sacred Realm as we see at the end of Skyward Sword. Instead, it's in plain sight atop the Goddess Statue in the land that became Hyrule. What precisely happened after though, would certainly be something exciting to speculate about!
      I hope that clears up some of the differences between the English and Japanese releases!

One of the foundations for my channel is the importance of analyzing art in its purest form to obtain the most accurate vision of what the artists were striving for and understand the performance of writing and presentation a lot more faithfully. I intend to explore Zelda, but it'll be an even bigger task than fully retranslating FFVII (something that has been thankfully achieved now after a long time). So I see you as being a very important potential partner to have for the future.

    • @thepsyshyster8243
      @thepsyshyster8243 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The word Aaron translates as "tribe", is "zoku" 族, the Japanese word for a tribe, clan, or family. For example, you would refer to the Anglo-Saxons as "Anglo-Saxon zoku" アングロ・サクソン
      族. If we look further back to the original Chinese word "zoku" is derived from, we also find uses to categorizing groups by common features (which was carried over to Japanese by the word being synonomous to the Tribe level of taxonomical categorization), as well as referring to ethnic groups and nationalities.
      Due note that I am considerably less adept with the Japanese language than Aaron is, and I may be mistaken in some of my claims. If Aaron can further/better explain this, I'm sure he will.

    AH! not ONLY that, but in the part of the text that say '' but soon, word of the seacred realm spread through Hyrule, and a great battle ensued...'', the ITALIAN translation say '' but soon, the rumors about Hyrule, SACRED LAND, they were cause of discord'' even if the ''''rumors part'' is not properly said in the original japanes text, AT LEAST...they acknowledge that the sacred land is NOT a realm disconnetted from Hyrule, But it's Hyrule itself.

    Though, in Ocarina of time, don’t you need to pull out the master sword to get to the Sacred Realm where the Triforce rests? If Hyrule is supposed to be this sacred land, then wouldn’t someone like Ganondorf be able to just get the Triforce from the temple of time if it’s in there? I’m not sure how all this makes sense… and for that matter, they did say that the evil power came from the temples of Hyrule and once they’re sealed, they stop the evil power from coming out of the evil realm.

    • @QuestWithAaron
      @QuestWithAaron  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! So the key point here is that the "Sacred Land" that Lanaryu refers to in Twilight Princess is strictly Hyrule. Whereas the dimension of the Sacred Realm is of course something different entirely. We know that the Triforce was moved to the dimension of the Sacred Realm later on, with the entrance to it being somewhere within Hyrule, the Sacred Land. As you said, in OoT the Temple of Time connects these two sacred places.
      There's no mention of the dimension of the Sacred Realm at all in TP. The Japanese word used to refer to the Sacred Realm and the one used to describe Hyrule as a sacred land is the same - This is what confused the translators initially, I believe. I hope this clears up a few things!

      @@QuestWithAaron So is Ocarina of Time's Sacred Land implied to be a different plane of existence entirely by the Japanese text or just somewhere within the land of Hyrule? The thing that really confuses me is the mention of keys to the Sacred Land and the fact it is described as a mirror of ones heart. One way I suppose you could explain that is the place in Hyrule that the Triforce is, is the only part of Hyrule affected by a person's heart and that requires some kind of key to access. But that's only to say if it is in fact not an alternate dimension.

    • @QuestWithAaron

      @@ThomasCapella Yeah that's right. From what I understand, by Ocarina of Time, the dimension of the Sacred Land (Realm) exists and that is where the Temple of Light is as well (as we seem in the game). When Hyrule was still a new creation of the goddesses the Sacred Land was considered to be that very Hyrule itself (as Lanaryu states in the JP version of TP). Unfortunately, the distinction between Hyrule, the Sacred Land, and the dimension of the Sacred Realm is made even more confusing in AlttP. The whole thing could warrant a video or three to fully explain tbh.
      Essentially, the dimension of the Sacred Realm and Hyrule, the Sacred Land are two different things.
      In Twilight Princess, there is no mention of the dimension of Sacred Realm that we're familiar with. The Japanese text establishes that Hyrule was the Sacred Land from the moment it was created and that its people were religious. It's not until much later on that we hear about the dimension of the Sacred Realm, and that the entrance to it exists within Hyrule.
      It's implied that the dimension was used to protect the Triforce as people became greedy. At the end of Skyward Sword, the Triforce is in plain sight. But, as people learned about what it was capable of, their desire to obtain it for themselves increased - hence the wars. But this is now edging towards the theory side of things xD
      I hope that helps explain a few bits. I'll most likely do a video covering AlltP in the future!

    Why do I have a weird hunch that the difference between English and Japanese texts is a lingering effects of how in earlier days something has to be censored in the US. Like, because something needs to be censored to avoid religious subject, the narrative of Zelda games in English version is slightly different than that of the original Japanese and as the time went on, the subsequent games need to also be altered slightly to keep that same altered/censored narrative?
    Or maybe I'm just overthinking and it's just a weird lost-in-translation thing of a localisation.
