The move to St Pancras was probably the right call - while the trains could travel at 300km/h, they were limited to 120-160km/h on the 750V DC lines to Waterloo

Indeed. It's also more convenient for travelling to other major cities as it's right next to King's cross and Euston and also kind of near Paddington, which serve more of the places the sort of people using the Eurostar might want to go to

An enormous amount of money for the upgrade, partly gone ahead with, I believe, due to President Mitterrand embarrassing the UK Government in saying that, once the Eurostar emerged from the tunnel, the passengers had time to enjoy the beautiful English countryside on the trip to London Waterloo IIRC.
HS1 should have had it's own London station instead of going into and out of a terminus (like the original Brussells set up) with onward trains to Scotland but that will never happen due to the cost.
Living in Basingstoke and therefore going into Waterloo for Eurostar services HS1 seemed a complete white elephant to me, I was quite content with up to 160 km/h for the comparitively short distance to the Tunnel and it was interesting to snake through South London on the posh train via places like Brixton (I bet there's some French people who agree).
Had they kept the route going into Waterloo on 3rd rail it would have been essential for reliability in the Winter to install standby Diesels in the Class 373s for when the 3rd rail ices over (but would have provided more embarrassment for us Brits).

@@Martindyna.... you totally missed the whole point about Eurostar - a high speed railway from end to end, competing with air traffic. It was never meant to share lines with domestic services! This wasn't why it was built.
A dedicated HS line in England should have been built and been ready from the start. But surprise surprise the Tories opposed such a line. There were plenty of 'headbanger' MP's around back in the day.
So embarrassingly for the first 13 years, Eurostars (in this side) had to crawl along lines with speed limits of 70mph , passing through tiny village stations. Of course it looked odd.
It was incredibly embarrassing looking back. No wonder Mitterrand made a pointed jibe at us. The French laughed at us, and how the country that invented the railways, couldn't manage to build a high speed line to make the journey between London and Paris seamless.
Poor planning on our part, and a generally 'anti rail' government (back in the early 90's), are why it took 13 years for a high speed line here to be completed. The Tories haven't changed one bit.
They're still anti rail - the HS2 debacle being an example. And they're now more right-wing than ever before.

Absolutely could not agree with you more although an impressive sight they were not designed for third rail working hence the slow speeds on existing tracks even the max 100 mph between Tonbridge and Ashford was seldom achieved just too much domestic traffic on this route to allow that speeds on the Maidstone were even lower esp when passing through Maidstone east itself with that horrible curve which is probably why it was also one of the best places to photograph it as the train was so slow mind you this route was only used primarily for diversions although a handful of Eurostars were booked to use this line during the morning and evening peaks as sevenoaks is congested at these times so much better to send via Maidstone even if it is about 10-20 minutes slower however this is all in the past sadly I used to love going to West malling and watching them and despite the low speed standing on the station they seemed to be really fast when hs1 opened I bet all Eurostars where relieved they did not have to be slowed down anymore.

Excellent stuff! My local, where the staff let me do the station announcements in platform office's as a kid in 80's, thanks to Jon, Steve and mostly Bill. Spent half my school-time here instead lol. . . Indeed doesn't time fly. . Then i had the honour of a loco-driver for a girlfriend much later in life. Then didnt (not recommended)! Even saw her off from these platforms, i could never of dreamed it in a trillion years. . .
Always liked your work, thanks for sharing, have subbed.

@@Felixjaz Yep i know the feeling sir, i'm stuck in 1987-94, but mainly summer 1990 lol. Getting my 80/90's pics scanned last year by my good friend has been great to share on FB groups, i shall now endeavour to get them and more, up on here. Indeed, as i was always obsessed with liveries too, i recorded them all and have researched the gaps with the aid of the internet, trying to compile a database for said data, massive job covering that era and them amount of loco's eh, doubt i'll have the time! . . Strange really, i should hate trains, but i dont! I still play with me model loco's she played with, and also have a multitude of unique stuff from her too :)

We will honestly never see anything like this again. High Speed International trains which should be going 186mph crawling through Victorian lines into London on 3rd rail power. This shouldn’t have happened, but it did.
When EuroStar first started, France was decades ahead of the UK in terms of infrastructure, LGV Nord was built for High Speed. When you emerged out of the tunnel and into England, the railway, trains and stations would make you think you were in the 1960s or 70s.

The number of substations feeding the 3rd rail had to be reviewed to enable it to happen.

Living in Basingstoke (so coming into Waterloo) the Eurostar at Waterloo was far more convenient for me.
I enjoyed going through the `back streets' of London on the Eurostar and then out to the countryside at 70 - 100 mph (as a tourist in no hurry) for the short trip to the tunnel.
Had they stayed with the Waterloo route it would have been advisable to install standby Diesels in the Class 373s for Winter reliability should the 3rd rail ice over. 1800 BHP per power car (200 X 18 vehicles) would have been adequate for up to 60 + mph (depending on the gradients on the route which I'm not aware of). Probably no room for them though!

On these stretches the Eurostar trains were limited to just 120-160km/h, 40-53.3% of their intended operating speed
