You were actually a huge inspiration that kind of confirmed that I could shoot a full length feature film, all by myself, and be the only actor in the film, which I went ahead and did, during the pandemic, on my phone. It became an award winning film. And so, thank you. 🙏😉

Another great video. I personally like the idea of building an audience that doesn’t expect an elaborately produced effort every time I upload. That being said, i want to have the occasional surprise to let them know I can. And its so fulfilling to create awesome content. Its just a lot of work committing to it when I am always alone. Im realizing its a must if I want a certain level of success here. So Thank you.
One of your best videos, the way you back up the tips with your visual storytelling is chefs kiss. I also think you have some of the best composition I've seen on TH-cam
I loved your video. I agree 100% with your final thoughts: filming by yourself can be very frustrating and time-consuming, you're gonna miss focus and mess up the frame and composition but you learn a lot by doing any single aspect of making a video. I just started and I am a noob but I know that trial and error is the best way to improve. And that's what I love about it :)
It took me five years to make my no-budget debut feature film, and that was with using non-actors in front of the camera. How you're helping others achieve making their films with just themselves in front of the camera - I take my hat off to you. Well done!
Heres my tip. Give your footage extra time. If you are filming a standard tripod shot of an object just hold the shot a little longer than you think you need. Nothing is more annyoing then when you are editing and your shot needed to just be a few more seconds longer and then it ends.... On the flipside dont be stagnant on your angles. So to sum it up. Film lots of angles but hold the shot a little longer than you think. Once you get it move to the next!
love this! def agree with the “getting bored of a locked off shot and finding new angles”!!! my biggest pain point with filming myself is figuring out how to manually focus myself 🥲 any tips on that?
Good tips. I got a dji mini 2 drone over the summer (not the greatest one out there but 4k atleast). Adding the drone as another tool has been nice to spice it up, and add some motion, from just tripod shots. Obviously not everyone can run out and buy expensive drones, and not everyone can fly one efficiently. But for solo content creators they are really nice to have
Wow i think i remember that video you shared a couple years ago. You’ve grown since the days of nosmallcreator, when i first learned about you. Your content is so timeless and fruitful. Thanks for sharing!
This has inspired me to head out tomorrow and try to film. I may not end up making a video, but I guess it is the practice and the consistency of doing the act that will improve the result over time. thank you
Loved filming, fantasy action, crazy fanfilms by myself. Had my own creative flow. It didnt always turn out as envisioned but l enjoyed it. It was all for fun!
I'm a newer creator and have definitely felt kinda foolish trying to film myself. At least I'm usually alone in the woods so people aren't watching me 😅 but these are some amazing tips and thank you for making this video!
Pls I'm a Nigerian, and I want to open a PayPal account but it refuses to open here in my country, can someone help me with that, I need it for my business
thank you for this! i especially love the dutch angle tip and the one where you placed the camera on the tree trunk. will try it out in my next travel vlog!
You are hands down one of, if not my favorite film channels to watch. You have a great talent in telling your story in away that's easy to relate to. Thanks for taking the time to share all your valuable knowledge. 🤘🏻
Tried to film myself this morning and got so frustrated. Found this video this afternoon and it was genuinely so helpful, even the last tip. I gotta be patient. Thanks man.
This is my first time to come to your platform but I got hooked up with the part of this video wherein there's a windom and you just sat down. I love the light that comes through the window
the immersive camera on the tree while you running trough, Dutch angle, great great ideas, so nice result. Thank you for sharing, right reach your followers
These are always fun for me to watch. I feel like you are one of the best at this Jake. I've been struggling lately in the very very early phases of shooting my own TH-cam content, and filming solo as both the "talent" on-camera and the operator is quite a challenge, especially when you want to make it interesting. Something else that I think not a lot of people talk about is that it's kinda hard to get together with people to film if you are in certain phases of your life. For me I'm 33 with a full-time job, a business that my wife and I also operate, and a 4 year old son. Most of the people I know and call friends are either 500 miles away or living a similarly hectic life that make shooting together basically impossible. These tips and just watching your content helps remind me that it is possible to do it by yourself and do it really well. It just takes patience and creativity as you mention. Thanks for sharing man.
Great list of tips here! Love the shot outside of the van, I've used shots like that or even mounted on the hood of the car pointing back. Will have the try the Dutch angle sometime...
Just starting off my career as a content creator and wasn't to sure on how to film myself. I can tell these tips alone will aid to my success tremendously. Much appreciated!
I just want to let you know that you're not alone. I am doing the same thing my friend. I try. That's all I can do. I wish you nothing but luck, prosperity and success moving forward my friend. We are ultimately all in this together. Just keep your head up and keep moving forward. We're not alone.
Ahhh Jake!!! Blowing my mind! One of the reasons I love your channel is that I learn so much about solo broll just by watching your videos. Now with the explanation added… You’ve tipped the scales. I’ve been obsessing over the dutch angle lately. This foreground tip just pushed it to the next level. Even if you jacked it, super helpful. And the B Story is honestly exactly what I need for the video i’m working on. I don’t have a plan for the B-Roll that aligns with the topic so this is also super exciting… Man!… I can’t emphasize how good this is for me. So much value being emparted. So keen to give these tips a go
G'day Jake, Really helpful video you have made for people that film solo. I film everything myself, my solo camping videos are filmed completely by me. It's a lot of work as you mentioned, but i get the shots that i wont to create the story in my videos. Thanks again.
my drone is basically my personal camera crew. with all the smart tracking they have you can get some awesome shots without even holding the controller
What an awesome video! In a sense, filming by yourself is better than filming with somebody. It helps you be more creative, and try new things with your project.
Every obstacle that comes in life should be studied and learned.Obstacles are sometimes our best teachers,as we always can learn something from them, and improve our selves! Keep doing great job!
Okay, your video maybe 12 months old, but I wanted to say thanks. I'm new to TH-cam video creation and by necessity have to film on my own. I've managed to gather a few accessories for my GoPro which are helping. Your info here has been a huge help and given me tons to think about to help get my videos to the next level (well at least the second step up a long ladder).
Bro you're honestly one of the best creators here on TH-cam. There's something about your videos that just feels right. Loved what you did with this one! As a TH-camr that films alone a lot, it was super interesting to hear your thoughts and advices about the process. Keep it up king!
I kinda started making videos very recently and i thought i had an idea of how to go about doing so just based on the media ive consumed (definitely didnt). I love what u said about there not being a set of answers but rather trying to create a feeling.
Your composition and color grade and style in general are absolutely lovely. Thanks for sharing your knowledge mate, I watch your videos with so much pleasure every time Jake, a feast for the eyes. Another great angle to add to the video and spice up the car scene is an internal profile shot with the camera mounted on the internal top handle to kinda simulate a pasaanger view of the driver. Aidin Robbins makes great ones.
The great ones inspire me - with Edgar Wright being my God - but you actually showed me how to do specific effects, some of which I'm planing to use in my projects, if I ever get to the point to actually bring them to life. Thanks for sharing.
I'm wanting to get into making videos, but I for sure have no one to film with. Can't wait to try these tips. One thing I really want to try is shooting a wider shot at a higher resolution than I need and then creating artificial movement when editing. Not sure how it'll turn out, but I'm excited to experiment.
Great video. I'm sure other creators talk about this but I've never come across them. The video itself is a great example of the techniques Jake is talking about.
This is really inspiring. I've struggled with self-filming for a long time (and trying to find my way around it), but this kinda makes it a bit more interesting.
Amazing video! I will definitely use some of these suggestions on my videos since I always record alone. I love the colours you use to make everything look amazing, any specific LUT do you use?
The intro was funny as hell. Great video since I'm stuck filming myself a lot. The notion of composition alone makes it worth it. I never thought about it.
Honestly, this is the best tip video for filming yourself I have seen. Each point you made is real and not just the same bs tips most people give. Thank you! Oh and you have an amazing energy about you. Going to now binge watch your videos 😂
Awesome stuff, man - love the focus on composition! Question for you: What style of tripod do you find yourself using more to shoot yourself? Travel tripod? Monopod with tiny travel legs? Gorillapod/Switchpod? Something smaller? 🤔
I'm trying to film a movie by myself at the moment. Something I've done is take a tripod/selfie stick with a gimbal attached to the end of it, and it allows me to track/truck with my feet and face pretty well. Also utilizing times of day to shoot, sunrise/sunset does wonders.
You were actually a huge inspiration that kind of confirmed that I could shoot a full length feature film, all by myself, and be the only actor in the film, which I went ahead and did, during the pandemic, on my phone. It became an award winning film. And so, thank you. 🙏😉

This helps so much as a solo backpacker/filmmaker! The thought process can be carried to any genre. Instant sub.

Filming by yourself is super hard. But still easier than having friends after 30

Step 6 - ask your elementary school teacher if you can get a class fog machine.
You crushed it man!! So stoked on this!!
Actually just ignore all the other tips and get a fog machine. No matter what it takes.
Was it fog or haze 😃 ?
These visuals are so underrated. So lovely - especially some of those wide low shots. Amazing!

never thought id gain all the value i did from this video, thank you
Jake thanks for this film and giving value to filming yourself alone bro…
Thanks for the tips! I loved how you break the conventions to keep challenging yourself!
I was always in the same boat trying to find friends to film with me. Now that I have kids, I always have a buddy that wants to be in a video.
Composition. You made your point with your engaging and impressively framed scenes. I need to dig deeper into this mine.
The intro was funny as hell. Great video since I'm stuck filming myself a lot. The notion of composition alone makes it worth it. I never thought about it.
Red Rocks is such a smart spot to demonstrate all of this!
Thanks for posting this! I've been trying to learn how to film myself and it has been such a struggle. I feel more encouraged now!
I totally saw Jessie Driftwood in the first shot! I used to watch his videos all the time.
This was epic. Absolutely loved it. Beautiful footage
Jake, you are my inspiration!!
The intro in this video shows how good filming by yourself can actually look.
0:30 “You’re testing a Nikon” 🤣🤣🤣
