You can activate the auto-backlight by holding down the light button for 3-5 seconds so when you tilt your wrist up in the dark the light comes on. I think you can change the duration to 3 seconds in the settings. I have the G-Shock Rangeman GW-9400-1 which is also a Master of G and a bit bigger and a few more functions. I am considering the Mudman or the Casioak like the exact model you have. I hope you are still enjoying your Mudman.
For the compass. You have to hold the watch horizontal as level as possible. I've had this watch for years. Almost a decade and I still wear it.
