I must be an alien in the metal scene. 55 years old, been wearing makeup, black clothes, boots, rings, chains, etc since 1983 and go from listening to Deicide, Centurian, Cannibal Corpse, Venenum, Bathory, Cloak, Metallica, Watain, Asagraum, Imperial Triumphant, Portal, Hirax and Nuclear Death to Kiss, Alice Cooper, The Cure, Christian Death, Geisha, Banshee, Halloween, Motley Crue, Rush, Van Halen, Ripper, Seduce all the way to The Carpenters, The Doors,The Beatles, Janis Joplin, The Who, Jose Feliciano, jazz, blues and even horror soundtracks. I just love music (except rap and lame ass pop)

There were absolutely no old fans at Day of Death in Buffalo back in the day. Hell, we thought Scott from Repulsion was old and he was only about 22 years old!!
There was one older guy that went to death metal shows back then . Eric Wilhelm's dad went to shows back then and for those that don't know Eric Wilhelm played guitar in Grotesque Infection and was one of the best death metal bands from Buffalo in the classic period.

Sadly, the Death Metal scene has never been bigger and yet lamer in it's history. Here in Portland, shows with bigger bands almost ALWAYS sell out , and they're filled with paddle wielding CANOES 🚣 and weekend warrior wimps.
Truth. I live out in the burbs now because I can't stand Portland anymore.
The DAWG's anti-wimp/pro-toughness mentality is exaggerated for comedic effect but there is a LOT of truth to it.
I used to think guys had to express their vulnerability, I was into Nirvana as a young teen and I thought embracing my vulnerability was a good thing. Turns out it wasn't - all it does it set you up for defeat and pain in the real world.
Now in my late 30's - I take the empowering message of MANOWAR as my guide.
It's not that being a man doesn't mean you can't feel vulnerable, it's just that wallowing in it and feeling like a victim gets you nowhere in life. It's far better to act like you're invulnerable, treat each challenge in life as a battle you're ready to conquer.
You can call it "toxic masculinity" all you want - I don't think a lot of men are wired the same way as women, we aren't mean to sit around and talk about our feelings.
That's not how masculine problems are solved, they're solved by developing resolve, resilience, and mental toughness.

I think crippling self pity and bottling up or denying one's negative emotions are two sides of the same coin. There should be a healthy center.

Also, though it's a well known fact within the Metal community, but worth repeating for all the newbs out there, back in the 90's Deicide attempted record _Prélude_ _à_ _l’après-midi_ _d’un_ _faune._ But Glen went on the record to say that he and the guys "failed to capture it's essence" in the studio, due to the bands "insurmountable insufficiencies of instrumental cohesion, further compounded by issues of aberrant distortion and inconsistant intonation". Glen also said that he and his bandmates simply "lacked the kvltic fortitude" to string it altogether and pull it off. Steve in particular had a helluva time keeping up, given the demanding nature of the works insanely fast tempi and advanced percussion techniques, such as the gravity-blast. They ultimately abandoned the project...and that's why I haven't been a Posercide fan since 1995. And if you think I'm bull-shitting you, it was no other than *METALSUCKS* who did the interview. *Best* *Metal* *site* *ever* *\m/*
