One of my favorite aspects of this arc that I wish more people noticed and touched on is the design of Peter's suit when he has the symbiote. When he first gets his black suit, it looks a lot like his normal suit just with new colors. It still has the same webbing design, unlike the suit design in the comics. As the episodes go on, there is less of the webbing design until you get to this episode where all of the webbing is gone and it's that same smooth look that the black suit has in the comics. It's a really neat way of showing the symbiote gaining control of Peter as it starts with a copy of Peter's own design and slowly morphs into a new design created by the symbiote.
My favorite episode of the series. The most Spider-Man episode of the show. RIP Ed Asner, the "I'm always here" part of the line hits so hard. Would've loved if you would've kept the Flash hospital part in the reaction, it's a pretty important and underrated part of this Symbiote Saga
My favourite moment of this entire show will always be the flashback montages. I always get such a warm feeling watching them and reflecting on Peter’s journey till that point.
Well Tombstone is not stupid, he knew Spider-man has morals (he didn't know about the symbiote and how it affects him) so if he made an less reasonable offer he knew he'd get shit down right away.
Weisman expressed interest in using The Kingpin, as a Big Bad on the show, but was unable to because while the character originated as a Spider-Man villain, Marvel now has Fisk officially classified as the arch-enemy of Daredevil, whom Sony did not have the rights to. As a result, the character Tombstone was used as a Suspiciously Similar Substitute.
Eh, all it did was improve Tombstone beyond his usual characterization he tends to get. Wish they kept his history/animosity with Robbie though. Would have made for some interesting stories. Plus, The Big Man was the OG secret crime lord from the comics (just turned out to be Foswell from the Bugle then, though).
The symbiote arc is the most memorable part of this show for me as a kid. I genuinely misremembered it as being an entire season arc it was that memorable.
Obviously some of it is the symbiote's influence, just like it was with Peter, but it is kind of telling about the kind of guy Eddie is that a lot of his anger and hate for Peter is based in his ignorance of him being Spider-Man and yet even after finding out the truth he still wants to take revenge on him. Think about it, this all started when he thought Peter ditched trying to help Dr. Connors so that he could take pictures for the Bugle. That he was just that much of a self-serving jerk. Now he know that Peter is Spider-Man, who was right there with him in stopping The Lizard and curing Connors. And Eddie doesn't care. Same for arriving late to see May at the hospital, which was because he'd been fighting the Sinister Six and genuinely didn't know about what had happened until MJ told him. And Eddie doesn't care. Heck, he's pissed off at Peter for snubbing Gwen in order to go to the dance with MJ but the truth of that entire event was that Peter never realized Gwen wanted to go with him and him taking MJ was a completely last minute thing. And Eddie doesn't care. And not giving the suit back was the symbiote's doing! It's the reason the lab lost the grant, not Peter! While Peter's not exactly completely innocent of all wrongdoing, Eddie doesn't actually have that many good reasons for seeking revenge on Peter after finding out he's Spider-Man. He's just tuning out all the "inconvenient" context so that he can keep hating Peter regardless and have someone to blame for the just simply shitty situation he's in.
Another thing thing that shows who these people are is what the symbiote has them do. Peter was a jerk, but he wasn’t going out to hurt people who inconvenienced him like JJJ, Flash, Sally, etc. Even at his worst, Peter isn’t a killer. Eddie though, murder is his first resort.

Which kinda reflects the original Eddie's grudge agaisnt Spider Man in the comic; Eddie scored an interview with a notorious Serial Killer, then Spidey arrested the real killer and Eddie's guy turns out to just be a seriel confessor and Eddie was ruined, the first time Peter actually knew who Eddie was it was as Venom's host.
The symbiote is probably also framing all of this knowledge to further push Eddie into hating Peter too. Like, "Oh sure, he stopped Connors, but he also made certain to grab a picture to profit off the situation," and other such things. Which just further reinforces to Eddie that Peter is doing all of this for glory and his own self interests. A few choice words and the right flashes of memory taken out of context combined with Eddie's own frustrations and anger makes it very easy to keep Eddie under control, not that Eddie had much self control anyway.
I love how this show handled Spider-Man's story and waiting until the end of the first season to give us his origins and how that shaped who he is as a man
If I had a nickel for every time my favorite version of a superhero's origin was one that took place halfway into their series as the character is being lead down memory lane by an angel on one shoulder and a demon on the other and the climax is them refusing to give into their desire for vengeance, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's awesome how it happened more than once. The other was Batman: The Brave and The Bold's "Chill of the Night".
Batman and Spider-Man are so widespread that the origin story in a new incarnation almost feels unneccessary, but it's good when used as part of a greater plot. Like in the 94 Spidey series where he was about to quit and talking with Tiana convinced him to stay on.
I feel like Chill of the Night was directly inspired by this episode: having Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy voice two entities bent on seeing whether Batman will break his rule and kill Joe Chill, seems very like the part where Venom and Ben are watching Peter dangle the robber.
One of the most spectacular - pun intended - episodes of this series. The way the Raimi trilogy is used for inspiration in this episode from the origin of Spider-Man to the black suit being removed is just very, very impressive. And big shoutout to Ed Asner (may he Rest In Peace) for voicing Uncle Ben. Next week: VENOM.

I’m very surprised Peter tried to freeze it. Considering it’s approved to be strong enough to survive the freezing temperatures of space. From outside the shuffle..but I get not cranking up the temperatures. Since that would imply that the Symbiote also was capable of surviving the heat up on reentry

What I love about this episode especially is that it demonstrates how the most important part of being a superhero is helping people, saving them from harm and keeping them safe as the most rewarding aspect.
I really liked how because Eddie is so similar to Peter in many ways that it makes sense why the suit would gravitate towards him. Plus there’s a resentment shared between them after being hurt from what must’ve felt like a betrayal by someone close and the guy’s at low point in his life. He’s like the perfect host and a good idea of how Peter might’ve turned out if he didn’t have those positive influences in his life looking out for him.
The MCU needs to take notes from this show for their black suit arc. Have it start out with the appearance of an ordinary fabric suit with his basic spider logo, but overtime it transitions into that inky, organic/alien texture with the webbing pattern fading & being replaced by the white veins of the symbiote. The mouth on the spider design grows, as well as the legs, spreading across his chest til it resembles that classic Venom logo. I also like the detail borrowed from the comics of it taking over his body while he sleeps. Also the mental battle of him ditching the symbiote, showing his origin + history, was so good I actually got emotional! It’d also be the perfect time to debut the Black Cat as his new love interest & part of the supporting cast (along with the Human Torch as his best friend + maybe Yuri Watanabe), since he’s taking a break from Ned & MJ and his new allies will likely be people who can protect themselves rather than normal civilians. The symbiote can feed off that toxic relationship with Felicia as she encourages him to embrace his dark side until it becomes too scary & overwhelming. I also like the detail in this show & in the comics of it taking control of Peter’s body as he sleeps. I hope we get a lot of time with the black suit (like 2 solo films + at least 1 crossover like the Fantastic Four where Reed can warn him about the suit like in the comics). Have it start off as a positive relationship & power buff, but over time, Peter & the symbiote turn out to be too toxic for each other and everything just feels right when he wears the suit with him becoming addicted to the power, being able to protect his loved ones, & feeling the suit is the only thing which understands him. I would have Mac Gargan be the MCU Venom. Let Michael Mando play a major role & show off his psycho/sinister acting chops after sitting on the sidelines in prison for so long.
I think Gargan should be working under a big bad like Kingpin, who makes gun/drug deals with the SM4 villain (maybe Mister Negative after May’s passing, with Peter helping out at FEAST). Have Mac sending shipments from Mexico, on which the symbiote hitches a ride, & bonds with Peter in a NY warehouse, during an encounter with Black Cat or Cloak & Dagger. Mayor Fisk can help J Jonah fund the Scorpion Project. Peter breaks Scorpion’s jaw while wearing the symbiote after finding out there’s a Hobgoblin flying around. They should make The Shocker be the weakness for the symbiote, accidentally helping Peter get it off. Either Peter can utilize his smarts to make a shockwave tech suit, or Herman can get a redemption moment. Let Mando show off the horror side of Venom.
the ed asner was also a legacy casting from Gargoyles, Wiessman's first show. Along with Keith David(who was the first voice of tombstone) and couple of others
I like the difference between this Symbiote Spider-Man and the 1999 Symbiote Spider-Man. The Spectacular version Symbiote Spider-Man is cold, manipulative alway getting inside Peter's head. Meanwhile the 1999 version is more prone to voilence and rage. For example, that iconic "SHOCKERRRRR" scene.

I always found it interesting that the symbiote only showed Eddie the benefits or positive outcomes of being Spiderman and never all the times Peter struggled throughout the show thus far.

I really believed that until reality hit me; "Responsibility/duty/obligation" has always been a myth, organisms are utterly free to act so stupid they turn their whole planet into a lifeless mass grave and the universe won't care, it never handed out "responsibilities/duties/obligations".
Ben should've been voiced by a Baby Boomer.Josh Keaton should've only voiced the symbiote when it was with Peter. Eddie goes around blaming Peter for losing his job when he's trying to figure out how to pay for the hospital bills.When Peter asked how exactly they plan on helping?Gwen and Liz should've thought of asking their fathers for some money.Instead of going to The Big Man,Peter should've thought of asking Norman for some cash,especially since Norman respects him like the son he wish he had instead of Harry.
The bell tower scene did originate from the comics. The "Not my problem" scene is similar, but a little different. In the comics he did let the mugger get away, but not because of some grudge with the manager guy. He just did not think it was his job. He was an entertainer, not a cop.
Part of me wishes Eddy had been infected somehow by the Symbiote even if he didn't have the full thing, it would've explained his anger better, but I do like what they went with regardless.

As much as I love his episode I’m kinda tired of the conventional Black a suit storyline. What I think would be an infinitely more interesting storyline would be one where Peter learns that the symbiote is alive and decides to keep it partly for selfish reasons sure but mostly because it’s a living creature that deserves an opportunity to learn and grow. Yes I know there’s a What If along those lines but I want one that doesn’t end in disaster. After all the symbiote has long since been established to not be evil or anything, if Eddie Brock or Flash Thompson could turn it into a hero then Peter absolutely could.

You have to love how reasonable Tombstone is with his deal. I mean it’s still wrong, but reasonable.
That’s why he’s such a compelling villain, he does terrible things but he can be reasoned with. He’s not a berserker like Rhino or Lizard.

Eddie goes around blaming Peter for losing his job when he's trying to figure out how to pay for the hospital bills.When Peter asked how exactly they plan on helping?Gwen and Liz should've thought of asking their fathers for some money.Instead of going to The Big Man,Peter should've thought of asking Norman for some cash,especially since Norman respects him like the son he wish he had instead of Harry.

The bell tower scene did originate from the comics. The "Not my problem" scene is similar, but a little different. In the comics he did let the mugger get away, but not because of some grudge with the manager guy. He just did not think it was his job. He was an entertainer, not a cop.

Part of me wishes Eddy had been infected somehow by the Symbiote even if he didn't have the full thing, it would've explained his anger better, but I do like what they went with regardless.
In the comics Eddie is a moralist hypocrite.
"You can't set it to that cold, you'll kill it" Really? The creature the can live openly in the vacuum of space can't handle setting the refrigerator dial to chilly?

As much as I love his episode I’m kinda tired of the conventional Black a suit storyline.
What I think would be an infinitely more interesting storyline would be one where Peter learns that the symbiote is alive and decides to keep it partly for selfish reasons sure but mostly because it’s a living creature that deserves an opportunity to learn and grow. Yes I know there’s a What If along those lines but I want one that doesn’t end in disaster.
After all the symbiote has long since been established to not be evil or anything, if Eddie Brock or Flash Thompson could turn it into a hero then Peter absolutely could.
