    RTV on a flexible “rubber” gasket? That’s shade tree, and invites trouble down the road.

      @alvinhah3367 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      What would be the proper way to do it?

    • @CrazyPetez
      @CrazyPetez 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alvin Hah Whatever the factory service manual says. Usually adding RTV to a gasket like that is NOT recommended. The stuff can get loose inside the engine, and clog oil passages for one thing. One use for RTV might be to put a very thin bead in the gasket groove in the cam cover, so the gasket stays with the cover. The operative word is THIN.

    • @alvinhah3367

      RTV...which stands for Room Temperature Vulcanizing...is a product used to fill voids in any composite to metal gasket surface. Rubber gaskets must "walk" in their designated area of sealing because of expansion and contraction. Using RTV is a typical shadetree mistake. I agree 100%.

    Hello Scotty! Could my Grand Vitara 2003 have a similar problem? My valve covers are leaking, the oil pressure sensor too. I have a "Small EVAP system leak" code. When i fill the tank or roll, there's no gas leak or odor. It was easier to diagnose on my 2003 XL7, the tank was leaking. On this one, it's less obvious. Gas tank apart, do you know what is the most common cause of such Check engine code on these small trucks?

      Yup, it's always good practice to use brake cleaner under the actual valve cover itself (NOT INSIDE THE ENGINE) and get all the sludge off before you put it back on. Otherwise chunks could fall in and ruin your engine.

    The engine covers can prevent dirt from accumulating in the spark plug wells. On the other hand, you cannot easily inspect for gasket leaks.
    When you remove the valve cover, keep the work area very clean and observe the torque specs when you retighten the bolts to prevent future leaks. I believe there is a recommended tightening sequence as well.

    Had a current gen Nissan Quest come in for a complaint of the transmission shifting gears like crap. It's that stupid Jatco CVT, but the transmission wasn't the issue. There is a check engine light on for running lean on both banks. The transmission is not programmed to shift smoothly when the engine is running lean. Found the intake snorkel between the airbox and intake manofold completely torn up. Everyone thought it was the CVT going out when they saw the work order on the computer. I thought the same until I saw the MIL.

      Stuart Jameson I did mine a couple of weeks ago. 2014 car and had done the whole course to fine sandpaper discs, then a few more steps with polishing compound. They had a white haze on them, so time to hit them again. This time I just used white tooth paste and two wet micro fiber cloths and one dry. I was done faster than just masking off the paint, the other way. (And with better results) Next I did our sons 2004, totally yellow lenses. It was almost as easy as mine. I could not believe, how much time money and effort I saved!
