- Tenchu: Stealth Assassins [USA] (Rikimaru Playthrough)
Prolugue
It was a time of great turmoil. Bitter wars raged as those in power sought yet more power, but only chaos prevailed. There was but one beacon of hope shining amidst the madness- Matsunoshin Gohda who ruled his people with wisdom, compassion, and jusitce. Behind the great man were two ninjas who were sworn to serve and protect their master to the death. Rikimaru, a leader of the Azuma Shinobi-ryu ninja sect, and Ayame, a young female ninja, sully their hands with the blood of the wicked and unjust far from the public's eye. This is the tale of two shadows of justice born unto darkness and destined to die in darkness.
Rikimaru
25 Year old
Rigorously trained from birth in Azuma Shinobi-ryu ninja techniques, Rikimaru has served Lord Gohda since he was sixteen. He has won the admiration of his sect for his thoroughness, patience, and bravery. For his Selfless dedication, he was granted the legendary Izayoi sword by the sect's master Shiunsai. He is usually easygoing and friendly to his cohorts, but once enraged he becomes terrifyingly focused and withdrawn.
All levels completed on Normal, Layout A, & with a Grand Master Rank.
Not meant to be a speed run.
Tenchu has some fantastic atmospheric music. Deserves much more recognition. 😎
Absolutely! I freakin love the training missions music!
From the same person who did the OST to Rurouni Kenshi!
Noriyuki Asakura also did additional music for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Great music and fun memories. Horrible graphics and mechanics tho
This game for some reason terrified me as kid. Not in a bad way, it actually made the game more fun. Just the fact you can't see more than 20ft ahead of you, the dark, empty streets until you see a vicious dog coming after you. I had a blast with this game at age 7, even though I couldn't get through I believe the 3rd chapter
Same. I think, i misunderstood the "stealth conception" when i was a kid
Me too, still look back on it as one of my favourite games, I think it’s the actual reason I really enjoy actually difficult games instead of difficulty selector games
Man when I was little I couldn't pass the first level lol
This is exactly how i felt about the Thrasher Skate and Destroy Demo!! It was eerie hyou couldnt see very far, no npcs, no music, but something about it made it so much more fun!
Yes. It terrified me because everything was so dark and ominous. I remember my older cousin comment when he saw Echigoyia saying, "Come on." He said, "That man is a doggone pervert." Lol
Rikimaru died with honor. No better way to die for a ninja. Beautifully made. I miss Tenchu.
My childhood was amazing and I'm thankful for that experience. I'm about to turn 30 and I still feel like I'm the same kid at heart
The music, the environments, the narration, the characters, they’re all very close to perfection. The atmosphere and music still makes my hair stand on end
Compared to now that voice acting is offfffffffffffff by a lot
@@cjallenroxs6239it’s perfect from a nostalgia perspective and for the time it was way above average
True nostalgia. I remember being so fascinated with the thought of a game about ninja's. There was no other game like it at the time. The good ole' days. Kids today just don't know.
"You are brave, but foolish. You will die."
is probably the best spoken line in the game. Onikage is such a cool antagonist.
Foreshadowing at it's finest
Who's here watching this in 2020?
One of my favorite stealth games growing up
I’m here from playing Ghost of Tsushima.
Sam here fam they need to remaster it

I get random memories popping up in my head.
🤩👍

I never realized how hilarious Tenchu 1's voice acting was, until now.
They really made up for it in the 3rd game though.
Also amazing soundtrack and graphics, beastly storyline and cutscenes
18 years later and they still haven't made a better ninja game
so true
I know! I played tenchu wrath of Heaven & was waiting for the next one, which was in the making. But they stopped! Argh! I don't play video games anymore but I would def love to play another sequel
Dude, Wrath of Heaven got a sequel.
in terms of "ninja" games ninja gaiden (quality) is superior to tenchu.
Sorry guys, but about ninja games, no one can beat Shinobido... That is the most perfect and complete game about ninjas... No doubts
Controls, melee mechanics, animations, graphics, music, voice acting, map design, difficulty - what's not to love? This is a jewel of a game and one that made the most of the PS. Thanks for uploading!
"Infiltrate the Manji Cult" was such a scary mission as a kid. The crying baby with the background music and those weird walking, fire spitting creatures freaked the fuck outta me.
Brooooooo omg!!!!! Yes i still dream about those things i havent played this in like10 years and i remember that part mostly
Dude it was so fucking scary!!
+Leng Moua So many great scary/tense situations and enemies in the different levels. The 3rd level in the snowy forest having to avoid the guards and the wolves to sneak into the cavern to rescue the other ninja. The forest had really great atmosphere with the way the sound and lighting was done. The cavern made me so tense trying to avoid the guards and trying to figure out the pathway. Then the giant frikin bear! lol
When I first tried Tenchu 1 I couldnt get the hang of his movement in fighting until I figured out the parry and backstepping.
The sound effects of nature and background noises were pretty well done to enhance the tension.
I may be recalling a level in the 2nd Tenchu, but the one with the burning castle that ya had to go into to rescue someone was kinda scary..then ya had to fight the bastard with the handgun! arrgh that was crazy
The music themes were great also.very well done.
I totally agree!
I came here in 2016 as I loved this game and its classic soundtrack (which is on my iPod) :)
i remember i had nightmares from the level lol
I remember being 5 and me and my dad taking turns playing this, one of my best memories

The Father of Sekiro Shadows Die Twice, the stealth, the one hit deathblows, the grappling hook. I had completely forgotten of this game but this does bring back memories. One of my favorite games from my youth.
Rikimaru was one of my favourite video game heroes as a kid.
Roy Sizemore Same here man, along with Lara & Duke Nukem.
Roy Sizemore Yay. Agree. Rikimaru of Tenchu and Samanosuke of Onimusha.
Koala Oh man how could I forget the demon destroyer Samanosuke!? That game was better than RE in every way and more, no joke...
Suzaku/Onikage is an awesome unforgettable badguy.

deeno bits indeed
Amen to that! Own a huge retro game library because of this..
And you had to grind to unlock everything
I came here after playing Ghost of Tsushima. I can't stop getting vibes of this game while playing it, and it triggered a bunch of memories of playing Tenchu at a friend's house a lot as a little kid. :)

It’s 2021 and I’m watching. This game took over my life for a while, I even started using “Show yourself “ outside of the game as often as possible. 🔥🔥
I used to say "WHAT! YOUUU!"
I used to answer my mother if she served up more dinner portions “dare iz more hear dan usurool”?
Gohda tests Rikimaru's skills by sacrificing some of his own men. That's gangsta.
Lmfao haha and ruthless
Right...that's why I try ghosting. It's not easy

Sad that gaming will never be the same for me
I wish i stayed young .. with my psx i ahd the best moments ever thank you sony
I remember playing this back in the 90s. Loved this game. It’s even better than today’s games
Not a single Ninja:
Rikimaru: *Beats everyone with the same 3 hit combo*.
AKechi : "It is an honour to be defeated by someone as skilled as you"
😂😂😂😂
Lololol haha lmao 😂😂😂
Rikimaru: using cheat
Akechi: sarcasm
You're an honorable man, and a skilled swordsman. It is a shame we could not fight as ally
*Proceeds to summersault over his dead body*
the equivalent of teabagging on the times of ninjas.
The music all through this game is great

at this very moment I am using it for study music
Agreed I love the soundtrack in this game.
It doesn't quite fit tho

probably tenchu z is what you remember
Buy sekiro, the graphics are updated :)
I know right? I still love it though! 🤣
It's a painful curse.
Tenchu 2 was graphically the best PS1 Tenchu game, just by the fact that the character's can move their mouths.
I remember thinking that fight music with onikage was killer. Still is...
Every weekend my cousin would bring this game to my house and I'd watch him play it.
Rikimaru, honorable ninja to the end.

Been waiting over 20 years for a ninja game as good as this, finally we have Sekiro, but I'll never forget Tenchu.
I'm pretty sure hidetaka myazaki said that sekiro was sort of a successor to tenchu. I hope we get sekrio 2 with more stealth elements

Haha yes! I still remember when he says that like yesterday 😂
Soundtracks outstanding. I loved the whole feel of this game, shame the newer releases lost its charm a little
This game was an absolute masterpiece and is still inspiring a legacy of awesome games in 2023 ! 🤯
This was one helluva videogame, super immersive. One of PS1 gems for sure
There's something different in the atmosphere of ps1 games. Something so soothing and timeless you can't get in modern games
The word you are looking for is “comfy”
One of the reasons is the graphics I think. Lots of liminal spaces, sparsely-inhabited worlds, and strange areas/textures that makes my brain fill in the gaps. PS1/2 games have a surreal, dreamlike quality.
I think music is the same! (especially house/dance music). Perhaps something about the lower bit rate sound/video compression just pops…
Fun fact: The voice actor who plays the narrator is also Alucard from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
Robert Belgrade?
Yes.
He does a shit ton of narrator/ announcer work as well. He did a lot of Tekken voice overs
NYG5 Only for Tekken 5 story mode. All those other "Good Morning" announcer/system voices I think are someone else.
THANK YOU! I thought it sounded like him and I was going to post the question.
This video made me cry :')I will always have TENCHU inside my heart
Nostalgia brought me here
+Radsoe 1998 Tenchu and MGS were the best games ever.

Bravo Activision, Sony Music Entertainment, and last but not least, Fromsoft. I bought this game the day it dropped in 1998 and though I loved it, I never beat it. Fantastic!
As a kid I went to my grandparents cabin in the mountains & brought my PS1 with me - I remember playing Tenchu & getting pretty close to beating it.
Gaming will never be the same as it once was...PS1 is the greatest.
+Red Nah. That's nostalgia talking. And that's coming from someone who once thought the same. Until he built himself another PC.
***** So limited though... no online multiplayer or anything :'( The variety was nice though... but I'm done with 20fps games to be honest. Rolling with an emulator and forcing them to run better is worth it for me to be honest ;p

Man I loved this game so much as a child. Ghost of Tsushima has me so nostalgic for it now and can we just imagine what Sucker Punch could do with a Tenchu game now?
When I was 13, I knew this game and now I'm 33, this is still the most memorable game I have ever played
Were you born in 1987? I also knew this game in 1999 when it was first seen in Vietnam.
The music was phenomenal for this game. Still incredible today, made the game so immersive.
Opening theme still haunts me when I hear it...
Yep…quite beautiful and original. I revisit this for the music alone sometimes!
This game should be remastered. If not a remaster then it at least deserves a continuation. I think the Tenchu franchise died after Tenchu: Shadow Assassins. We haven't had a Tenchu game in 5 years. And most of the ones that came after Wrath of Heaven, weren't that great.
Shadow Assassins killed the series.
***** Wrath of Heaven killed it, it made Tenchu stupid hack'n slash game with unreal super moves, giant bosses, immortal zombies and other stupid things. Shadow Assassins is good, only fighting system sucks in this game.
*****
You have got to be kidding me. WoH didn't even have giant bosses. WoH wasn't great but it was better than SA. If WoH killed it then why did why did Tenchu games release after that. SA came out and there hasn't been a Tenchu game since. THAT is killing the series.
***** There is no new Tenchu game because of idiots who played only WoH before (which is not even made by Acquire) and they were complaining that things are not like in WoH, when SA is more like PSX releases than WoH (in case of plot, quality of movies etc., only gameplay is different). And WoH had stupid bosses and one giant - headless samurai zombie, the one who designed this boss is an idiot. And in SA you have ONE plot, not 3 different (very bad) stories excluding each others. WoH was big step backward since Tenchu 2.
*****
SA was nothing like the PSX releases. It was a massive step back from those games also. It was shit both as a sequel and stand alone game. The bosses in WoH were bad but they weren't giant ones. The entire series had shit bosses anyway. I'll agree with the stories bit but that's it.
I'm 25 I remember in 1999 my brother brining this home I was about 8 and I got killed in two minutes and was hooked they don't make games like this anymore. Tenchu is a timeless classic I wish this would go on PSN as a download
Now you're 30, or near enough that makes no matter.
Easily in my top 10 games of all time. The soundtrack is a masterpiece. It was my first stealth game as a kid, I had never played anything like it. Being able to grapple to roof tops and go anywhere was really amazing to me at that time. Stealth kills were super satisfying, and the level design was fantastic.
I always played as Ayame, her two swords were easier for me to work with, I loved this game
I will never forget this game
Great music. The composer did the anime Knights of Sidonia as well.
pellergin name of the composer?
Noriyuki Asakura
Rurouni Kenshin as well.
I was like 6 or 7 when I played this, yet it still always stuck with me as one of the games up there with Metal Gear Solid as definitive of the Playstation experience. I still remember some of this.

Tenchu is the GODFATHER of 3D stealth games, and still pretty much the only TRUE feeling ninja game! So many people think it was Metal Gear Solid that gave birth to stealth in the 3rd dimension. Blasphemy will not be tolerated!
ncshuriken I wouldnt go that far. MGS was about stealth before the Playstation existed.
Prometheus Castles Metal Gear(MSX) feature 2D stealth. Metal Gear Solid(PS1) introduced us to 3D stealth.
Yep! Tenchu got MGS beat in the *3D* stealth genre by a good few months! 😎
@@gjtrue Not really, they were both released the same year but i guarantee MGS took a lot longer to develop. I loved Tenchu but the impact MGS had evolved the games industry as a whole, let alone the stealth genre.

For the longest I didn't know of its name, but I came across it online recently. Now I have the rom in an emulator, with settings cranked up for a more pleasing picture, having a killer time. Ive been trying to remember the name of this game for years! My aunt bought it for me, i played for ten minutes then my parents came in and took it away.
Anyone who played this years ago is no doubt still a gamer now. I was playing this at 8 years old. I laugh at the terrible voice acting now, but this game was awesome for it's time. That skeleton level with the big lady used to scare the shit out of me. Oh, and Onikage was such a badass. Always loved his scenes.

A game that deserves to be brought back and into the new age
This game pops into my head randomly makes wanna search tenchu in youtube
I rented this from a movie store and had a blast. I saved up doing chores to buy it. I can't tell you how many hours I put in. If I remember right you would get bonus items for getting grandmaster on the levels. I just had to get grandmaster on every level. By the end I truly felt like a ninja playing the game. Good memories thank you!
february 2018 and im here , i remember this game like it was yesterday
_Im not from the 80’s nor 90’s, however I dunno why I find this so interesting and attractive. It really expresses all the Shinobi’s Topic and Philosophy. I have see so many horrible games of Ninja-Samurai in my entire life that I learn to appreciate a wonderful work like this game. PS: The OST is gorgeous_
This game came into my life when I was about 13/14 years old back in Mexico , I remember I grabbed it as soon as I saw it .
Back in those days in Mexico , videogames were a sensation, everyone was crazy about the ps1 but games were very expensive , luckily for us there were cheap pirate versions of the games and I remember you'd had to pay like 10 USD dollars to install a chip that will alowe the console to play the games witch have a cost of about a dollar back in those days ( around 2000/2002)
I remember I liked it so much since the very beginning but I couldn't understand what they talked about , still it was amazing listening all dialogues and I always thought it sounded so cool.
I remember me and my uncle who was about my age , we both liked playing this a lot , and we would always replay all missions trying to do things in different ways , we felt like ninjas back in those days
We didn't know what was the plot all about since we didn't speak English but we understood we had to protect our Lord and save our princess , to be brave and cut our enemies , but most importantly , to live with honor
This game definitely was a very important part of my teenage days .
Now many years later am able to have the original game in perfect condition and now can understand what they're talking about.
Such a nostalgic feeling that this game gives me , oh the memories that come to me any time I play or see any video or listen to the music of this master piece
@dream 😁👊
I bought this on the release day way back when I was a young man, this ply through was a genuinely happy travel back in time for me. I remember playing this every single day for months on end. Stealth Assassin all the way.

Are you reffering to this or Birth of the Stealth Assassins?
I wouldn't minded if they released this again on PS4 just like what they are doing with resident evil series
Top 5 OSTs of all time. Every track was atmospheric fire. Fight ME!
Stealth Assassins actually had better songs than Wrath of Heaven now that i look back at it and i was Grand Master in both. Great memories!

My favorite stealth Kill is the Judo Bone breaking one. I also find it Hilarious that the Pirates in this game couldn't swim and would drown if you managed to push them into the water 😂😂
This was the first game I played on my brand new PS1 back in the day. One of the most advanced and groundbreaking games made for that system...and held up to any similar PS2 game to come. It wouldn't surprise me if this game influenced Ubisoft's "Splinter Cell" series that came later, another of my favorites.
I don't know why, but I had to see the ending again in 2024. It's such a great nostalgic video game.
