I was just 5 when my dad was transferred to Kalimpong, so I don't remember much. But remember my first school, St Joseph's convent. Darjeeling and Kalimpong will always be my happy nostalgia
Darjeeling and kalimpong the entire region is awesome and beautiful my mom born in siliguri so i know the entire place now living in delhi for a long time miss those place.
Hi Gabriel, that was fascinating and they allowed you to come in and look around. It was wonderful, a location that the Dali Lama visited made the visit worthwhile. Hopefully, you left a donation for the tour and visit. There's a little-known film called Little Budda which tells the story of how the Dali Lama is chosen and how they know the Dali Lama has been reincarnated. Both the Hindu and Buddhist religions believe in reincarnation which is one of the most interesting beliefs I find in these two religions.
Thanks Gabriel for sharing a bit of my morning together. I travelled India back before you were on the Planet, just a month after Indira Gandhis assassination (Nov.1984), it truly was a challenging & memorable time to arrive in country as the Golden Temple in Amristar, Punjab was stormed by the Indian army. My dearest friend and host Ramesh's family (Hindu) brought Sihks neighbors into their Delhi home to protect them from the rioting taking place throughout the city at the time. I travelled extensively around the country for nearly a year, even spent 2 months in Gulmarg, Kashmir skiing a glacier on the Pakistan front, recouping my sore mustles upon a House boat on Dahl lake in Shrinagar before returning to New Delhi to depart for new adventures in the Sinai Peninsula nd eventually back to America.
Awesome adventures. I was twelve in 1984. I didn't hear about the Indira Gandhi assassination at the time but remember Reagan's reelection that same month. I haven't been to Amritsar yet but visited Srinigar: www.youtube.com/@gabejedmo/search?query=Kashmir
These past 2-3 weeks of videos from Bangladesh and India have really resparked my traveller self from some kind of hibernation. This kind of travel is when I feel the most alive and I'm aiming to restart during this year. Travelling outside your usual surroundings and culture really hits different.
Gabriel, I supported the Tibetans fighting the Chinese for many years, beginning in the 1950s - 70s. as an aviator, ,many trips, carrying the Tibetans to Fort Carson, Colorado for intensive training. Later, after training carrying them back and air dropping them into Tibet to fight with the Chinese for their independence. I am extremely sad to say we failed.
You are right, Gabriel, the script of most Buddhist teachings is in Tibetan ( The Tibetan script is a writing system of Indic origin used to write certain Tibetic languages, including Tibetan, Dzongkha, Sikkimese, Ladakhi, Jirel and Balti.) which was adapted fr Sanskrit script ( Devnagari)...
Very polite and helpful people there!!! very interesting video, so hospitable monk!! i particularly enjoyed the colors, so vivid and joyful!!! and great music too Gabe✌👍💖✨
Fun fact: I used to always recommend Jacob's Creek Shiraz to my tables when I worked at an Indian restaurant in Northfield, MN... that last shot just hit me with a ton of nostalgia, so random
You’re without a doubt one of the most authentic travel vloggers out there. Keep doing what your doing bro. Been watching you for a few years now, and you’re the real deal. Really admire your level of commitment to traveling. ✌️
Another great video, Gabe. It's wonderful being in less touristy places. Did you ever go to Dalhousie in Himachal Pradesh? There are Tibetan refugees there too and it is a beautiful hill station with lots of small scale charm. Apparently it still only has a population of about 7000, while Darjeeling, Simla and other hill stations have grown massively.
By accidentally meeting the monk you ended up in one of the most interesting stops of the day. Less rigid travel plans often lead to the best surprises. I'm always nervous about eating in less tourist-ed towns - hope you'll share more about your meal choices, locations, and menus.
The places you bring us to constantly amazes me! I also notice how, in India and Bangladesh, people are always outside interacting and involved in community. The temples were unbelievable! Namaste
Tibet was part of Indian civilization and culture for thousands of years. Kailash mountain and Mansarovar lake in Tibet are where Shiva and many other great indian beings stored their wisdom and knowledge in the form of energy. these are most spiritual places in the world while visiting them people start bursting with tears of ecstasy.
5:00 Yes that is Tibetan writing. Nepali script is same as the Hindi, but they are 2 separate language. Just writing script same (Hindi & Nepali) - however, they're *2 different language* ..
Gabriel you seem very lucky spiritually, getting a personal tour from a monk and then most likely the Hindu temple was being visited by a Hindu monk of some prominence, stay blessed man, happy travels and I've subscribed to your content now.
Namaste would be the appropriate term in the Darjeeling hills including Sikkim as you are in a Nepali town just as you would say Namaste in Nepal. Namoskar would be more appropriate n Kolkata or in the plains of West Bengal but said to a Bengali person. if you meet a Nepali in the plains you're better off saying Namaste. If I’m not mistaken you did greet the Tibetan people on your trek in Nepal with Tashi delek which you could have used when you were in the monastery. No biggie but If you happen to visit a monastery in sikkim you now know what to say.
Wow, I don’t know much about Tibetan Buddhism, but I am familiar with Tomo Geshe Rinpoche, who you mention’s bed of three successive incarnations in the museum. He was a very advanced master and was all about the Buddha Maitreya the Buddha to come. Check out Lama Govinda’s memoir “The Way of the White Clouds,,“ he was a direct disciple of Tomo Geshe in the early thirties, and was one of the very first westerners to enter Tibet.
Wowowwowowowowow! Amazing city and so interesting to see the Buddhist temple as well as the HIndu one. Loved this video so much. So colourful. Thank you Gabe x
Gabe your vids have been so entertaining lately. Since Japan you've been going hard filming and editing I want to say I appreciate the effort you've got a viewer for life here.
Thankyou, we all feel we are walking with you as you take us to places we only dream of visiting. We love your history lessons on places, more, more, more. We must also prayer for Turkey and Syria, such sad loss. Enjoy your adventures.
Always surprised to see how friendly & open minded Tibetan monks are in opening & showing their temples & shrines, especially towards foreigners. ..Compassion at its best 😇
though Tibet is a Buddhist place but all the Tibetan deities are Indian Hindu ones with slightly modified name. when Islamic invaders attacked India and people were persecuted most of the sages went higher up in the Himalayas and Tibet to escape it and meditate in peace. They brought their deities with them.
wrong! LIE!! first buddhist sage who took the religion there was sage Atish Dipankar, and he had to flee from bengal due to NORTH INDIAN HINDOO INVADERS who launched the first persecution against his religion hindoo King Pushyamitra Shunga also was a butcher who took pleasure from be heading 10-20000 buddhists every morning! same thing also happened in south india as well …
Gabriel the monetary was beautiful! That you got a private tour was amazing. So very nice of him to do that. Were you able to donate anything? Do they even accept donations?
This place that I have never heard of is absolutely amazing. The timing meeting that monk was meant to be. As always your videos are excellent and very informative. I will have to visit this place before I get too old. It looks so peaceful and tranquil.
Gabriel: You were in the Himalayas last year and I remember you being sad that the air was so hazy, smoky and polluted. Now it is February 2023 and the Himalayas are again smoky, hazy, and polluted. Is it possible that in over crowded India and Nepal that you can only see the snowcapped peaks during a rare sunny day during the rainy season? How many days are clear enough to see the snow-capped peaks?
Last spring it was because of fires, this time it's because of cold winter weather causing haze. Apparently fall and spring are best. Probably a little luck helps. Hoping I'll get a clear day one of these days before I take off.
Gabriel you are visiting these places at the wrong time of the year. The haze as you call it is cloud cover as it's still cold there. So unfortunately yes you will have the haze this time of year .
I was planning to come here last spring but changed plans because the weather was rainy. Now it's hazy. Hopefully I'll have a lucky clear day. Otherwise I'll see the mountains another time.
Thank you for producing such a fascinating video! God bless that monk who took you around. At first I was afraid for you, thinking that he might lock you into one of the rooms he was taking you to. But I need not have worried, for he opened the temple for you and ushered you into a beautiful and colorful world!
That is a beautiful museum and the soundtrack is enthralling. Good to know that the Tibetan people have preserved their cultural traditions and hopefully they can reinstate it when the world evolves towards universal peace in the years to come.
I was just 5 when my dad was transferred to Kalimpong, so I don't remember much. But remember my first school, St Joseph's convent.

Diversity of India for thousands of years.
One of your best videos.
I am glad your sandals are still holding.

Hi Wilfredo, are you also a digital nomad like Gabriel? Do you like visiting india or is it not for you?
Both hinduism and buddism had stared in india

I agree. I enjoy all of his videos, but the subcontinent ones really inspire me the most!
My Condolences to the people of Turkey. Earthquake ruined so many
Gabriel,
I supported the Tibetans fighting the Chinese for many years, beginning in the 1950s - 70s.

i noticed that too!
Most important is, you tried.
So cool seeing the Buddhist and Hindu temples!!!

Ha, cool. I don't know if I'd had it before but it was tasty.
You know you're addicted to Gabe's videos when you check every few hours to see if he's uploaded a new video!
I can relate with this statement
I can relate especially when he's in this part of the world. He does such a good job in south asia.
Glad you are going to Sikkim - the state in India that grows & allows Organic foods only. And it is one of the most clean state in India!
Beautiful and fascinating! When a monk tells you to follow, you follow!
welcome back to India
Winter, historically, is the best time for trekking for Himalaya views. In 1976 the visibility was so different.
You’re without a doubt one of the most authentic travel vloggers out there. Keep doing what your doing bro. Been watching you for a few years now, and you’re the real deal. Really admire your level of commitment to traveling. ✌️
You can feel the adventures that this region holds.
Thank you for the tour Gabriel, I am enjoying the series. Respect to you and all in 🇮🇳 from 🇬🇧

Vaguely heard of it but no, never went there.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos Well, if you're ever in that part of the Himalayas again, give it a look.
Amazing episode. Random acts of kindness makes the most epic travel content. Love and respect from Norway ♥️

AMAZING!!! You are venturing to go where no vlogger has gone before! Dhanya-freaking-vad!!!!
I like the simplicity and quietness up there in the mountains.
Thank you Gabriel. I especially enjoyed the unexpected tour you were gifted in the Buddhist Monastery.

Kalimpong looks quite livable and clean. Wonderful sharing. Thank you!

Hope you visit again someday
Love the monastery and library. ❤
Love how intrepidly you venture.
The museum wall art is gorgeous, and the colours are perfect. I would wear the prints.
The only thing I enjoy more than you finishing off your videos with a cold beer, is finishing off some good ol Aussie Shiraz! great video!!!
I love it when you go into the Himalayas

I was planning to come here last spring but changed plans because the weather was rainy. Now it's hazy. Hopefully I'll have a lucky clear day. Otherwise I'll see the mountains another time.
@Gabriel Traveler there is a beautiful view of the ranges on a clear day. If you pop into the tourists shops you will see a postcards of the ranges.
Thank you for producing such a fascinating video! God bless that monk who took you around. At first I was afraid for you, thinking that he might lock you into one of the rooms he was taking you to. But I need not have worried, for he opened the temple for you and ushered you into a beautiful and colorful world!
