LYRICS
I ran down the road
Pants down to my knees
Screaming, “Please come help me
That Canadian shaman
Gave a little too much to me!
And I’m writing a novel!
Because it’s never been done before!”
The first house that I saw
I wrote “house” up on the door
And told the people who lived there
They had to get out ‘cause
“My reality is ‘realer’ than yours
And there’s no time in the present!
And there’s a black dog on the bed!”
I went to the backyard
To burn my only clothes
And the dog ran out and said,
“You can’t turn nothing into nothingness
With me no more!”
Well, I’m no doctor
But that monkey might be right
And if he is, I’ll be walking him my whole life
I rode to Malibu
On a dune buggy with Neil
He said, “You’re gonna have to drown me
Down on the beach
If you ever want to write ‘the real’!
And I said, “[Uhhhh…] I’m sorry…
Young man, what was your name again?”
Now everywhere I go
In West Hollywood
Is filled with people pretending
They don’t see the actress
And the actress wishing that they could
We could do ayhuasca
Baby, if I wasn’t holding all these drinks
Something about the way
Violet whips her hair
That makes me empty my pockets
Holding court in the corner
Burning twenties as if I was the mayor
Well, I don’t need any new friends
But I could really use something to do
So if you’re up for it sometime
I swear you wouldn’t have to be my muse
Heiddeger and Sartre
Drinking poppy tea
I could have sworn last night
I passed out in my van
And now these guys are pouring one for me
I never leave the canyon
‘Cause I’m surrounded on all sides
By people writing novels
And living on amusement rides

I caught this song on a college station, here in Kentucky. I'm 59 years old, and always happy to find new music! 🎶
I wish this would randomly play on my channel's
FJM is one of the best artists, met him twice at the airport now and had a drinks at the bar with the dude, he’s awesome!
Just checking in, in almost 2020 and he’s still alive, still has all his limbs and is still putting on amazing shows.
Listen man, I'm in 2020 right now, and if I were you, I would stay where you are right now.
William Sword that’s pretty good dude!
Yeah reporting from the future stay in 2019 if possible
Can also confirm. If possible go back to 2017
@@idontlikemilk284 Aye man, I'm in 2021 go back to 2020
This song is a masterpiece of lyricism.
He seriously has the best dance moves ever.
he looks so happy with his wife!!!
the coolest most secure man I've witnessed over the internet. I can only vaguely imagine my life as par to this man
+Samuel Keefe get over it
+Samuel Keefe
Yeah I think I'm in love with him
+Samuel Keefe .......you don't often read a top comment of this ilk. I'm with ya, Sam.
+Samuel Keefe start by not comparing yourself to others
Melanitta nigra why the fuck do I always see you on every music video on TH-cam
I think I love this video so much because it's nice to see FJM as a goober when he's usually so brooding.
He's my spiritual uncle.
lol
he's my spirit plant.
He's my spirit animal
He's my spiritual spiritual
This man has so much Bob Dylan in him. He deserves to be more famous.
How am I just seeing this video now?? Been listening to FJM for almost 10 years. Love it.
"...... *long drag of ciggarette*... This is where I fell the other day."
Great song.
Brings to mind Hunter S. Thompson.

Anytime I hear this song it makes me think of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
Love the (almost hidden?) Neil Young reference on the lyrics!
I gotta credit this song as a big part of being a young musician. I’d busk this and song original tunes down by the Mississippi after school.
I'm writing a book aswell! I'm calling it the year the earth surrendered
Is it good?
A mix of The Ballad of John and Yoko and Paperback Writer!!
Alexa And dont forget a handful of Dylan songs-Subterranean Homesick Blues etc
by mix, you mean... rip off?
I was picking up on a “Ballad of John and Yoko” vibe.
Reminds me of "The ballad of John and yoko"
.. which I love so i love this
I searched all the comments for this! I wonder if it was a conscious nod to ballad of yoko and john
@@jg-di5it Wow I forgot I made this comment! Glad were on the same wavelength all these years later lmao.
YESSSSS!!! THIS! I've been saying this for years, thank you for the validation!!
@@kennethkellner3261 my man!
Love this song for a while but it's the first time I've seen the video. THESE TWO ARE SO CUTE, I AM WEEPING
Josh, I fucking love your music, lyrics and overall you as a human. Thank you for existing :)
Thank you. I'm so, so happy now! Thank you!
the structure is so reminding of Paperback Writer, in a nice way
I sneezed 6 times hippie tripping in the early 00s... i proceeded to prance around to this song in my head! 13 years before it existed and what 7 before i discover it now. Fml
I would just freaking love to hang out with this guy! So much fun!
Perhaps. I tend to be a a bit of a "word nerd," myself. 😉
Memorable, fun tune that you'll have in your head for a long while.
Best avatar I've seen all year.
I'm thinking "The Ballad of John and Yoko".
I figured there wouldn't be any more videos for this album, but then he goes and surprises me with this. Awesome.
I keep expecting him to burst out singing Paperback Writer. This has to be inspired by it, the similarities are killing me.
I see where you're coming from, somehow though, I'm thinkin' The Monkee's.
jimmiemclovin Jesus it's practically the same notes and cadence as Paperback.
nicksjamin1 Yeah, well I can clearly hear it. Definitely not sayin' your wrong. You kinda expect harmony vocals singing PAPERBACK WRITERRRRRRR to come in at the right moment. Can't place the Monkee's musical song explicitly, it sort of sounds like a couple tunes, but more of a vibe with the proper musical tones than something specific There are references lyrically to both bands though. "But that monkey might be right" and well, I don't think he could get much closer to plagiarism than the title lol. I'm sure it crossed his mind.
More like the ballad of john and Yoko.
Still a good song though.
There’s no time like the present.❤
I'm writing a novel guys, 492 pages into it.
nice! that's never been done before!
Sir Butthurt you finish it yet?
?
?
?
Yes!! Let’s do this! I can’t stop now!!
This video cured my depression
3:43 just so much feels
This is amazing! Our go-to song for every occasion!
+sam lopezz shut up
My mind is going many places with this video.
He just keeps making me love him more and more 😫
This feels like a song Eels could've also sang... perhaps with a bit of an over-dub? Both are brilliantly sarcastic & genius. Big up Father John... already 2 masterpieces under his belt.
Oh, the awesomeness of this guy!
+Arualasalv cool clock
here is a man writing the real folks..........
I remember when I showed my little brother Elliott Smith. talking about getting high on amphetamines, swearing, it wasn't something that was commonly equated with the genre he presented it in. FTM's doing that here too, but to a much grander extent. I never thought i'd hear a guy sing a song about poppy tea.
I've known so many spectacular musicians who also had a tremendous wit and physical comedy about them. by intertwining those two strengths into his music FTM's making some really unique, cool stuff.
"bored in the USA" is a bit more obviously brilliant.
it's all such fun. such a fun album to listen to.
Patrick, on point observation re wit & physical comedy.
55,000 views? This is a brilliant song!!!
Best thing I've ever seen.
Talent is good but editing is god.
I heard this song and it sounded so familiar... after a couple hours I finally found it. Beatles - The Ballad of John and Yoko. Tell me that melodic rhythm in the first verse is not reminiscent.
I think Paperback Writer is a good fit also.
Totally agree! I immediately made a reference to that Beatles song when I heard the song
It's 2020 and we're in WWIII w a damn virus! Somehow Father John Misty makes it all seem ok..he's as real as it gets! Anyone else inspired to write a novel and ride amusement rides??
This song reminds of Ballad of John & Yoko with a country Chuck Berry feeling.
Looks like a man I would never be tired of
I'm a huge fan of music match-on-action, and that smoke puff matching the piano chord at 0:24 made me jizz.
you should check out the video for Cerulean by Simian Mobile Disco its all about "music match-on-action". its in my trippy music videos playlist where you might find some other videos you like as well.
Luke Bracken True say, I will keep that in mind, thanks.
hitchenss
The wind caught my window and made it slam at that very second, I only noticed because I was waiting for it because of your comment. So thank you I t
The shooting gallery shot is marvellous also.
Brilliant work!
I could watch a movie of just him Dancing ! fabulous stuff ♥
If there's one thing I learned from this video, it's that smoking is super cool.
I'm not easy to be freaked out 'cause I'm already gone! That's Fkn Awesome...Thank You! very much!
This sorta reminds me of "The Ballad of John and Yoko" by the Beatles.
haha I just wrote this and then I saw your comment right below me! :D
Same, enjoyable nevertheless
I always hear gonna buy me a dog by the monkees
Yes! I've been scanning my mind for the last 10 minutes to figure what the run-on lyrics remind me of!
holy I love this song
this is such a fun video
OH MY GOD!
This is my favorite song in the album!!! Greeeeat video!
I back FJM, I wish he would do another album like Fear Fun. So raw
father john can drink with me on weekends,. this video is quite surreal. it reminds me of the Beat Generation. it seems like everybody is writing a novel which is a shame. life should be experienced on the road not the page. yeah i have content too. i just pretend i can write poetry. he he.
the bard has spoken
gotta love this guy...and mark kozelek
Aubrey Plaza (watching herself) at 1:17! Also: Tennessee Thomas, Alia Penner, Christian Wargo, Casey Wescott, Ian McMurray, Emma Garr/Tillman, and Jenny O.
Love this tune kept ohio super chill for me....
he makes the best music videos
love the ballad of John and Yoko vibe
Fear Fun will be ten this year! Where did the time go?
This is where I fell over the other night
this clip should be extended to a movie
I was there!! Awesome memories!
I love this man.
Soon youll realize theres nothing to fear but fear itself.
This man ❤
I love this song
This is a crazy fun song. It makes me tap my feet. I like it.
Thanks for your awesomeness, sub-pop
Good stuff, Josh is great, looking forward to see more of him!
I love it.
Okay, I think FJ (can I call you FJ?) should advocate a remake of "Withnail and I." He gets it.
hell. yes.
Believe me, no one will mistake you for a woodsman once we all have to live there and the actual woodsmen declare Martial Law
@2:20 Matthew Houck cameo! Just awesome.
This is still my the song😉🍻😈
I love this because I'm actually writing and this song just appeared out of nowhere
we could do ayahuasca, baby if I wasn't holdin all these drinks :)
I love him I love him omg
"There is a larger metaphor in here... somewhere"
Good songwriter
Gee, this guy is awesome!
That Canadian Shaman.
Rode to Malibu, in a dune buggy with Neil, he said you're gonna have to drowned me down on the beach if you're ever gonna write for real !
¡Lo amo!
Love it!
Heidegger and Sarte, drinking poppy tea.
And when I remember how shy he used to be :)
i love htis so muchch
FJM videos never disappoint
1:57 is my favorite dance ever
Walking up to a faux tudor pub and a hearse is so timelessly LA.
"....and I'm playing hipster songs on my geetar...because it's never been done before..."
Is this a tribute to paper back writer by the Beatles? Good song!
Should have seen him when I had a chance
Ballad of john and yoko
I want to live the life he does haha.
easily the most hilarious artist around
