Great video. The encoder wheel opens by bending back the 2x plastic tabs on the grey piece that holds the red piece in place. But be careful as the tabs easily break.
Anyone have a link or part number for the encoder wheel on digikey? Mine was opened by the previous owner and the tabs are damaged. It's now held on by a cable tie

I found a couple posts that have a replacement number but no info if anyone has tried it, but they say it will work but you have to cut the shaft to fit.

Here are two links where I found this info.

It's close but no good. Part A11215RNCQ has 12 positions alright, but you can only click 1 to 12 then back 12 to 1 as there is a physical stop between 12 and 1. I've opened them up and the block is a notch moulded into the top and bottom pieces where there should be a little hole to allow the ball bearing drop in. Tricky to cut away the notched and add a hole for the bearing.

I take it back! Using a scalpel, you can cut the notch between 12 and 1 out. Then you cut the shaft down to size and It's a perfect replacement. I posted a mini video.

Did forgotten worlds always use both a spinner in addition to a normal joystick, or could it also just use a rotary joystick for control?

forgotten worlds had an 8 way joystick and a 360 spinner that also had the fire button built into the spinner. If it's possible to use a LS-30 type joystick you would need to add a fire button which games like Heavy Barrel has so I guess it would be possible but as far as I know forgotten worlds used the joystick and spinner combo.
