And it also make them as affordable as possible because I want people to actually play it and experience it the way it was meant to be.

  • @JustWasted3HoursHere
    @JustWasted3HoursHere ปีที่แล้ว +3

    My dream for years has been to build an arcade cabinet that can play ANY game ever released in the arcade with the same control types used in the original. Considering how many unique games have come out over the years with their own unique control systems, that may not be full possible, but it looks like it could get really close. It would have to have analog (for games like food fight with proportional speed) and digital joysticks (for most other games) or one that can function in either mode, two trackballs, two spinners (can be used for driving games and games like Tempest), at least one flight yoke (though the analog joystick could suffice) and probably some more I can't think of right now. That control board would definitely be crowded!

    • @SaviorGabriel
      @SaviorGabriel ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know how feasible this would be, but I wonder if someone could engineer an arcade control panel where parts can be easily swapped in and out as needed to suit any configuration.

    • @GlensRetroShow
      @GlensRetroShow ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely! And that's been my mission right now. I do offer
      Track balls, hall effect spinners, Hall effect push pull spinners, Star Wars flight yoke using hall affect technology, steering wheels, Tron joysticks, discs of Tron joysticks, we do have a analog joystick the past couple of years. Just haven't released it yet, 1 million gold coated buttons, you can try the rest, but when you're ready for the best you go! GRS

      @JustWasted3HoursHere ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GlensRetroShowI can imagine what such a control panel would look like: six feet wide, four feet deep... But still, that would be cool. And hall effect is so much better than potentiometer. I've already built one of Glen's sticks; I took an old wooden housing from a dead PS2 stick and used it to build a Tron stick with his Tron stick and matching spinner. It can play Ikari and the like, but it is missing some finesse to the aiming directions. So I'm thinking hard about this one. That "limited edition" is starting to suck my credit card in.

    This is awesome! Technically tho you could do this for many years with an Ultimarc UltraStik 360 using the rotary joystick upgrade kit. It was not ideal (had to be ball top, joystick is not micro-switched, etc) and between the stick and the rotary upgrade kit it is over $100 for a one player setup and that gets you just the bare stick without any enclosure or extras.

    Hey there. Just watched this video, and had a question I hope you can answer. Like you, I love Retro Video Games, and also like you, I want as an authentic experience as possible, and this is why I am building my own machines because the standard MAME Machines have the basic same layout that works more for console games, than individual Arcade games that have very specific set of controls like Discs of Tron, Atari/OG Star Wars, Spy Hunter etc. So, one of the games I want to make a control panel for is the very fist VS Fighter I ever played waaay back in the day - 'Karate Champ' - which has TWO joysticks per player. It takes two separate sticks to maneuver your player - but all the controller boards seem to only allow for one joystick. Do you know a way to configure two joysticks per player? If you have any info on this, I'd me most grateful. By the way - I love your channel and am a subscriber, fyi. Thanks in advance

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the kind words and for watching! 😁 If you're building a panel, don't limit yourself to joystick inputs - you're likely going to have a better experience with a keyboard encoder like the I-PAC. This gives you tons of inputs for multiple joystick directionals and buttons without compromise. amz.run/8ZFr

      @@GenXGrownUp Thanks for the link! So, I looked at the I-Pac - it seems to have '1 Up, 1, Down, 1 Left, 1 Right - as well as 2 Up...etc and 3 and 4. So am I to assume from looking at the panel and your reply/info - that I can use this panel to hook up two or even 4 joysticks - (4 if I wanted to make a 2-Player setup) and connect them to the connector inputs I listed above? Seems like it...if so I can make a mini/barcade cab for both 'Karate Champ' and another 2 Joystick retro favorite of mine - BATTLEZONE... -please let me know what you think. Any chance this'll work on a PS5? I'd love to be able to play paddle games on the Atari 50th Anniversary Celebration collection the right way.

      The GRS super joystick is just that it's a joystick that's digital and it's USB interface. So anything that can accept USB joystick should work. Now the buttons also are using a zero delaying quarter we built in, so that should also be recognized. Windows recognizes the joystick and the buttons. No issues.
      Also, the push pull is seen as mouse buttons so as long as the device can know what a mouse is the push pull would work.
      The left and right rotation, that could be seen as a mouse, or it can be seen as a keyboard input, or a joystick hat. Most devices can accept this as well
      In addition, we do have a sulfur application which you can reconfigure and configure just about every aspect of the joystick including what direction is up. So basically, as long as any device you have knows what a joystick is knows what a button is and at least a mouse it should work. It all comes down to whether the game you're using has it mapped properly. In most cases you can either map the program or using our configuration software. We can figure my buttons and switches and other items to match the game. So pretty high probability it would work. But if it doesn't let us know. We'll do our best to make sure we can make that happen.

    Ok, so it is a cardboard box, It's cool, but it probably won't last, so better to keep it stored away or displayed as a collectable.

      I would expect that ultimately, a regular user would mount these pieces in a cabinet. Providing the functional cardboard enclosure is really just a bonus so you can try out and use right away without needing to mount elsewhere. Or, as you noted, only to use occasionally.

    Okay, is this compatible with EVERY console and EVERY version of Ikari Warriors and Heavy Barrel? I wonder how many versions of both games are out there. Will this work on the NES Ikari Warriors and Heavy Barrel? I highly doubt it. Does it even work on PS4? This should have been a plug-n-play game with a library of games that use this controller. I guess for $80.00 and a lot of work, I'm not that desperate to play those game anyway, even if it is playing them with the right controls.

      Id love to. Probably about a year ago I purchased four products for GRS. After installing one of two four-eight Gateway joysticks into one of my arcade cabinets. The control panel stop working completely. I reached out to the "IT Tech support" listed. After sending two e-mails I received an e-mail back stating, "well it worked for me" basically with no help to resolve or troubleshoot the issue. So I took everything apart and reassembled. I couldn't even get the Pi to work in other cabinets afterwards. After two more e-mail they refunded my money and let me keep their crap. I throw it all out 0with the Pi. Keep up the great work Glen!@@GenXGrownUp

      @@cookiesusa3143 Based on the box? IMHO that's an unfair judgment. Providing the way to use the box as a mounting location is just an added bonus that was entirely unnecessary. While plastic would be nice, the price is beyond reasonable. A genuine SNK arcade stick alone can run you over $150, and here you're getting that plus an encoder for up to twelve buttons? I think we can afford to buy our own plastic box! 😉 If the box turns you off, pretend it doesn't exist, mount the supplied hardware in your own enclosure, and you're still ahead.
