Very well said. To be honest, I viewed the US the past few years as a country that is not catching up with time. A lot of things are so very old fashioned in my perspective. On the other hand: I have seen wonderfull movies and series, made in the US, very modern, very critical, and that reassures me that there are a lot of intelligent and modern people in the US who do want change and growth.
I am Bavarian and experienced a lot of that. sometimes we are too directly which is not understandable for some colleagues and they go into the protect mode but we just say what we think without stoty telling and we still like them.
In so many ways America isn't growing -it's stuck in the 1950's! As you say growth comes from interaction with others! Much of America seems to be going the other way!
In Denmark we have a saying, you got two ears and one mouth, because your supposed to listen more than you talk. Nobody gets any wiser by talking, only by listening.
I agree. One who won't want to deal with any criticism might be stagnate and not be able to excel himself. It's a form of weakness, yes. (Out of fear.)
Hard for me to understand: The complete disrespect of many Americans of other cultures. America's best, f*** the rest. At best, the rest of the world is exotic Disneyland. You can look at that and then quickly go back home, where everything is so samey and simple. The world has more to offer, but you must keep your eyes and mind open to see it. Great channel, great input! Thanks!
I moved to The US in 98 and since then I have grown educationally But I've seen a degradation in intelligence in American society on its possibly due to religion having a stronger influence in knowledge history has shown us every time religion rise in any culture individuality knowledge decreases
I find this a problem related to a cultural mindset where "discussing" with others is seen as immoral, confrontational(why thinking it that way if others are valuing you giving them their point of view?) or unethical. So far I've noticed that people suffer or make a bad face when you give them your opinion. I think it has to do with what people are told since they are kids: "don't question anyone", "stay quiet", "stay silent" etc.
Jay you bring a feeling of calm into a subject that is often so full of rage, anger, distrust and sadly one up manship, it doesn't have bragging, it very often isn't, I see it often and I have been confronted with it a few times, the topic can be quite mundane and someone relays a tale of getting into difficulties while swimming let's say, you relay your near miss with death, while fishing and the reply that comes back is "prove it or it never happened", no one is trying to get one up on anyone else, it's just the telling of a frightening experience in your life, nothing more, it's the lead up to the difference between the USA and anywhere else in the world and the madical treatment people receive at the hospital afterwards, but that American needs proof of something that is very unlikely to be able to be proven, it kills the conversation, it belittles the person who almost died that day, yet it only shows that if someone has had something extraordinary happen in their life then it has to be proven to satisfy one person, I don't know of anywhere else where this is the case, I'm not entirely sure what it is meant to prove, but it happens and it was only from a minority from the USA, some have started to ask the same of Americans and they don't like it and things start getting a bit angry where there is no need for it to be, it's a pointless question, it proves nothing, it adds nothing, conversation is killed stone dead, it'd never occurred to me that it was taken as not being right in some way, I'm still struggling to grasp that thought, but I'm sure that you are right about this, it sort of makes sense of a strange way to reply.
Imagine a world where no one contradicts you, all share the same opinion, all go the same direction, no more political parties, no more discussions with your partner on where to go out for dinner or spend your vacation: That would be the end of the world (as we know it). CONTROVERSY is what inspires people, makes them creative and inventive, and leads, no, not to a compromise, that would be lame, but to a solution that works for all. And then we start debating about the solution. -- That's why I hate opinion leadership. It narrows your perspective if you follow one opinion only and don't consider alternatives. That's not in the interest of yourself, your friends, your family, your nation, and finally, the world. Think for yourself, that's what I wanted to say.
A child is told from birth how beautiful, how clever and that it is the best. Then it come to school and finde out, maybe it is also said to it,it is not the most beautiful, most intelligent, the best. Then how can some child react?
A small sidebar point, California is it's own country for the most part. You move to the U.S. when you leave the West Coast to states that begin the boundary of Deplorable-land east of the West Coast (Certain parts of Colorado are the lone exception). As per the desire to be right all the time, you've a point but, when one is Genuinely right and some nimrod is arguing with you from the point of sheer indoctrinated Ignorance or is angry you're right and therefore has to give you grief, being Right is power and gives one the right to degrade the morons without any penalties. They're not going to learn or stop to rethink their truthinesses this day in age... This is War(!).
While US is exceptional with its exceptionalism (pun intended 🤣) - there are also similar concepts - la republique, viva España, Britain is not just Brittany, it is by definition Great Britain, and never forget the true German ambition - whatever that might be: Am deutschen Wesen mag die Welt genesen. my ego is important - whose isn't?
Not much to add! Perhaps that the dangers of the self-right-eousness are quiet nicely illustrated by looking at some current and former heads of various states all over the world who have surrounded themselves with people who always tell them that they are right. Whether they simply were not elected again or their policies have led them to economical problems or carry out actions that got them stuck in horrible disasters - you take your pick and you can see that listening and learning is a very necessary tool for real leadership.
We Americans feel we being the most powerful country in the world, we feel like we have the "right" to lead and thus feel we are always "right". Does this make sense??? I disagree of course but that's our typical American obnoxious mindset when we go abroad and start discussing and lecturing about world order and foreign policy in particular. Let's be honest, we are big fat bully!!
Thank you for this "daily dose" to not stand still. I wish you a fantastic pre *Yul(e) Fest* the orginal winterfest, before the church stole and renamed it from germanics
Everything that you mentioned in this video is true about U.S. culture. However, this changes nothing as nothing will be done about it. It will continue to remain this way. If you feel you cant function in American culture , you're always free to expat to another country where you feel compatible with the dominant culture. Therefore, resolving the problem.
Taking the stance that nothing will change just makes you part of the problem. Of course nothing will change if nobody makes an effort. You can't just sit down and wait for change.
Correct a fool and he will hate you. Correct a wise man and he will thank you.
Edit: Also, Dunning-Kruger is a thing
So true.
Also:
A wise one will learn more from a fool than a fool from a wise one.

I couldn't agree more, and I am German. It is very common.
In Denmark we have a saying, you got two ears and one mouth, because your supposed to listen more than you talk.

I am American and I experience this a lot
everyday and especially the holidays !
This warms my heart and I completely agree with you
I NEVER felt the need to be better than someone else - equality was more important to me - but I felt so alone ... often.
I like to be right, but I like knowing when I am wrong even more.
Thank you. Can't agree more.
great video as always! Thanks for the upload!!!
That ties in nicely with the previous video.

I am sure we all are guilty of this nowadays but in some parts of the world the level of it is just to much! We need to be more humble - 2023 Goal 😊
Sadly the need to be always right is an huge export of the US.
It's increasing in the rest of the world too.

Like always 👍👍❤️from Berlin
Your are so right, but how to handle this type of people, see Trump.😵💫

You are so right. US is the best, the greatest , the know it all. NOT. But all want to be that. More humble would be nice .
This fantasyland notion of "I'm always right" REEEKS of insecurity.

The need to always be right, IMHO, is pure ego-based. The question is: do you want to be right or do you want peace? Surrender!
