Tornado has such a special design.
And the Vulcan is both beautiful and scary!
Here in Tuscany, during the Falkland/Malvinas war, a Vulcan with no paint and signs flew upon my house VERY LOW going to North. An astonishing, terrific experience!

A few losses is not a high price to pay. Not at all. Keeping their heads down and keeping the idea of a low level threat on the map was a huge, huge contribution. This type of mission will always be necessary. Always. This is an excellent plane even today. Like the A-10, it fills a niche that will always be needed especially in environments where the enemy air support has already be annihilated

It certainly earned it's name with that roar. I was lucky enough to have one bank just over me at an airshow, it couldn't have been more than 50ft above and I felt that exhaust hit me like I had been shoved. It was glorious.
I swear the design just looks like a shark.

Funny enough: when I was in highschool I wanted to become pilot and visited the Luftwaffe in my region (open door day).
The pilots were really hating the Tornado. Not that it was not efficient. But they said, that it was massively underpowered, and that they even had to calculate the angles when flying more aggressively, because of stalls and a lack of thrust. They just were envying American jets like the F-15, F-16 or even F/A-18 for their performance.

    • @akiali2632

Tornado's r well known for their power. They certainly had more than any of the jets u mentioned. It beat the fa18 by 300lb's each engine so it had decent power but being a high speed/low level jet it was heavy n didnt focus on maneuverability but rather stableness for accurate bombing n stability for safety at those levels. Good aircraft for its intended role imo. One of the best.
Thing is that they then adapted a few as interceptors too which is a role they were not designed for but still managed. Jus shows how good the design was.

You make no sense at all.
You said: “Tornado's r well known for their power. They certainly had more than any of the jets u mentioned.”
This is not true. Just look at the numbers in Wikipedia.
YUu said: “It beat the fa18 by 300lb's each engine so it had decent power”
That is not true. Just look at the numbers in Wikipedia.
You said: “it did. As i mentioned the craft was heavy but that was by design”
As shown above, it did not. And "heavy" is a relative term. The Tornado gross weight is 44,622 pounds, only 122 pounds more than the F-15C, which has significantly more thrust and a far superior power-to-weight ratio. (And a max takeoff weight of 68,000 pounds).
You said: “It wasnt made as a dogfighter”
Yes, we all know that. This is the first correct thing you have said, but that does not make your inaccurate statements about its power and weight correct.
You tried to contest the original comment about Luftwaffe pilots relating that the plane was massively underpowered by making untrue statements about its power and weight compared to the aircraft the Luftwaffe pilots reportedly envied. The Tornado was not designed for dogfighting, but you can bet they had occasion to fly with and perhaps defend themselves against the aircraft you claim were less powerful, and they obviously could see the difference that you cannot seem to.

The eventual fate of the TSR-2 closely parallels the fate of the UK car industry as a whole. Bloated management, redundant "committees", OCD behaviours amongst said management....It seems there was and is, a malevolent push to make sure the UK does not create anything remotely resembling a "heavy industry". A country cannot thrive on past glories, and these so-called "service industries"....a country needs to crate, fabricate things of greatness.

I may be wrong but I seem to remember that during the first Iraqi war, the Tornados were being shot down so frequently that they had to raise their minimum altitude for bombing. This means that it was not made more resistant to ground fire like the A-10 was. Also, top speed in almost all jets is only for public consumption and not for normal use. I flew the F-4B and reached Mach II one time in five years because that was my allotted Mach run so that McDonnell could award me my Mach II pin. In an interceptor role defending a carrier or high-value target, top speed may have a role but in everyday use not so much.

I don’t know how old this video is, but the the Tornado was retired from RAF service in 2019. The 27mm cannon was a Mauser, not Aden. The TFR was not removed when FLIR and TIALD were fitted. The biggest result of fitting the FLIR was the loss of supersonic performance, but on the plus side, it meant the complex and unreliable engine intake ramp system could be removed.

I hope you realise that Australia would not be the country it is today if the UK had never made it a colony. If you are an aborigine you may understandably not see this as a good thing.
I'm getting a little bit sick of hearing people complain about the UK's colonial past. You do realise we were not the only country to have colonies. Here is a list to remind you, France (90), Portugal (52), Spain (44), Netherlands (29), Germany (20), Russia (17), Denmark (9), Sweden (8), Italy (7), Norway (6) and Belgium (3). Even Scotland had a failed attempt, yes England had the most at 130. But that doesn't mean we should be the only country to receive criticism. At present France still has the largest overseas colonial empire, but I never hear them receiving any criticism, it's always aimed at the UK. How much time has to pass before people will let it lie.

Really? In what historical facts suggest that the 2 were even similar? Different missions in different countries with different historical backgrounds in aviation. The UK was looking to consolidate its years-old industry, while Canada had a comparatively shorter history. Canada cancelled Arrow and substituted an imported aircraft. The UK cancelled TSR2 and replaced it with....a domestic aircraft. All they really have in common is that both were extremely expensive projects that nobody else was interested in, including the respective developers of each plane. Canada wasn't interested in an interceptor version of TSR2, and the UK rejected Arrow.

Yes. Because we have the resources to sustain the operation, from money to geographical. Also, the USA is comprised of immigrants from Germany, England, etc, etc. That being said, our technological innovation is pretty much unmatched at this point in history. But listen, I will never question/doubt/criticize the intelligence, innovation, or inventive ability of the German people. So not really wanting to argue here. Just putting in my 2 cents of support for my country, the USA.

I feel like the TSR2 and the Avro Arrow both fell victim to bloated budgets and political blaming. Both could easy have challenged the American designs of the day. Had they become full production programs they may have been hugely successful as both indigenous aind export programs. Both were gorgeous planes.....sigh to political short sightedness.

Strange how the TSR2 project failed, when the international Panavia project succeeded. Both projects were the result of aerospace consortiums. I was unaware that the U.S. was an influence in the cancelation of the TSR2. Seems that we killed it along with the Canadian Arrow in order to sell planes. This put America in a position of aerospace dominance throughout NATO. Was it a good thing? Our birds are the best, but that almost wasn't the case.
Britain survived the battle of Britain due to a firm commitment to air superiority. They had a talent for making the best aircraft in the world, and undoubtedly the best areo engines in the world. But as the sun set on the British Empire, England had to become more practical. Too practical. Here in America, I'm hard pressed to purchase anything that is made in England. How do Brits make money anyways? Their people are talented, but muzzled by an overly liberal government. At least they are still awesome at making engines, and British electronics are still formidable. I'm sure England still has much to offer in the realm of aerospace, but their independence is gone.

    • @winternow2242

You may be unaware but I saw how the Skybolt program was dropped at a meeting of the two heads of government and Britain was told to use Polaris.
The TSR2 could never have gone over target and returned. It was the first stage for the cruise missile with the Hbomb on the tip.
      Tomahawk does a single trip.

The versions in War Thunder are not the fighter version.
The fighter version is the ADV version, not the IDS and also not the Marineflieger version.
(Although technically the ADV is more of an interceptor than a pure fighter, much like the Mig23ML, but atleast it is much more of a fighter than the current ingame versions are)

Meanwhile, after Desert Storm where the Tornado performed a very important role where it was asked to do LOW LEVEL strikes against Saddam’s airfields using ordinance only the Tornado was equipped to deliver, it was phased out of service to be replaced by the Eurofighter Typhoon.
The Tornado was top notch in its day but by the new century it was obsolete.

@13:11 I mean, the F-15C literally fit the bill... literally. The exception is low level of which the F-4 was EXTREMELY good at, one of the fastest bastards on the deck, and its massive nose was equipped with terrain following radar during the development of Wild Weasel mission roles in Vietnam.
The Tornado was amazing but I wish these features were realistic and look into the serious political plays that happen here. The Union was forming in the lead up to this and the promise of propping up Panavia was a boon for jobs, jobs which garunteed votes.
If the British wanted air defense, the F-15Cs were perfectly fine. If they wanted ground interdiction, F-4s worked too (though the engine swap was stupid and yet AGAIN, this was political agenda because they wanted to justify having a British F-4 program via jobs and Rolls Royce was happy to put lobby money behind that...)

This telling completely omits the role of the KGB in the cancellation of the superb aircraft. How the heavily infiltrated Labour party and TUC were central to the plot. The soviets were terrified of the nuclear threat it posed and needed it terminated. They also wanted the research. Labour spies gave them both .
