    Thanks for acknowledging that these characters experiences are normal for some teens out there. A lot of people say it's a shit show because it's unrealistic and romanticizes this type of behavior but just because it's not realistic to most people doesn't mean it's not realistic to some. People just see the sex and violence and drugs and don't dig any deeper.

    I think it is important to note that no one has ever threatened to go to the police about Cal. Nate has been the only one throwing out threats. So that's an additional layer to his manipulative personality. Ultimately, Fez beat up Nate for calling the cops on him when all Nate had to do was leave everyone alone. But he can't tell his dad that.
    ETA: I totally forgot about the conversation with Rue. I will say that's not why Fez beat him up and Nate knows that. Nate is still manipulating things because that is just who he is.

    • @heligolightly
      @heligolightly 2 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      In the season finale Rue specifically told Nate the she has no problem going to the police and telling them that his „daddy“ „likes to f*ck little kids“.. so.. kind of. The fact that deep down Nate is deeply insecure for many different reasons just leads to him feeling the need to protect himself and his family so that no one will see them for what they really are. He wants everyone to see them as these strong, dominant alpha males. And that video.. well :D

    • @AnxietyRat
      @AnxietyRat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Well...rue did. She did explicitly say she would go to the cops if he didn't leave jules alone. In their little balcony/stairwell convo last season. But she only threatened that bc nate was threatening to go to the cops about Jules CP, I think....but yeah...he didn't lie. He just left out his own actions that caused the threats to be made in the first place. Which is in character for him and very manipulative.

    I honestly just want to grab Cassie and give her the biggest hug. I know she is being such a shit friend to Maddy right now, but I can't help but look at everything she has gone through, especially in her teen years and empathise. She knows this going to hurt Maddy soo much and she knows Nate is not the greatest guy and yet she is still pursuing it? Part of me looks at her right now and just can't help but see my own self destructive behaviours at that age. I really don't think she's doing it hurt Maddy, I feel like she's doing it to hurt herself.

      Another important thing is that Kat never tries to tell Ethan stuff that she wants them to try, probably because she doesn't want to scare him away. 9:23 I’ve been thinking about this and considering this so much because what I see on Tik Tok and what my friends tell me. It really infuriates me because I have mental health disorders that make it very hard for me to believe positive things and see positive outcomes. So it kind of scares me when people say you can’t expect someone to love you if you don’t love yourself. Like I won’t ever be in a relationship until I fully love myself but that is incredibly hard for me to do because of how my brain is wired and balanced. I just wish the self care movement/ aesthetic reflected on more aspects like how to have self care with mental health issues. It just feels like it’s only made for people who need quick fixes like reading and walking or working out to love themselves. I don’t know, I’ve just been thinking about it a lot.

    I honestly find it deeply upsetting the way people just brush off how Cassie was too drunk to consent to sex with ANYBODY at the New Year's party, because they don't like her behavior now and don't seem to understand that Rue's voiceovers reflect what a character believes to be true, not necessarily the actual truth (I mean, hello Nate and his it's-all-Maddy's-fault hospital moment).
    This girl was stumbling around, falling out of her shoes, even before Nate poured more beer into her. He had to help put her clothes back on after they almost got caught, for crying out loud! I'm not condoning or minimizing the destructive choices she's engaged in since, but Jesus, that doesn't look like "not all that drunk" to me.
    Is it really so hard to believe that Nate would be predatory and exploitative? Or that Cassie would lie to herself in order to excuse a man she craves validation from?

    • @1234demilovatofan
      @1234demilovatofan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yo... This wasn't even a thought I had because I was thinking about so many other things. Cassie's destructive choices, Sam Levinson pair Cassie with Nate. I didn't even think Cassie was doing any good or really processed her feelings after her abortion. That effed up.

    • @AJ-zg1nq
      @AJ-zg1nq 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@1234demilovatofan Sam pairing Cassie and Nate makes a hell lot a sense. Cassie has a lot of issues regarding her sexualization, men treating her like a doormat, lack of self respect not to mention her abandonment issues accompanied with the trauma of going through an abortion. She has always let men walk all over her and is a people pleaser. pair it with someone as manipulative and self serving as Nate and viola you get what actually happens in real life. Men like Nate don't go after Maddy in real life but they go after the girls like cassie because even if you treat them like horribly, the childhood trauma of abandonment and not being good enough for their partner will not let them leave the said abusive partner.

    Nate seeing Maddy as a “chaotic and traumatizing” individual whereas Cassie is seen as a more “normal girl” reflects the trauma that women of color go through! Nate highlights how he sees a future with Cassie, but not Maddy. It’s almost as if Cassie is that white, blonde girl fitting the American dream that is CLEAR in his dream. But with Maddy, she is the “spicy and exotic” Latina fetishization phase for Nate. In season 1 when Nate tells Maddy that his family doesn’t like her, she was genuinely confused and upset. This was before she threw the chili. But when Nate brought home the blonde girl, automatically his parents “liked her”. Nate’s parents saw Maddy as a distraction but told McKay that he needs to “work extra hard to keep a girl like Cassie.” It’s wrong for people to be defending Cassie alone and listing Maddy as a villain. It demonstrates the power and manipulation of white woman tears and the stereotype of “crazy” Latina women!

    One thing I observed and would like to know your thoughts about: Lexi’s mum is an alcoholic. How do you think that will affect Lexi and Fezco’s relationship, as they both have that common background of being around substance abuse. Lexi seems to be an old head on young shoulders, like Fez, yet she seems to reject drugs/alcohol (at least, I can’t remember an instance where she uses them) and is very prim and proper and, as it shows in this episode, is very passive. Very curious where their bond is going, and how their upbringings will affect their relationship.

    I literally just noticed this about the music, but at 12:11 it was playing the reverb sound effects of Nate’s Theme as Cal was entering the store. Many people have joked it sounds like a guy wànking, which I actually kinda agree with. It’s like the combination of this violent slapping sound and masturbatôry motions, which - hear me out - seems like a callback to Cal’s tapes. Like the volatile and destructive part of Nate, as well as his intense internalized homophobia and insecurities around his sexual performance, stem from his father’s influence (the violence he exhibits towards his sexual partners). It’s literally embedded into his theme, but is then isolated and played back during Cal’s nearly violent confrontation with Fez, connecting the two back to each other. Just an interesting musical detail to note, I might be reaching though.

    This was a really great vid-thanks so much for sharing! I think the reason Nate didn’t answer the question at the end was yes, to jerk his dad around but more importantly, he doesn’t have the tape! Cue the dysfunctinal relationship with Maddie…

    it's interesting to see the beginning of this episode when you compare it to the beginning of the last episode. Nate's family from the outside looks so perfect, and Fezco's family just looks like criminals. But Fezco never doubted his grandma's love for him, no matter how she treated other people, while Nate never felt loved by his dad.

      Hi! Some do, some don’t. I definitely didn’t mean to discourage anyone from going if that’s what happened. I was in and out of AA/NA for years and took people to them for many other years. I’ve seen people be asked to step outside (someone stays with them) if they’re nodding out or highly intoxicated. But yes, I could have mentioned and will here that the only requirement to attend is a “desire to be sober or clean”. ❤️

    I have a question about what you think Maddie’s role is in contributing to the toxicity of her and Nate’s relationship? like what he mistakes and things are? with Nate it’s obvious that’s he’s abusive and manipulative but how is Maddie contributing negatively?

    • @user-mz9iy9py6m

      yes exactly how is it maddy's fault

    • @the.truth.doctor
      @the.truth.doctor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It was strange when they said that in the beginning of the episode: implying Nate would have been better off without Maddy. They didn't give any context, however it is possible. It's not intentional on Maddy's part though. Nate has a desire to have his life be chaotic and his relationship with Maddy was just that (e.g their constant fighting and physicality, etc). I also think Maddy's impulsiveness and violent behaviors (not saying this judgmentally, just sort of what they were highlighting in the show with her attacking people) make Nate able to act that way in the relationship too, as though Maddy wouldn't leave him for being exactly who he is. Maddy just simply being herself gives Nate permission to keep being the same. It's not her fault though. I hope that helps!

      @@the.truth.doctor I also think that Nate's dad has taught him that women should be submissive and the fact that Maddy is willing to disagree with him and argue with him shows her as a woman that is not totally submissive while Cassie is more easily manipulated and emotionally weak, so she will be less likely to challenge Nate's absolute dominance

    I wonder how Nate could, if he sought help, deal with the trauma of having sexual imagery involving his dad be an integral part his burgeoning sexuality. And how similar is his situation/psychology to how a person (not everyone, obviously) might react to childhood sexual abuse. Cal didn't sexually abuse Nate necessarily, but he did sexually traumatize him. Other aspects of Cal's parenting explain much of the narcissism and manipulative elements of Nate's personality, but I think the sexual trauma is the heart of this very messy picture.
    As a related aside, though I think Nate's preoccupation with Jules and intense repression of any feelings for her is partly because she's trans and he is pathologically obsessed with heteronormativity; I think the bigger trigger is that Jules was roped in to Nate's sexual shame when he watched the video of her and Cal. To be blunt, those videos had been arousing to him since he was little and he was aroused by the one with Jules. And I can understand why he just cannot handle that psychologically (though it doesn't excuse 1 second of his behavior).

  • @Metyourmatch
    @Metyourmatch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There was actually a really significant scene at the beginning of this episode when we see him on the stretcher when rue is describing Nate’s new found love for Cassie. If you look at Cassie and Maddy’s hands you can see that Cassie’s hand is covered in his blood while Maddy’s are clean and freshly manicured. This really gives an insight into Nate’s psyche and what personality traits he considers worthy of love in women. His relationship with Maddy is rocky because they are too similar they both need to maintain control in order for them both to feel like life is okay but they do it in different ways. Cassie from what we have seen in the show has serious abandonment issues and is willing to become whatever and whoever a guy wants in order to have his love even when it’s destructive. Cassie literally has Nate’s blood on her hands and she doesn’t care and THAT is why he loves her.

    The sponsor not answering the question, withholding what he knows, is that lying?

    • @the.truth.doctor
      @the.truth.doctor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's withholding information which isn't kind to Rue's mother, but also isn't directly lying. I would say it could initiate the same appropriate response as if he did lie though coming from Rue's mom. I think with my analysis of him not wanting to lie directly as it could jeopardize his recovery was his choice to also try and help Rue with her recovery by not shaking up her home environment. However, we also see that when Lexi wasn't upfront about Rue's use then Rue OD'd shortly after that. It's so tough to know what to do for someone when they are actively using.

      I actually like that Kat's insecurities haven't just disappeared. Progress often isn't linear - it has its ups and downs. Kat herself said that her confidence before "wasn't real", which I think implies that she was kind of putting on a "mask" in the last season. This helped her have the courage to do things she otherwise wouldn't have, like talk to Ethan, and it definitely helped her gain some real confidence too, but didn't erase her lifetime's worth of insecurities. It seems like her dissatisfaction with Ethan is fueling her self hate too. She seems to feel bad about wanting more.
