Yes! As a Pilates teacher for 25 years I can confirm it’s really important to focus on isolation of these muscles first and foremost whilst relaxing all other muscle groups, especially glutes, abs, rib cage and shoulders ANd whilst keeping your back flat with legs bent and spine in neutral. It helps to contract on the exhalation... Inhale prepare, exhale contract, inhale release, etc. Once you have that down you can add on other muscle groups, lower and upper body, to increase load. The pelvic floor should be the foundation for all of your movement, focussing on that first and building all the other muscle groups on top. Engaging it first automatically engages the deep spinal musculature and transverse abdominus which protects your spine during exercise.
I teach that like smoking from anus …well effective way to explain the motion …. biggest mistake is people trying to squeeze butt cheeks or lifting the shoulders instead of focusing on correct muscles down below ..!
