Fun fact: The kookaburra's "laugh" is actually a verbal display of dominance which tells other kookaburras to get out of their territory.
So basically, the kookaburra was yelling "GET THE F*CK OUT!"

My girlfriend found a Blue-Winged Kookaburra that had been kicked out of the nest before she had feathers or opened her eyes. We raised her and released her in the backyard. She found a nesting tree just down the river that we could see from our back stairs. After a year she had a boyfriend and would bring each year's babies to the backyard for food. She and the bubs were so comfortable with us that they would fly onto our arms. Wonderful experience.

@@kevboard this is the precise way to present statistics in a way to fool people - without context. People interact with thousands of dogs during their life, while 99.9999% of people have never interacted with a platypus in their whole life. The only thing we can say is that the chance of getting killed by a platypus is less or equal to the chance of interacting with one of them. Nothing more, because there is no data to extrapolate actual mortality risk. The minimum for some statistics is to test over 5%+ of the population that the statistics applies to. For sure we don't have 5% of people that have interacted with a platypus.

I think you're thinking of Magpies. They are known to swoop people, and are very territorial and protective of their young if you walk through their area, but they don't go for pecking out your eyes. Quite the oposite, if they see anything that resembles eyes they will swoop from the other direction. If you put a pair of sunglasses on the back of your head and a pair on you're eyes there's a better chance they will leave you alone.👍🇦🇺

I've never hugged a bird but there was a little house sparrow stuck inside a place I was working one day. It managed to get in through the doors we had propped but kept flying into the windows trying to get out. So I slowly approached it, cupped it in my hands and carefully held onto it while my buddy got a picture before it slipped away and flew off. Very cool experience and I appreciate the little guy not pecking or biting at me like I fully expected it to do. On a closer look a the picture, it looked like it may have had an injured wing or just an injury in general, but it seemed to fly just fine

I have the same bond with one of the eleven Magpies that visit us all day, everyday. She snapped her leg in two after being caught up in a pine tree. Little Maggie pops in the house and announces herself with a massive warble.
We also have Kookaburras, Tawny Frogmouths and massive Owls all drop in to say hi regularly.
    Fantastic video, thanks Brad 🙂

They also accept bribes. They'll generally knock it off if they're offered food.
