I'm a Senior lady of 74. Last July an apartment opened up for me in a suburb near my old home. I had signed up for it 2 years ago when I had sold my house and went to Chicago to live.I had 8 cats and refused to give any of them up. So my sister rented me the apartment where my parents had lived. I waited there until most of my fur babies died and an apartment opened up. My waiting list was 3 years. And it happened just in time. I had 2 cats left when I got the call to move in. The place was perfect for me, ESPECIALLY the tiny patio garden that I acquired. I just planted a row of Morning Glories next to my privacy fence and in front of them, I planted red and violet petunias and red and white geraniums to go in large planters. My daughter even bought me SNAPDRAGONS, one of my favorite flowers. But the best part, I set up a bird bath from the saucer of a large clay flower pot. In 2 days, I had my first Robin. He has been coming ever since and with a companion. I can watch them from my patio glass door and now even little sparrows came to bathe. They make my garden ALMOST complete. This morning I heard a woodpecker somewhere on one of the trees nearby. We are surrounded by large victorian style houses with very tall trees. By evening, I was getting ready to make my dinner when I happened to look out to my garden and spotted a humming bird darting around a feeder I had placed for them with nectar. I just new all my flowers would attract the loveliest of all God's creatures, humming birds. Now my garden is perfect. I love my little apartment and my little garden.

@@fluffypeanutcat Also, I liked your bath. Structured just right, for birds to gradually inch down to the water. Did you make it yourself? Bird baths are expensive!
Yeah, it was great to see it slip twice and summersault into the water. I was so mad at it for going after the Oriole chicks. Watching all of this from kitchen window and I almost went outside to chase Robin away. Glad I didn't.
Thank You. As we had plenty of water this year not as much bird bath action but I had lots of action with Orioles on Jelly feeders. Also late summer had Humming birds migrating though and using my feeders. th-cam.com/video/4ZaruHcT7n8/w-d-xo.html
Thank You. This was taken probably near it's molting period in 2017. Feathers even more brilliant earlier. The male and female have identical plumage th-cam.com/video/Nekt9vXler8/w-d-xo.html
We have two red headed woodpeckers that frequent our feeders almost daily. Up until they showed up I've never seen any in person before. Their heads look like velvet when the sun 🌞 hits them just right.
That is great. The male and female are identical in plumage. I am guessing they are raising young in tree cavity nearby. This time of year though young might be out of nest. I have had a pair around the last 5 years or so. Mine will eat sunflower seeds as well as Jelly put out for the Orioles.th-cam.com/video/qdnNPjXnqyw/w-d-xo.html
That little robin in the beginning was so funny with the way he was flipping around compared to how the woodpecker started with his face and worked his way down
Robins seem to go all in when they bathe. The Red Headed woodpecker legs designed for climbing trees not standing in Bird Bath so they have to be more caustiou
The Red Head definitely did notice it. I think a flashing recording lite might have spooked a little. There were a couple of times birds landed on the mount the camera was attached to. Thanks !
My cat is watching with great interest! So fun to watch for me too! I have 2 birdbaths that i fill twice a day. It will be 112 on Wednesday! My front garden is shaded so it becomes an airport!
Karl Krueger We recently stayed in Sedona and its dry up there too. I filled a giant water pan and at sunset a group of 15 Peccaries and 4 piglets came running up and all those snouts slurped up 3 gallons! What a treat.
who needs netflix when you can just put a birdbath and a couple bird feeders in your backyard and watch nature in peace and quiet. very relaxing and entertaining at the same time
You know I had to think about that as usually recorded 30 fps. Soemhow I put file in a mislabed directory. When I found it low and behold it was 60fps. You're Welcome
Thanks for pointing that out. I could see him twisting his head and looking and always thought it was only the camera. I now see he hopped right over to get a closer look at the yellow painted cement duck. I always forget too, that interestingly the male and female redhead are marked exactly the same.
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing! You inspired me to create a bird bath in my backyard where cardinals usually hang out. In the spirit of nature, I will not try to scare away Robins or Orioles, but any animal with the word "cat" in it, is dead here.
I would like to offer a suggestion. I did this when I made a deep birdbath and built it up with stones. Put a small water pump (solar?) in the bath to keep the water from getting stagnant. Really enjoyed the video!!
Thank you. I did use one(not solar) for about a month before it burn't out. It really was nice to have the water moving. Do you know of a good solar pump to buy. I think some birds do prefer to have moving water. Link to video where at 2:24 shows effects of pump I had, th-cam.com/video/9W2Du1xN06g/w-d-xo.html
@@fluffypeanutcat Hi Karl! There are not a lot of choices that I can find, as I recently considered getting another birdbath. The solar ones I looked at floated and were kind of big. The thing that I used before was a water jiggler that uses a 9-volt battery. It is not without its drawbacks, either, though. Depending on many factors, I'm sure something could be MacGyvered, like some kind of drip line from above maybe? Any engineers out there?
Wonderful video with a great variety of birds. Never would have guessed this was in South Dakota. I am thinking of getting a video camera and I sure like the quality of this video. What camera are you using here?? Thank You!! Ken in Oregon
Thanks - These certainly are not Prairie birds as one would expect in South Dakota. Shelterbelts that were planted (this one in early 50's) have made a difference and offer habitat for all kinds of song birds. Sad to say that a lot of the older tree belts are being ripped up by the larger farming operators. The dead and dying trees at the farmstead we live on are ideal woodpecker habitat. My camera was a Lightdow UltraHD 4K (this model currently not available). An action camera similar to a GoPro but only $30 on Amazon. Here is a TH-cam review: th-cam.com/video/CikSF_47Fpw/w-d-xo.html I used to rely on the motion detection feature but now I just set within focus distance and see what I can capture in an hour. Check Amazon reviews on the different brands that are sold on Amazon. Here is a link to a little more expensive one. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BF76DSX/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
😭😭 I love the feathered creatures so much!!! I used to have feeders and a bird bath when I was a child but alas life has caught up to me and I don't have my own space. :-(
@@fluffypeanutcat absolutely they are so pleasing to watch for hours on end! Sometimes I feel like a cat just sitting there and staring at them like prey haha. I saw the Oriole and I was so jealous! I never saw one but I used to live in Baltimore for a few years as well. What neck of the woods are you in?
in order of appearance, Cat Bird(aka Cop birds), red Breasted male american robin, American Goldfinch, cat bird(again) then the red Headed Woodpecker( this particular type is on the endangered species list)
Thanks for watchin. There was a Male Baltimore Oriole that did fly in to first scare the Cat Bird. It's colors are a little off as late summer and near molt. The little ones that look like the Goldfinch and being chased by the Robin are actually Juvenile Orioles. Feel fortunate to have had the Red Heads nesting in our Tree Belt the last 3 years. Got a video this year of Red Heads feeding 2 young th-cam.com/video/u09XtMSPaoo/w-d-xo.html
You're welcome. Very rare for me to see them come to the Bird Bath also. I think the Red Head was in early stages of molt and really could not pass up the opportunity. Last 2 years we have had a shortage of grasshoppers and the Red heads were taking jelly set out for the Orioles and feeding there young. See Vdieo link at minute 2:40 .th-cam.com/video/qdnNPjXnqyw/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for comment. Normally having camera this close with many birds splashing on a clip of this length, the lens is going to get covered at some point. Just luck that no one drenched it. I usually do try to set it up wind. More typical: th-cam.com/video/ynA3v-0RHTE/w-d-xo.html
You are right! Actually did somewhat of a somersault both times as the brick was maybe angled with too much steepness. I remember watching the robin in it's bullying actions from the kitchen window and almost went outside to yell at it for chasing the poor little oriole chick away so many times.
Lovely video! I wish the robin would come to my bird bath. We don't have that "red head" woodpecker in my area, just the "red bellied" also very beautiful. This one is quite fastidious!
Thank you - If weather is cool or other source to bathe might curtail Robin using a bath. I bet when it warms your Robin will come a'splashin. Robins more than other bird seem to like a bath. Red Heads are near threatened with declining numbers. Had a Red Bellied WP all winter here. Hope it stays around. th-cam.com/video/htyIuGp8hhA/w-d-xo.html
Beautiful video footage, clear as a bell, and great angle! Some feedback on the bird bath: Too deep. Birds are afraid to get stuck in the depth and not be able to fly out. If feet cannot touch the bottom, they have no way of springing out of the water with wet wings. So depth needs to be reduced. If you make a higher spot in the center and leave it deep around that island, it will work as well. Sides are too high. If birds cannot see a cat sneaking up on them, they are eaten! Why not make a shallow pool. Pretend you are the bird user of the pool and design it that way. The pool is beautiful from our point of view but dangerous for birds. Correctly designed as a large shallower pool with great visibility, several birds could use it with no fighting. I did the same for my bird feeder. Installed a large tray feeder I made myself and now several species including squirrels all feed together peacefully.
Thanks for comments. Set this up late spring 2017 when in severe drought here in South Dakota. As an emergency measure thinking birds might need some help, I used a large Rubbermaid garbage can lid inverted and mounted on top of an old aluminum gbge.can that put it about 4 feet off the ground. Our cat died the year before and saw no predators around. No bird fatalities or feather evidence. I think this might have been the least friendly bird setup I used. I changed things around constantly and adjusted when I took videos. Birds were active taking baths all summer and seemed to be more confident if Lawn Ducks were there. This year have been flooded all summer and no where close the activity even though I have kept more conventional setup. From 2017 - th-cam.com/video/9W2Du1xN06g/w-d-xo.html
@@fluffypeanutcat Lawn ducks? How clever! I have to do the same. I had rescued cats for years so could never enjoy the birds. Finally cat free at last! Now I get the birds, squirrels, and even frogs!!
Love this! You have some great birds coming to your yard! I long to see orioles! What kind of area is this? Rural or suburban, farmland or open woodland? What region of the US? What is that tree the orioles seem to love so much? Sorry for so many questions, I just love birding and try to pick up tips whenever I can.
Thanks-Located in Southeastern South Dakota on a farmstead 5 miles east of Ethan just a little south of Highway SD-42. The tree closest behind is an ornamenal crab of some kind. The years it bears a big fruit crop the birds in winter will pick it clean. Trees in bacground are part of an old 2 acre shelterbelt planted in the early 50's. We have had both Baltimore and Orchard Orioles on the place around 5 years now. The male BO's are just spectaclar Orange in Spring and early summer. Parents were taking the young ones to the bath on a day when a grumpy Robin didn't want to share. The grape Jelly has really went over well the last 2 years for the Orioles. th-cam.com/video/qdnNPjXnqyw/w-d-xo.html

Not only was I amazed at the variety of birds in your area, but all their private bird sounds and catching them chatting to themselves, as they enjoy a little spa treatment! It was truly an eye opener! Love to you from the Pacific NW! 👇👏✌🍂🍃🍁🍁
You are most welcome
Haha! That woodpecker takes a bath like he thinks he’s a nervous little Chihuahua . 😂
Red Heads are pretty wary and I think he was a little spooked out in seeing the cam lens.
Karl Krueger Oh! thanks for the info! I didn’t know that about them! it’s good to learn new things 😊👍

watching in slow motion is just so fascinating.
great idea!
Omgosh makes me all happy inside and I was feeling super discouraged today !🙌Great vid😃thanks so so much for posting! more👍🏼more👍🏼😉
There has being research that shows seeing a bird makes people feel better.
That's why I cuddle with my 2 macaws. They are wonderful and incredibly loving! They have huge habitats in my home and are never in cages. I've had both for over 20 years. Loved your video!
I have a Bird Bath look😇
WOW, your birdbath is apparently well known by a great many birds! thumbs up! plus 1~
It was an extremely dry year in 2017. I was suprised to at the variety it drew through the year.
Wow. He really bathed every bit of himself. Nice video capture.
Thank you-Birds get all the credit. Definitely the best capture I've gotten by just leaving the camera and let run.
@@fluffypeanutcat Also, I liked your bath. Structured just right, for birds to gradually inch down to the water. Did you make it yourself? Bird baths are expensive!
That Robin was too funny. Great lens on that camera. Very diverse gang of birds.
Yeah, it was great to see it slip twice and summersault into the water. I was so mad at it for going after the Oriole chicks. Watching all of this from kitchen window and I almost went outside to chase Robin away. Glad I didn't.
I love watching birds have a bath. Flapping their wings and splashing water everywhere like oh yeah!!!!!
I have a Bird Bath look🐥😘
Very cool, love the Red-head!
Thanks for comment. Have to say not the most graceful bird in the world.
I loved this video thanks for sharing it! My small birdbath attracts small birds and I enjoy watching them every day
Thank You. As we had plenty of water this year not as much bird bath action but I had lots of action with Orioles on Jelly feeders. Also late summer had Humming birds migrating though and using my feeders. th-cam.com/video/4ZaruHcT7n8/w-d-xo.html
Great video! Red-Headed Woodpecker is very colorful.
Thank You. This was taken probably near it's molting period in 2017. Feathers even more brilliant earlier. The male and female have identical plumage
th-cam.com/video/Nekt9vXler8/w-d-xo.html
We have two red headed woodpeckers that frequent our feeders almost daily. Up until they showed up I've never seen any in person before. Their heads look like velvet when the sun 🌞 hits them just right.
That is great. The male and female are identical in plumage. I am guessing they are raising young in tree cavity nearby. This time of year though young might be out of nest. I have had a pair around the last 5 years or so. Mine will eat sunflower seeds as well as Jelly put out for the Orioles.th-cam.com/video/qdnNPjXnqyw/w-d-xo.html
@@fluffypeanutcat Wow! It really did enjoy itself some jelly.
{6:41-6:48}Nothing like a pole dance after a good bath! Nice set up btw!
Thank you.
That little robin in the beginning was so funny with the way he was flipping around compared to how the woodpecker started with his face and worked his way down
Robins seem to go all in when they bathe. The Red Headed woodpecker legs designed for climbing trees not standing in Bird Bath so they have to be more caustiou
Love the paint stick perch! Clever Karl!
Thanks-It definitely had a lot of perched bird use.
Watching this video is a good stress relief
Woodis are gorgeous birbs! ♥
Beautiful closeup shots
Someone hates your camera!! Could watch this all day. Thanks!
The Red Head definitely did notice it. I think a flashing recording lite might have spooked a little. There were a couple of times birds landed on the mount the camera was attached to. Thanks !
Thank you! This was a nice treat to watch.
So very welcome.
My cat is watching with great interest! So fun to watch for me too! I have 2 birdbaths that i fill twice a day. It will be 112 on Wednesday! My front garden is shaded so it becomes an airport!
Birds really do appreciate some water relief on a hot day. This was recorded in a drought year.
Karl Krueger We recently stayed in Sedona and its dry up there too. I filled a giant water pan and at sunset a group of 15 Peccaries and 4 piglets came running up and all those snouts slurped up 3 gallons! What a treat.
who needs netflix when you can just put a birdbath and a couple bird feeders in your backyard and watch nature in peace and quiet. very relaxing and entertaining at the same time
It's always my first look in the morining from Kitchen window.
Thanks for the buttery smooth 60fps
You know I had to think about that as usually recorded 30 fps. Soemhow I put file in a mislabed directory. When I found it low and behold it was 60fps. You're Welcome
Just a simple pool of water is a gift from God and so important to these crazy birds. Such a cool catch of life as a bird
This was my first year setting out a bird bath at the farm. At times it was almost like thery were having splash contests
Ah....✨so cute and peaceful✨love it💛thank you🌼
Thanks a bunch!
Thoroughly enjoyed this video!
Very nice, Karl :-)
I have a Bird Bath look🐼😂
I like the way he checked out the pretend bird first... so cute!
Thanks for pointing that out. I could see him twisting his head and looking and always thought it was only the camera. I now see he hopped right over to get a closer look at the yellow painted cement duck. I always forget too, that interestingly the male and female redhead are marked exactly the same.
Seems like the larger birds get the longest time near the water. I love the variety of birds that visit your bird bath.
It was kind of a record drought year and I did not realize the variety that was nearby just looking for a place to refresh themselves.
What a beautiful vantage point!
Never know what a bird(s) going to do. Almost seemed liked they rehearsed and hit their stage marks properly.
So beautiful bath tray
My cat loves watching this! ❤️
So calming, i love it!
Thanks much. When I need to find peace in the day I try to find the time to look at a bird. The Robin in this video was kind of a punk though.
How dislike this scene??? I can't understand. It's wonderful and preasures.Thank you
Thanks - Some people just like to be different
Here is a TH-cam review: th-cam.com/video/CikSF_47Fpw/w-d-xo.html
I used to rely on the motion detection feature but now I just set within focus distance and see what I can capture in an hour. Check Amazon reviews on the different brands that are sold on Amazon. Here is a link to a little more expensive one.

I have a Bird Bath look🐬
😭😭 I love the feathered creatures so much!!! I used to have feeders and a bird bath when I was a child but alas life has caught up to me and I don't have my own space. :-(
Really got involved the last 3 years. Several feeders also. It is so neat to see them around. Live artwork.
Thanks I'm watching from England and don't know these birds, 😊
Thanks for watchin. There was a Male Baltimore Oriole that did fly in to first scare the Cat Bird. It's colors are a little off as late summer and near molt. The little ones that look like the Goldfinch and being chased by the Robin are actually Juvenile Orioles. Feel fortunate to have had the Red Heads nesting in our Tree Belt the last 3 years. Got a video this year of Red Heads feeding 2 young th-cam.com/video/u09XtMSPaoo/w-d-xo.html
Очень интересно наблюдать за птицами)
No one is going to mess with "Woody" ...he's got the biggest pecker. Long and sharp. Seriously.
It does seem other birds notice he(she?) has a formidable weapon.
Yes they will kill other birds that is why none came while he was there.
I have 2 different kinds of Mr Woodpeckers but never seen them drink or bathe.. Thank you!!
Great video. Love the woodpecker
Thank You - Have had a nesting pair around the last 3 years
Peaceful and calming video
I have a Bird Bath look😍🦓
Splish splash I was taken a bath. .round abouta Saturday night. Super cool. Don't know how you keep the lense so dry. Great set up for peeps!
Thank you for this karl! we enjoyed watching this here in Orlando Florida ... so did our cat
You are very welcome! Best regards to you Cat. Hopefully just a watcher and not a catcher!
@@fluffypeanutcat Yes a watcher and a dreamer only. Here he is -> th-cam.com/video/byVqFyb_weQ/w-d-xo.html
I really think that robin fell in twice
You are right! Actually did somewhat of a somersault both times as the brick was maybe angled with too much steepness. I remember watching the robin in it's bullying actions from the kitchen window and almost went outside to yell at it for chasing the poor little oriole chick away so many times.
our woodpecker in the midwest doesn't look like this, didn't get to hear his sound
The Red Headed Woodpecker is becoming scarce in parts of the Midwest
Some feedback on the bird bath:
Too deep.
This is wonderful footage, I love it
Thanks
Wow ! Thank you for this sharing. Lot of competition around the bath :)
Thanks - This was during one of our driest years. Birds of a feather and different feather - not always wanting to share together.
I understand, even if it's not dry or hot outside, birds don't like to share their place in bath lol I see that in my little garden
Nice variety of birds
Thanks
watching that robbin get so into it around 2:25 that he fell over forwards and flopped around a bit gave me a good laugh
That was kind of an irate Robin as it kept chasing the little Oriole chick away. It needed to cool off.

Simply wonderful...
Thnaks! - The birds hit all their marks that day.
Very nice birds.
this is such a therapeutic video
Thanks - Glad you liked
The woodpecker was terrified to get in the water
They're a bit awkward when it comes to ground things. They only know how to climb tree trunks and branches for the most part.
