  • Update! 1/2/21 check the comments for the man himself! I have been wearing these every day and have absolutely NO complaints! I will be sending my second pair back to Franks for a resole. What great customer service.
    I have two pairs of Nicks builder pros boots. I sent my first pair back to nicks for a resole and was told they must be rebuilt after less then two years. I sent my second pair to franks boots to see how they worked. Weird heel placement and no stitching through outsole. Ready to send off my first pair again and going to try JK boots.
    Honestly all the BS people say about how these boots are cheaper in the long run is not true for a guy that actually uses boots daily.
    3/17/2017 i spent $485.98 on my first pair
    5/9/2019 i bought my second pair $550.98
    What are you going to wear while waiting for a resole?
    7/26/2019 first pair rebuild at nicks $360.01
    11/3/2020 second pair resole at franks $174.90

    Franks moves to he heel forward slightly. Helps you natural gate when you walk plus less heel wear

    Hi Ryan, I can't imagine a situation in which we would rebuild a boot without a customer's authorization, unless a customer states, "I purchased resole but do whatever you need to them". I apologize if the necessity for a rebuild was not communicated to you. Rebuilds are required when the insole is dry and cracks or the vamp leather is cracked. As for the rebuild pricing, $30 is for the steel toe adder, $32.99 is in the boot guard material and the labor for carefully painting that on, $7.99 for laces, $13.99 for grease, and $26.04 for shipping. That's $84.97 in adders and accessories. $26.04 to ship. So, your order came in at about $85 more than a standard rebuild due to the adders and accessories. If the boot guard isn't something you need, you can save a bit there. You probably don't need new laces and grease as well with every rebuild--so more savings there. Anyways, I hope that helps.

      Thanks for reaching out! Yeah i was very bummed with the experience. I purchased my first pair of nicks expecting years of service. The original sole was a min vibram as that was what resembled the redwings i had used for years. When it was time to send them back i ordered my second pair with the full logger sole to last longer.
      When i sent in my boots i got a call from someone saying they needed a full rebuild and when i asked why they could not explain as they were only relaying the message from someone els. I did not push the issue as i have no experience to argue and would not want to.
      I will say that i oiled and maintained the boots religiously and did not suspect any damage. It was portrayed that one should expect a couple of resoles before a rebuild. That wasn’t my experience.
      It was never a cost issue as i was fully prepared to spend good money to maintain my new boot choices. Still buy leather laces from you guys.
      I still recommend any of the Big three from Spokane

      @@ryanburbridgeI see. Yes, sometime the boot maker will bring the boot to a customer service rep and tell them, "Can you let this custom know they need a rebuild instead of resole". The CSR may not have known the exact reason, but the reasons for rebuilds are always insole damage or vamp damage. One thing we are careful to do is never guarantee the life of our boots. We guarantee our material and craftsmanship, but we never guarantee that our boots will "do XYZ" and "last ABC". We see people who get 6 years before they need their first resole. We also see people who need rebuilds every season. Body weight, weather, sole, and terrain all play very important factor in now long a boot will last before needing service. Hope this helps.

    3/4 inch sole versus 1 inch sole
    1 inch is too thick to be stitched through.
    You got 1 inch, so stitching isn't possible.
    If you'd bought 3/4" they would have been stitched.

    • @steelonius
      @steelonius 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I got the Highlander's made for me and received them about a week ago. They claim to be a 3/4" sole on the sight at Frank's Boots. They were not stitched through.

    • @jeffmitchell72
      @jeffmitchell72 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@steelonius funny coincidence.....I ordered MTO T2's, which should have been the thinner midsole, and was shocked to receive them not stitched through. When I talked to them they apologized and said they'd redo them which I declined. The explanation given was that they had sent a T1 try-on pair with the thicker midsole because that is what was available, and when they started making my boots someone must have chosen the midsole based on the try-on pair instead of my build sheet.
      So they may have made the exact same mistake on yours.
      The thicker midsole is more expensive so I reasoned I got a free upgrade, but truth be told I do still wish I had the thinner midsole. The thicker one walks fine but I'm not convinced it will ever be as nice for kneeling/squatting on my toes as I often do.
      So I think you are not only not stitched through, but also have the thicker midsole.

    • @steelonius
      @steelonius 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jeffmitchell72 That is funny indeed. I called and ask why it wasn't stitched through. The same thing was said to me on the phone by Frank himself, a free accidental upgrade to a thicker and better sole. In as many words. I am happy with the boots and didn't want to complain but like you I would prefer the thinner sole. I also added a linemen shank which stiffens them, because I do tree work, so I had hoped the thinner sole would mellow that out as I do plenty on the ground too. They still seem like great boots. I am thinking if they break in well and I like them I may invest in a second pair and alternate them day by day. These are my first set though. But I reckon they're pretty sweet.

    I have had custom boots now for almost 4 years. Jk and franks. My jk boots are and always have been amazing. Franks took longer to break in. Almost 2 months but now are probably the only thing I wear daily. I got them because my left and right foot are different. Right arch collapsed. So the uppers always came together and touched no matter what brand I got. Got a pair of jk made to order and completely solved the problem. Then saw franks and I’m not a brand loyalist so I tried them out. Both are worth every penny. I can’t even wear a stock boot now it feels like a loose sloppy tennis shoe lol. I’m sure you know the feeling. Not to mention there’s just something about being in the club that can break in a custom hand made boot. Not many can!!

      @ryanburbridge  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha ha awesome!!! I enjoy laughing at guys that complain about the break in. You don’t break in these boots your break in your feet. I got home from a full day and knew my boots were delivered that day. When i first tried them on i actually thought they were wood clogs lol i had instant regret. Then i got a call to go back to work that evening so i kept them on. I literally could not articulate my ankle to press the throttle or brake when driving lol. Never took them off. I bought the second pair because i have always had one pair for work and one pair for home. After my work boots were dust i would buy a new pair and rotate the home boots to work. These boots and rainbow sandals are the only thing i wear.
      You should post some tin knocking videos. Never heard of that lol about to go down a Tim knocking TH-cam hole lol

    For me if this happened being disabled and I got a huge bill. Theres no way I could pay it.. Honestly this where the PNW boot companies need to invest in a whole internal call center. Where you have people training to be shoemakers, have access to the floor and all their job to do is take customer service calls.. I know these companies run really lean compared to other businesses but this where you have to invest.

    Your comment about the sole stitching, with Nick's the builder pro and Frank's type 2, the soles are thinner, and they are able to stitch them. The Nick's hotshot and Frank's type 1 commander have thicker soles and the machines can't stitch them so they are just glued and screwed. For what it's worth Ive had both, and I like the thicker soles better

    The heel set forward is to eliminate your foot print in the ground. I bet you notice you don’t scuff tour heel as much? It’s a way they set there heels. I have franks and am going with jk next. No and franks are awesome. Nicks in my opinion is more mainstream now and lost some quality.

    According to my own research franks has more experience, a lot of workers from nicks pre ownership change went to franks, and seem to know little things like the offsetting of the heel. TBH when I buy my boots im going to go with them seem more experienced/patient.
    Thanks for this useful review, definitely not a common topic to discuss post purchase costs like resoles/sudden rebuilds. Must keep them in mind and contrary to what everybody says, you were right. You are not saving money with this boots.

    I got a pair of the Type 2 Highlander from Frank's. Brand new as of a week ago. The soles on them are not stitched through. I thought that was interesting to note. Also for what it's worth...unless you need the fire resistant sole for the type of work you do it's not much of an advantage, they are not more durable. In fact they may have a slightly shorter lifespan than the normal vibram.
