I would definitely back this choice! I was a pizza delivery driver part time after my factory/warehouse job, and boots are the way to go. Especially during the winter boots are pretty much a necessity. A lot of peoples houses are hard to get to especially when rain, snow, mud, gravel etc is in the way add to that carrying oblong shaped boxes and sodas. Boots saved me as a delivery boy.

So true, I'm used to boots lasting at least a year (more if their military issue, though the ones in made for GIs from the Korean War to the Gulf War are seemingly designed to be as uncomfortable as possible), anyhow, I really needed a new pair, so I bought some from Big5. They were super comfortable and in a few months they have holes in on the sides of the toe box (So much for waterproof!) and the outside of the heels wore done pretty quickly.

saving money *for* a purchase is more satisfying to me tbh. Maybe it's just being poor(ish), but it really feels like an accomplishment finding something good quality, setting a budget goal for it, saving up for it, and finally buying it, caring for the item, and having it for a long time feels satisfying and continues to feel satisfying.

Your rant against gatekeeping really tickled me. I never experienced that nonsense until I got into the higher tier work boots. I find it very strange and counter productive for people new to higher end work boots. As a matter of fact I often wore my boots working as a barista and a DM for Starbucks. They’re comfortable and I wanted to wear them! They’ve been a perfect companion in the forest, in the snow, through creeks, and indeed behind a counter. No matter what job I’m doing

    • @jed-henrywitkowski6470

I'm a landscaper currently. Tough guy kind of job, rough on footwear. But I've been a barista. And a chef. And I've done IT. I've needed high quality, supportive boots all along. I wear boots with a tailored suit. All because I have bad knees, so I need the ankle support, so if my knee fails, I don't twist or roll my ankle during the correction.
I watch these videos on TV, so I guess I don't see the comments often enough to have experienced the gatekeeping you referenced in the vid, but wow, if that happens, it's so petty.
Also, for me, the extra time the 10 inch boots take to lace is worth it to me, because, have I mentioned the bad knees? Oh, and I'm 6'2", with those bad knees..

Sir, this video is amazing! I recently was promoted from delivery driver to counterman at my auto parts store, and my $50 work shoes were NOT ready for the 8 hours of standing behind a counter.
I’m on my second pair in two years and they’ve left me wanting. I started a search for the best work boots and slowly discovered the pricier and pricier brands until I landed on Nicks, Whites, and Wesco. After a bit of further digging, I’ve decided on a moderate arch pair of Builder Pros. I think I’m ready to spend the money, and seeing some posts and anecdotes about them, I trust they’ll be worth it. Your video has been helpful in making this decision.
I think I’m gonna go with rough black lower(because our uniform requires black shoes) and a smooth reddish brown upper. And I’ll take your advice and aim more for an 8 inch shaft instead of the long 10 inch one.
Anyway, I know I’m commenting on a year old video, but I loved seeing how they’ve held up for you for two years in a more physical environment than mine is! Are they still going strong?

As a guy who’s career went from agriculture and construction to being a Starbucks store manager, I’ve often felt I wasn’t “manly” enough anymore because of my job, a job I’m doing to provide for my family just the same as everyone else. Your words are a great reminder to not let the job or work determine the man, but instead let the amount of work ethic, intentions, and character that go into the work be the defining factors. You’ve inspired this carhartt wearing barista to get the Nicks I’ve been wanting so I can finally stop replacing my Wolverines,Redwings, and Danners (that have been worn down from 8-10 hours of barista work a day and an outdoorsman’s live in the PNW) without caring about being put into the “tough” or “soft” crowd. Excellent review. ibew elec. building out data centers, switchgear, and electrical rooms myself. Watch your channel religiously and when the Danners failed, I finally decided to get whites. drove back out from seattle to spokane to pick them up and stopped at nick's after watching your original video. Got a pair of builder pros in chestnut/honey. Excellent build quality and you're not lying about the break in. Broke a tooth first thing in the morning (excruciating) and didn't even remember because my feet were hurting so bad by chow. Keep up the quality content!

Although I'm not surprised it makes me happy to see this positive review. I'm one of the lucky ones who started wearing Nick's early and haven't worn much else for comparison. (The Carolina type boot that maybe lasted me a year was about it) Definitely agree with the gateway drug thought, so many boots that I want......different leathers, different styles, even the shoe style they carry.....sigh... ;-D

I’ve had my Nick’s Hot Shots for almost four years now. I originally wanted a pair of White’s as I got a pair of Bounty Hunters back in 2012 or 2013.
I have an office job, but just wore my Nick’s today on a hike up a muddy mountain and they are aging great. But the Nick’s were BY FAR the hardest boot I’ve ever broken in. But now they are AMAZING.

@Clay Pylant not yet but planning on it, the problem me and boss run too is we are worried we kill these boots fast, we wear redwings and I barely get 4 to 5 months out of them, I’m planning on getting a pair before fall and switch back and forth, then after winter get another pair, because that way you can send a pair out for resole or repairs

Just got my builder pros in the mail and I started to lace the right boot. The brand new leather lace broke! I’d love to see a video on boot laces. Ways to lace, aftermarket boot laces and your take on those brands. Absolutely impressed with the Nicks build quality and I can’t wait to break them in. For the record I called nicks and they sent me out a new set of laces at no charge. Can’t wait to get them in so I can get to breaking them in.

From my 6 years of experience DO NOT buy Wescos. My Job Master failed within the first 2 weeks and Wesco refused to honor their “warranty”. Unfortunate because they are about and hour from where I live so I went into the shop went through the whole process, employees I worked with were great but when I stopped back in when failed boots they wanted nothing to do with it. Then I had the pleasure of the excuse train from the owner himself. Would have been easier to just warranty the boots and fix them. I wasn’t made, a little annoyed, but I understand things happen when they are made by hand. The refusal to honor the warranty and all the excuses made me write them off forever

    Mr. Murowski;
I gotta thank you. I've been in manufacturing for a decade and have always ended up chewing through 2 - 3 pairs of work boots every year. (I got wide feet. 10.5 FFF) I saw this video a year ago and finally decided to go for almost these exact boots. It's a whole new world. Mine fit perfectly outa the box, but felt like sitting my feet in boxes of nails. After 2 weeks, though? More comfortable than my $300 Red Wings Moc Toe boots. Now? More comfortable than my fabric top tennis shoes.
Cannot overstate how much better these boots are than anything I've ever experienced and I have you to thank for it.

I’ve been a Nicks fan for years and I don’t bother telling people anymore because no one listens to me. Like you said you have to experience it for yourself, and all people see and all people wanna hear is how expensive they are. It’s either pay me now or pay me later... and if I want something to last I’ll spend the extra money for the quality.
Awesome review glad to see that you’re a Nicks fan too.

A year ago I was looking for a new boot and saw your review. I bought a pair based on your recommendation. I have the same boot with the exception that I have smooth leather on the upper and I bought a 2" shorter boot. OMG, these are my favorite boots. I have a small hobby farm that I work on on the weekends. These boots will last me the rest of my life. If you're thinking about getting a pair from Nick's, spend the extra for the fitting. It's so worth it. Since then I've bought a more dress like boot using the same fitting. I'm sold.

Love your videos and just wanted to say since you are having worries about the laces on your boots I think you should totally check out Pisgah Range LTD. They make American handmade tough-as-nails laces in all kinds of colors and patterns for a reasonable price. I think you can agree as someone who really puts in the work the laces are often overlooked but critical and usually the first thing to fail. So I think not just yourself but a lot of people would appreciate or even be enlightened by a review of them or any heavy-duty laces brands or such. Just my two cents of course but thought I might as well throw out the idea. Thanks again for the videos and love the setup! Very Late Show vibes.

I had a pair of Nicks that were in my truck. Then the truck caught on fire. I was more upset about the boots being burned up to be honest. The hooks are designed for speed lacing. Use a side to side motion and hook two at a time. Once you get the motion down, takes a couple of seconds for each boot. Then the 10 inches doesn't matter as much. th-cam.com/video/zAhz6oNBZvk/w-d-xo.html

Update. I have now had my Nicks for 6 months. Fully broke in. I wear them for everything. The smooth upper fits nicely under pants legs and the Vibram sole has little wear. I would have went with an 8 inch vs 10 but apart from that I would change nothing.

Nicks charge more because of the brand, reputation, and people are willing to pay that cost. I personally prefer the Whites or Drews Boots. Drews boots are easily 100 dollars cheaper, and they are awesome. That being said, Nicks are still really good boots, but I'd go with Wesco, Whites, or Drews for the cheaper price.

I have other pairs now, but both my oldest pairs are still good-they could use tongue replacements, but have been resoled a time or two each. They've got some more life in 'em. Because I wear them so much it took about three years to break in my newest pair, but they're nearly fully broken-in now. I'm a surveyor and woodsman.

I bought my 10" Builder Pro's late last year. I work in IT so I don't wear them for work, but I wanted something that would support my very high arches while I work in my shop (woodworking and blacksmithing) in the evenings and weekends. I also do tree removal volunteer work after hurricanes/tornadoes in the Southeast and I got tired of dealing with cheap (or expensive) Chinese boots.
The custom fit is absolutely the way to go. I had a couple of small issues with the boots they sent for fitting and when, at long last, I got my boots, those issues had been taken care of.
The break-in was not that bad and it wasn't long before these became the most comfortable footwear I've ever owned.
They are indeed a gateway drug. I now have a pair of Roberts and if I ever do wear either one out, I will be buying more.

Use the speed laces right and your boot lacing will go much faster... lace one all the way up and then lace the other
