6:48 Love the video dude, but Meena is the fortune teller and Maya is the dancer. I'm a huge Dragon Quest fan, I was introduced through the game Dragon Warrior Monsters.
Hey buddy. This video gave me a wicked nostalgic trip. I grew up in Vancouver, BC during my early years and remember getting my family to drive me down to Bellis Fair to check out Famcom Games. Wow. What a rush it was to see the games for display. I remember being completely torn between choosing either Kid Icarus or Metroid for the NES. Thanks for the wicked nostalgia rush!
You are one of my favorite Gaming-related TH-cam by far. You want to know why? Because you show passion. Passion for what you do, what you've played and it takes one self right back to his own childhood by just watching you. I think I have a similar approach to my video-content. I just wanted to tell you, that you are a biiiig inspiration for myself. I even created a show similar to your style of reliving gaming-memories, called "Herzteile" (Heart Pieces). Sorry for my English. I am German.
Awesome videos, man! I like that you talk about the history with some back story to tha game as well as having shots of the gameplay. Keep up the good work...
Long time subscriber here(we've even talked in pm). I must say this is some of your best work and you should be proud. It has a mixture of your personality, creativity, and is informative. Great start to what should be an excellent series of reviews.
Great memories of seeing the original at the local rental shop. I never owned it....and bowed out for the rest of the series until 8.....but I still realize just how special this series is....great video sir....Robman, and yourself have to be the kings of childhood memories! Keep up the great work!
Your are among the TH-camrs I value watching most. Every time you release a video a smile surfaces on my face because I know its one filled with a rare passion for games that few others have. A fire I've yet to see in anyone else. This passion reminds me of a time when things were simpler. I hope you continue making videos, because you're a sunshine that shines though the gloomy clouds of many of your viewers.
That was fantastic! Can't wait to see the rest. Dragon Quest is my favorite RPG series of all time, they're just timeless classics in my opinion. Going to the DQ 25th anniversary art expo, seeing all those original sketches and music sheets, playing the mystery game that was given to all the guests, truly a highlight of my time in Japan.
Started playing these not long ago and definitely one of my favourite series. Even tough I never played it feels so nostalgic. Those games are awesome. Thanks for the reviews!
Excellent overview! I completed Dragon Warrior 1 as a kid using the Nintendo Power guide. I felt like I'd never worked so hard in my life! Looking forward to learning more about the series.
Dragon Warrior was a important game with me and my friends back in 1989. On the last day of summer 1989, my friends and I had an all-day bender playing Dragon Warrior. My 7th grade year started the next day.
I love how the localization of Dragon Quest games is handled in Spain, in that versions each city from a game tend to have a particular dialect, in some cities they speak like in Agentina in others like in Mexico or Spain and so on. In some cities they even speak spanish with a bit of portuguese or italian. I want to know if in USA it is handled similar or the same way.
The first Dragon Warrior was my favorite game as a kid. It was my introduction to RPG's. I still love it till this day. I beat it again recently on an emulator on my phone. Something I could never do as a child.
I def remember Famicom games. My uncle was big on importing, and so I had a whole slew of Famicom games to borrow to play on my NES. I even had Super Mario Bros. 2... which I thought originally was a hack because of the SMB2 we got here in North America - that and it didn't look much different from the first one. I also had tons of multi-carts that were Famicom carts... I still have the few that I bought from my uncle, so it's neat to look back on them. Great vid btw! Love Dragon Quest!
Much respect to Dragon Quest. Videos like this have demonstrated to me that this series established many of the facets of gaming that I loved in Phantasy Star, Shining Force and Lunar.
loved the dragon warrior games growing up. IV was def my favorite growing up. felt lots of nostalgia with this vid. the remakes seem cool. looks like i gotta invest in a ds now. cant wait for part 2!
Wow thanks for this video, Really I can't thank you enough for making this. When it ended I wanted more and glad you doing a part two soon. I was always interested in this game series but I never played any of them growing up from NES to SNES and so on. Your video is helping me realize I missed on such a great series.
I just adored Dragonwarrior, and still have my copy from the 80's in mint shape. After dragonwarrior was released in the US. i moved overseas and was not aware they had released 2,3 and 4 for the NES till just now. Thank you Johnny. Your awesome for still luvin gaming . All my BF wants to do is work on his freakin Harley

Really awesome videos :) The best ones are when you talk about series like this! Though I started playing DQ with DQ8 it blew me away as I played it. I gotta find time to play the older ones on the DS though, DQ5 looks amazing.
I remember my dad getting me a copy of Dragon Warrior via the Nintendo Power subscription. Still have the map, manual, guide and flash card. I made sure to grab DQ 4-6 on DS when they were released and I'm hoping that the DQ 1-3 get rereleased on DS as well someday.
I remember my grandparents bringing me to Toys R Us to pick out a game for my birthday, I picked Dragon Warrior because of the box-art. Here I am over 20 years later still playing Dragon Quest games, good choice little Nico, good choice.
Great stuff Johnny! Sucks to wait for the next part, but HappyConsoleGamer videos is one of the weeks highlights. Wouldn't mind longer videos so no need to hurry :D
New subscriber here. Just wanted to tell you that I love your channel. Everyone now a-days has a gimmick. They're angry, they're yelling, they're trying to be funny, etc etc. Everyone is trying to be something, and it all seems so plastic. What I love about your channel is that you're just an honest dude reliving his gaming memories online. It's a welcome change from all the garbage out there. Keep up the good shit, bro.
1:30 It got so bad after a while, I eventually just muted the sound and put on Blind Guardian instead. The NES sound is just so tinny, it just doesn't do the music's intention justice.
Nice review, thanks HCG! This came at a perfect time. A friend and I were just talking about the Dragon Quest series, and it's influence on early Final Fantasy titles. I believe it was a review by Roo from Clan of the Grey Wolf, where it was pointed out to me just how strong the Dragon Quest franchise is in Japan. As the FFXIV re-release looms, I can't help but reflect on the Final Fantasy series, and it's spiritual older sibling, Dragon Quest.
I had never herd of this series until i found your channel but you always make it sound really interesting so i hope to play it at one point or another. :)
Dragon Warrior on the NES was the first RPG I ever played back in 1990, and I loved it. I followed it with DWII and then later DWIII. Fantastic games; never went past the third one.
Another great video! Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest I was the first RPG that I really got into, and beat. We bought that game, along with Final Fantasy and Metroid, via the "Valley Trader"... Sadly, it's the only game in the series that I've beaten.
Proud to say Dragon Warrior was my first RPG, i was too young to get very far into it, but i played it a lot, and the music really stuck in my head lol. For years i didn't know Dragon Quest was Dragon Warrior... i never got into them when i got older, i was into Final Fantasy and Phantasy Star, ignoring DQ entirely if you can believe it, so here i am, catching up on 30+ years of titles i missed.
Shout outs to my grandpa who stood in line to get Dragon Quest VI for me even though I couldn't even read Japanese at the time. It was awesome to get that, Donkey Kong Country 2 and Mega Man X3 that Christmas.
Dragon Warrior 1, 2 NES. Had over 40 or more games for NES and these were part of it. My NES sold when it was 28 and still worked with it's orginal box set. Miss it now.
Excellent timing! Was just getting back into DQ, 11 hours into IV on DS. First game we saw in EU was Dragon Warrior Monsters which I enjoyed alot, we never saw another game till Dragon Quest VIII (with the number removed, though numbering IX and VI later with the rest unnumbered is weird!) from Level 5.
Dragon Quest 1 combat reminds me of one thing, level grinding. I'm glad I took a break of RPGs to get away from that. I can see the influece of Ultima. Thanks for the great video Johnny.
As nostagic as music from retro rpg gaming is, and it brings back countless wonderful gaming memories ftom the 80 's. It has also broken me do the repetiveness of it, that I must turn off all gaming music or down to a whisper
Nice! Brings back memories. I remember getting my copy of Dragon Warrior in the mail with my Nintendo Power subscription. I loved the game. Despite the music. Lol
Awesome collection...my first dragon warrior game on the NES was life changing, I missed DW 2-3 in my youth but I played a lot of DQ games as they got re-released on DS an 3DS...anyone who loves turn based jrpg's needs to play DQ 11 they stayed true to the combat an that's what I like.
If you want to start into the series, go with 8. From there, branch outward to perhaps 5, then 6. That's not the order I found them in, and not my preference by any means, but it helps to get you into the series.
I'm a recent subscriber but long time retro gamer. I love your reviews and the coverage you give Dragon Quest. I was wondering if you'd played the DQM: Joker games on DS and what you thought? Please can you do more Sega Master System/Mega Drive videos in the future?
I remember Famcom (Famicom?) Games in Bellis Fair too. Got an NES game from them once, and recall watching some guys playing one of the rock & pocky games at the counter. I thought they also had another booth in Pacific Centre in Vancouver, or somewhere in Seattle. So long ago now.
Dragon Warrior/Quest is my FAVORITE RPG franchise and IMO VERY Underrated. I Got hooked on it ever since the first Dragon Warrior back on the ORIGINAL NES
I remember DQ8 when it came out here in North America. There were cool commercials for it on t.v, and I think it was the only DQ that actually sold well in the north.
I played dragon warrior 3 in gameboy color, my dad kinda randomly picked the latest game that came out in store to give to me for my bday. I was hooked, and after that I bought dragon warrior 1-2 for the gameboy color as well. Loved the series and I even have dragon monsters 1-2.
A review on your video's. HappyConsoleGamer enthusiasm, education, and enjoyment over the game series is very entertaining. I also enjoy the face you are not trying to be like a ESPN sponsor or want to be G4 rep. As for Sound and video presentation your hitting all points grats you got a new SUB. 5/5 Stars!
Seriously did not realise these came out of the MSX as well, now I am going to have to track these down :) Y's collection is coming along nicely, but this will make it even more fun. Great video, just love your passion for these type of games.
dragon warrior monsters introduced me to the entire series. I played dragon warrior I & II on gbc then dragon warrior 3 and dwm2 and dq 5&6 roms etc the rest is history!
My dad got me a Nintendo in the late 80's and Dragon Quest was one of the first games he got me. We played and beat it together. I got rid of mine years ago but I wish I would have kept it.
Hey i live in Denmark and i can see we missed out on the dragon quest series here until really late in the series correct me if im wrong? :) i love rpg's and it's kinda sad we never got it here, i know you can emulate the games, but im the kinda guy that wants to play the real thing hehe. what systems do i need to play the earlier games, i know i need some US consoles but wich ones? sorry for the noob questions xD i guees i need the US Nes and Snes is there any other? :)
Benjamin Klodskov Christensen late reply here but it depends if you want to play the original versions then NES for 1-4, Super Famicom for V and VI, PS for DQ VII, PS2 for VIII and DS for IX and either a PS4, 3DS or Switch for XI alternatively especially if you can't read Japanese which if you want to play the original versions of V and VI then NES for 1-4 or GBC for 1-3, DS for IV-VI as those got a ds remakes and IX and either a PS4, PS 1, PS2 or 3DS for 7-8 and a PS4,3DS or Switch for XI when that is released. I didn't include X as that was a MMO.
Dragon Quest got me into gaming when I was 7. I love the series so much. I love ot so much I named my cats Roto and Lady Lora. I love it so much that if they announced a Dragon Quest game on XBox 1 I would buy the console.
I grew up with Dragon Warrior Monsters, I'm very glad I had such a good introduction to gaming. I've always wanted to get into the rest of the series, do you have any recommendations? I have and have played Devil on Homeboy color
I'm interested in starting the series. I've been a big jrpg fan for a while but for whatever reason haven't given Dragon Quest a try. I notice most of the games are available for Android so I will probably be playing on that but I also have the option to play ps1 /ps2... Recommendations where to start?
the NES version is rare and expensive, however you can find it on a DS cart that you can play on the 3DS. you will not find a super Nintendo version as enix skipped north America during this time, however you can play the forementioned DS cart or download one on your android/iPhone.
I know I'm late to the party. May not even get a response. I just wanted to Thank u bud for introducing me to this series I should have loved from the beginning. I've bought all the games, just need 7 and 9. But again! Thank u so much for ur vids!!
Lots and lots to cover there Johnny:D It always disappointed me that DQ V initially did not make it to NA. Man, what an amazing story. Keep up the great work!
Fun Fact, Yuji Horii stated that Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, is his favorite game in the franchise.
It is a perfect game, it definitely has the best plot
not true. that merit belongs to IV
Andy Abell Nope it's been stated in multiple interviews by Horii that 5 is his favorite.
i have a final exam tomorow and im still watching your series.
Guala Nejo so how was your result
the patriot 2 A 2 B 1 fail
Guala Nejo oh 😟
You are the man... I got DQ9 on my new 3DS and I love it IT! My top five TH-camr you are.
Sorry it took me 3 years to find this. I didn't even have Internet back then. Great video that's like a time warp. Love it
Awesome review ! Love going back and watching how far this series and channel have come.

This is why I love classic JRPGs. They take a lot of inspiration from Western RPGs and tabletop RPGs and put their own twist on it
Awesome videos, man! I like that you talk about the history with some back story to tha game as well as having shots of the gameplay. Keep up the good work...
Dragon Warrior was my first RPG I have ever played. I fell in love with RPGs from that point on. Man that was such a long time lol. Great video!
Seeing these older games especially Dragon Warrior brought me down memory lane. Always loved it.
Long time subscriber here(we've even talked in pm). I must say this is some of your best work and you should be proud. It has a mixture of your personality, creativity, and is informative. Great start to what should be an excellent series of reviews.

The reason for all the pain of being a Hiatus X Hiatus fan.... We finally meet.
Stay strong brother, stay strong for all of us...

"Yes there is a 'Stairs' button"

I like smashing barrels and pots, looking for gold and items.
I got a shoe.
Just bought me Dragon Quest VII :D

Magic!! Congrats and enjoy :)
Congrats!!!!! I just beat DQ 7 today!!!!! Jesus Christ that’s a long game... played it off and on over the years...
One of the first videos I've seen. Come back regularly.
Excellent overview! I completed Dragon Warrior 1 as a kid using the Nintendo Power guide. I felt like I'd never worked so hard in my life! Looking forward to learning more about the series.

Got Dragon Warrior in '89. Was such an incredible game. Got me hooked on RPGs for life. When I got it, it was included with the NES.
The first Dragon Warrior was my favorite game as a kid. It was my introduction to RPG's. I still love it till this day. I beat it again recently on an emulator on my phone. Something I could never do as a child.
I have only played Dragon Quest X on DS, but I ended up beating it cause it was awesome
Ummmm I know this is 7 years late but dq10 isn't on the ds. It's an mmo on the Wii and pc only in japan
@@Xaverrrrr He probably meant IX, but forgot the "I" lol.
wtf x ds port??
@@ahmir5798 No. It's only on the Wii in Japan.

Johnny, will you ever do a Metal Gear series review?
I remember my grandparents bringing me to Toys R Us to pick out a game for my birthday, I picked Dragon Warrior because of the box-art. Here I am over 20 years later still playing Dragon Quest games, good choice little Nico, good choice.

crossing the border and going to Bellis Fair... are you from the Vancouver area by any chance?

I love how comprehensive your videos are! Excellent work. I didn't even know Dragon Warrior were Dragon Quest; it all makes sense now :P
8:05 that's literally Android 18 and Bulma in the corner!
I remember playing Dragonwarrior in high school. I also played it on an emulator nearly twenty years later when I was working on my PhD.
i used to love bellis fair! i used to cross the border with my family pretty often and i'd always go to tilt to play the X-Men arcade game!
I've been playing Rocket Slime 3, Theatrhythm Dragon Quest, and Dragon Quest Builders, very awesome games.
I love this look back at the Dragon Quest franchise.
Another great video! Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest I was the first RPG that I really got into, and beat. We bought that game, along with Final Fantasy and Metroid, via the "Valley Trader"... Sadly, it's the only game in the series that I've beaten.

I remember Famicom games at the Western Fair flea market here in London. The stand was called "KD Electronics" and sold mostly counterfeit games. :-/
Oh, great video. I was hoping to find any media with the full series review of Dragon Quest. And, voila, I found your video.
Just watched the video now, pretty good, about to watch the second part. I'm a huge DQ fan too, waiting for DQ Treasures now 😄
Dragon Quest 1 combat reminds me of one thing, level grinding. I'm glad I took a break of RPGs to get away from that. I can see the influece of Ultima.
Thanks for the great video Johnny.

Great video, just love your passion for these type of games.
Missed your always fantastic series feature episodes, so this is a rare treat. Cheers Johnny!
OMG can someone please tell me the name of the background music in this video? Been wanting to know for months....
Were you a fan of the Dragon Warrior Cartoon Series? It only had one Season here in the U.S.
Oh Dragon Quest V! Perfect is an understatement :3
dragon warrior monsters introduced me to the entire series.

Great review, one of your best, Johnny's voice is a bit different now though, feels like he's talking on a games show.
As always Johnny, amazing job telling the tale and your production quality is some of the better of the YT gaming community.
I hope dragon quest comes to Xbox one. In the meantime, I’ll just get one for the 3DS
I'm not able to find a US copy of Dragon Quest IV or Dragon Warrior IV. Is this just rare or was it only released in Japan and Europe?
the NES version is rare and expensive, however you can find it on a DS cart that you can play on the 3DS. you will not find a super Nintendo version as enix skipped north America during this time, however you can play the forementioned DS cart or download one on your android/iPhone.
great review man! I can tell you put a lot of effort into this!
I've watched my brother play the 1rst NES version for hours. Now I am playing Skyrim, Dragons are awesome! Thanks for uploading this.
Very insightful telling of a legendary RPG, HCG! Admittedly I've never played DQ, but seeing this totally changed my perspective on the franchise!
I know I'm late to the party. May not even get a response. I just wanted to Thank u bud for introducing me to this series I should have loved from the beginning. I've bought all the games, just need 7 and 9. But again! Thank u so much for ur vids!!
Making my way through them now! Just finishing up 4 now. Play them all, I highly recommend it.
Lots and lots to cover there Johnny:D It always disappointed me that DQ V initially did not make it to NA. Man, what an amazing story. Keep up the great work!
