      Yeah, we would. We're very annoyed at how close Australia and Canada are to China and Cambodia and Laos are just suburbs of China in comparison. That said, I admit that they see China as a sometimes protector against a sometimes-aggressive Vietnam.

    In an after thought, it’s not surprising for many people to think that this Bilahari guy is some well paid U.S. agent in an anti China crusade or acting on behalf of U.S. interests in the ASEAN region by suggesting for more U.S. influence & involvement with these ASEAN countries over that of China which is establishing more economic & cooperative relationships with ASEAN members , in direct contrast to the U.S. position which link its relations with military alliances , aiming mainly at one nation , China.! Many of the ASEAN countries , with exception of the PH, have realized that the U.S. relations are rather counterproductive to their national interests & had indirectly , refrained from any military involvement with the U.S. in its drive to contain China , by using ASEAN as the cannon fodders, should regional conflicts escalate with U.S. design. As the Indonesian Pres. Prabowo once reiterated on his U.S. policy that the “ U.S. enemies are theirs alone , Not ours “! I believe that the Malaysian PM , Anwar did take a similar position on his U.S. policy. These ASEAN leaders have taken their pragmatic approach on their country’s relations with China which have become more productive on national & regional terms than with the U.S. policy of war & destruction as evidenced in its American exceptionalism.! Surely, SG won’t want to be on the outside looking in , among the ASEAN group.!

No one in Singapore is openly asking this question, but it is on the mind of a lot of people, so I thought George Yeo and Kishore might as well give their views. On the subject matter of deaths figures ....It is always good to appreciate some background History of the PRChina after its founding on Oct 1, 1949,
      Shortly, after the founding of PRChina, on Oct 1, 1949, Chairman Mao Zedong embarked on various CCP Policies to reshape the Mainland of China :- 1) Mao’s Land Reform Movement (1949-1953). Continuous bloody episodes repeatedly seizing lands, of Chinese people and destruction of wealth and assets by the CCP Regime, millions of people were affected, and many lost their lives due to political persecution, executions, and other forms of violence associated with the movement. Estimated death tolls several hundreds of thousands to several millions .. difficult to ascertain as many official records were destroyed subsequently.
      (2). Mao’s commitments of some 3 millions PLA Troops deployed into the Korean War (1950-1953) to fight alongside North Korean Troops against the South Korean Forces and the United Nations Forces led by the U.S. Army. It had been estimated the dead tolls of PLA Troops during the 3-years of the Korean War from some 150,000 to over 400,000. Mao’s eldest son, Mao Anying was also killed during the Korean War on Nov. 25, 1950.
      (3). The GREAT LEAP FORWARD (1958 to 1962) estimated some 15,000,000 to as high as 45,000,000 Chinese Citizens perished through diseases, deprivations and starvations. The details extremely gruesome and thus very difficult for me to elaborate further or write more. Please do your own reading/research.
      (4). The Cultural Revolution (1966 to 1976) After the massive failures of the Great Leap Forward, Chairman Mao’s launched his Cultural Revolution to purge his opponents / dissenters on the excuses to pursue socio-political movement aimed at purification and removal of remnants of capitalist and traditional elements from Chinese society while promoting Maoist ideology and revolutionary fervor. It sought to revitalize the revolutionary spirit and enforce ideological purity within the Communist Party and across all society of PRChina, from small villages to major cities. Traditional Chinese Cultural artefacts/relics were destroyed, burnt, defaced and broken, temples were sacked, libraries and old historical books burnt and Chinese Intellectuals, incl, those can speak foreign languages were persecuted .. and purged (imprisoned or executed).
      Traditional Chinese Cultural practices & Teachings of past Chinese Scholars, Confucius etc. were banned and forbidden as antithetical to the revolutionary ideals of Maoism. Tens of Millions Chinese Citizens lives were uprooted and millions perished during the 10-years of purging throughout from 1966 to 1976 … only ended when Chairman Mao died / passed away on Sept. 9, 1976.
      It has had been estimated that during WWII, total deaths among military personnel, civilians, during direct conflicts, injuries, deprivation. famine, diseases. about 70 million to 85 millions (all countries of the World).)
      You will also be interested total range of CHINESE PEOPLE deaths during Mao's policies implemented (1949-1976) due to starvation/famine, political persecution, execution, deprivations, diseases, through the Land Reform Movement (1949-1953), Korean War (1950-1953), Great Leap Forward (1958-1962), Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), the estimated Chinese People deaths between 30 million to 70 million (only Chinese People).

    Imagine a mafia-like team, sitting somewhere now and enjoying themselves, routinely planning their next move.
    They examine every situation, their interests are spread in every nook and corner of the world, expediently stirring turmoil to create a state of disorder anywhere as suits them, planning the removal of those leaders that are obstacles to their plans, never losing sight of any situation as all must be in tune with their projection to dominate and control the world, to be completely in control of all aspects of businesses from a pin to a bomb, and woe betides those who dare cross their path.
    They use all the tools of the media to confuse and convince, they keep their puppets happy and that is easy for them, and these puppets will do their bidding with just one phone call, they make a mockery of morality and integrity, they set the standards for you to follow, it’s one big game and everyone else doesn’t count, the rest fight and die and they shall wine and dine and get their women.
    It’s a satanic world we are living in, they are enjoying their stimulating games.
    Meantime thousands of conferences, meetings, articles, books, commentaries, forums, demonstrations, interviews, and they wine and dine in the poshest places. Behind the scenes the final decisions were made. To do this and that, drag this fella down, get rid of this fella, and they sit somewhere and enjoy the show.
    And inconsequential speakers or do-gooders aplenty bursting their lungs, yelling or squeaking away here and there, addressing small or big groups, expressing their views on issues, just hot air as that doesn’t count to the mafia as their minds are already set.
    They don’t care how many will suffer and die. Their satanic minds are ceaselessly planning to ensure their control and domination over anything and everything. Their interests come first. The small guys merely suck in and prostitute themselves to these characters.
    That’s the situation and position and reality to accept.

    Xi is an excellent leader contrary to the speaker's assertion, guiding China's economic and technological growth amid great pressure from the west including Singapore. Example of great policy work: (1) long-term investment is supply chain via the belt and road allowing Chinese companies to achieve cost advantage and (2) allowing real estate industry to undergo massive correction to solve housing problem affordability / thus maybe solving declining birth rate. So Xi is an excellent leader taking decisive decision and implementing concrete action.

    He's actually way too entertaining, strolling way too much left and right, sprinkles in way too many aphorisms to be a serious foreign policy thinker. Still I don't catch him heavily blundering, on the contrary there are a lot of new perspectives and conclusions that are strikingly well argued.
    This ever so more as his perspective is decidedly a foreign policy one, that means he cares about the people he sits on the table with without a lot of second guessing on their legitimacy representing the populations they rule over. As a European I do reject this view, but it nevertheless gives refreshing insides to see things from another perspective. Still his approach does not come without its own inconsistencies. "It's not my problem" does not mean it is considered a domestic problem and if extended it might easily mean "I don't care at all if it is a domestic problem, what I care about, is if it's my problem."

    On "unqualified success", I am old enough to know that in government, getting 50% is a huge success. But under Xi, we have seen a successful crackdown on corruption, a crackdown on prostitution, BRI that the west wants to copy, Made in China 2025, environment and air quality, EVs, batteries, solar, wind. Very long list of good policies that led to good outcomes.

    The hard reality is Taiwan would either engage in a Peaceful reunifcation with China, mostly on Taiwan's terms, or China invokes a "liberation" of Taiwan with motherland, given China "position of strength" in due course. However, China will have to wait for the "easterly wind", which could happen based on one or more of these scenarios:
    a) Taiwan declared its independence from China, with the tacit support of the USA;
    b) A drastic change in the political leadership in China where Unification with Taiwan at all costs in order to enhance the new leaderships in China;
    c) The USA itself is in complete internal anarchy / chaos, verging on edge of a 2nd civil war scenario;
    d) The advent of WW3, with China taking on the side of the US's main enemy, possibly Russia;
    e) China has technically reach the status of a bona fide global super-power status, with at least 6 CVNs battle-carrier fleets, 3000 nuclear warheads, an economy that is almost twice that of the USA in PPP terms, and a nuetralized and weakened US allies in Asia (Japan, Australia, India and South Korea).

    Interesting how many of the comments are equally vitriolic and using almost the same tone, same language, almost the same words. One might say that’s because that’s because the views are correct but it’s far too much of a coincidence.
    The question so many commenters raise “How can Singapore put such a person to high office?” or “How can can such a person rise to important office in Singapore?” is a valid one. Singapore doesn’t make too many mistakes of such magnitude or if it does, it doesn’t go unrectified for this long. Neither does the government let such “clowns” or “buffoons” (as the posts term Bilahari) go off to represent them, retired or not.
    Also, Bilahari is well-respected in Singapore so the “Singaporeans” in the comments section seem to be disproportionate in their disparaging of the man.
    I’m very glad for him and his views. I don’t always agree with him but I find I do more often than not and I’m glad he has the gumption to speak out.
