There is a way to make it theoretically street legal in all 50 states using the Montana llc loophole (you'll have to physically be in Montana for steps 4 and 6). 1. Give the seller a check for 20 on top of the price you bought for. 2. Get cancelled check from bank as proof of purchase. 3. Install street legal equipment 4. Get law enforcement officer to inspect vin and sign form saying not stolen. 5. Take prior paperwork and go to DMV and apply for bonded title. Fyi Montana considered 3 wheelers to be motorcycles not atvs and that's what it will show on registration. 6. Register it under a Montana llc (there websites online that can help you do this) and tell DMV clerk it's a dual sport. 7. You get the montana plates. 8. Since it's owned by a Montana llc and not by yourself you can keep Montana plates indefinitely in any state. 9. Should be theoretically 50 state legal but your local law enforcement might disagree. You should have no problems with law enforcement in Montana, Idaho, arizona, Wyoming, North Dakota and west Virginia. I think it should also work in Canada but I haven't read the specifics of the treaty allowing tourists.
And here I thought doing this for an ATC in CA was hassle. I just did an 82 250r last Friday with no paperwork. All I needed was a bill of sale from the guy I bought it from, along with a written statement of facts from him that he 'lost the paperwork from the last registered owner' and ' has no idea how to contact them after all this time' Paid $300 total covering unpaid back fees from 2015 and title fee for me and I was out with it throwing roostertails up Blowsands in Ocotillo Wells with a 2025 sticker on the fender 3 hours later. Honestly though, the amount of BS being said about how these cannot be registered without paperwork or that they were banned an illegal to ride is pretty much right up there with Chupacabra, Bigfoot, and Gas prices under $2 a gallon....
I've done that many times as I'm a collector of ski doo Tundras and citations. Can't remember if it was mentioned or not but everytime I've done it I was asked by the dmv employees if I have owned the machine for at least a year. I now have an 86 big red that I will be going through the process for.
It works. Thank you very much. Bought the bike the day after you posted this with only a hand written sales receipt. Went to the dmv I. Dutchess county. Thank you.
Just went through this process in PA for a 1985 250sx. State said I did not get a good enough pic of VIN. Had to take the bike to a licensed mechanic and have him write down the VIN as he saw it on his business letterhead and send that into the state. After all that I got my registration. Had one form to fill out and the bill of sale. PA requires the machine to be registerd to ride on state land trails.
I see this was 6 months ago but I just picked up a 1997 Kawasaki KLX300r and I need to get it registered in PA also. What form did you get to do that? I'm confused about whether it's penndot or DCNR
@@promoore1 You go through DCNR. Form is on thier website. You will need clear pic of vin. I used my local tiltle transfer dealer and they helped a lot. good luck
I’m about to go through the same thing. got an ATV from my brothers friend who got it through his father‘s estate, and there’s no title at all. PA here as well, just locking in a comment so I can see reply
Great video gonna try this I have a few untitled vehicles I have to do this for unfortunately. What if you don’t have the sellers info and can’t contact them to sign things is it still possible?
Great video! One thing i love about the province of Alberta, and honda specifically. They can be registered and insured as motorcycle. I mean full, road, legal. I am in the process at the moment of figuring it out ❤
So now is this the same as a title? Here in WA state you have to get it inspected by the state patrol before taking paperwork to the dmv to get a title, which takes 3 years to get. You can however get a registration and tabs to ride right away. You can also sell it within the three years before you receive the title in your name.
My local dmv Herkimer county made me take a pic and i had to take a pencil and place a piece of paper and rubbed lightly over vin and the numbers come out on the paper...gotta love the DMV lol
I noticed your registration says Non-Transferable. In NY I thought ATVs were supposed to be transferable. Did you receive a title ? If not, how can you sell it to the next person with out a transferable reg ?
I tried to do this today in Onondaga County, and they told me that the MV-51B needs to be filled out and signed by the previous owner. It says on the back that if you have had possession of the ATV for less than a year, that the previous owner needs to fill it out. I guess I'll have to wait a year, because I've already bugged the former owner too many times.
Registration gives you “proof of ownership”, if bike gets impounded or stolen. I ride dirty in Massachusetts. But have NH stickers (no forms required). Just $120 +VIN (non-resident)
The vin off a 2010 Yamaha Grizzly 4 wheeler I bought from a guy has been scratched off. I have nothing to show the DMV not even a bill of sale. I live in Florida. Would love to get a title on it…..🤷♀️
I just did this today with your video was super helpful. Thank you for posting this I’m also in NY! My only question is they told me they needed to investigate the paperwork is that normal? I had my cop friend run the vin before purchasing so it was clean. And they said that the registration is not transferable but they gave me a transferable registration for it and a plate. Is this normal?
I'll have one of those $250 ATC 350X 3 wheelers, too, please 😅 It really irks me that NY state technically requires an ATV to be registered even to use on your own property. If you go and buy a new one, the dealer isnt even allowed to give it to you until its registered, except for in the rare instance youre exempt, such as when the ATV is exclusively used for agriculture. This state really likes to get up in our business 🤨 At least they dont make the registration expensive. Not like snowmobiles. 12.50 compared to 45 or 100 dollars for a sled depending on whether youre a snowmobile club memeber or not. Thanks for sharing the process with your fans. Its nice to get some accurate information out there. I've also heard folks say it's not legal to register 3-wheelers in NY, but i knew that was a load of crap. I always assumed years ago that this process would be difficult and/or expensive, so i never did it until this spring. It was a pleasant surprise to find out that it was easy and cost under $50. Mine also came through as nontransferable. I was told that Albany will review the documents, and if everything checks out, they'll issue a transferrable registration later. So, technically I still dont have a proof of ownership quite yet.
When should I put the insurance on before going to DMV or after am done with DMV. Do you have to have insurance card before you go to DMV didn't see you or hear you mentioned it on your video
I think the only way to get a road legal plate is if your bike was originally made for on road use and registered that way. Has to be all the DOT requirements. I do not know the process to get something road legal if it wasn't made from the factory that way.

@ThisOldTrike yea I'm from upstate NY an have talked to about 30 people an maybe only 5 have the title or registration. Everyone else can only do a bill of sale.
So does this work if there was registration previously but was lost and sold without it. Let’s say 2000 atv registered in 2002 sold in 2005 with it then sold in 2008 without and then again 2012 without now I bought it in 2024 without it can I still do this or so I have to track down owner
I’ve got a question, what if you bought an Atv for 2,000$, and didn’t get a sales receipt, and didn’t really know the guy you got it off of, I bought a 1998 Suzuki king quad 300 without papers and forgot to ask for a sales receipt, it’s been over a year sense I’ve purchased it and probably wouldn’t be able to find the person I got it from, but I don’t want to get pulled over for no plate or reg, what should I do
Can I ask what to do as 3rd party on a utv ? He refused a bill of sale cause it was in a fire. He's a junk dealer I want to re do it. Can u throw some suggestions. Nothing comes up on the manufacturer s web . It only shows recalls etc.
Man, trying to get a title for anything in Idaho is a complete mess. Dang near impossible unless you can find the last registered owner. For strictly off road vehicles you can get an annual off road tag without a title now. But anything requiring a plate, forget about it. Idaho didn’t require a title for off-road vehicles until 1988. Unfortunately almost all three wheelers don’t have titles. But I do believe if it’s never been titled, it’s much easier to get a title.
I bought a non running 06 trx250ex for $400 with no title or bill of sale and now I can’t get ahold of the guy for a bill of sale… what do I do to get a title in my name? It’s running now and all fixed up but trying to register it.
Some people would "find" the guy you bought it from at a friend's house or perhaps visiting a coworker... then the bill of sale can get signed because you were fortunate enough to happen to bump into the seller that way... 😉😉😉
