  • Despite having played eight sold out shows in the venue four years earlier, it was obvious that this ‘acoustic & intimate’ performance at the Enmore Theatre was very special to David Le’aupepe. After completing a series of arena shows around the country, it was here, in his home neighbourhood, that he’d been really looking forward to playing. There was plenty of reminiscing and opportunities for questions from the audience. And as is only fitting for such a personal event, the rest of the band wasn’t as present on stage as is normal at a Gang of Youths gig, instead wandering on and off as the stripped back song versions required. Also on stage at times was Gretta Ray, who’d been the band’s support act throughout their Australian tour (although not on this night).
Do Not Let Your Spirit Wane (00:24)
    brothers (09:16)
The Deepest Sighs, the Frankest Shadows (16:43)
in the wake of your leave (24:37)
It was the fans' singing which prompted Le’aupepe and the band to spontaneously perform ‘in the wake of your leave’ as the first of two encores. It was truly a great homecoming for all who were there.

So incredibly beautiful. I defy anyone to not be moved by any of those 4 songs. The words to "Brothers" are clearly such a deeply personal thing to Dave and it moves me every time. LOVE LOVE LOVE this band

It was a moving performance. Dave shared a lot of emotions that night, both in his songs and his stories. A great end to their Australian tour. Thanks for commenting.

@@Peter_LiveMusic personally for me, I have only just discovered Gang Of Youths and purely by chance. About a month or so ago I just so happened to hear a clip of "Unison" on one of those annoying TH-cam adverts I usually skip that was advertising their upcoming UK tour. I immediately searched for the song, watched the video and listened to it in its entirety. I was just blown away by its sheer, unashamed beauty both musically and lyrically. Since then I've listened to A LOT of their material on repeat and it all just keeps getting more and more beautiful the more I listen to it. It just touches me so unexpectedly in a way I've never felt from music before and it feels so wholesome to me. For many personal reasons "The heart is a muscle" really hits me hard. I listened to "Do not let your spirit wane" live from Melbourne yesterday and again was blown away and moved to tears. I can honestly say that I truly love these guys and that it really was love at first... Hear? Sight? For me, David is just so in touch and frank with his emotions and I can relate so much to them, it feels like he speaks directly to my heart. Dave is obviously also a really charismatic, funny, entertaining, self deprecating and self effacing person. That coupled with his lyrics, to me, just makes him such a beautiful human being. Not to mention he also has some of the most outstanding moves I've EVER seen!!! I'm actually going to see them in Nottingham on 18th November and... I CAN NOT WAIT! I'm counting down the days!!!! I already know it's going to be one of the most unforgettable experiences that I will truly treasure forever!!!

@@alexmortimer1032 I too didn't know of Gang of Youths until a few years ago, via a Spotify recommended song, and then for a long time I had no idea they were an Australian group. Once I learnt that, I took much more interest in them, knowing they'd be back touring here some time soon. I missed out on their arena show in Sydney, so was very happy to grab a ticket to this more intimate, final performance. There were hints during it that Dave and the band were finding the heavy touring schedule to be taking a toll on them. Sadly, this morning, they have announced the postponement of their US tour during to health issues. As you write above, Dave gives his all to his music, both physically and emotionally. Let's hope he and the rest of the band get their much needed rest. The good news for you is there's no talk of the remaining European dates being postponed. I know you'll have a great night seeing them in Nottingham.

@@Peter_LiveMusic aaaah that's so awesome! I love discovering new music naturally like that. Its funny how things like that happen. I remember around early 2000's I discovered a band (Kasabian) supporting one of my favourite bands at the time. I stood at the side of the stage talking to them after their set and I was surprised they knew, when I told them, the part of town I was from!! I thought how the hell do they know where that is? Turns out they were from my home town the whole time!! I thought they were Northerners!!! Anyways, I guess in many ways its better that you went to this instead of the area show. I mean with that performance, what a privilege it must have been to be go to this gig. Oh by the way, thank you for sharing!! Ah I know Dave has quite a connection to the US having lived there so its a shame they cancelled that leg. Health is obviously more important and there will be other tours to the US anyway so its disappointing but no big deal at the end of the day. Dave himself is a huge advocate of looking after yourself and your health so if European dates like Nottingham was to get cancelled id personally be gutted but at the same time i'd understand. Lets hope they do recover and recuperate in time. They've got the time now as their next date in Europe isn't until October 25th in Amsterdam. So excited for November now!!!!!

Hey mate, I'm stateside and don't get to see a lot of these bands in the states yet or ever. Your channel has been an incredible way for me to experience Australia's finest musicians live. Thanks!

Thanks for your kind comment Patrick. I'm very pleased you are enjoying some good Aussie bands. Of course, the bands I see very much reflect my 'musical age'. There are so many other great bands around these days which I haven't had the time or opportunity to discover. And I'm limited to how many concerts I can afford to attend. Tickets are so expensive these days. Still, live music is one of my few real pleasures in life and I do enjoy trying to capture the joy it brings me. If other people get something from it too, then that makes it all the better.

Glad you liked it. I was lucky enough to see the advertisements for it as soon as it was announced and immediately got tickets, otherwise I would have missed out too. A great night. Thanks for commenting.
